Went to Villa Barone in Collingswood tonight for dinner. Just as a qualifier, let me say that I am a retired chef who ended my career teaching restaurant business management at the Culinary Institute of Virginia. I know a little. When someplace disappoints me, I don't hold back. When someplace really impresses me, same.
Villa Barone is impressive. The atmosphere and service were excellent. The place was very busy, but I never felt crowded or uncomfortable, far from it. I was very relaxed. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Always there when you needed something, and the food came out promptly. Our server was cordial and pleasant.
Normally the complaints I may have are about the atmosphere and service, because, to be fair, I can usually cook a better meal. I worked in kitchens for fifty years. My meal was better than what I could have made. It's absolutely delicious, and it was maybe a little on the large side, but I finished it. It was so good. It's very nearly perfect.
My only critique, as a former consultant, maybe their prices are a little too low, but they seem to know their business, so I won't question it. It's a great value, and their restaurant was packed, but in a fun, festive, well managed way.
If you haven't yet been, you should certainly add Villa Barone to your "Must Go" list. It's easy and convenient to get to with plenty of nearby parking. I'm grateful to our friends who took us there.
