"For more than 10 years, Megan Walhood and Jeremy Daniels have been churning out Norwegian lefse, potato flatbread, out of their adorable Airstream trailer on Southeast Belmont. The lefse are reliable comfort food for Portlanders, filled with combinations like meatballs with gravy or smoked salmon, dill, greens, and creme fraiche; any lefse pairs well with seafood chowder and lingonberry iced tea." - Nick Woo, Janey Wong

Yelp
Delicious Meatballs and Gravy! The Polse was also tender and flavorful. They both paired very well with the Beet Salad and Cabbage Slaw. The Mashed Root was delectable. Super creamy. Great side for the hearty meats.

Yelp
Can I move to replace all weak wrap material with this soft, powdery, paper-thin potato-based wrap, lefse? Sure, it still falls apart under an onslaught of lingonberry preserves, jarlsberg cheese, and mustard like anything else would, but at least it remains tasty while it's falling apart. I ordered the pølse wrap and was very happy with its tangy, sweet, sharp-cheesed explosion of flavors. The sausage was mild and not too heavy, probably because it's part potato. (This wrap is great for potato lovers due to being a potato sausage wrapped in a potato based wrap.) But where it shone was the unique combination of toppings. The pink, beet-y slaw turned the whole thing a Barbie shade of pink, a couple weeks too early to be timely.

Yelp
So about a year ago, my oldest son is telling me about a food truck in PDX that serves Viking soul food. How he had a wrap in the most delicious thin potato bread filled with meatballs, red cabbage and melted gjetost cheese (not sure if I spelled that right). I'm listening and all but not thinking in any way that I would ever end up at that food truck myself...until... I headed out with my daughter fro dinner last night and walked right up to the counter at Viking Soul Food...WHAT!! Once I realized where I was, I ordered the meatball Lefse immediately and was not sorry I did at all. What a truly delicious sandwich! My daughter got the sausage Lefse which was similar but included lingonberries which added a very special touch!

Yelp
Loved the smoked salmon wrap - it was delicious! Arugula and cabbage were crunchy and fresh, sauce was great addition to the salty smoked salmon. I kind of wish the portion was bigger but I still liked it a lot! If I ever need a snack and I'm in the area I'd go there :) the service is super quick and friendly!

Yelp
Checked in to the new Woodstock location on their opening day. Got an order of the Pølse/Sausage Lefse and one of the meatballs wrap. Also the lemon curd and one lingonberry dessert. Enjoyed the Pølse most, the tart and pickled flavors spoke to me. Sausage was OK, flavor came in more on the backend but the creamy consistency kind of threw me off. Deserts were just ok. $41 for the meal (plus 4% for using debit card). Don't know that we'll rush back but it's an interesting option.

Yelp
I enjoyed my visit to Viking Soul Food. It had been on my list of restaurants to visit for a very long time due to it being featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. It was in a food cart pod on SE Belmont. The service was friendly and I liked that there were plenty of picnic tables to sit at within the area. There's a lot of great sounding restaurants in that pod! I got to Norwegian Meatball Wrap. It hit the spot. The meatballs were so moist, the pickled cabbage was great, and the cheese gravy tied it together. The lefse didn't have much of a flavor but that was okay! It was a good vehicle for the filling of the wrap. It was filling enough for me but if I had a larger appetite that day, I would want to order a side. I'm looking forward to revisiting soon and trying some other items on the menu. The pølse and the pickled herring are the dishes that I am most interested in. However, I loved the meatball wrap so I want to get it again. Overall, I highly recommend trying out Viking Soul Food for yourself.

Yelp
I originally saw this place featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives and decided to come here on my next visit to Portland. This is one of many food trucks in a small lot that contains a variety of cuisines including but not limited to Thai, Mexican, Brazilian, and Japanese. There is no dedicated parking lot but there is street parking in the area. You can get each of their lefses as part of a wrap or as a plate and I'd recommend getting it as a wrap. We ordered the smoked salmon ($13), Norwegian meatballs ($13), and pølse ($12) as wraps. For the smoked salmon, I really liked the freshness of the salmon especially on a cold day. The dill sour cream was cooling to contrast the hot wrap. For the Norwegian meatballs, the cheese was a little overpowering and cloying at times because it was thick but I liked the meatballs. The pølse was similar to the Norwegian meatballs and I liked them both about the same. My favorite was the smoked salmon by far. The lefse wrap is made from dehydrated Idaho russet potatoes and is super light. It's slightly sweet and you can taste the potato in each bite. The wraps are bigger and more filling than they look. I enjoyed this as a lunch spot and it was nice to try a different kind of cuisine.

Yelp
Yum! Viking Soul Food had some amazing flavors, but wasn't for everyone. In addition we found the richness of the food we tried made it hard to keep up that "OMG This is amazing!" Feeling. First bite was always a 5* each item, but the 2nd or 3rd bite was more of a 3.5* or 4*. In addition the kiddos were not a fan. This is definitely one of my favorite spots, as the food is unique, there's just a balance issue on the palette that doesn't work consistently throughout the meal. What did we try? Polse Wrap, Salmon Wrap, Mushroom Wrap, and the Kraken Snack. As I mentioned all were tasty, and the salmon wrap had a nice fresh flavor. The hardest thing for all of us was how rich the foods were, making it overwhelming after a couple of bites. The kraken snack was really dang good, also ver rich, but this was expected. We will be coming back in the future.

Yelp
If you read the reviews, it's funny that almost everybody likes this place except for the one Norwegian person who hated it and said that no one in Norway cooks like this. I personally found the food to be pretty good, but I know nothing about Norwegian food. So if you just go to Viking Soul Food to enjoy the experience, without any regard to whether it's authentic or not, you may be very happy with it. I really liked the seafood chowder. There was a lot of fish and it had very good flavor. I also tried the Salmon Lefse and the meatball Lefse. Both were good, too. I'll probably be back.

Andrea A.

Yelp
We enjoyed a date night at their brick and mortar location on Woodstock. It's a small space serving food with big, unique flavors. I enjoyed the mushroom and hazelnut patties lefse, and the hubs had the polse as a salad. Mine was the best of the two, and it was very filling. We split the honey simply toasted lefse and the troll snack, which I'm still thinking about today and want to recreate as something to bring to potlucks and bbqs, it was so yummy. Although their cocktail menu is still limited, a little shot of Norwegian aquavit never hurt anyone. One little thing I would change is the location of the water station, it's a tight squeeze for the beautifully curvy people out there. Also, I'm not a fan of a backless stool, but if your core is stronger than mine consider this a five star review instead because the food was perfect.

Cassie F.

Yelp
Saw Guy Fieri's review on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and kept the info till we would arrive in Portland. When we arrived, there were so many choices of World Wide cuisines, but we wound our way around to find the Viking Soul Food. We shared the Norwegian Meatball Lefse. It was so flavorful and delicious, I almost wished I had ordered a whole one. I haven't always appreciated all of Guy's recommendations, but this one, hit it out of the park!

Cordelia K.

Yelp
Ordered from them for the first time on Sunday... called in 20 minutes before close for a take-out order for two... Kind person on phone was welcoming and sweet, and very enthusiastic considering I was ordering right before closing. Meatball lefse was definitely good... but smoke salmon lefse and beet salad was to die for.... and the raspberry cookies... oh so good!! Will definitely be going back again to try more from their menu. In fact, you can tell how good it is from the fact that I'm still thinking about it 48 hours later....and I never write reviews... and yet here I am.

Courtney S.

Yelp
Really unique offerings and interesting combinations of flavors. The deviled eggs were light, tangy, and absolutely mouthwatering. I really enjoyed the complex flavors in both the meatballs and the root vegetable champ, and the salmon was fresh and delicious. I was apprehensive about trying the pickled herring, but it was so tasty! I definitely recommend the Thor's Hammer Hot Sauce. My favorite dish was easily the Troll Snacks. I will be dreaming about that snack for quite some time!

Alisha Y.

Yelp
Great spot. Had the vegan mac & cheese and beet salad. Walking distance to my framily I visited last week. Thank you.

Flory W.

Yelp
I've been in this food cart twice, doing an event when they first opened up. We were searching for a Food Cart and it brought us to here. We missed Norway, and craving for some Norwegian treats. We ordered the Norwegian Meatball Savory Wrap and the Smoked Salmon Wrap. We shared half, and ate everything, we're starved! EVERYTHING was sooooo good! The bill called it Norwegian Meatball Lefse. I would recommend them to a friend. Since the salmon was light, (we also had Thai Eggrolls - next door), we're hungry before it was time for our normal dinner.

Myles H.

Yelp
Love the Salmon Lefse wrap they serve here, the honey and cane sugar leases are amazing. Wonderful menu options for vegetarians/vegans. Food is always made to order, quick service and friendly staff!

Jason C.

Yelp
I was looking for a snack while doing laundry and had been wanting to try them out. I love lefse and was super excited to try them out. I got the smoked salmon lefse. I was worried it would get soggy due to the cream sauce, but it was the perfect amount. All the flavors were fresh and subtle. I found it to be the perfect bite without making me feel like I needed couch time. Look forward to checking out more tasty dishes in the future!

Taj T.

Yelp
Viking Soul Food has pillaged and stolen my heart. On a gloomy Portland day, every vibrant dish shone with appetizing colors. The prices are very fair for the straight up gourmet ingredients and flavors! No surprise that it's one of Portland's flagship food carts. "Pickled Egg" - like a deviled egg but so much better! Even egg haters might have to admit this is delicious. "Smoked Salmon Wrap" - I was in love with the creaminess and the pervasive flavor of dill. "Roasted Apple Lefse" - the perfect winter time dessert. Hearty apple flavors with that creamy chèvre are rousing when paired with honey. You'd be licking your sticky fingers clean if it weren't for the incredible, fresh Lefse.

Rose L.

Yelp
This place was located in a very rustic, homely area filled with other food stands as well. They're super fast with the prep and it was pretty good. I personally am not a fan of pickled vegetables but the rest of the wrap was pretty good. It had lots of flavor and the actual wrap itself was very soft and complimented the food well. I wasn't too big of a fan of the dessert wrap I got. It was a wrap filled with goat cheese, walnuts(?) and apples. The goat cheese and the nuts wasn't too great together for me, but I can see why others may like it. Though the food is good, 12 dollars per wrap is a bit expensive when it comes to portions for its size.

Nahush G.

Yelp
For some reason I thought the Polse Wrap was going to be very heavy but it wasn't. It was so light and airy with great tangy flavor. Wish it had more meat so I could feel more like a Viking but then again, they probably suffered from malnutrition which is why they had to pillage their neighbors. After finishing the wrap, I'm sure I consumed an optimal amount of food to not be malnourished but my Ghrelin signals were telling me that I should keep eating. So I listened to them intently, argued a bit and then negotiated the following deal. A snack was appropriate. So I ordered the Kraaken Snack. For some reason I thought THIS was going to just be a piece of regular rye bread with fish. It wasn't. It was the heavier German style bread with nuts and seeds. The hearty stuff! So good! The Kraaken snack had some fat weight to it too so it was absolutely delicious and turned my Leptin signals on aka it filled me up! Should of just ordered two of these to begin with calling it a day. After consuming carbs, I decided to grab a coffee. It took minimal effort. Total step count between the Viking Food Truck and Coffee was 13 steps but I have long strides so let's round it up to 15. Enjoy!

Wendi K.

Yelp
I've never had Norwegian food but if this is a good representation of it I LOVE. Got the Smoked Salmon Wrap ($11). The wrap was teeny tiny and pricey for the size but I'm honestly not even mad because it was friggin amazing and hit the spot. It looks like a small amount of salmon but it's so flavorful it complements the greens perfectly. The dill sauce is tangy and yummy as well. And the lefse wrap is freshly made and absolutely delicious!! Food truck located in a cluster of food trucks with an outdoor seating area. Food came out quickly and service was polite.

Tom T.

Yelp
After a long wait, I made my visit. I am truly insulted. I ordered the Polse, and it looked like it was put together by a small child. My "1 \ 2" potato sausage was cut up and placed in two rows of four, with cheese, over two flavours of shredded cabbage. Ummm, I'm old enough to cut my own sausage, thank you very much. My lefse? Are you kidding me? Over $4 for dough with honey and butter. Ikea's got better licks. Really. Is lingonberry an expensive ingredient that you use sparingly?? I'm the dum dum for falling for this theme. (no photos because, again, Yelp erased my pic)

Jessie S.

Yelp
I've come twice for the polse since moving to the area and will be back for the lemon curd and salmon wraps! The service was friendly, food did not take too long and it was uniquely delicious.

Douglas R.

Yelp
Fantastic, delicious food. I live 6 months a year in Denmark and this exceptional Norwegian/ Nordic inspired food is simply amazing. Make the time, take the time to go experience this unique food.Meatball Lefse, simply the most delicious food cart food I've ever eaten.

Sylvie F.

Yelp
Excellent food and really, really great service. Last week I placed a to-go order and then was delayed by a family emergency. The waitstaff completely remade my order so it would be fresh when I was able to pick it up. Incredibly kind! We will be back.

Eli D.

Yelp
Went here (Woodstock) on a crazy hot day, and got the salmon wrap and an iced tea as a light late lunch. It was perfect. Really good food, and nice people too!

Angela P.

Yelp
A colleague suggested this place our employee lunch because she said she hadn't had Scandinavian food. My response was "I feel like there is a reason for that." I like to think of myself open minded when it comes to trying new things so I went with it, and I am so glad I did. I had the vegatarian wrap which was a house made mushroom and hazlenut patty. It also included two of my favs, which are sundried tomatos and argula. It was light and delicious.

Brandy D.

Yelp
So good! We got a little savory, a little sweet and both were delicious. As a forever fat girl, I found the portion to be small but the flavor more than makes up for it.

Frances L.

Yelp
The food is good the price is a little inflated.... $4.50 for one egg cut in half, I mean it was delicious and all but for $4.50 I can't see myself buying another. The wraps are a little on the light side for proportion to price but I guess your paying for flavor and they do bring that here. The lingdonberry jam dessert wrap was the perfect end to our meal.

Todd G.

Yelp
Had this years ago and was blown away...been talking about it for years because they built a big lame building right where it used to sit. Just found out it's basically right across the street tucked away in a cute little food cart area, but not visible from the street. SO happy I found it again.

Candy C.

Yelp
Yum. It was very different from regular food stall offerings but quite delicious. I ordered the traditional potato/wheat flatbread (Lefse pølse). It was stuffed with sausage and tangy red cabbage. Lingonberry iced tea was fantastic. It was filling but not overwhelming. Service was fast- it was prepared in a jiffy. A great spot for a quick lunch.

David B.

Yelp
Located in the back of an unsuspecting food cart collection, Viking Soul Foods is definitely a gem. Highly recommended on sites like Eater, this place is worth the hype. VSF has a variety menu with a lot of Scandinavian food options. Their Kraken Snack special (Herring with Jarlsberg on Rye) was delicious! Such an interesting blend of taste for me that I am not used to. I also got a side of their Root Veggie mash (Champ!) and it was so delicious! After days of eating large portions of heavy food at other Portland locations, this was a welcome refreshing meal. Also, I always love Lingonberry tea, so their large iced tea was perfect to wash it all down. While I didn't have their Lefse myself, it looks very freshly made and mouth watering. A great place to go for a good food cart experience. Seating was plentiful when I went, but not very socially distant.

Sheila G.

Yelp
Not sure why this place has such great reviews. I got the meatball sub and couldn't finish it. The meat was flavorless, and they put so much coleslaw and sauces on it I felt like I was eating a mush soup. I do love the location though. Luckily it's surrounded by other food trucks so we were able to get something else to eat too.

Heidi J.

Yelp
This was such a fun little place! Having been to Scandinavia, I was really excited to try this place. The food was great! I recommend trying the smoked salmon lefse wrap

Darren O.

Yelp
Been here a year or so ago, I'm scratching my head as to why it took so long to get back. I just had the meatball leif - one of the best things you will eat. Norwegian meatballs, a sour cream sauce with a red cabbage slaw. I may be missing some ingredients, but let me say it is so good!

Holly Y.

Yelp
The food here is incredible!! We ordered the full menu for a birthday celebration and truly it was all a delight! My favorites were the steelhead lefse, the root veggies, and don't skip dessert! Also the troll snack is so delicious the staff are super friendly and definitely are in the business of spreading love through their food and cheerful demeanor. Absolutely worth the trip to go in person but it also makes great takeout!

Thomas P.

Yelp
Worst food I've ever had, I'm from Norway & this is nowhere near (authentic), it's a disgrace.. Norwegians never prepare their food like this! My wife & I both felt very sick after eating. We've gone to this play before, it was better but subpar. This is awful, the rating is baffling to me, I would avoid eating it at all costs. The price is outrages, 42$ for two people.

Vince L.

Yelp
First time trying Norwegian food ever. What an experience. Very cute outdoor food court.

Adalina M.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place after reading all the great reviews, but was extremely disappointed. Small portions, super salty food, and very high prices (considering portion size) do not add up to a great dining experience. The food was fresh and they do use quality ingredients, otherwise it would have been a 2 star review. The one item I thoroughly enjoyed was the pickled herring. Unfortunately, do not see myself ever returning.

Paul L.

Yelp
Since Fish Box departed the food truck scene, I haven't found my fish fix but I consoled myself with the smoked salmon wrap and seafood chowder here. The ingredients in the wrap were so fresh and the flavors were a great balance against the heat of the chowder. As a slight chill filled the air, I was glad I came here.

Jayne H.

Yelp
Stop searching for places to eat THIS IS YOUR SPOT FOR LUNCH! I mean it's Viking street food ummm YES PLEASE! The meatball wrap is just like my grandfathers danish meatballs they're beyond perfect. The lindgonberry and cream cheese dessert wrap also so damn good. If you pass by this cart and don't try it you'll be sorry trust me. So good I called them to let them know how amazing it was. You guys don't be scared to try something new it's stupid good and you'll be thanking me later! We also had the chicken "wrap" Everything was damn good and I'm danish so there you have it. DO IT!

Jacob H.

Yelp
Had a chance to eat in a food truck area, and saw this. It caught my eye. As I live in Minnesota, it almost seemed an obligation to try this place. I was not disappointed. Lots of vegetables, tasty lefse, it was a filling meal. I'd gladly order again from them.

Megan F.

Yelp
Fantastic wraps of salmon and levsa bread! We ate here as part of the EAT Adventures food tour. This was my favorite food!! The wrap was full of delicious salmon, soft and chewy levsa bread, which the guide said is traditionally Norwegian bread. It's texture is similar to pita bread. The hubby had the cream sauce but I keep myself dairy free, so I didn't try it. They have some picnic tables near the food cart so you take your food to go and can sample other nearby vendors. We parked on the street and walked to the carts.

Samantha B.

Yelp
I mean, it's amazing. I take everyone who visits us here to try the Norwegian Meatballs lefse. You will absolutely wonder why you've never known this kind of thing existed before, and come up with an excuse to come back and try every single one.

Ishmael D.

Yelp
I came to portland and was introduced to this food truck by ways of a local tour. Omg they has this amazing vegan wrap, and luckily I was the only vegan on the tour so I got to eat the whole wrap. You have to swing by this food truck and try their options. It is set up like a small farmers market but with great food (I'm sure there are plenty more in Portland). I'm definitely coming back to this food truck next time I go back :)

Cinthia A.

Yelp
Such a good find. The salmon wrap was light and tangy and then hazelnut mushroom also did not disappoint.

Cannibal C.

Yelp
This is a fantastic restaurant. The danish smorbrod I had in my most recent visit is one of the best meals I've had in Portland. Lovely staff. The truck is a little bit tucked away so keep your eyes peeled and don't miss out.

Em L.

Yelp
Being a Norwegi-Creolean, I think I've finally found one place I'm 100% qualified to review. Let's start with the lefse. Lefse is a potato and flour tortilla of sorts, used to wrap up sweet & savory fixin's. Viking Soul's was papery, flour-y and light. In short, quite good. We had the salmon wrap, and the vegetarian option. As a mostly veg person, I thought I'd dig on the veggie one more. Nope, salmon for the win! The fish was flavorful but not too fishy. The dill creme fraiche could feed me until I turn 90. I hate to say it, but I found the vegetarian wrap bland - it didn't have the tangy contrast of our other food. Perhaps this is how Norwegian food is supposed to taste though. Overall, it was a treat to dine on Norwegian food. My great grandfather used to eat lutefisk with delight. Something tells me he'd attack Viking Soul with the same gusto. Check it out!

Allyson H.

Yelp
Delicious Scandinavian cuisine! Came to this little encampment of food trucks and was not disappointed. It was pouring rain and we were able to order and eat under large awnings. The eating area was huge and even heated. Happy with the restrooms (also covered) and a convenient ATM as well. But the food is obviously why you come here. I had the Norwegian meatball lefse and my husband had the smoked salmon. Both were unique, large-portioned, and delicious. The meatballs came with a goat cheese sauce that was deliciously creamy and flavorful. My husbands wasn't as creative, but had the usual dill tzatziki style sauce yet with added greenery. We would return here in a heartbeat! Although all the other food trucks are tempting too.

Mary Beth L.

Yelp
Bloody good food truck...I only wish I had been in Portland long enough to go more than once. Lovely use of cabbage and the caramelized cheese was scrumptious.
