I would describe Shemsmoon as the ‘Villa of Highs and Lows.’ Burrowed in the foothills of Atlas Mountains, we revelled in its stunning views day and night. We basked in the beautiful warm nights on the terraces embracing each other’s pleasant conversation. I particularly grew accustomed to the traditional Bedouin tent situated at the foot of the compound where we could observe the entire Villa, hide from the baking sun during the daytime and home to many engaging gatherings. The authentic and spacious Moroccan rooms were a delight, albeit some without a shower curtain like Vahida mentioned repeatedly and others a dangerous shower hose with a mind of its own! Unfortunately, with the highs followed the lows and although prewarned the villa lost power several times during our short stay. As well as losing electricity intermittently causing the vital air conditioning to be non-functional in the baking heat the villa lost water twice for several hours. We knowingly chose to holiday at the hottest time of the year, but it was almost punishing trying to sleep at night without air conditioning or lights. Twice the water cut off for several hours therefore we could not wash or shower hampering us from utilizing the Villa facilities and dampening the overall mood. The biggest disappointment and irritation were undoubtedly the constant harassing for money (I don’t use the word harassing lightly) by either the manager on behalf of the owner or the owner himself. Usually bills and addons get settled at the end of the trip, however this was a daily chore and with such a large group time consuming to allocate charges. It felt laborious and irksome with the endless invoices and constant demands. I would recommend Mr. Rashid (owner) settle the charges at the end of the stay so the holidaymakers can focus on their holiday and not get bogged down on the daily mondain tasks and worries of paying bills and accounting, something we wanted to leave behind at home and not think about! We had some minor teething problems at the start with quantity of food and portions sizes which led to the manager being labelled ‘Ration Rashid’ and the saga of the missing buns which will remain a mystery for all time. The manager and kitchen staff were welcoming and friendly and fulfilled most of our requests. The manager Rashid always had a smile even at the most difficult times. He took the brunt of the complaints but still always tried his utmost to ensure we had a smooth, carefree, and pleasurable holiday.
Perhaps we are spoilt with our habitual customary luxuries and amenities associated with our typical 5-star hotels and resorts and many of us subconsciously had unrealistic high expectations of what in truth was a Beautiful remote Villa in the middle of the Desert outside of Marrakech.
Overall, a great villa with great views and great service needing some renovation and better administration.
