Prepare to have your perception of Italian dining redefined! My recent visit to Vico Ristorante Italiano in Norwood, MA, was nothing short of a culinary epiphany, a resounding 5-star experience that I'm eager to share.
Our Friday night began with a desperate search for a restaurant near our hotel. Trying to find a table for six (three adults and three kids) was daunting, to say the least. As expected, most places were swamped, but a call to Vico's changed everything. I spoke with China, whose exceptional helpfulness immediately set the tone for the evening. Despite being packed, she offered a glimmer of hope--a potential table in about 30 minutes--and even provided alternative recommendations. However, after we figured out that we were close, we called back to confirm we were on our way.
Upon arrival, the restaurant buzzed with energy. The wait for a table only heightened our anticipation, and now, having experienced Vico's, I understand why patrons were willing to wait. We were warmly greeted by China and Leo, the owner's son, who assured us that the wait would be worthwhile. They were absolutely right.
( **A quick note: we all used the bathrooms while we waited, and even though they are shared with another establishment on the opposite side of the building, they were VERY clean! **)
Vico's exudes an intimate charm. Yes, it was lively (a testament to its popularity), but the aroma alone was enough to transport us to Italy. Leo, with remarkable consideration, seated our party of six (three adults, three kids) in a slightly quieter area near the kitchen. It was here that we met the dynamic duo steering the ship that night: Alessandra and Giuliana, the owners' daughters. Their passion, humor, and genuine love for their craft were palpable. Alessandra's playful banter with Giuliana ("Get away from my friends! They are mine!") created an atmosphere that was both welcoming and exhilarating.
The appetizers, Burrata Caprese and Arancini, were a revelation. The Burrata Caprese was a symphony of fresh, creamy, and vibrant flavors, while the Arancini were golden orbs of crispy, savory perfection. Honestly, this was the best food I had all weekend, a bold statement considering we were in town for a hockey tournament that lasted 4 days.
What truly elevated our experience was the exceptional service. Alessandra and Giuliana treated our children with the same respect and enthusiasm they showed the adults. Such generosity is a rare and invaluable quality, and I commend Vico's for fostering such a welcoming environment.
When it came to the main course, I was torn. So, I placed my trust in Alessandra, asking her to "surprise me." She chose the Osso Buco, and what followed was a culinary masterpiece. The veal shank was fall-off-the-bone tender, infused with a depth of flavor that was both rich and delicate. A subtle hint of lemon intrigued my palate, and Alessandra revealed the secret: gremolata. It was, without exaggeration, the most exquisite osso buco I have ever tasted, a dish I will undoubtedly dream about for years to come. All of the food was hot, and I could tell it was 100% made to order. Something that doesn't happen at many restaurants these days. Again, another point to their passion for cuisine.
The meal concluded with an array of equally divine desserts, each one a testament to Vico's commitment to culinary excellence.
Vico Ristorante Italiano is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. It's a place where you're treated like family, where the food is prepared with passion and skill, and where every bite is a celebration of Italian tradition. The lively atmosphere, far from being a drawback, added to the restaurant's vibrant charm. If you're in Norwood, MA, do not miss the opportunity to dine at Vico's. The restaurantis a five-star gem that deserves all the accolades it receives.
I will be back. Grazie Mille Vico!
(I'm sorry I do not have any pictures to add; all the food was gone before I thought of it!)
