Viet Nom Opens in University City With Short Rib-Filled Bowls of Vietnamese Pho | Eater San Diego

"A new Vietnamese restaurant has arrived in the University City area at the Renaissance Town Centre shopping plaza, presenting a small, modern pho-focused concept that owner Franklin Chou says was intended to be a "small, modern Vietnamese pho shop with a concentrated menu." As the sixth establishment from SDB Restaurant Group, the menu centers on pho options including the Pho Nom bowl (bone-in short ribs, meatballs, and boneless short ribs), a noodle-less pho broth featuring bone-in short ribs and vegetables, and a vegetarian pho version in development. Chou is also offering items from his other spots—chili tamarind wings and snacks like crullers (deep-fried dough sticks for dipping in pho), shrimp spring rolls, fried egg rolls, and red bean sesame balls—plus the Galaxy lemonade (lychee lemonade with butterfly pea tea) from Steamy Piggy." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
The pho here was excellent. The broth was rich yet clean, with a deep, slow-simmered flavor that wasn’t greasy at all. The noodles were perfectly cooked, soft but still springy, and the beef was tender and fresh. The herbs and sides were crisp and aromatic, and everything came together really well. It’s the kind of pho that feels comforting and satisfying without being too heavy. On top of the great food, Trinity was very friendly and attentive, which made the overall experience even better. Definitely a place I’d come back to for pho.

Google
The service was really good and fast, there were only 2 servers but they worked efficiently and the food came out so fast like less than 10 mins. The grilled pork spring rolls were good and not something I’ve had before bc there was some fried crunchy aspect that was good. The bun was pretty standard nothing spectacular but the short rib pho and pho nom broths were really good and tasty. One thing though is the phos didn’t automatically come with bean sprouts and the other stuff but when he asked us if we wanted and we said yes then he gave them so that wasn’t a problem just surprised because I thought all pho places give bean sprouts, mint, etc. overall good place and recommend getting here before 6 or a little after because there was a line shortly after 6pm

Google
I ordered the boneless rib pho, and it was a very generous portion! Taste-wise, it's amazing too. I added some chili oil and white pepper for spice and flavour. Do beware that the place has a wait time if you come visit due to how busy it is, but it is definitely worth coming to!

Google
Solid pho spot with a surprisingly good broth — not too heavy and very well balanced. Ingredients were fresh and everything came out hot and fast. Service was a big plus. Trinity was super kind, welcoming, and checked in on us at just the right times. Her attitude really made the meal more enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Google
I ordered the bone-in short rib pho, and it was a total showstopper. The rib (Suon Bo) was huge—it barely fit in the bowl! The meat was incredibly tender and fell right off the bone with just a touch of my chopsticks. The broth was piping hot and clear, but still had that rich and savory. If you're hungry, definitely get this bowl. Highly recommended!

Google
First time here and the server was very nice! Shrimp spring rolls were tasty . Generous portions of Basel and bean shouts. Broth is excellent!. We are coming back!

Google
With a clean atmosphere and fast services, Vietnom delivers amazing Vietnam style soup, otherwise known as pho. The pho here is delicious with an exotic scent but with amazing flavor. The chicken also tastes amazing 🤩This restaurant totally deserves a 5 out of 5.

Google
The best spring rolls I’ve ever had—so fresh, flavorful, and perfectly wrapped. The pho was amazing too, with a huge portion that’s definitely worth it. I especially loved the short ribs; they were so tender and full of flavor, cooked to perfection. On top of the great food, the service made the experience even better. Our server Tony was super nice and friendly, which made us feel really welcome. I would 100% come back and recommend it to anyone who loves Vietnamese food!

Yelp
This cozy shop with delicious pho hit the spot on a drizzly December day! We got the short rib pho and it was excellent!

Yelp
If you're looking for a great bowel of pho, come give Viet Nom a try. Their featured bowl of pho, Pho Nom, offers two bone-in beef rib along with sliced short rib, sliced brisket, and meatballs in pretty well flavored broth. With the highlight obviously being the bone-rib rib, the meat was so tender that if fell off the bone immediately with the slightest touch. The side veggies were also very fresh and complimented the dish well. The restaurant itself is pretty cozy with offering a handful of tables and bar seating. Still, the waitress the day I went was very friendly and quick with the service. If I find myself in the area again, I could see myself coming back for another nice warm bowl of pho.

Yelp
Service from Trinity was attentive and fast. The food was very good with authentic Viet flavors. The peanut sauce had a touch of tangy (maybe rice vinegar), and the Pho was very tasty.

Yelp
from the moment we were outside, we could smell the delicious aroma of the food! tony was super helpful and really nice. he made sure my hubby and i were taken care of. now onto the food. The moment the food was brought out, I could smell the aroma of the broth, and my mouth was already watering. The meat is super tender, and I just love how the broth has so much flavor in it. If you guys do decide to put any of these sauces, make sure to ask them for the lemon grass sate! 10/10, will be back again!

Yelp
I was just telling my hubs that I rarely crave Vietnamese food. BUT! Wow. This place is amazing. Broth felt clean but still flavorful. The short rib (boneless, for ease) is where it's at! Tender and has that mouth-watering meat flavor that has you craving more. 10/10, highly recommend, would come again.

Yelp
Both time I've been, they were a little short staff and service was slower. Stay patient! short rib pho, wow! Pho short rib, meatball and Pho nom were very delicious. Tender, flavorful beef. Chili tamarind wings are yummy. Lychee and passionfruit lemonades are refreshing. Parking was easy, great meal.

Yelp
Viet Nom is a solid spot for a bowl of pho near the La Jolla area. This spot is located in a plaza with a good amount of parking spots. Wait times can get long so plan accordingly to put your name down on the waitlist. Wifey and I stopped by for dinner around 6pm and there was about a 15 minute wait. Inside, they have a casual setup with a decent amount of seating. We ended up getting the Grilled Pork Spring Rolls, Meatball and Boneless Short Rib Pho, and the Pho Nom. Overall, everything that we had was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. All of the staff here are friendly and welcoming. There is a reason why this spot has over 1,000+ positive reviews. Viet Nom is Viet gang approved!

Yelp
So far so good. I'm super hungry and this is the first time I haven't seen a line out the door. So it's my first time here. My server is kind. She even cared that I was a little cold :) My first sip. I like!

Yelp
Very flavorful Pho! Fresh condiments (cilantro, Thai basil, bean sprouts, jalapeño, lemongrass paste, limes). The short rib slices tasted great but a little more fatty than I prefer. Located in a busy plaza near UTC Mall Small dining area but they were able to optimize space to fit small to medium groups. Service was fast and friendly. Place was a little warm (no a/c). I hate this parking lot, spaces are too tight. Their menu is online (QR code) https://www.vietnomsd.com/menu

Yelp
This restaurant is located in a plaza less than 1/2 mile away from UTC. Parking is ok as there were plenty on a Saturday afternoon when we walked in at 1700. The place is small with only 6 tables and bar seating for 10 and there is a sign up list on the door so this place can get busy. Service is kind of slow as there is only one person in the front serving. We came here because of the bone in short rib pho. The ambiance is mixed as the music was playing all genre. It is clean and there is only one restroom that can use a little help. Our appetizers came out and we had to ask the server for plates and utensils as it got busy. There was a couple waiting by the door for 15 minutes as there were 2 tables that needed to be bussed and again only one server, waiter, bus boy, phone in order as he was trying to do it all. For the price you pay here they can at least hire one more person to help out. We had to ask and waited a while for the veggies to come out after our soup was served to by that time the broth was not piping hot for the veggies to cook anymore. When I went up to the counter and asked he said he forgot. We asked for extra bowls for the kids to share and he forgot also so we just used the plates for the egg and spring rolls. We ordered: -Pho Nom with nomsen tamago. Again the waiter forgot to bring out the nomsen tamago so I had to just tell him to cancel that part of the order. The short rib was good and tender as it just fell out of the bone. The rest of the soup was ok and nothing special about it. -Short Rib Boneless. Nothing special and not worth it. -Grilled Pork Spring Roll. This is pretty good and has a crunch to the bite. The sauce had a small kick to it and this is just a try but would not pay eight dollars for four small pieces as elsewhere is bigger and better. -Egg Rolls. Nothing to rave about either and for 7.50 for four small pieces, again there are better places to go for your money. No fish sauce with the veggies as they served it with the chili thick sauce, now you know this is not authentic. -Thai Tea no ice. This is just like any other Thai tea wherever you go so nothing to rave about. *the mint leaves were brown and wilting* why would you want to serve that????!!!!!! You may think that this review is a bit harsh but in reality I am being kind as the service was the most horrible experience ever and I even spoke to three other families and they said the same thing. People were going up to the counter now to get what they needed as I did the same for the to go soup container and the bill on two separate occasions. This is just a hype and if you want good Vietnamese food go somewhere else. This is an Asian fusion and you really do not get the authentic taste of the Vietnamese food. Plus the service is bad. They could not even print out a receipt for me as they said they are out of paper. Pricey for non authentic Vietnamese food.

Yelp
I ordered the Pho nom and it was amazing. Especially if you're looking for the extra protein. Love the interpretation of pho. Highly recommend

Yelp
The food here is great! I had the beef shortrib bowl, and it made me happy in the cold weather. The dish was very visually appealing and the broth was flavorful.
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered on DoorDash and I was very impressed! The food came super hot and the flavors were solid. I could taste the lemongrass on the grilled pork and the pho broth was super rich and aromatic. We ordered the short rib + meatball pho and bun thit nuong. Both were delicious! Next time I want to try more of the sides and the tamarind wings which look delicious.

Yelp
Came here after a long day in the hospital - I just wanted a nice hot dinner in peace - ordered a nice bowl of pho and it was delivered quickly and the broth was still very hot - also ordered a fancy jelly drink for my dessert though rn I can't remember the flavor - but I sat in silence enoying each spoonful of that delicious savory broth with the noodles that unstuck from each other (it can be a problem!), and the nice mint and bean sprouts. So happy to have this for my dinner after a very long day.

Yelp
In town and decided to check Viet Nom out. Their menu is limited in options and pretty pricey for a bowl of Pho. I saw one Pho Nom was $29 which contained meatball, short rib, and a rack of rib. I got the Pho short rib meatball $20 and it's okay. The broth was interesting, it had a strong star anise flavor. Some may enjoy it, some won't. I thought it was okay. I also wished they gave me more Pho noodles since it was a little bit. Overall: Pretty pricey. Average Pho. If it was cheaper, I think place would be better. Or if they give more portions.

Yelp
Best wings ever! Tastes like orange chicken but 10000 times better. You gotta try this

Yelp
Packed on a Wednesday night but we were able to get in quickly! Super flavorful broth, tender meat, and a decently sized portion :)

Yelp
Better than pho cow cali. The broth here tastes more real and rich. The restaurant itself is pretty small but its cozy. The server was really nice and the food came out pretty fast!

Yelp
Came in for lunch this Tuesday, pretty cute interior. Tala welcomed us in and helped us with our order! Shared the Pho nam, and the others got the boneless short rib pho. Pho nam 5/5 Meat was really tender and gave the soup a nice broth. Good portion for two people. Boneless short rib 3/5 (according to my family eating it) Not enough meat and said flavor was lacking Overall, fulfilled my pho craving!

Jacklyn H.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Service was spectacular! Ambience was so great! Would highly recommend

Yelp
Trinity and Nico gave great service at Viet Nom. They were friendly and helpful, and the Thai tea was really good. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Derek N.

Yelp
We got the pho nom, and it was so good. it was honestly so fresh and light. there wasn't an overwhelming amount of msg like other pho spots. the flavor was very flavorful and the mean was next level. the meat balls we're good but the bone-in short rib, sliced short rib, sliced brisket were SOOOO good. so soft and literally melted in your mouth. the bone in beef was fall off the bone and so tender. by far my favorite and the price was good too! We got che for dessert, and it was really good, not as sweet as i wanted but you need to wait for the ice to melt and mix in with everything. overall service was good, our server was really nice and ambiance reminds me of an asian fusion restaurant. there is a smaller menu but they make up for that by perfecting their meals.
google avatar

Yelp
Time for lunch and we stopped this place. Something new to get so I opted for the Pho with bone in meat. Along with that order was chicken wings. I also ordered the featured lemonade to boot. Jaylen was our server and he was attententinto out needs. We didn't have to wait too long for our order. The Pho only comes in one size... huge so you better bring your appetite. It was a very satisfying lunch.

Brennan N.

Yelp
We ordered the pho nam and it was really good the meat was very tender. We also ordered the other phos and it was really great.

Yelp
This place was surprisingly good. We really enjoyed our meal. We had the pho, nem cuon and bun thit nuong, and shared them between two people. The staff was very friendly and the place was packed.

Yelp
We enjoy eating here. Pho is always the best and their fried chicken wings. Thai iced tea is really good. Always coming back here to eat with family.
google avatar

Stephen L.

Yelp
Came here randomly with my family. It was a good sign that the menu was pretty limited, as they usually means that they specialize in those items. Sadly, not the case. The restaurant itself was basically a converted counter serve place, and the servers were both very kind. The broth is sweet but for the price tag it's not worth the hype. Similarly, I got the bun thit nuong and the portion was almost laughable compared to other Vietnamese establishments. It was only after did we realize this is the same group that loves to gloss over cuisine, like Flama Llama and Formoosa.

Yelp
Food is really good, and ambience is cozy. Servers are very nice and accomodating. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
i was visiting san diego for the weekend and took my parents here since they were craving viet food. the decor and vibes of the place are very cute! they had amazing customer service and the waiter was very kind. pho short rib: 4.5/5 - the pho was pretty good and so were the meats! i added sriracha and hoisin to enhance the flavor. bun thit nuong: 3.5/5 - i usually love this dish but it felt like this one was a bit lacking. the egg rolls were a bit sour? the meats were the better part of the dish we came at around 5pm on monday and were seated immediately. after we finished eating at 6pm, people were starting to wait outside, so it does get busy during dinner time! the parking lot is super spacious. overall this location was very cute and their food was pretty decent. im biased to the pho from san jose but happy with this experience!
google avatar

Youn S.

Yelp
Food is always great here. I always get the short rib pho and shrimp spring rolls. Servers are attentive. Ambiance and cozy and relaxed. Overall I would give restaurant 4.5/5.

Yelp
Delicious Pho right here in La Jolla! The star anise just hits you as the piping hot steam wafts up.

Yelp
Amazing food service and ambiance, the pho nom has such amazing rib meat, it falls right off the bone, great flavor in the broth too. 5/5 will be coming back

Yelp
Food: It hits the spot! We are visiting from out of town and were craving something soupey. I got the pho short rib and my bf got the bun thit nuong. I really enjoyed the pho broth, meat was tender, noodles were cooked just right. My bf and I also liked the bun thit nuong but the pork could be more flavorful. The eggrolls that came with it were crispy (tasted like home). Only con was the thai basil that came with the pho wasn't that fresh. Drinks: passionate fruit lemonade was a perfect balance of sweet and sour. Parking was easy it was in a plaza. We did walk in on a Friday night and there wasn't a wait. The interior design was really cute and we both thought the "Viet Nom" name was creative.

LeonardThePig B.

Yelp
Tala and Trinity were super friendly and the food was delicious! I ordered the Pho Nom and loved it, and my girlfriend had the shrimp spring rolls. The place was welcoming and cute inside. Definitely recommend!
