Vila Joya

"Vila Joya is one of those places in the world that is close to our idea of paradise, and eating here is akin to ascending to culinary heaven! While its stunning setting and sea views are impressive in their own right, Dieter Koschina’s cuisine merits special mention, given the ability of this Austrian-born chef to combine the classic cooking of Central Europe with the flavours of ingredients from Portugal, a country he fell in love with from his first visit here over 30 years ago. The excellence of his cuisine is evident in every mouthful – the result of superb execution, and a bold, playful approach to less conventional flavours which occasionally include tropical fruits. His cooking is centred around two tasting menus, one which changes daily, the other seasonal, and features dishes such as Balfegó tuna marinated with avocado, quinoa and tiger’s milk; Carabinero prawns with Datterino tomato and jalapeño; and Miéral pigeon, banana and coconut. The delightful panoramic terrace is perfect for a romantic supper." - Michelin Inspector

We dined here for our honeymoon and booked the tasting menu. The service was impeccable and we had the most beautiful views over the cliffs. The attention to detail with each course was second to none, there were also a number of surprise dishes which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for a memorable meal.

Only problem with this establishment is the cost of food and drink ,!! Everything about Vila Joya is divine , food , staff , venue , location but getting charged 125 euros for a bottle of AF wine did actually spoil our lunch. That aside would recommend to anyone. Superb service and ambience x

now back on first days of opening 2023: much less happy this time than 2022 and 2021. First: bad seating planning: all guests were seated with a garden and sea view; but in spring the sun sets too early and we had a view on a black garden; zero illumination of the normally gorgeous garden; Dinner was excellent, but wine pairing was really bad: we did not like any of the five wines and did not consider that the pairing was good. So we left the dinner with a bill of more than one thousand euros for two being unhappy.

We had a family accident and were forced to cancel our entire European trip. While we were unable to get through to the hotel by phone to explain our situation (the staff was unsure why the number was not working as it was in their end) they were very responsive by email/message and cancelled our reservation without charge. We will definitely rebook for another time and greatly look forward to visiting what appears to be a magnificent hotel! Sincerely

**A Culinary Symphony on the Atlantic Coast: Vila Joya** **Introduction:** When you enter the exclusive Vila Joya, situated along the Algarve coast, you immediately feel the promise of something extraordinary. The sound of the waves, the soft light pouring through the windows, and the gracious welcome from the staff set the tone for an evening that will leave no sense untouched. This culinary institution, awarded two Michelin stars under Chef Dieter Koschina’s leadership since 1991, is not just a restaurant but a celebration of craftsmanship and creativity. **The Amuse-bouches: The First Notes of a Culinary Symphony** The meal began with a series of amuse-bouches that offered a surprising symphony of flavors and textures. The first bite, a delicate potato soufflé with citrus and caviar, immediately signaled that the evening would be full of refinement. A subsequent bite of tomato and passion fruit tantalized the palate with its balance of sweet and sour. The further parade of amuse-bouches, including a tartlet with chicken and curry, octopus, and a delicate croquette of pata negra, confirmed that Koschina’s kitchen revolves around technical perfection but also playfulness and surprise. Each bite was an invitation to explore how far flavors can be taken without losing their integrity. **The Dishes: A Delicate Balance of Flavors** The first course to arrive was a warm lobster with radish and a coriander foam. Here, Chef Koschina showcased his mastery in subtly manipulating flavors. The intense taste of coriander, usually dominant, was tempered so that it was merely present in the background, allowing the lobster to shine, while the coriander added a touch of freshness that brought the dish into balance. Next came the red mullet, served with a silky butter sauce with saffron, along with tomato, onion, and bacon. The combination of the rich butter sauce and the light, delicate flavors of the mullet brought a beautiful balance to the plate, with each ingredient playing a role in the overall flavor experience. Following this was the veal medallion, accompanied by chanterelles and a veal tartare with herbs. What made this dish truly special was the jus of grapes and foie gras. The sweetness of the grapes and the rich, earthy tones of the foie gras added depth to the dish, making it a true culinary discovery. **The Transition to Sweet: Refreshment and Elegance** After the powerful savory courses, the meal was subtly rounded off with a cucumber sorbet, accompanied by Reijpenaar cheese. This dish provided a fresh and surprising twist, with the sharp freshness of the cucumber interacting beautifully with the nutty, spicy tones of the cheese. The dessert was a delicate ring of white chocolate, filled with raspberry jam and served with a champagne sorbet. The balance between sweet, sour, and creaminess made this dessert a worthy conclusion to the meal, with the refinement of the flavors maintained until the very last moment. **The Final Dessert: Pecan Tartlet with Caramel Ice Cream** While the evening had already been full of culinary highlights, the final dessert was a worthy finale. A small tartlet filled with pecans, accompanied by wonderfully smooth caramel ice cream, brought a sense of comfort and luxury. The deep, warm flavor of the pecans was perfectly balanced by the silky texture of the ice cream, creating a perfect harmony of sweetness and nuttiness. **The Finale: Friandises to Dream Away** A meal of this caliber deserves a fitting conclusion, and this was provided in the form of an elegant selection of friandises. From a refined pineapple tartlet to a decadent chocolate-vanilla truffle, these final sweet treats offered a beautiful ending to a truly impressive culinary experience. **Conclusion: An Unforgettable Journey Through Flavors and Emotions** Vila Joya is undoubtedly one of the jewels of the culinary world, where each dish tells a story and each bite transports you on a journey.

The hotel is an amazing enclave in the Algarve. Small number of rooms with plenty of space to relax by the pool/beach. We stayed in Suite Saudade which was next to the spa but still very quiet. It has a nice sitting area, comfortable bed, and an amazing spa like bathroom. The gym is small and they are working on expanding the spa so continuing to improve on the amenities offered. We enjoyed Vila Joya Sea (beach shack) so much the first night that we booked a reservation on our last night as well. There we many things on the menu and with only two of us we did our best to try as many as we could (do not miss the beef quesadilla - the meat comes from the Michelin restaurant). We also enjoyed dinner at Vila Joya (Michelin restaurant) and it was incredible. We have had the great fortune of enjoying a number of Michelin restaurants around the world and we can tell how this has maintained its stars for so long - an amazing journey. We chose not to rent a car while there and spent most of our days relaxing by the pool or walking along the beach. Staff was very attentive. There is not a lot to do in the surrounding area and the hotel is in a residential area (cars line the street each day to go to the public beach) but you feel very secluded in the hotel. A great break in the middle of our travels in Portugal.

We have been here four times now. One of our favorite places to stay when we travel for a long weekend without kids. So personal, waking up with the sound of the sea. Suite Saudade is our favorite. The food is magical. From breakfast to dinner, perfect. Vila Joya Sea in particular is fantastic!
