TLDR: Give Vietnam House a chance if you want a taste of real specialty foods offered in Vietnam. Besides home-cooking, I know that this is the closest I will ever get in Seattle.
I am a Vietnam native and have eaten here 30+ times over the course of 5 years, and still think it is the best, AUTHENTIC Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle. Vietnam House's top selling dishes are flavorful, healthy, and authentic ( This word is thrown out a lot, but I really don't know how else to describe it); they bring me back to my childhood and frequent visits to my hometown. The proof of this place's awesomeness can be seen by the large number of Vietnamese natives eating in here everyday. It's actually the only Vietnamese restaurant my mom (one of the best darn Viet cooks around) and her friends would agree to go. In terms of value, the portions are generous, and the pricing is comparable or cheaper than traditional viet restaurants.
Favorite, Top-selling Dishes ( Top selling = when you see 80% of people around you ordering it lol ):
- Bun Mang Vit, the famous Bamboo Noodles with Duck salad (my all time favorite) Come before 6PM time or else they will run out... Had this happen to me like three times.
- ANY broken rice dish - I recommend the combo with the most words in it lol. My boyfriend is also a native from VN, and ONLY orders this dish when we go here, because he loves it so much. It's also very hard finding a restaurant that actually sells broken rice (NEVER SETTLE FOR REGULAR RICE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS DISH).
- Hieu Tieu Satay
- Bun Rieu
- Bun Mam
- Lots more - just look around you when you get there
WHAT NOT TO GET (only because you get get better dishes from "specialized" vietnamese restaurants nearby) :
Pho, Bun Bo Hue, Hieu Tieu Nam Vang, ANY simple broth noodle dishes, ANY Chow Fun/ Mein, **will update as I try**
No, the atmosphere is not as modern, or as fancy as Tamarind Tree next door, but TASTE IS KING for me and my family. I know I shouldn't put other restaurants down in a review, but mannnnn - the last time my mom and I had Tamarind Tree, we could only finish 2/5th our noodle soup bowls. I never like to waste food, but yeah... couldn't do it. The broth was bland and sour, with solid hints of MSG and other preservatives. Noodles were soggy and the sauce might as well be fish sauce and sugar. Everyone has their opinion on what's tastes good, but If you've only tried Americanized Vietnamese food, then your opinion may be a teeny bit skewed - Again, give Vietnam House a chance if you want a true taste of the food offered in Vietnam.
