4 Best Day Trips from Rome

"The archeological ruins of the Villa of Tiberius, the Roman emperor who ruled from 17 to 42 CE, were long rumored to lie somewhere between Rome and Naples. Finally discovered in 1957, they testify to this importance of this whitewashed seaside town that's been all but forgotten since its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s. Legend has it, Sperlonga was a stop on Odysseus's journey, and a group of ancient sculptures depicting scenes from the Odyssey were found in the grotto adjacent to the villa. Anyone can wander the ruins of the villa, but you have to pay a 5 Euro admission fee to enter the museum where the statues are now kept." - Laura Itzkowitz, Arlene Gibbs

As a tourist guide if Italy, I would love to give 5 stars to all Historical places and museums, but maybe it helps for some improvements. The museum and archaeological area is a must to do in that area for all art and history lovers tourists. It's a small but precious jewel of Roman art and history. The museum is nice, perfectly designed and Reconstructions of statues help visitors to understand better. The panel inside of museums are good. Now I tell why I give 4 stars! The open air area and ruins are completely without observations and not any staffs there to help or even look for any vandalism act. The panels of information are so old and some are not possible to read at all. The way of visit is not clear. I would like to thanks museum staffs, they are so helpful and kind. Highly appreciated

Very particular place! We visited first villa and then the museum. At the entrance they give you the prospect so you can understand how villa was used back in time. In the museum there is also short movie (in Italian) about how they discovered villa. Highly recommend to visit if you are passing by Sperlonga. There is a parking lot before the entrance to the museum, but it is not well marked.

Approaching this from the beach side only to be greeted by a fence and then followed by the realization that you have to walk up to the museum and pay 7€ to get in, I am not going to lie, at first, I was a bit hesitant about spending that money. But it is totally worth it! The museum is actually really interesting and inviting, they have some really cool stuff on display - and once you are done, you get to go outside and see the landmarks and the cave, get to walk around and on a good day get a great photo opp from inside the cave, with the water reflecting the city on the hill in the background. My recommendation, however, is to go when it is not as busy - we went on a fairly overcast day off season, but I'm pretty sure that on a nice sunny day, when Sperlonga is filled with tourists, that this place can be quite crowded. In case you do forget to bring refreshments, there is a small vending machine near the entrance that sells water for 0.60€ a bottle, but good luck getting your change - just bring your own supplies and you will be golden.

The museum is good and well-curated. The remains of the villa are well preserved, but the archaeological site lacks information panels. The staff tries to compensate for this but hopefully they receive funding to make improvements.

A must-see in this area! The villa grounds are very well maintained and the Grotto looks absolutely fabulous. The museum offers interesting explanations about the historical importance of the area, as well as majestic archeological findings. Convenient free parking right across the street. Attention: The museum only accepts cash payments!

This a must see if you love archeology. Displays inside were wonderful, but the outside area was amazing. The grotto is beautiful.

Worth a stop. You can explore the villa of Rome’s second Emperor, the museum is small but well curated, and when you’re done, the beach nearby is lovely for a swim.
