12 Best Chicken Parm Sandwiches in Boston | Eater Boston

"Viga is part catering company and part lunch spot. (Note: It has two other locations in Downtown — one on Devonshire Street and another on Washington Street — though the Devonshire Street location is currently closed.) Its chicken parm is an elevated version of high school awards banquet hotel pan chicken parm — which is to say, it’s exactly what chicken parm should be. Viga is open for takeout and delivery via its own website, Caviar, DoorDash, and Uber Eats. The Clarendon and Pi Alley locations are open weekdays only." - Terrence Doyle

Google
I work right next door and this has quickly become my top option for getting lunch out. They’ve got everything you could want: cold subs, hot subs, pizza, salads, pasta. It’s served like a food court, a different counter for each type, so it runs very efficiently. The two sandwiches I recommend the highest are the chicken pesto or the Boccia. Both are found in the cold subs line, though I’ve also enjoyed the chicken parm sub from the hot line. They also run a special that changes periodically but never misses.

Google
This place will knock your socks off with their sandwiches, I've had three different sandwiches from this place and can say each one of them was delicious. If you're in the area, definitely stop in. There's not much parking but it's worth the travel to get there and taste one of these amazing sandwiches made by one of these. Amazing employees. Everybody there was pleasant in friendly and you get your food relatively quick. The price is might be some of the best in the area

Google
I ate a delicious chicken parmesan sandwich. Comfortable atmosphere. Fast service. Great portion sizes and pricing. To get into this building, you have to enter a locked door. They will buzz you in. Then you just turn right and go down the hallway.

Come here all the time for lunch. Great spot, good food and prices are good for the city

Google
Fantastic sandwiches - even better service I just ordered from Viga for lunch. There was a mixup on the sandwiches - I got back to my desk and realized I had a buffalo chicken instead of eggplant parm. This would be ok for almost any other sandwich, but I don’t like buffalo flavoring at all. I called them and they delivered a new sandwich within 15 mins. This was particularly appreciated as I didn’t have time to go back and pick it up. They also threw in a brownie which I didn’t need but will enjoy nevertheless. Really fantastic experience with a small, local business! And the sandwich was TERRIFIC! Thank you Viga!

Google
Viga is a great place to grab a quick lunch. The chicken pesto sandwich is a must-have. The pizza is good, and the lunch special is a good value for what you get. Expect massive crowds at lunch time, but they move people through quickly. There may be a line out the door, but you can still be in and out in about 10-15 min most days.

Chris Carr

Google
Great reasonably priced Italian. They do a tremendous lunch business but you won't be in line long the take out style (you can eat there but most people take out) is divided into different "stations". There's a pizza station, a pasta station, deli, hot sandwiches etc. The food is always fresh and the have one of the best marinara / pizza sauce, I've had in quite awhile.

Yelp
I really enjoy their Eggplant parm. You can order it in a container so it's not a sandwich. Add some hot pepper flakes and parm cheese on top and it's perfect. Come before 12 so you are not caught in a crazy line.

Yelp
Excited to try this place after reading reviews. Appeared clean and not busy when I arrived. Lots of options , I decided to play it safe and ordered chicken caesar salad. Nice welcoming lady behind counter assembled and tossed. When I looked at it in the clear container could not detect dressing. I asked for additional dressing and she readily provided me two little dressing containers. Once I got back to the office and tried it, definitely needed the extra dressing. It was mostly plain lettuce. Little bit of chicken and barely any shaved cheese. No taste..just blah, too bad. Won't be back.

Yelp
Another great meal at Viga 140 Clarendon. The new manager is terrific and the food is delicious! YOU CAN'T BEAT THE VALUE EITHER. I love this place. I'll be back.

Matthew C.

Yelp
Just got a turkey wrap, which was all shredded lettuce, barely any turkey, bacon, and they forgot the provolone cheese. This place has really gone down hill, why did I bother going here again. The girl looked miserable, and it shows in the wrap she made. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Yelp
Each & Every Time I plan a trip to Boston, Viga is my go to & first stop Breakfast Best ever, Lunch Is AMAZING so much to choose from & I believe over the years I have tried most everything they offer & There is not another Restaurant that can offer so many AMAZING choices form Salad & Pizza, Wraps, Sandwich's , Special Salads, You can get a pre-made Salad or head to the Salad Bar where you can have them build you a Salad the way you want it, Hot Bar has different choices everyday & A variety of Snacks & Desert , Its SIMPLY AMAZING

Yelp
Viga is definitely a good option for those that need a quick lunch. Often times there is a long line, but it moves quickly. My go to order is a caesar salad with chicken; however, when I'm in a rush, I opt for their prepackaged caesar salad without chicken.

K B.

Yelp
incredible cheese, chicken & brocolli ziti u have to move fast only open... 11am - 2pm.... m-f lovely, kind, accommodating people ! ! !

Yelp
You can find Viga Italian Eatery at 140 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA 02116. Viga caters many events for the Boston location of my current employer and as such, I sampled a couple of packaged lunches (well, actually one packaged sandwich lunch and one "sampler" style lunch with sandwich halves) while visiting just before Halloween. So this review is specific to those items I ate and only orthogonal to the restaurant location. I'm not sure if this is the location that produces the catered food, but it is the closest to the office and wins the lottery. Lunch number one was a Milano grilled chicken breast sandwich with homemade dill sauce, romaine and tomatoes. This was served on what was either a ciabatta or Italian baguette with thinly sliced chicken - the sandwich was about 9-10 inches long and quite filling. Taste-wise it was good but nothing special. The bag also held Sun Chips, a White Macadamia Nut Cookie, a Viga-printed mint, a moist towelette and a package holding knife/fork/salt/pepper. Lunch number two was more of a catered- platter affair with several veg and non-veg quarter-sandwiches. I tried the roast and it was quite good - I also had something like a Caprese salad-on-a-role that was rather innocuous and pretty much tasteless. If I had my druthers I would have loaded up on salad but for some reason that part of the cater went upstairs. In all, the food was very reminiscent of some of the local Atlanta chains like Panera Bread or similar. I'm betting the food would be much better on-location - it seems my Boston office caters quite a bit from Viga so there must not be many complaints.

Yelp
I enjoy Viga pasta and sandwich shop as fast and inexpensive take out. The food is good, but not remarkably so. The prices are excellent for Back Bay. The staff is friendly and attentive. THE DEAL: do watch them make your order To be sure you get what you think you ordered. I ordered the "Thanksgiving" sandwich, Which they offer on their regular menu. I did not check it until we got home, and ONLY got turkey on cranberry spread. At the very least, it should include stuffing.

Yelp
I believe they relocated to inside this 140 hotel since. Came in here near the end of closing and the food have been sitting out looking pretty dry. Ordered the chicken Parmesan pasta which the cook heated it up for like a few seconds . The sauce was pretty tasteless and bland. Maybe the pizza would be better than their pasta . Next time I'll stick to their pizza instead.

Yelp
Got to try this as part of a catered luncheon for work and it did not disappoint! The chicken parm was fresh and just the right amount of crispness. The sauce used definitely was delicious as well. I would definitely try them again.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken special today with pasta, white wine sauce, and tomatoes and asparagus. What I received was a bunch of overcooked (soft) cheap pasta and virtually no chicken. I mean like no chicken at all, except for some scraps. I truly would have been better off with blue box kraft mac and cheese, at least I would be getting some kind of protein. I'm not sure I want to try this place again, it really was disappointing.

Ella S.

Yelp
So I got the large lasagna. Almost 7 dollars for a medium sized piece, but it didn't even fill half of the large box. Big mistake. Now here comes the taste test of the lasagna. 1) You can taste the tomato sauce and the meatiness from the meat. That's it. It doesn't linger, there's no "wow!" factor. It's watery and oily, and falls apart easily. Honestly if you're craving pasta, just get the regular spaghetti and meatballs. Same flavor, same thing. It's decent and kind of stingy might I add. P.S. Some parts of the lasagna pasta is still hard And I also bought a cookie and it was almost over $2, tasted awful and I almost chipped my tooth and it was also a medium sized and the way they serve their food wasted so much plastic ‍AND the first time I got it, it hurt my stomach. However there Mac and cheese is soooo good.

Yelp
You get what you pay for at Viga - it's an appropriate spot for a quick and dirt cheap pasta lunch. Their pasta is average, slightly overcooked, and contained only about 2-3 chunks of chicken in their chicken broccoli Alfredo, but was consistent with their very low price (a containerful with bread on the side was around $8). Serving size was large and made me want to take a nap after lunch.

Christopher B.

Yelp
Good spot for reliable quick-serve sandwiches and Italian. Quality can sometimes be an issue. Buffalo chicken wrap and chicken club are favorites. Chicken parm is usually good, but they really need to be more consistent with sauce. Recent order only had minimal.

Yelp
Honestly, this place may be the worst best ohmygoodness delicious lunch spot near my new office. I bet you've seen them around town, but honestly, have you tried the pizza?! Viga may get a bland rep for its catered lunches. I understand. I'd feel the same way, man. But the way you feel, if you've only had catered Viga, is wrong buddy. Just plain wrong. Walking through the door your pounded with delicious smells from breads, to pizzas, to marinara, to pizza, oh, we're at the pizza counter now. Order it all. I'll pay you back. The pizza is delicious, the salad is incredibly fresh, and the line is never too long. I repeat. There is no line. Neo would have to wait in line anywhere else in this blasted city during the lunch rush. You, a commoner, will not at Viga.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
I do not get the draw of this place. The bread is good, but the stuff inside is less than generous. Not worth the price to me. It's just a food factory, so it seems quick, but is it sanitary? You make your own decision. There are a ton of places to get a better lunch in the Back Bay. Since starting to working in Back Bay, I have used Viga more for lunch delivery. Their food is always hot and delivered on time and my co-workers are happy, so I am happy to give them a higher rating. But I still pick other places to eat when eating alone.
google avatar

Lemuel L.

Yelp
I've worked in the Back Bay for three years now and Viga has always been a convenient place to stop by for the occasional lunch slice (or two). I've only gone on the pizza line since the other lines (salads/wraps, etc) get pretty long, especially during the weekday lunch rush. They offer a few special slices depending on the day of the week - but whatever you get, be sure to get it heated up to provide that satisfying crispy bottom and crust. For as long as I'm working in the area - Viga will always be towards the top of my lunch destination list.

Yelp
Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat for lunch on Marathon Monday. Shockingly, there weren't really any lines, even in the heart of lunchtime. We decided to split one of the tuna wraps and the lecce--which was the special of the day. The lecce was good as it came with turkey and some broccoli slaw, but we felt that it lacked a little bit of flavor. Maybe something sweet like cranberry on it would have earned it some higher marks. In addition, the tuna wrap was even more bland than the lecce--I asked for pickles on it, and that was the main flavor of the sandwich. They would have been served well to put some sort of spicy mayo on it or something just to kick the flavor up a notch. We also shared a bag of BBQ potato chips and a cheesecake brownie. The potato chips were just a store bought bag, but the cheesecake brownie was a great finish to the meal. It was definitely our favorite food of the afternoon as it was so moist and flavorful and had a great texture to it as well. Overall, though the sandwiches here were a bit lackluster, with just an addition of a sauce, they could probably be very good. Also, for all that we were able to get out of there for under $20, which was not too bad as well. Finally, this place has got to be one of the most efficient lunch places I've been to in the city, so if you're looking for something quick, this is not a bad option in the area.

Yelp
The cannolis is alright, it's expensive & it's far too crowded for my taste. I love Italian food so much but when place is so crowded it killed my interests!
google avatar

Meg L.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich with one freshly fried egg, slice of Swiss cheese and sausage on a wheat English muffin--for $4.25! So cheap and it was really good. The actual restaurant is very clean too with really nice staff. I haven't tried anything else but will hopefully go back for the pizza station or sandwich!

Yelp
New location, and this one is literally across the street from the office? Oh, damn... I'm in trouble now. This is the former location of a sub shop in the same building as former YWCA, and Hotel 140--- right at the intersection of Clarendon and Stuart. Now that Viga has moved in, taken over, and renovated this will be a big lunch hotspot for the Clarendon Street working crowd. All the Viga goodness you know from their other locations in the city, and a lot more space than the old Back Bay location. It even has plenty of seating!? My go to is the Chicken Parm sub on Whole Wheat focaccia--- never a bad choice. THis is a great fast place to grab lunch, a bit indulgent for a week day lunch... but always a good choice. Hot pizza, TONS of unique sandwiches.... seems that Rebecca's might have a run for its money for Clarendon St lunch locale!! They even do breakfast? On those days where I have to rush out the door, but need a warm gooey egg and cheese breakfast? I'll be sure I stop by! Viga is a Boston staple, and I am glad they opened a bigger one in Back Bay. Its welcomed!

Yelp
A star for convenience/efficiency, a star for great prices, and a star for quality food. They lose 2 stars due to a rude service experience. I showed up right on time yesterday to pick up an order I'd placed via fax for 10 people. The woman who came over to help us pushed 4 sandwiches toward me and asked for my credit card. When I asked about the rest of the order, she showed me the list I'd faxed, and they had highlighted the sandwich orders, but nothing else. We asked about the other 6 items on the list, and she just said that that was all there was. Clearly there were more items listed, so, assuming we couldn't understand Spanish, she called out to another woman at the register, asking about the other orders and sarcastically referring to my co-worker and I as "precious dolls." Another woman came over to take her place and located the rest of our order, which was in fact ready, but being stored in the fridge. She was very pleasant and helped us for the remainder of the transaction. I'll be back, but I'll avoid that particular cashier.

Yelp
Viga has become my new staple ever since the Chipotle e.coli outbreak. There are plenty of stations for different types of food here; I mainly get the sandwiches, but the pasta is usually decent and the salads are huge portions. My go to is the Giglia, which includes your choice of bread (I go for the baguette), bacon bits, chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato, and blue cheese. The food is nothing to rave about, but it gets the job done as a lunch option. It's relatively cheap (between $6-$9), quick, and decently good. A couple tips: 1. When you walk in, all the lines are usually jumbled for the lunch rush. The sandwich line is usually the longest, so if you're not there for one of those, walk up front and look for the actual line for the food you want. 2. Get a punch card. If you work around here, you're probably going to get this at least a handful of times. After 5 meals, you get your next one $3, and after the next 5, you get $5 off.
google avatar

Meredith B.

Yelp
This place has fast food Italian down pat. Tastes close to homemade and they have a line for pasta, a line for pizza, a line for hot subs and a line for cold subs, so you can get in and out fast. The slices are large and their prices can't be beat!
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
I have had the chicken parm sandwich a couple of tibmes at the Stuart St store, but this is the first time I have been to the new Clarendon St location. I had 2 major issues today from my 1:50pm visit. 1) The female working the hot sandwich station barely spoke English. I asked for oregano, and she was not understanding what I was asking for. She walked me over to the register to pay, and I could not understand how much she said I owed. The total did not show up on the register, and I was not offered nor did I receive a receipt. 2) More importantly, this sandwich was tasteless and the chicken cutlets were thin and overcooked. The tomato sauce on the sandwich was unseasoned and thin. This might be a good place for local office workers to go for a quick meal, but there are certainly better sandwich shops in and around the Back Bay area. I gave 2 stars because I added a star for nostalgic reasons.

Nina S.

Yelp
This is a quaint little eatery located in the YWCA building. We grabbed a quick bite to eat here while staying at hotel 140. The food was good for the price, the chicken soup really stood out though, and the staff were friendly. The pastries they had at the coffee bar looked delicious as well.

Michelle N.

Yelp
Viga donated so many sandwiches, salads, and desserts to the staff at Boston children's during the coronavirus pandemic ! Everything was so good (and individually wrapped!) It made our day and we appreciated being thought of! Thank you so much for being a great company with awesome food! Would definitely get food from here again!
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
Delicious food! Only location open for breakfast, early dinner AND on weekends. I would highly recommend stopping by!

Sandy S.

Yelp
The food here is good although I recently had egg shells in my omelette. The service in the morning is horrible, especially one woman. They get annoyed when we order and have the time forget to give me something then are rude about it when I ask for it again. Do they realize customers are what keep Viga in business to pay them a paycheck?

Jamie D.

Yelp
Viga is one of my staples for breakfast and lunch. Their breakfast burritos are amazing. I also really enjoy the Tatti salad and rotating soup specials. The staff is some of the friendliest in Boston and I'm always in and out in under 5 minutes. They're also one of the more affordable lunch spots in Back Bay. Their salads are $2-$3 cheaper than sweetgreen's and are so much bigger(and honestly tastier). Couldn't ask for anything better than that!

Stephen N.

Yelp
I work in the area and go to Viga for lunch sometimes but the last time I seen the preparer pick up the scraps of the salad off the metal counter and placed it in my salad. I thought salads are made strictly with the greens coming from out of the chute. That was insulting and deliberate. People walk back and forth, and I don't know how long those scraps on the metal have been out in the open in the air. I didn't want to say anything, but I'm just concerned that I don't want to potentially get sick eating here.

Christine W.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch after the pats parade and had a chicken parm sub which was absolutely delicious! They also got people through quickly even with a really long line. This place is a well run operation. My husband who was with me goes every week with buddies from work and he is always raving about how good the food is. I have to say that I concur. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jack C.

Yelp
Cheap, but not so good, food. Chicken Parm is cooked some indeterminate time long before you got there. Rubbery and bland. Honestly, I don't get the rave reviews

Jalila C.

Yelp
If you are looking for cheap but yummy food Viga is the place to go. The two things I don't like about this place is their marinara sauce could be a little thicker and their oatmeal in the morning can be a little less dry (add more milk). Besides my two dislikes Viga is the place to go.

Ian J.

Yelp
Awesome quick-serve Italian lunchtime spot. Sometimes feels like Seinfeld's soup nazi, but the staff is just really efficient with moving the lines along. Delicious eggplant parmigiana sub.

Diane M.

Yelp
My only compliant with this restaurant is their policy of Rounding Adjustment when paying with cash. I was a frequent customer at the Copley Square location and I would normally pay for my meals with my debit card at which time I was charged the true value of my meal, ( typically my meal consisted of eggs, turkey bacon= $4.58 or sometimes eggs, turkey bacon and pancakes = 7.58, but when I paid with cash I noticed on the receipt : ROUNDING ADJUSTMENT which indicated an additional charge of .02. and I would be charged $4.60 or $7.60. please note the .02 is listed on my receipt as a negative amount ( totally confused me on that one) I spoke to the manager and was told this is a choice of the owners to round up the cost of a purchase to avoid using pennies.... I sent a couple emails to the Eduardo asking for an explanation of this policy, which I have never heard of, with no response. I do not believe it is legal to charge your customers an additional cost just to avoid having pennies in your register. Considering how many people pay with cash this deceptive policy is basically stealing from their customers by using this method. Compared to the other restaurants around the Copley area Viga's breakfast food is the best and their prices are reasonable but the fact that I am being charged and punished for using cash is ridiculous. Until I hear from Eduardo or a rep from Viga's I will no longer patronize their restaurant.

Yelp
This is an awesome spot for lunch. Sandwiches on homemade focaccia bread are so tasty and fantastic price! Pasta choices are great and you get a huge portion. You can't beat the price! I'll be a loyal customer for sure!

Angel T.

Yelp
Visited family in boston and came across this great healthy place to eat. Pleasant and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Viga is one of my favorite spots for workweek lunches. The food is great and affordable and there are tons of options (pasta, cold/hot sandwiches, pre-made salads, make your own salads, pizza and calzones). The staff at this location is incredibly nice and friendly. Despite it being a super popular place with long lines during rush hour, you never have to wait too long. My only complains are that it's REALLY cold inside and they no longer take Level Up as a payment option.

Sandra S.

Yelp
"I've been going to Viga for the last six years...great lunch spot, affordable and high-quality food with a friendly staff!

Ruth M.

Yelp
This is a hard review to do because the food was great, but they showed up late and did not give me 1 of the appetizers that I ordered. I ordered 2 dozen arrancini piccolo, they only gave us 12. When I called Jennifer argued with me saying she did it herself and then proceeded to tell me she was too busy and did not have time to talk to me, well there is the problem, because you were too busy to notice we did not get everything that we ordered. Instead of making it right and apologizing to me, she kept arguing with me. After 15 minutes, she stated they would take it off the bill, I asked for them to email me the receipt, it took another 5-7 minutes to talk her into taking my email/contact info, I guess we will see if we get the credit. For a first time customer I am not impressed.

Yelp
Simply delicious! I've been going to Viga for the last six years...great lunch spot, affordable and high-quality food with a friendly staff! Thanks for the free pasta giveaway for your 16th birthday!

Pual M.

Yelp
Ate here for lunch today for the first time this place gets a lot of foot traffic even tho it's hard to find. There's a method to the lines ones for pizza ,ones is for pasta ones for sandwiches. This place was packed but I diddnt wait long at all about 10minutes tops. Staff was fine (probably friendly when its less busy). I ordered a large lobster Mack and cheese it had about for or five pieces of lobster in it some over cooked pasta and the cheese sauce was OK. The price was about 10dollars so not bad for Boston but the food really wasn't memorable so I don't think I'll be back.

Kevin J.

Yelp
I usually stop in when I need a pasta fix, the bread is great and is pretty cheap compared to most quick bites in the area

Madelaine F.

Yelp
Viga used to be my monthly treat. I usually bring my lunch to save money, but would go to Viga every so often as a reward. Well not any more. Everytime I've gone recently the grilled chicken seems to get thinner and thinner. It's like the manager thinks if they cut it as thin as possible and spread it out you won't notice there's no MEAT on the sandwich. Absolutely ridiculous to spend $8 on a sandwich with less than 2 ounces of chicken. You can't even taste it, only bread and the condiments. They used to serve a hearty sandwich, I would make 2 meals out of it. Assuming they are trying to save money by not providing the quality and quantity they originally had - maybe they shouldn't have moved to a location with a higher rent! I will not be back - I can make my own Viga Club - WITH CHICKEN in it!!!!

Pete V.

Yelp
Love this place for lunch; excellent pizza and hot sandwiches. The pasta is good, but you have to consider that, like most lunch places, you are ordering it to go and not a la carte, so don't expect "italian restaurant" quality and you'll be satisfied enough.

Richard T.

Yelp
I used to go to the Stuart Street location 8-10 times a month and have continued to go maybe 5-6 times now with the farther walk to Back Bay location. Not sure what is happening but pasta has been overcooked last 3 times there over the past few weeks. Ordered a different pasta each time so there is not an issue with one particular dish. The bread they give you has also been underbaked as well. The price is more than fair but am going to begin checking out other places to have lunch, bummer though, as Viga was absolutely my go to place for lunch.
