The third time was the charm in our attempt to have weekend breakfast at Vidlak's. We rolled out of bed early, hit the road by 7:45 and pulled up -- and into a parking space!!! -- just as the establishment opened at 8 (at which time there already was a line of 15-20 folks).
Seat yourself, the sign said, and there was plenty of room. Its larger inside than youd think. The restaurant is in a long-established strip mall, but the restaurant interior was clean, bright, with high ceilings and plenty of room between tables.
It appears there were quite a few regulars, sitting at their regular tables, with no need for menus as folks "already knew what they wanted." And guests greeted each other as well as sang happy birthday to a server.
Coffee is hot, constantly (though not intrusively) refilled, and everyone is friendly.
We started with a shared, gigantic cinnamon roll swimming in (sour cream?) icing. Pillowy soft and light, though probably not calorically, we stopped halfway through to leave room for our "real" breakfast.
Just to get a basic feel for the place, we both had a standard bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and toast. The bacon was cooked just right -- cooked all the way through with some flexibility remaining. The flavor was not the best, a light sense of smoke, but no real other flavor -- no sweetness, no saltiness. I was disappointed with that.
Eggs were cooked just right for dipping with toast that actually was toasted, with a nice bit of butter without being soaked. And the star -- a healthy (size-wise ) serving of deliciously crispy hash browns. I could eat those all day!
I highly recommend you try this place, but do some reconnaissance first to get an idea of just how popular it is. If you just show up some morning at 9, you might find an extremely long wait. (It's probably worth it, though.)
