Yelp
This is one of the more challenging reviews I've had to write, largely because of the current climate.
I'll start at the top. Quite simply, Viaggio is barely even trying when it comes to the city's mask mandate. Other than a place like Richard's Bar, which has always operated a bit outside the law, I haven't seen such blatant disregard for the mandates since this all started nearly two years ago.
Our server did not have a mask. Nor did the bartender. The host and manager (?) more often than not had theirs around their chins. Customers weren't expected to put them on when walking through the dining room. Most who entered didn't even bother putting them on. It was almost like it was understood that this isn't a place where that matters.
The bussers and food runners, yes, they did have masks. But it very much felt like a rebellious act that they were doing so. On the bar side of the restaurant? It felt like some other time, I half expected to see people lighting up. On the restaurant side? Still not much regard, but at least the occasional modest attempt.
The food was above average, from the complimentary bread to the sizeable portions of chicken parm and pasta. The pasta was a bit overcooked, but overall the sauce was very good and the food was well seasoned.
The issue, besides the lengthy description at the top, was that Viaggio purports itself to be fine dining, when the experience is anything but. This wasn't table service where wine choices are suggested with your entree, this was more like a bar that happens to serve good Italian food. And hey, I'm all for a more casual atmosphere, but then I shouldn't expect to pay $100 for two entrees and two glasses of wine.
The food? Pretty close to four stars.
The ambience? A solid 2.
The blatant, almost proud disrespect and dismissal of statewide laws? An obvious 0.
