A Beginner’s Guide to Building a Japanese Pantry in Portland | Eater Portland

"In North Portland, Vieng Lao is a tiny, specialized market that focuses on ingredients from specific regions—particularly Southeast Asia—so I go there when I need regional items that bigger supermarkets might not prioritize." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart

I just recently moved to the neighborhood and was needing some essentials like Vietnamese fish sauce and Thai chili peppers. I was able to find everything I needed and more. The have a small but great selection. I will definitely be coming back!

Google
Amazing local grocery store with all your specialty Asian ingredients needs. This place is a gem!

Google
I can’t believe I haven’t left a review for this amazing grocery store. I’m Vietnamese and having Vieng Lao in NE Portland is huge. I don’t have to drive all the way out to 82nd to get my essentials. The owners are nice and always letting us know which bag of rice requires more water or less. They’re crucial to our community and will always go there to get my groceries for Thit Ko and Bun Rieu. When people were freaking out about siracha being out of stock this place had a healthy stock. You just gotta know where to look and this is definitely one of NE Portland’s hidden gems.

Great little shop on Killingsworth. They have all the basics and more. Chinese herbal pharmacy too

Google
The deals are great and the customer service is very good. Eventhough it was hard to understand eachother, cashier explained to me what red line stone is used for and was very nice to let me use their employee restroom. Thank you Vieng Lao!

Google
This small grocery store is quite wonderful. The fresh fruit and veggies always look great. Many fresh items you simply won't find anywhere else in the neighborhood. They also have a large selection of frozen items, also full of wonderful treats you won't find elsewhere nearby. The employees/owners are super friendly to everyone.

Google
So grateful to have this Asian market as my local go-to for almost all my SE Asian cooking needs. I’ve been visiting regularly for close to five years and they always have the random needed ingredients you can’t find anywhere else in N and NE PDX. Highly recommend!

Google
I shop here often, parking is ok, not great, but the tofu and fresh noodles you can get make up for it. They also have produce needed for your dishes.. Not sure if it is a family run business, but they are so nice, definitely want to spend as much locally to support our businesses. Their prices are very good compared to other local grocery. Its a regular stop on my shopping list.

Yelp
I've always wanted to write a review for Vieng Lao, as my family's been shopping here since the 1980s. There's only been a few times in the past (nearly) three decades where we couldn't find what we needed at Vieng Lao and the family running the store will find it for you if they don't carry it/have it in stock. From pork belly to betelnut, this has been THE go-to store for SE Asians and Islanders of NoPo! Honestly, my only quasi-complaint is that apparently stores like Vieng Lao are trendy now... So sometimes I have to search for parking or wait for a space to open up. But, parking aside, kudos to the family on surviving all these years and now flourishing!

Yelp
I've been meaning to go here for a while and was finally able to get in here. It's a lot bigger than I thought it was. The service was very friendly and they have a wide selection of items to choose from. I also had some questions and they were more than happy to answer them for me. My only complaint was the produce was not fresh but maybe that was just day and time (mid-week, lunch time) that I was there. It's also very nice that they have dedicated parking too!

Jake F.

Yelp
Great small grocery store. Pretty wide selection of different sauces, spices, noodles, and lots of frozen food available.

Yelp
I live literally 3 minutes from this Market, it's such a cute little Vietnamese market and the Women who run it are always so sweet and happy to see me and my partner. Also I want they're music playlist so bad! they always play this ethereal music that is just so cool. They have fresh produce and herbs, the mangos are always perfectly ripe, they also have a fresh meat and seafood case towards the back wall. They have a really cool assortment of products from staple Asian spices, sauces, and ingredients, to snacks and drinks. Oh and they make their own kimchi and pickled veggies on the weekends, overall I absolutely adore this place and go in probably once a week. Support a local business and come shop here!

Yelp
I love this place because it is near my home and they have most of my Asian grocery needs when I need the basics. Yes there are bigger and well stocked stores on 82nd and in Beaverton but that is a long ways to go. This is a family run place run by some nice people worth supporting. Prices here are reasonable and competitive with the bigger markets. Good store and good people, and a taco truck located in back of parking lot.

Yelp
Best pan asian grocery in north Portland - veg, tofu, noodles, sauces etc. Great place & owners. Support this biz!

Orion T.

Yelp
Had high hopes but was let down tbh not the most variety of oriental food and snacks.

Yelp
Awesome some local Asian grocery store. Great selection and great prices. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. I will make this place a regular stop.

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Great service and selection! My regular noodle and curry spot. Great assortment of fresh veggies and tofu.

Yelp
Guess they are closed during COVID? I tried to ask a dude parked in front of the store that loves upstairs but he wasn't trying to hear me.

Yelp
My own personal Asian grocer....hangin' off the east side of the I5, and within biking distance and very unknown. Though there is a huge sign on the east side of the store, and though it comes with its own parking lot, still, I fear not many know the secrets that lie within. Employees speak Vietnamese, hence the inventory of primarily Vietnamese products, other SE asian things, like tamarind, galangal, various Thai curries, dried fish products, variety of instant noodles, all kinds of fish sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil...If you come looking for soju or natto or konnyaku, outa luck. Hardly any Japanese or Korean inventory. My regular pick-ups were, of course, rice, and the chinese long donuts (found in frozen section) to accompany the rice porridges that I used to stew. And of course their vegetables and fruits run cheaper than Safeway or Freddie's, but their freshness QC is suspect, and you have to be a discerning shopper! 3in1 teas/coffees, and the CafeDuMonde type of chicory coffee for roasting cafe sue da. I've even located those Chinese sesame balls now/again, when they're there. They also stock a nice delicate assortment of French-influenced baked items, like rolled sponge cake and petite french cookies! Butcher in back, though I honestly preferred not to purchase any questionable meat cuts from the bloke. PS They don't turn on the heat in the winter or any other blustery-time. Be warned: bring a layer to put on; if you don't, you'll remember the unpleasant experience and wish you had taken me up on my advice.

Why B.

Yelp
I can only rate 4 stars because I've only been a few times. Really cool place. The very nice woman at the register laughed at all the different things I bought. Mostly, anything with no English print on the package. All the more reason to keep going back

Yelp
Love this place. Great prices. Very friendly staff. Perfect for hard to find Asian ingredients. It's my go to for Thai glutinous rice and Thai curry, fish sauce and sambal oelek. Whatever you need!

Yelp
If you're seeking a great Asian grocery store in N Portland, you must check out Vieng Lao on Killingsworth (by PCC). The veggies are inexpensive & fresh and they carry stock that I cannot find anywhere else, like my dried mango (Philippines brand, green pkg) & my rice steamer. love this store, check it out...

Yelp
I love this spot! Why do I love this spot? Because all the ingredients for the food I grew up with can be found here. Its almost like going through Moms cupboards! Except Mom isn't here to cook...Wah!!! I wholeheartedly support local businesses and this store is as local as it gets. Even if you don't know what you're looking for, just find it within your curious self to walk into this store and browse through each aisle. You may not find something to eat at first glance but you will find something to spark that culinary fire in you. This is where innovation is born! Its a small store but it has enough fresh produce, seafood, spices and canned goods to keep your interest peaked. Luckily, I recognize labels better than I can read Lao, Thai, Japanase, Cantonese, Vietnamese, etc. because most everything is labeled in the product's native language. Fortunately, the owners can help you find what you need - if you know what you're looking for that is. So, grab that asian cook book, find a recipe and for any out of the ordinary ingredients you may come across, I can almost smell that Lao-Vieng will fulfill your needs!

Yelp
This little market is a very happy addition to my neighborhood routine. Although it is a small space, I always can find fresh ingredients for making SE Asian dishes. They always have a good selection of fresh herbs (including Thai basil, cilantro, kari leaves, culantro, Kefir lime leaves, lemongrass, and many more) as well as mung bean sprouts, limes, and fresh galangal. I also just love that they nearly always have fresh bamboo shoot available. Using fresh bamboo has totally ruined me for the canned stuff. The shoots look so beautiful when just cut open. Vieng Lao carry a good assortment of fresh rice & wheat noodles along with Ota Tofu in several varieties. The shop also has a nice assortment of dried noodles, sauces, and canned goods.

Yelp
Favorite store in Portland, I miss living across the street from it due to its convenience!

Yelp
Its part of my biweekly food shopping places (also New Seasons, Freddys, Trader Joes and Winco). Everything you need for pho although I do get the meat elsewhere (new Seasons). This is how you make pho taste life the restaurants...with fresh noodles that you cook for 10 seconds! My kids live on it. The staff is nice and its perfect size to get in and out fast.

Christopher R.

Yelp
Love this place. They carry a good selection of spices, condiments and produce (including long bean:)) and they have a wheat free gochujang. They also carry Carlton Farms pork at great prices.

Yelp
I came into this place thinking it was a small local store where I could only get a few things. However, walking inside, I realised the place is much bigger than it looked from the outside. They have a little bit of everything and I walked out with more than what I originally came in for.

Yelp
Glad this is in #NoPo. Has many of the basic Asian products I use; noodles, oils, canned fruits and spices.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff, wonderfully fresh cilantro, fish, canned goods, rice steamers, utensils, bananas, etcetera. My only gripe is that they're only open from 10 till 7.

Chad F.

Yelp
Great source for cheap fresh Thai basil. Lots choices. By no means Awajimaya or Fubon but so easy in and out

Yelp
This place is great. Good prices, good assortment, and it's not so huge that you get lost wandering through it. Also they have nicely priced bargain cookware... of course it's of the low end asian market variety, but not bad stuff for the prices....
google avatar

Tommy T.

Yelp
Vieng Lao is closer in than the big box asian markets but still keeps the prices down while having a decent selection. The new remodel makes the place look bigger from the in side and out. I am happy to see a market like this in the inner section of N/NE as it's much more convenient for a lot of folks who live in the area and saves me the trip to 82nd to get banana sauce. They have a nice selection of fresh veggies that are impossible to find in conventional markets.
google avatar

Alabama W.

Yelp
Love this place. You can get the cheapest kimchi here; $2.50 for one of those medium sized plastic to-go containers you get at the Safeway deli. Home made and delicious!

Erinne G.

Yelp
I love this place! I never go for the produce or meat, but the selection of sauces, flavorings, noodles, canned goods, snacks and other fun items can't be beat, especially in this area of town. Good prices, too, so stock up on your coconut milk and soy sauce here! A couple of my favorites are the canned vegetarian mock-meats, little cans of curry pastes, and refrigerated fried tofu. A few years ago, they remodeled and added a big window looking out on the street in their second room, which really makes the space seem much more open and inviting than before. This is also the only place I've ever seen a bag of msg, which is more interesting than appetizing.

Kimberley G.

Yelp
Friendly people and great service. I go here for a lot more then just Asian foods, as they have a lot of the basics (sugar, salt, etc) for cheaper then in the big stores. If they were closer to my house I would probably use them as my only food source. Family run with friendly service, they are always willing to help me out or make a ingredient suggestion. They also have a great fish selection. Support your local grocery!

Nathan B.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. Great assortment of weird items. Thai energy drinks... Huge wall of noodles.. And a great taco truck in the parking lot... what more could I ask for in my neighborhood?
