Spain’s Most Famous Chefs Have Just Opened An Affordable Tapas Bar in Girona

Inspired by Bar Roca as it was in the 1970s and by traditional Catalan classics, this new Girona tapas spot from the Roca brothers is designed to be far more affordable and accessible than El Celler de Can Roca while promising food that’s just as delicious. The menu, created with natural wine in mind, ranges from confits and pickles to hearty Catalan stews, flatbreads and sandwiches, with most dishes given a signature twist that lifts them above what you’d find in a standard tapas bar. Vegetables come from the gardens of Mas Marroch, El Celler de Can Roca’s event venue, and among the standout options are a mollette (an Andalusian roll) filled with sherry-doused kidneys and a coca de pan (Catalan flatbread) topped with black pepper bacon and Idiazábal cheese. With direction from Audrey Doré, head sommelier at El Celler de Can Roca, and a kitchen led by David Freijomil, the price of around €20 per person excluding wine makes it an exceptionally good-value way to experience the Roca brothers’ cooking. - Ricard Martín

We took a bunch of tapas (+10 different ones) and each of them was gorgeous... so I don't hesitate when saying this is a top tapas restaurant. The place is cool, the staff os very efficient and all food tasty... What else do you need ? Just make sure Illustration: rolan style squid for 13€ Labels: 2eat, #tapas, #fashion, #mustGo

Really top quality local tapas. Extensive superb wine menu with wines chosen by the Roca brothers sommelier (3 Michelin Stars - safe to say they know a thing or two about gastronomy). I put off going here in favour of a few other places with a bit more hype.... ithink was a bitconcwrned it wod be tourist focused as it is in a prime location fpr passers by, but glad we visited in the end. Very authentic food. Waiter was very helpful and friendly.

The chocolate fondant dessert really hits the spot! Simple & delicious, with the perfect texture and just the right level of moistness. It feels like this place is unfairly scrutinised simply because it’s owned by the Roca family. People need to remember that it’s NOT a 3 Michelin star restaurant, it’s a relaxed, affordable spot designed for locals to enjoy. Anyone expecting a fine dining Michelin star experience is missing the whole point and purpose of the place.

I was there during the first weekend of inauguration. I was looking forward to try brothers Roca’s food and did not disappoint. As I was alone, I was lucky enough to find a place (at the bar though) without reservation. I would recommend making a reservation in advance. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere like a typical Spanish tavern and I loved the “tapas” concepts including tastes and flavors from the region. I had a good service and even Josep Roca was there at the time helping with it. I loved the shrimp tortilla (tortillita de camarones) because it is crispy and delicious. The eggplant was pretty good too and the sauce was great. The canelones and ensaladilla rusa were okay, as I was expecting more of them. However, I was deeply disappointed of the dessert (cheesecake with coffee and cacao). Definitely was the lower dish in terms of quality. Good range of wines and beers. The prices are good, but I would recommend to come with more people to try different dishes because if you come alone, you need to order a couple to tapas to get satisfied. Good luck with this new project! 😋🌎🍽️✈️ Sabor Kairos August 2024

Thankful to find this place when everywhere else seemed to be closed for a post 4pm snack. Had the olives, cecina croquette and jamon iberico with bread. Quick and friendly service - drinks and food were great, would give the cecina croquette a pass though as not much texture. Everything else spot on and reasonably priced.

Review from 2024: Firstly I tried to came twice but was rejected not in a very polite way by stuff not in a very polite way which made me already disappointed, even most of the tables was empty. Then I decided to give it a go anyway and booked a table 2 weeks in advance and how disappointed I was when I tried the food… Very saggy potato galettes, flat bread with undercooked dough inside and the third dish looked like animal food. It wasn’t really close to what I saw on pictures and for sure below all my expectations. But on the good side I would say that it was quite cheap I hope something has changed, but overall unfortunately besides the big names who build this place there is not much to chase in my opinion.

Was really looking forward to this place given Michelin owner, hoping it would be as good as some of the innovative tapas places in Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Bilbao, or San Sebastián. Unfortunately not the case. Even with recommendations from the server, the tapas for 4 pax were quite ordinary
