The 13 Best Restaurants In The Medical Center - Houston - The Infatuation

"If you find yourself in need of a quick meal, head to Viet’s Express, which also happens to be the best Vietnamese place in the neighborhood. It seems that the chefs here have learned to cook at the speed of light, which means instead of waiting for your food, most of your precious time will be spent toggling between bites of bánh mì slathered in rich pâté and golden phở broth. Viet’s Express is a go-to spot for a speedy lunch or a foolproof takeout dinner. " - Gianni Greene, Chelsea Thomas

Viet’s Express Review - Medical Center - Houston - The Infatuation

"If “a quick meal” and “damn that’s good” were on a Venn diagram, Viet’s Kitchen, a counter-service Vietnamese restaurant in the Medical Center, would be right in the middle. If you find yourself in need of a quick meal, head to Viet’s Express, which also happens to be the best Vietnamese place in the neighborhood. It seems that the chefs here have learned to cook at the speed of light. Which means most of your precious time will be spent toggling between bites of bánh mì slathered in rich pâté and golden phở broth. Viet’s Express is a go-to spot for a speedy lunch or a foolproof takeout dinner." - Gianni Greene

My husband really wanted to try this place so I agreed. Honestly, I wasn’t really impressed. I had the beef banh mi and it was just ok. The chicken fried rice was too… moist? Idk how to describe it but it wasn’t too good. I had only a few spoonfuls despite adding sriracha in an attempt to save it. The pho I did not personally taste but my husband said it was good. The place was empty aside from us and it seems the same lady at the front is the one cooking and serving. I really don’t think I will be coming back here. I have better places for banh mi and pho that I go to.

I stopped into Viet Express after a doctor’s appointment down the road, hoping for a quick and tasty banh mi based on the good reviews. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. The chicken fried rice had too much grizzle, not refreshing or yummy at all. The Vietnamese coffee was way too strong seems like they didn’t make it right. This place is a mess! They serve ice for your drinks out of a cooler sitting next to the checkout stand, which is really unhygienic. The drinks to the fridge are all scattered and stacked in there sams club boxes around when you walk in, and the walls next to the tables are covered in soy sauce stains. It’s pretty gross, and honestly, this place looks like a health inspector’s dream for shutting down. It clearly doesn’t meet basic cleanliness standards. To make matters worse, I’m pretty sure the food made us sick because we didn’t feel great after eating here. I won’t be coming back. Go see how gross this place is inside for yourself, don’t be fooled!

Ordered the rice plate with me chicken and the the fried.Egg rolls. The egg rolls were nasty. The outside part of the egg ro was so chewy. I couldn't eat it. There was a bug that was crawling under my rice. As soon as I found that I just couldn't keep eating.I had to leave the food there and leave. It's definitely not authentic vietnamese food like I was told. I was so disappointed. I will stick to Pho Ben even if I would have had to drive an additional ten minutes, but I know that the quality of the food would have been ten times better. The lady forgot my drink. Also I had to ask for it after I had already started eating. But it wasn't so much as for forgetting the drink. It was fun, she was not friendly at all. She seemed very miserable to be there. I guess i've noticed.Customer service has dropped in so many places. But it's funny how prices don't drop.

Will have to go back and try the pho when I have more time. Spring rolls were delicious. I don’t eat meat on Fridays, so got the shrimp bahn mi and my friend got the tofu bahn mi. The shrimp were large and tasted so fresh and really good. I have only had beef or pork bahn mis, so this was a delicious twist. Very small and intimate setting. Might have to wait for a table, if super busy.

Google
Thank you for accommodating our group of 8! I’ve been here twice and both times the pho was DELICIOUS! I’d highly recommend trying the seafood and the combination pho. It’s a great spot for my coworkers and I to stop by for lunch. the prices are very affordable and reasonable (around $13 a bowl) ! I love pairing my meal with the coconut juice that they have in the fridge upfront. My colleagues like to drink the unsweetened green tea in the bottle and the soy milk by Yeo’s. I’m so thankful to have a Vietnamese pho shop like this around TMC area with these choices!

Google
I got the tofu banh mi and a viet iced coffee and my partner got the chicken banh mi - both came out quick and were delicious! Ingredients were very fresh and service was great. Recommend for a casual, filling and successful dining experience.

Google
I ordered a Thai Tea, chicken banh mi and an order of egg rolls. The staff was friendly and the order was to go, it might of been 10-15 minutes for the whole transaction and receiving my food. Great for my lunch break. Egg rolls: not the best I have had. I only got one leaf of lettuce. I would not order these again. Banh Mi: They we’re generous with the chicken. It was too salty for my taste. The tea was really good. I would not order the same items again but I would try other items that they have on the menu.

Google
With pho you either get it right or you don’t. Good pho starts with bone broth, onion and ginger and this place gets it right. You order and pay at the counter. If you pay by credit card you are asked how much you want to tip. I find this practice objectionable before you have even gotten your food. But it is common practice in the area. I ordered a combination pho. There is only one size that’s equivalent to a medium or a large bowl. It had more brisket than I expected and was delicious. On the other hand, they are stingy with the bean sprouts and dandelion. Overall this is a good bet and you won’t be disappointed.

Yelp
I was in the area after a round of physical therapy. I wanted some pho to take home so I placed an order online for pick-up. The place is easy to miss since it's right beside a bunch of hair salon-type shops with all the signs vying for attention. I stayed in the car while my husband popped in so I didn't see the interior of the restaurant. But our food was ready by the time indicated on the purchase order. (Maybe even before then. It was fast!) We both had the same thing: combination pho and an order of bbq pork spring rolls. I enjoyed both, though I was a little disappointed that our pho didn't include tripe. Also, for some reason I felt the pho broth was a little lacking. When slurped alone it was fine, but somehow I couldn't taste it when eating it in conjunction with the noodles, meat, bean sprouts, etc. The bbq spring rolls were great! I could happily make a meal out of just that! Overall, it was a solid experience. I probably won't be going back there much, not because I disliked anything but because it's not close to my house. As I said, it's near my physical therapy. Unless I'm already nearby, I don't foresee going out of my way to eat there. However, if it's close to where you live/work, go ahead and give them a try!

Yelp
Not a big fan of the Vietnamese food here. We stopped in for a quick lunch. COMBO FRIED RICE does not taste fresh and is quite oily. SPECIAL BANHMI SANDWICH is lacking in the pâté department. So please be sure to order extra if you like the pâté. There is limited seating at this establishment so plan to order just takeout. The location is quite convenient to the Medical Center.

Yelp
Omg the pho is so good here! So are the banh mi. My husband says they rival dons in bellaire. He is a die hard dons fan but said this one was way better. We actually had dons the day before and then came here to eat the next day so it was fresh in his head. Counter service and I would say maybe 20-25 people could fit here.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Their pho is pretty decent when you're craving it on a chilly day. I'd recommend the bun thit nuong (grilled pork vermicelli). Lately, I've been quite disappointed with the banh mi. I understand that prices of supplies have gone up, the last sandwich-- I had to go on a scavenger hunt for my protein. Sadly, it wasn't there.

Yelp
For an area that is as desolate on the Asian food front as the Med Center, I'd say Viet's Express more than does the job for folks feening for a little pho and craving for banh mi or rice / noodle dishes. They're a halfway decent option for Viet food in a pinch, and bonus points for being a family run biz and women-owned. It's bigger than it looks but that still isn't big enough for a group takeover. This is still a spot that's more ideal for solo dining and the tight parking lot isn't exactly helping. It's a quiet part of town despite its proximity to NRG and are closed every day by 6pm. Lunch is most definitely the best time to go. The pho is solid. Real solid. The broth isn't too pungent or powerful but it has the zest from the lime and a good amount of noodle to meat ratio. I would say the same for both their beef and chicken pho, but I really actually enjoyed their house special noodle soup was far and away their biggest winner. Banh mis like this are passable but I think there are definitely better Viet options just a stone's throw away. The fried spring rolls or summer rolls look and taste as they should, so no complaints here. I would consider eating in given how fast they are, but their takeout preparation game is good enough (#1) to consider the latter. At the end of the day, I'm alright with Viet's Express. I would say they're consistent with their offerings and give Viet craving folks a reason to give this place a shot when in the area. __________ (#1) Orderly. Clean. Well packaged. Not much more I can ask for.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Service is quick and friendly. Ambiance is nice. Quiet place to dine.

Yelp
Worst pho I've ever had in my life. Broth had no flavor at all it actually tasted burnt. The noodles were cooked well and it had a lot of meat. The egg roll was good.

Yelp
Wow, how did I not know about this place until now?! It's right behind Sprouts Farmer's Market, minutes away from NRG, parking is easy. We are so impressed with their pho. We had our pho for to go, our order is carefully packed with broth and meat together in a big container, rice noodles in a separate big bowl, and a big bag of a generous amount of bean sprouts and peppers. We called to order, and our food was ready by the time we arrived (in about 10 minutes). The pho itself is great! We got the combination pho, it's so worth it. The portion size is very satisfying, each bowl comes with a generous amount of a variety of different meat and plenty of both, flavor is on point, meat is fresh and tender. and price is very reasonable. We will be back for sure! If you are looking for something fast and soul warming, pho from Viet's express is your place.

Yelp
Chill viet diner near NRG & med center area. Good banh mi. Pretty fast to go service. Small & casual dining area.

Yelp
They have the best tofu vermicelli in Houston, and the tofu spring rolls / banh mi are amazing too! This spot is my favorite place for lunch after a long day at work. The friendly staff make it a very warm and welcoming experience every time I come, which makes me feel relaxed and comfortable while eating my meal. And when I am in a hurry and need something quick, they are very fast with getting my order out to me :) Thank you for being so awesome Viet's Express!

Yelp
Quick service for takeout. Great vermicelli with large portions overall (definitely of the meat and noodles) and a decent amount of veggies too
google avatar

Yelp
I got a tofu bahn mi with fried egg, with spring rolls on the side. It's amazing! First time trying, I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Decent food, but nothing remarkable. But it wasn't bad either. I liked that it was near work so I could walk there in the heat of the day and grab a banh mi thit nuong for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered To-Go online and it was flawless. Three orders of spring rolls: Shrimp, Chicken BBQ and Salmon. All were delicious. Ample amounts of dipping sauce. The rolls were not as tight as I usually like them, so they kind of fell apart while eating them. The chicken was nice and tender. One order of the Shrimp Pho. The broth was delicious. The mint leaves and jalapenos were fresh. The bean sprouts were not as fresh as the other veggies. The shrimp, noodles and broth were delicious. Cilantro was already added to the bowl. Filet Mignon with rice platter. The meat was tender and the fish sauce was great. I would order from them again.

Yelp
I ordered from here on a whim because a colleague had been talking about Vietnamese food earlier in the day. I'm a big fan of South and East Asian dishes so I was very excited to try the restaurant. I will preference this review with the fact that I have had very little previous experience with Vietnamese food so I just chose something on the menu without fully knowing what it was. That being said, I ordered the BBQ Chicken Vermicelli to-go. While the food was fresh, it was lacking in flavor. I'm not sure if this is just how the dish is prepared. I ate it, but the whole time I felt like I was eating because I was hungry, not because I particularly enjoyed the dish. On the plus side, they gave a great amount of chicken. I also was not a fan of the egg roll as it was over-cooked. Overall, I'd return to explore another Vietnamese dish, but the BBQ Chicken Vermicelli and egg roll was not for me.

Hanxiao S.

Yelp
The BBQ pork rice plate tastes good, but I only got one piece of lettuce in my combo.

Yelp
I've been driving by this place for years and never thought to check it out. Upon the suggestion of a friend who swears by it, I tried it a few weeks ago for dinner on a Monday night. Both the exterior and interior of Viet's Express don't look like much, and that's reflected in their prices. I opted for a very reasonably priced BBQ Chicken Fried Rice while my friend tried the pho. We ordered at a front counter and waited at our table as our food was brought to us by the servers. The food came out quite promptly, and was VERY substantial. It was hot and delicious, with a good quantity of meat. I was only able to eat about a third of the portion before feeling full. I tried a little of my friend's pho and found it decent as well. There's plenty of parking outside, the staff is friendly, and the portion sizes are great. The table next to us was rather rowdy and loud, but this wasn't a quiet restaurant to begin with. Definitely a good place for Viet food for a good price, without having to travel too far. I'll probably be back, but most likely for takeout.

Yelp
I just paid $12 for this shity portion of special fried rice. The box is about 1/3 of the way filled. This is the 2nd time I order from here & they ALWAYS disappoint. Their service is SHIT! If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The first time I ate here I ordered shrimp pho which took an hour & a half to be served to me. My husband & daughter had already finished eating their dinner & when the shrimp pho came to the table there were 2 shrimp in the bowl. Absolutely fucking unacceptable.
google avatar

Long T.

Yelp
Supporting my local neighborhood vietnamese joint so I don't have to drive to Asiatown for some banh mi, pho, vermicelli, rice plates, etc if I'm craving anything. Today I ordered the bbq pork vermicelli and added an egg roll and a fried egg to the bowl... also I always ask for an extra thing of fish sauce. Mix all together and you got a classic viet bowl of goodness.

Heather C.

Yelp
The pork bahn mi and beef vermicelli were both great- the meat was flavorful and the vegetables and bread were fresh. A solid option for a quick meal or takeout.

Yelp
This pst week I visited this place twice. They are under new management since my last visit over a year ago. Total upgrade!! Cute simple decor, clean and spacious. They employees were very nice and helpful. My first visit I ordered pho with strip steak and tendon. It was piping hot just like I like it. Very flavorful broth, tendon was excellent, however didn't like the steak that much. They have complimentary water so I chose that the first time. My second trip I got pho with tendon, shrimp spring rolls, and when you check in on yelp you receive a free tai tea with purchase. The tai tea was tasty, not the best I've had but it will do. Glad there is finally a decent pho place close to the medical center on those days I don't want to go to china town.

Yelp
So Viet's Express has done a lot of updating since I last reviewed this restaurant. Totally, different look, crew, and menu. I think it's safe to assume that the restaurant is under total new management. The new look is nice, modern and clean. It's small, but accommodates their usual crowd. My friend and I have visited this place a few times. The location is supper convenient considering it's in loops and near the medical center. Another plus, which they've now discontinued, was their happy hour. Between 3PM-5PM they offered a discount on their pho bowls. So that was definitely clutch after work. Initially when they introduced their new pho menu, I was super skeptical, but luckily they did not disappoint. However, one particular time I ordered their chicken pho and it was super greasy. I wasn't too pleased, but I decided to give them another try. I assume it was just a bad day, because they've been on point ever since. I recently tried their seafood pho. VERY GOOD. Normally people offer a seafood dish and hold back on the seafood...annoying right. Viet's Express does not. I was highly pleased! My friend ordered the bbq chicken banh mi. She was very pleased as well and it smelled SO GOOD! We will definitely return in the near future.
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best pho places in the area. Came to visit Houston with some friends and we ate here. The food was fresh and delicious! The hospitality and service was unbeatable! A definite must try! I have nothing but good things to say about Viet's Express. Whether you dine in or take out, the food is made fast and tastes amazing! We had the egg rolls as an appetizer and they were absolutely delicious! Then we had the pho with filet mignon and meatballs for the meal and it was amazing! The broth was so rich and savory! So delicious and authentic! I will definitely be coming back any time I'm in Houston! And I definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Judy C.

Yelp
Been to Viet Express many times and went today and realized they just went under new management and gained a new look. Very modernized now and has more seating for guests. I ordered the combination banh mi sandwich and Vietnamese iced coffee. Food was pretty good and the price is okay for the area (Medical center). I like this place because it's gets me my Vietnamese food fix near work. I will try other items next time because their menu is slightly different/revamped. Only small complaint is that I usually like my sandwiches cut in half because it's easier to eat.
google avatar

Carlin T.

Yelp
Not bad but also not the best vietnamese spring rolls I've had; however, I intend to keep stopping by because their prices are reasonable, they accommodate for allergies and food restrictions, and they don't use MSG! I ordered 1 chicken and 1 pork spring roll to-go, no noodles all veggies, and fish sauce instead of the hoisin peanut sauce. It came out quickly, and the lady who helped me was very polite. As for the rolls themselves, they weren't bad but do admit I was expecting pickled daikon and carrot, as I mentioned, and instead got a whole lot of carrot. Basically my rolls were made of meat, carrot, and lettuce - I believe icenurg instead of the typical romaine. It was wrapped neatly, which made it easy to eat, and the rice paper wasn't super thick - one of my spring roll pet peeves. All in all, 4 stars for pretty good food, decent prices, and cleaner cooking.
google avatar

Chaska C.

Yelp
Don't recommend at all. Ordered pho and it tasted like water. I was going to attempt to power through but my friend (who is a repeat customer) commented the same about hers. My friend even asked for different sauces to spruce it up. After we both decided that the broth was lacking, we gave this feedback to the chef/owner. After we expressed our customer dissatisfaction, we were met with a negative attitude from the lady. She was reluctant to rectify the situation and brought our new food out with disdain. I can't even review the shrimp salad because her attitude was so bad I couldn't enjoy my food. Feedback is part of being a business owner, so is customer satisfaction. Also, you can tell when the food is cooked with passion and this food is not.
google avatar

Joe W.

Yelp
Tried the thit nuong banh mi... it was small, pricey and salty. It did have a decent amount of meat but for that price I'll pass. I miss cali buy 2 get one free and super tasty. Houston Viet food is kinda whack and way over priced.
google avatar

Ngoc H.

Yelp
My sister and I decided to grab some lunch while out shopping. This restaurant was nearby so decided to give it a try. We ordered two grilled chicken sandwiches (banh mi) and grilled chicken vermicelli noodle bowl. Everything tasted ok. Need more flavoring on the chicken. Positive thing was place was clean, quaint.
google avatar

Bri R.

Yelp
Service was great and friendly. Coming from a person that eats pho only one in a while, it was actually pretty good. I got the chicken pho and I can't complain. The food came out in less than 10 minutes. It was a small place and I was expecting to have a server, but it was honestly nice to just order at the front when in a time crunch between classes. I really enjoyed lunch today.
google avatar

Griselda G.

Yelp
I had the spicy pho. It was delicious. Others had the filet mignon pho. They were busy eating and saying how delicious it is. Will be back.
google avatar

Dianna B.

Yelp
There was to much chicken that had to be cut up. I had ordered chicken soup with noodles. It needed more seasoning. It was good, but I have had better. There is place on Hwy 529 & Highway 6 that is the best place. Cannot think of the name. Sorry. That is all. I know they serve a lot of the people in medical center.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
Great food, clean and the Pho is amazing! The Spring rolls are great! I would highly recommend!
google avatar

Akilah H.

Yelp
You order and pay prior to sitting. The lady up front who took our order was not friendly at all. Food: I had the chicken pho and it was okay. I may come back to try their shrimp fried rice because it looked good.
google avatar

Keisha R.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Once I went I started going back twice a week. The spring rolls are fresh and full. The broth in the pho is very flavorful and they give you a lot of broth and meat, vegetables, etc. the pork rice dish is plentiful as well. The pork is well seasoned and the pickled carrots are the best. I always order extra. The fried rice has a nice flavor and again is a lot of food. The spicy noodle house special soup is good too. It's a place with good food, a lot of food, and the price is perfect. The lady at the cashier is always very nice and friendly. The online ordering system is fast an easy and they prepare the order fast.
google avatar

Trent H.

Yelp
Had the combination pho and shrimp spring rolls in a to go. It was a lot of food. Plenty of meat, fresh sprouts, basil, jalapeños, and limes on the side. The broth was very packed full of flavor! Healthy serving of noodles as well. This hit the spot, it was exactly what I wanted. Close to the medical center and we will be back!

Khalil J.

Yelp
Beef fried rice on the menu it cost $10 but when I go to pick up she charge me $12:45 , I asked why she said it was the tip . Then when I paid with my card it asked if I would like to leave a tip. Can some one make it make sense , this is Beef fried rice I can see the line in the box , pose to be at or above the line
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
Excellent eating everything on menu is super delicious can't say anything bad about this place. Presentation is the key every time I order it is packaged perfectly and never have I had to complain.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
I looked forward to trying this place after reading the good reviews. However, I think the food was below average and was too pricy for what it is. I ordered the combination pho. It was $10, which is more expensive than most places. The broth was very bland and there were just a few pieces of meat. I don't think I'll be coming back.
google avatar

Cici C.

Yelp
I absolutely love their food. The EGG ROLLS, the spring rolls, the BBQ pork vermicelli, the combination pho, the one meat pho (I choose meatball), the banh mi sandwiches. Fast service, clean & tidy interior. I eat here all the time.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
I don't know how I didn't know about this place. I just tried several offerings from the menu via Uber eats. And I must say, this is literally the best Pho I've ever had in my life.

Yelp
When the weather gets semi-cooler in Houston, I jump at the opportunity for some good ol' noodle soup cause what spells comfort more than something brothy and delicious?! I've seen Viet's Express a bunch of times but just never thought anything about it and have never decided to come give it a shot. The medical center doesn't really have any good options for Vietnamese food so I guess I'm guilty of judging a book by it's cover. Well pho sounded delicious the last few days so I finally decided to come here cause it was close and quick. I was not disappointed. The restaurant is clean - they keep it up well, thought it is pretty small. You order at the counter and there's maybe 5-6 tables down the left side. They have a few options for pho, rice, fried rice, and banh mi. They even have eggrolls and spring rolls. I ordered the pho with meatballs - be sure to get extra noodles if you have an appetite like mine cause the noodles are sparse in a normal order. The broth came out hot, very flavorful, and was exactly what I wanted. They have some pretty good pho - I was pleasantly surprised. So much so that we came back 2 days later for another bowl! The bf ordered the eggrolls and they were crispy and meaty. He says it's some the best eggrolls he's had. I can't say I agree, but they were filled with meat. The springrolls lacked herbs! I think the secret to a good Vietnamese spring roll is the Vietnamese herb and veggies. This one lacked it - came with noodles and carrots, but lacked the greens. We also had the bbq pork fried rice and I quite enjoyed it - it was flavorful and smokey. This place will definitely be added to my list of go-to's in the area! Yay!

Yelp
This place was a nice, surprisingly authentic restaurant. The food was delicious. Their egg rolls were one of a kind. Made a little different. The pho had a very authentic taste. It was definitely worth trying. Will need to come back to try other food. The store was also kept clean and nice. Very modern.
google avatar

Byron S.

Yelp
Pork banh mi was delicious. The bread was on point and meat was super flavorful. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu.

Yelp
I came here for lunch with a co worker of mine because we heard that this has been under new management. No doubt, I am definitely satisfied with the new remodeled look very relaxing, Not to Mention the Chicken Pho, Spring rolls, Fried egg rolls was absolutely amazing pretty good!!! We Paid 8-9 for each bowl which is reasonable considering the location. Customer service was great, Super friendly and accommodating and we didn't wait very long for our food either. I am definitely going back to try the other menu items! I love how they had the section for the utensil and they also offer free water. Very organized and clean.

Loan P.

Yelp
The lady working the counter was the absolute sweetest. I've got two picky kids who won't eat Vietnamese food although my husband and I love it. I asked her if we could serve the kids pizza from next door while we ate at her restaurant. She agreed without hesitation. While he and I ate, she offered to run next door to check if the pizza was ready. The pho was to die for. We devoured it. The price wasn't bad for the portion we received. Would definitely come again.

Yelp
Under new management, Viet's Express has upgraded the decor and menu. More seating has been added, with a modern Asian aesthetic so that diners may enjoy a meal to smooth jazz music. Dinner may be ordered past 7:00 pm. Service is fast and friendly. The pho is served hot and fragrant, with fresh jalapeños, basil, and bean sprouts to add to your individual palate. The BBQ Pork Rice Plate is savory and tasty with hints of lemongrass. The appetizer special was Smoked Salmon summer rolls, which are a fresh revelation with the peanut hoisin dipping sauce. I look forward to coming back and trying other menu items.
