Yelp
(Dined/Took Out 10/24/2023 TU @ 12:00pm): This villa provided a touch of Argentina and Italy!
I initially came across Villa Roma when I picked up food from them for the 2023 Newport Beach Film Festival. I loved Italian food, and I always felt Argentinian cuisine was very similar (with the exception of the emphasis on beef). Was my first tasting a primer of more good eats to come as I roamed toward this villa in South Orange County!?
PURCHASE
Quilmes Lager Beer 11.5floz Bottle ($5.99): Golden amber color, malty sweet aroma, low body, light malty sweet flavor, effervescent finish, and light malty sweet aftertaste - salud! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=CUVYYIl3jWtKA1qNnm1e5g&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Calamari Fritti Appetizer ($16.95): Plenty of lightly battered fried plump tender squid rings (I loved the tentacles!) served with homemade marinara dipping sauce, this was a fully satisfying meal on its own! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=e4KwWQXWyDkteBgpfoRVnA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Choripan Sandwich + Garlic Fries ($14.95 + $3.00): Homemade Argentine chorizo sausage on a crispy baguette-style bread served with chimichurri on the side, this was a plain sandwich that needed some vegetable representation although that wasn't the norm. The meat was slightly spicy but a tad dry, the bread flaky, and the chimichurri simply divine! The side of garlic fries was plentiful as each thin potato spear burst with garlicky goodness. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=iW1_3fPrRCGvzuLBue_DoQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
12" Chimi Pizza ($17.95): Made with a ton of mozzarella cheese, diced seasoned skirt steak, and homemade chimichurri sauce all on a somewhat thick fluffy oily crust, this was an enjoyable albeit simple pizza. I only wished there was more skirt steak throughout. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=lxJgp1Uy3JnTRgmL0J61Gg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Beef Empanada ($1.50): A ton of seasoned minced beef packed into a thick bready casing the size of your palm, I could still taste it on my lips! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=CGChGiwcgAVDAaofI9fXtg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Chicken Empanada ($1.50 x2): Spicy minced meat with bits of peppers, another wonderful meat pastry! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=m5U7cczYzgOVZpohXRiMeQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Ham & Cheese Empanada ($1.50): This would've been a great breakfast option on the go! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=cC1yclS7sfRvCcGSLqEx-g&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Spinach Empanada ($1.50 x2): My favorite of the bunch, this was all spinach and nothing else! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=C30SuaEyhn-TFxKVGPe_Wg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Quilmes Lager Beer 11.5floz Bottle 6pk ($14.95): I had to bring back some for later consumption! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=6j1cjnxo9FqnPdB7ZGupiQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
SERVICE
I was warmly greeted by possibly the owner, Teresa. I sat myself at a table, read the menu, and minutes later a friendly young gentleman took my order. My beer came out quickly along with a basket of bread. My food then came out in timely ten minute intervals. Halfway through my sandwich, I placed my pizza and empanadas takeout order. Soon enough, my empties were cleared away and my to-go food was ready. It was a really pleasant extended lunch - thank you!
PARKING (FREE)
Located within the La Paz Village outdoor shopping center, there were plenty of spots throughout; no need to look elsewhere - "nuff said.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
A spacious deli/market/restaurant combo, the market consisted of several food aisles and refrigerated coolers, the deli was your basic counter display, and the restaurant was filled with many communal tables. There were minimal decorations on the wall (mainly Argentinian flags). Also, I believed there was an actual restaurant space next door although it appeared to be closed. Plenty of natural lighting came in through the large windows and doorway while soul-sucking fluorescent ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were several TVs throughout but couldn't recall if there was any background music.
ATTIRE
Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops.
OVERALL
Villa Roma was a pleasant time, and I would definitely consider another visit if I were in the area. The food was lovely, the prices were comparable, and the service was friendly and straightforward. The menu was varied enough, the deli section looked fabulous, and they had daily food specials such as Tuesday $1.50 empanadas (regularly $2.50), Wednesday BOGO pizzas, and more. Plus, I always enjoyed supporting mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $89.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS
