Vidago Palace

"You’ll make a grand entrance when arriving at this magnificent 1910 palace in the northwestern Portuguese spa town of the same name. A stone-paved driveway lined with century-old trees leads to a dusty-rose facade punctuated by Juliet balconies and French doors. There, you’ll ascend a tiered granite staircase to reach the gorgeous lobby of this 70-room hotel. Working with Paris-based hotelier Grace Leo-Andrieu, Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza Vieira added a spectacular spa complex to the property and utterly remade the hotel without ruffling its Belle Époque atmosphere. Similarly, the newly done public spaces, including a cozy bar, a lounge, a breakfast room, and surely one of Europe’s grandest dining rooms, merge the nineteenth-century style of the great country estates. A lively color scheme, rich fabrics, and offbeat accessories provide a subtle but tonic dose of modernity. Rooms reprise this same urbane look, with high ceilings, parquet floors, thick camel-colored throw rugs, and earth-tone damask curtains and upholstery. Baths go retro with white-subway-tile walls, colorful terra-cotta-tile floors, and deep Victorian-style soaking tubs; many have French doors and fine views over the surrounding park."

Beautiful hotel, unfortunately the thermal springs are closed. The spa has a pool (you have to pay to use it, but it’s not thermal water). The rooms are beautifully decorated, but the air conditioning doesn’t work. I complained many times. They relocated me to supposedly upgrade room, facing the back. My original room had a beautiful view. So actually they downgraded me. The food is excellent and the service superior. The spa has good menu of services. I will not return. I spent four days, there is not much to do. If you are looking for golfing there is nice golf field. My review could had been better should they fixed the air conditioning. But it took me many, many complains ( 10 times at least).

Loved Vidago Palace. The old world luxury & grace is disarming. It’s easy to feel transported to another time. Then there’s the Spa. OMG! Worth the visit. And another visit. The mineral baths are indeed healing (please turn up the heat in the jacuzzi). Steam bath/sauna/ice plunge. Amazing. And then the 1star Michelin Resto … dinner to die for. We loved our stay & wished we’d booked 2 nights. Next time!

One of the best hotels I ever been to. It's an experience. From the arrival, the spa, the meals, breakfast, the building and the surrounding gardens and even the check-out. Loved it.

A beautiful hotel with its own history. A huge garden where you can walk. The staff is friendly. The rooms are not cut 5 star, but they are clean. The fountain was visible from the room. The rooms do not have a kettle or coffee machine. The hotel has two swimming pools, indoors and outdoors. The swimming pool and jacuzzi inside costs 10€ per person, I’ve only seen this in 3-star hotels. There is no wifi at the pool outside and no one offers water either (you can only buy it at the bar). The hotel does not have a first aid kit, this is a violation of the rules. You can buy mineral water here, which is extracted on site, but it costs more than in the store haha :)

I don't know where to start really. The whole experience at Vidago Palace was truly perfect. From every member of staff, food in all the restaurants/bar, bedrooms where I had the best 4 nights sleep that I had in ages, the grounds and the excursions. If you want a special holiday or short escape, visit here. You won't be disappointed.
