The 20 Essential Memphis Restaurants

"Wes Anderson could have concocted the aesthetic of Vice & Virtue, a blend of warmth and whimsy that’s an ideal fit for downtown Memphis’s Arrive Hotel (the former home of the Memphis College of Art’s graduate program). The coffee shop and roaster prioritizes specialty-grade coffees, selecting blends from around the world and partnering with local companies to create unique releases. Check out their collab with Memphis-based Blue Note Bourbon, for which Vice & Virtue aged green Guatemalan coffee beans in Blue Note’s emptied barrels before roasting." - Andy Meek, Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

Not your typical cup of coffee. Vice and Virtue is a special experience. Their beans are aged in old bourbon barrels and that has a dramatic effect on the taste of their coffee. Are you drinking alcohol, no. Does the taste of espresso get covered up by the taste of bourbon, for me, yes. They made a great quality cup of coffee and the vibes make you feel like you're in a ritzy 1920's hotel lobby. For me, I love the taste of good espresso so this spot was not the best fit for my tastes but certainly worth a visit.

I've been here a few times and it is a great coffee shop. Their bourbon coffee has a very unique flavor and I would very much recommend it to those visiting for the first time! The atmosphere is nice and there are plenty of seats and couches to enjoy your drink at.

Great coffee shop in the first floor of a boutique hotel one block from the National Civil Rights Museum. The lobby of the hotel is awesome, and the coffee was very good!

Wow this place is good! We went here twice with different baristas and both times great coffee. We ordered flat whites and it came out perfect with latte art. Limited range of pastries and cake but all good. We loved the apple hand pie and the brown butter brownie.

Very busy on a sunday morning! Recommend getting there early before they run out of pastries. Got the cheddar and scallion scone which was so good! Coffee was also high quality!

I’ve visited nearly every coffee shop in Memphis and while most are good, Vice & Virtue is truly excellent (and they have Food & Wine Magazine’s endorsement to prove it). Espresso drinks are always excellent and the cappuccino (pictured) is masterfully prepared (and designed). After talking with the baristas (who are really chill!), I learned Vice & Virtue specializes in lighter roast coffee which results in a more nuanced flavor profile (evinced in their drip coffee, endless if you stay, and my go-to when I don’t opt for cold brew). Pastries are also incredible, albeit a little pricey like other food items, but worth it for the quality. This is a lovely space to telework, socialize, read, or even take a date. Several strangers have become my friends over coffee at Vice & Virtue. This coffee shop is, unequivocally, the finest (and coziest) of its kind in Memphis. A real treasure!

Such an awesome experience! This has been an exciting new addition to Memphis downtown spaces to enjoy coffee, brunch, work, and/or hang out with friends. The vibrant decorating and eclectic comfortable furniture is undeniably inspiring. It was at first difficult to find as the exterior is advertised as the Arrive Hotel (it is in the lobby of the hotel!! First space when you walk in!) The bourbon Mocha is so good. There toasts are amazing as well. The staff is very attentive and friendly. I can't wait to see V+V grow!

Sooo cool!! The bourbon mocha was awesome. I loved the French toast, the honey and sourdough didn’t really wow me. The jambon beurre was delicious but it could use a little more ham. The ambience of the whole place was AWESOME! Classy with character. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends!
