Villa Belle Epoque

"Occupying conjoined 1920s villas in Maadi, a leafy suburb created to house British civil servants and Egyptians working in the court of the Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, this whitewashed structure with dark colonial green window casings and balcony trim. Egyptian owner Tarek El Gendy and his Dutch wife, Beryl, have filled the 32 guest suites with a tasteful mix of contemporary Egyptian art and European and Oriental antiques. Guests can curl up in a library stocked with design magazines and books on Egyptian art and history, or lay by the pool in a lush garden of mature mango, acacia, and date palm trees. Both restaurants serve typical Egyptian dishes (the chef stirs coconut into his baba ghanoush, a tasty twist on an Egyptian classic). Amid the quiet neighborhood of historic villas, mosques, a synagogue, and low-rise apartment buildings, the hotel is a five-minute stroll to Road Nine, Maadi’s main street, popular for its mix of vegetable sellers and small souks offering shisha pipes, cartouches, and other souvenirs. The Cairo Metro stops here on the way to Coptic Cairo and Tahrir Square, while the Pyramids are 30 minutes away by car. The helpful hotel staff can arrange taxis, feluccas, and private guides."

Villa Belle Epoque | Best places to stay in Cairo

"Cairo has few boutique hotels and none as well run and luxurious as the Belle Epoque. In a garden quarter in southern Cairo, the Belle Epoque occupies a 1920s villa that exudes period style and refinement. Developed in 2009 by a family that also operates small luxury boats on the Nile, the Belle Epoque is unique in the city – independent, elegant, luxurious and a far cry from the impersonal large chain hotels. There’s a lovely outdoor pool overlooked by palms, mango and guava trees. Staff are extremely friendly and attentive, helping to create a relaxed ambience. It is removed from the main attractions though, and it can take a long time to drive into the city centre (Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo, for instance) through Cairo’s traffic-clogged streets. The metro station, however, is five minutes walk; you can be in the centre in 20 minutes. " - Matthew Roach

We held our engagement dinner at their beautiful garden, I have to say , one of the best experiences in customer service I have received in Egypt ! The whole staff is very friendly , professional and eager to help . I had some reservations since I read some reviews about the food and some saying service people are rude, but I have to say that was not our experience in the many visits we had leading up to the engagement. Food is spectacular , portion is huge , presentation is great and the coffee was worth a million dollars. A wholesome experience and it felt like we were at home . Everyone was more than amazing but , a special thank you for Mr Ibrahim who made us feel welcomed from the first phone inquiry to the minute we stepped out the property , thank you for having the patience to answer all of my questions 🌸

Review of the open air restaurant at Belle époque: We went today—my friend, her daughter, and I—to the restaurant where we usually enjoy a fair good food, but unfortunately our experience this time was disappointing. We arrived at 8:45 AM, and although the place was completely empty, the staff were not ready to receive us; they spent time cleaning the table and sweeping around us before we could sit. The dishes arrived late, and when they finally came, my friend’s egg dish was cold, and the toast was not fresh, so she had to ask for it to be reheated or replaced. As for me, I chose to eat my dish despite its poor quality, because my friend had already requested a replacement and I did not want to escalate the situation. Unfortunately, the French toast was not up to its usual standard; it was greasy and burnt around the edges, to the point that it upset my stomach for the rest of the day. We also faced an uncomfortable situation regarding seating. When I called the restaurant earlier in the morning to reserve, I was told the place was empty and that we could come anytime. However, upon arrival, when we asked to sit by the pool, we were told that the tables were reserved. This surprised us since the entire area was empty. The waiter pointed to the long table by the pool and said it was all reserved. We accepted this and sat where they asked, but about half an hour later we saw them separating the long table into individual tables—yet all the tables around the pool remained empty until we left at 12:30 PM. What made things worse was the unreasonable explanation the waiter gave us. He said that to sit at the poolside tables, one must book two weeks in advance and pay a deposit, which is completely illogical. We are experienced travelers—experts in tourism, food& beverages management. We are not naive who can be convinced with unrealistic excuses. We would have preferred to hear the real reason, which we are sure would have been more credible than what we were told. As for the food quality that morning, it was far below the standard we are accustomed to, which led us to conclude that the cook or chef responsible for breakfast was not present. Even though the staff informed me on the phone that breakfast is served from 8 AM to 12 PM, the poor preparation and overall quality made it clear that the specialist in charge of breakfast was not there. In short, it was a very disappointing experience compared to what we usually expect from this place, and we truly hope that food quality, organization, and transparency with customers will be improved. To be fair, the staff were friendly and polite, but unfortunately not professional at all in handling the situation or communicating clearly. A last point, they charged 12% service and 14% taxes without giving us any receipt, which is against the law, as taxes cannot be added without issuing an official invoice. Overall, the experience was disappointing. We hope the management reviews food quality, organization, and transparency with customers. I don't recommend this place and will choose new high quality restaurants next time.

I don’t know how it’s possible this hotel has five stars, everything is completely outdated, shabby and run down. The rooms may be large, but they are lifeless, lack modern amenities and could be compared to staying in your grandmothers house. The breakfast and dinner was very mediocre, we couldn’t even get a cup of fresh coffee or tea - it was all pre-made in thermos’s outside. We didn’t have the correct rooms available when we arrived and the staff did little to amend the issue. I felt babied by the staff at breakfast, as if unable to fetch my own plate. The outside area is the best aspect of the hotel, everything else was sadly very disappointing.

The place is absolutely beautiful and elegant. Everything about it feels refined, and the experience from start to finish was genuinely enjoyable. I highly recommend anyone to visit because it truly deserves it. I just want to point out that the prices are a bit high, but considering the quality and the overall atmosphere, it’s definitely worth it. A place I would gladly visit again.

Absolutely beautiful. Staff is super nice and respectful. Bathroom is clean, perfect for taking photos. Food is 10/10!! Loved their salmon ravioli pasta and their mojito.

An incredible lunch experience! Every dish was extremely delicious, and the fresh mango juice was so refreshing. The service was attentive and welcoming, which made the meal even better. The hotel itself is cozy and beautifully designed, adding a special and unique charm to the restaurant’s atmosphere. A wonderful spot I would definitely recommend!

Beautiful, serene and authentic place. Very friendly, pleasant and helpful staff. Excellent food. A small nice pool in a pleasant garden (that gets overtaken by restaurant guests). Lovely cats, and some dog noise at night. Location OK (close to metro and shops) though the neighborhood is cosmopolitan upper class and lacks authentic Egyptian food (lots of other food though). A very nice place to stay.

The place doesn't need further reviews as everything is really nice and the vibes are outstanding as always. It is a piece from the good times. The thing I will keep on mentioning all the time is people attitude; as much as the time pass and as high as the reputation of the place goes, people are still extremely nice and friendly; everybody smiles once they see u and everybody is always ready to help. I love the staff as much as I love the place.
