Beloved Bread Purveyor Village Baking Company Arrives in the Knox District - Eater Dallas

"Village Baking Co., the artisan bread destination that supplies baked goods to some of Dallas’s favorite restaurants, has opened another boulangerie in the Knox District. The restaurant, at 4539 Travis Street, opened on Wednesday, January 13. The shop is the work of bakers Clint and Kim Cooper, who first started baking from their home in 2004. After Clint traveled to San Francisco and France to study Old World baking techniques, he and his wife founded the business in 2012 with a wholesale bakery and boulangerie in University Park. That storefront later moved to the Design District, and a second location was added on Lower Greenville in 2015, making the Knox District location the third. The bakery is known for using flours made with high-quality Texas wheat, and the restaurant’s menu includes classic French breakfast bites like pain au chocolat, croque monsuiers, quiches and coffee, alongside kouign-amann pastries, duck confit sandwiches and macarons. The new restaurant also features an extended patio for open-air dining, as well as takeout and delivery through Uber Eats and Grubhub." - Brittanie Shey

The food and various baked items are consistently fresh and delicious. They are a genuine boulangerie. The service is efficient and engaging. The aesthetic of the place feels like a French bakery/pastry shop. But the interior dining space is cramped, feels cluttered, and some of the tabletops are loose and janky. Combine that with round tables that are too small if you have a few items and your overall experience goes from great to good.

Google
Love this bakery! Alot of nice fresh options with great coffee. Also location is great. Would recommend a quick bite then a nice walk around!

Google
The egg croissant sandwich was underwhelming—definitely not worth the price. It didn’t look like what was advertised and wasn’t nearly as appealing as the other sandwiches on display. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Google
Absolute #1 favorite boulangerie in DFW! Worth commuting 1.5 hours for. Couldn’t recommend this place more.

Google
Had the pleasure of stopping in the area early on a Saturday morning for coffee and a few goodies. Everything tasted delicious. I would recommend the bacon and cheese croissant and the almond croissant! We had a great guest experience that felt relaxed. I will definitely be back!

Google
Overall, a great bakery with a wide array of pastries and coffee. I have enjoyed the chocolate croissant, ham croissant, and spinach and feta croissant. I also got an iced latte here and it was very well made. Like most bakeries, it is generally fresher in the morning. I will for sure return here.

Google
I’ve been wanting to try this spot out for some time & finally got the chance! I can’t tell you enough how pleased I am from the service to the food! Each associate said hello & made you feel so welcome! I picked out 3 random things because I could’ve have gotten everything but I had to have control ! I got regular croissant, bacon & jalapeño croissant & the chocolate almond croissant! The regular one was so buttery, soft on the inside & crispy flaky on the outside! The bacon jalapeño was #1 for me! It was Smokey, cheesy with just a kick of heat from the jalapeño! The chocolate almond was good but my #3, I have forgotten I’m not the biggest fan of almond extract & it was stout! However, if you are an almandine fan, this you’ll love, no joke !! Chefs kiss for everything, I’ll recommend this spot to everyone with no regret!!

Google
Village Baking Co is a true gem! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Amaia and Jeremy, who made excellent recommendations. I highly recommend trying the Pain au Jambon—it's simply delightful! If you're seeking delicious baked goods and friendly service, this is the place to be! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Very cute ambiance! The pastries are good. NOT the place to go for coffee. They serve an 8oz macchiato...? The cappuccino is 12oz and the espresso drinks always taste kinda watery. The last few times I ordered coffee it was like-warm. Overall I love this place because it's very cute and the staff is always friendly, I just don't recommend for coffee.

Yelp
MOLD IN CAKE POP. I purchased a special, themed Valentine's Day Cake Pop this morning (Friday, February 14, 2025) as a gift for my valentine. After she bit into it, WE FOUND LARGE SPOTS OF MOLD ALL AROUND THE CAKE WITHIN THE ICING. We are both disgusted and upset; this mold also ruined a great Valentine's Day gift (and it was like $5 which is like so much for a cake pop anyways). I have spent a lot of money at this (overpriced) bakery over the last few years, and this is just no way to repay a loyal customer.

Yelp
I do want to try it all. I am so close! A new item for me is the zucchini pecan muffin. A few bites in and the sugar hit me. Too sweet for me. Pity I cannot finish the $5+ item. I tried the chocolate cake. Cake was tasty and moist. Frosting was not overly sweet. Generous amount of frosting! Of the two employees I interacted with, both had smiles and were friendly!

Yelp
Hmm not the same as several years ago . I've already left a review about the way they changed up the croissants. ( went from the absolute best in Dallas. Buttery dense and chewy to over-proofed lightweight and run of the mill) but I kept coming back for the other pastries This morning I got two laminated brioche two kouign amanns a baguette and a jamón beurre. The sandwich was stale and tough to eat. And not on a baguette but some very thick sub roll. The kouign amanns were squished flat about 1/2 the height as usual and no clue what happened to the laminated brioche. Puffed up and tasted rubbery. Maybe bc it's New Year's Eve?? Have not tried the kouign amanns but hopefully they are delicious as always (even if condensed and flat). Curious about what is going on. Did they get sold to a corporate owner. Fyi still wonderful tasting baguettes. In the past I have not minded paying their prices but my last couple of trips has me rethink whether to make a special trip. They get 3 stars for having a nice selection of pastries. BUT down from 5++ stars years ago before they expanded. ps my wife ate one of the laminated brioche pastries and pronounced it as good as ever so perhaps i was unfairly put off by the visual gaps. Also I tried the Kouign Amann and it was delicious as usual, even if a bit dense. This pastry (and the baguettes) are the reason I'll continue to stop by when I'm in the knox street area. so back to a four star. I must have been in a grumpy mood :)

Yelp
The comforting aroma of fresh breads and pastries mixed with the smell of freshly brewed coffee is what welcomes you as you enter. I knew everything was going to be delicious by the smell of things. I had a couple of hours to blow before an appointment so this was my first stop. I had a vanilla latte and a maple pecan loaf. The loaf was perfect....not really sweet, really light and the pecans! I bought a croissant and a kouign Amman to share and the consumers were blown away by the taste. Next time I'm in Dallas, I will make this place my first stop again. The food was fantastic, the service was awesome and the parking was free!

Yelp
We stopped by on a Sunday morning to get some pastries with friends. There was no line when we came in and the girls working were very sweet to us. The vibe is like a French bakery and the decor is beautiful. I loved every detail. I ordered the raspberry Kouign Amman and my boyfriend got the chocolate almond croissant. They offered to warm up our pasties so we got them warm. I was impressed by the quality of my kouign amman, it was so delicious and soft on the inside while the outside was chewy and crispy.

Yelp
Not very familiar with this area but it's located among many other shops on the street. Parking is available in the front but limited. Might suggest the nearby garage but gotta walk a bit. Cute little bakery offering many French style baking such as croissants and baguettes, but also sandwiches and pastries. Unfortunately, we arrived a tad late in the day which left us limited in choices. But it's okay! Still picked the last almond chocolate croissant and a croissant. Staff friendly and offered us to heat both up. And that's my preference in tasting them. Accompanied with a cold Mexican coke, that helped so much in cooling down from the outside 100° ! I ordered the chocolate croissant because chocolate. Found the croissant a bit on the denser side. Inside is cute and bathroom (1 only) is at the back of the place. Inside also offered a couple of small tables to enjoy, otherwise there is a few seatings outside as well. Easy spot to stay and enjoy some French style bakeries!

Yelp
07/05/2024 Friday 9:25am. Think this is their newest location. The staff is super helpful and friendly. It was nice to sit outside and it was a fairly quiet street. The pastries themselves were not as good as the other locations. Kind of bummed about that. It was a better location as it wasn't far off the freeway. I will give them another try soon.

Yelp
Came to this location on a Saturday morning and it was crazy busy understandably. There were no free seats indoor or outdoor so my wife and I got our order to go. We got the bacon cheddar Jalapeño croissant, ham and cheese croissant, chocolate croissant, and one other Blueberry pastry. The croissants were amazing!! So airy and flakey and had a great flavor with the fillings. The chocolate croissant was perfectly sweet, and the bacon cheddar Jalapeño croissant was nicely savory. I feel like I could eat 10 in a sitting.

Yelp
Village has dropped in quality over the past 3 years. Once, a real artisanal bakery has become kind of a "corporate" mass baker that is mailing it in on both quality and especially service. Stale, cold baked goods served first thing in morning coupled with obnoxious, disinterested service is now the experience at Village. Dried out croissants, crumbling, barely edible muffins and uninspired(stale too) Paris ham sandwich are now sadly expected at Village. Overpriced and a big disappointment.
google avatar

Leena J.

Yelp
Ahhhhhhh the smells and the views- beauty in this bakery, pure bliss. Lovely little spot for all The delicious treats. They have great seating indoor and outdoors- clean bathrooms and sweet and friendly faces.

Yelp
Always a must visit or 2 while in Dallas for French bread, pastries, and cafe! The kouign amann is my favorite, vanilla to be exact! Love this new larger space with seating inside or outside. (although still limited) Parking is a challenge, there is a garage near Sur la Table or on the side streets. Awesome, reasonably priced, fresh, enjoy!

Yelp
I was walking on the street and was "starving." Happened to stumble upon this place. Warm, small, bustling European coffee/pastry shop vibe. They had scones and croissants, quiche, tarts, etc. I was feeling a croissant. Went with the ham and cheese one. This croissant was not what I was expecting in an unfortunate way. It tasted like butter with a side of croissant. It felt heavy in my stomach, not many layers ham was not spread throughout just plopped in the center. Will have to go back and try one of there other ones and a coffee, but for now giving it 2 out of 5, one for the vibe and two for the potential it can have. I'll be back.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE! I mostly go to the on Knox. I love getting a lavender latte with honey and oatmilk. I've tried various pasties like the pretzel croissant and the fruit tart etc and all very good! It's such a cute spot, definitely gets busy earlier in the day. A great place to sit and catch up. Everyone is also super friendly. Highly recommend
google avatar

Daryl K.

Yelp
Another great little coffee/breakfast place. The place was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. PLENTY of pastries and stuff to choose from. The people working were super friendly and patient while trying to decide what delicious things I wanted to try. I ended up with a bacon and cheddar croissant and a fruit tart, and both were very good! Cute area inside to sit and enjoy and even a small outside area with some tables and chairs. The area around is also a great area to walk around and check out the local shops. Definitely recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
Lovely coffee and pastries. The staff is so friendly I wish I had taken photos but hey, that just gives me a reason to go back
google avatar

Yelp
#healthcodeviolation #dallascodeenforcement Paris Hilton wannabe's won't figure out a way to leave their dogs outside the restaurant. Service animals are Ok! But this one is not. This is an unruly attention getting accessory. While I was late with the camera, I witnessed the dog trying to get over the counter. Love their food, love their coffee... Without dog hair in it, or the possibility of being bitten Yes, they have two 4"x4" signs with 18pt fonts advising the dogs should be monitored... didn't see the signs until I exited the store and looked for them prior to posting this entry

Yelp
I am not a Dallas local or else I'd be in trouble. The pastries are amazing here! Definitely get anything that has the word croissants in it. I think my favorite is the almond croissants! Flaky, buttery and delicious! We were picking up for a group of friends, so I was lucky enough to try a bite of many things because they are all huge portions. The line was out the door when we came in on a recent Saturday morning, but it moves fairly quick. They also offer the option to heat up your pastries, but it takes up to 15-20 minutes if they are busy. Workers are friendly and the coffee is great. They are also pet friendly so that's a big yes in my books.
google avatar

James Z.

Yelp
Bakery with tons of pastries and breads. They offer the option to heat them up which is nice. The pastries are bigger than you think and will fill you up. A great place in a cool neighborhood to chill for a moment.
google avatar

Sarrang P.

Yelp
There are multiple locations and it was my first time visiting this location when I decided to come here this time visiting dallas. I came probably around 11 or 1130 and there were still a good selection of pastries left! I love love their Crossiants and highly suggest trying those if you come here. The ham and cheese Crossiant and chocolate crossiants are my favorite. Super flaky, buttery, savory, sweet, big and delicious. Their baguette breads and loafs are also really good here and if I lived closer I would probably come more often and grab one to make sandwiches or toast in the morning at home.
google avatar

Ed T.

Yelp
Awesome bakery Wide selection of goodies I love that many of the items (e.g. croissants) are gigantic Unique pretzel croissant is super yummy (extra salty too, which I love) Pastrami pretzel croissant sandwich is bomb - very filling and really delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful cafe with crispy, delicious and tasty pastries/ desserts. Friendly service as well! Would be a great place to sit and read over a coffee or catch up with a friend as the ambience is cozy and friendly.

Yelp
It's so wonderful to have this Boulangerie by Village Baking Co. here in Knox District now. Easy to find parking on weekdays and convenient it is to walk, run, bike, or jog over to from Katy Trail. Amazing in taste are some of my favorites, freshly baked Caneles, Kougin Amann, Croissants, Scones, and Brioches. Also fabulous are their sandwiches and artisan loaves of flavorful breads. With the cheerful service, whether it is for a quick takeout or for a lingering stay at their charming dining in cafe and patio area - alone or with a friend - lovely is the time spent here on every visit. CHEERS!

Yelp
The address must have not be updated? The gps told me it was located in a construction area so I assumed they moved. I called. The lady said it was located near pottery barn. I went into the parking and circle around, couldn't find it. I did ask her for more landmarks but she was talking to another customer at the same time. Couldn't find it after multiple tries so I took it as a sign I shouldn't try this place

Anastasia V.

Yelp
i love village baking co but the staff at this specific location are ALWAYS so rude & have an attitude. i will drive the extra 10 minutes just so i don't have to deal with these workers. i really did try to give them the benefit of the doubt and hoped it was just a bad day but no. the attitude has happened every. single. time. i walk in so i just stopped going.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Easy to park here but difficult to figure out what pastries to buy! There are so may yummy looking options that I'll need to make a couple visits to try everything want. I loved the croque monsieur as well as the chocolate eclair and veggie/mushroom quiche. I'll be back next time for the kouign amann and some coffee!

K T.

Yelp
Girl at counter was horrid. Horrible, rude, attitude, pretty much threw the pastries in the bag, and then got the pastry and number of each wrong, when I corrected her politely, her attitude got even worse like I was the one who couldnt do my job....
google avatar

P N.

Yelp
The 1 croissant that was fully baked and hit the spot for our croissant craving. But we were very disappointed with the other 2 croissants. The fruit tart and the raspberry Kouign Amman were delicious!!! The vanilla eclair was on the dry side even though flavorful. Very friendly staff even though there was a line! We will try again next time.
google avatar

Mykie D.

Yelp
Excellent croissant options. Great location and amazing customer service. Highly recommend the almond croissant
google avatar

Jasmin R.

Yelp
Beautiful shop and desserts. Service people are very friendly and kind. Every pastry I had was amazing. My friend got a hot tea and they had an espresso machine so I got a latte. They were both great. They warm up your pastry if you want to eat it there.

Michelle B.

Yelp
The chicken salad sandwich is amazing! It is my favorite sandwich in Dallas! It never disappoints me and is always consistently fresh.
google avatar

Chikako S.

Yelp
They moved to the new building which is across from the original store. Store entrance is facing to Knox Street and there's few parking spots along the street.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place with all the great reviews, but it was a little bit disappointing. I ordered the pain au chocolat, and it was mid and didn't taste fresh. They heated it up for me and was a weird temperature and texture. The iced latte was pretty good though. The atmosphere is definitely nice and cute.
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
LOVE this sweet little slice of Paris in Dallas! Everything is killer. I especially love their chocolate croissant loaf, it's like a chocolate croissant but it's a loaf and if you get an end piece it's super flakey, buttery and theres a little bit of a crunch I also love their sourdough bread and their Meyer lemon rosemary bread, I'm not a huge fan of the jalapeño and cheddar- it lacks flavor in my opinion. They have a jambon cru sandwich wich has ham cheese and butter on a baguette- so French and delicious. The have a tasty quiche Lorraine plus coffee! Great quality here!! I even asked once for their multigrain loaf and they honestly told me it wasn't a great batch so I bought the sourdough instead and they gave me their "botched"multigrain for free. My favorite spot in Dallas hands down
google avatar

Elena S.

Yelp
I love coming across new bakeries to try! I will definitely be coming back to The Village Baking. They offer everything whether you are looking for savory or sweet. It is hard to make a decision but I am sure it is all good. I tried the chocolate mousse cake and it was absolutely delicious! All of the employees were so sweet and friendly!
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
I am a VBC diehard, but they've officially won my undying love by moving to this easier-to-stop spot. Right off the highway, same great Village pastries you know and love. Haven't tried them yet? Youre in for a treat! My favorite tactic is to 'just stop for lunch' to grab a fresh sandwich and a bag of chips. Then meal plan while im there by grabbing kougin aman for breakfast, a fresh loaf of crusty bread to go with dinner, and a few bags of lavash for snacks. If you're feeling decadent, the chocolate truffle cake is otherworldly.
google avatar

Patrick A.

Yelp
My absolute favorite bakery in Dallas. This has become a staple in the weekend mornings of many uptown-area residents. Their plain croissants are "as good as the ones in France" according to my parents who lived in France for years. Their almond and chocolate-almond croissants are also delicious, as is their croissant loaf. The staff is always very friendly, the bakery is clean, and the outdoor patio is cute as well. Does get very busy on the weekends but this is expected for a bakery this good.
google avatar

Nina K.

Yelp
I love this place! It's so nice to get pastries and then go walk on Katy trail or afterwards. A great spot to meet friends. They are fast and so sweet here! They changed locations just fyi, same area but in the shopping center across Starbucks area. I love their croissants and coffee. 10/10!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Nice place to grab some breakfast pastries and coffee. I've had a few of their croissants, but prefer the croque monsieur.
google avatar

Cara W.

Yelp
Have been here a few times and have not been disappointed once. I got a chocolate-almond croissant twice, and it was divine. Definitely would recommend asking them to warm it up though, because they do not always offer. I also have gotten an oat milk latte from them a few times and it is well prepared and quick. I have tried their jambon beuvre and their spinach feta croissant, both of which were fantastic savory options. Would definitely put it on your list of go-tos when you are in the Knox-Henderson area.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
The coffee is terrible. I can't stop here for a pastry if the beverage is going to be abysmal. The store is bland and poorly designed :-(. No coffee menus. No seasonal beverages. No good system. Very amateur in operation. I guess if you wanna stop by and pick up some croissants to take home it's OK. But don't expect to want to be here for any length of time and sit and enjoy yourself. No thanks.
google avatar

Lu L.

Yelp
This is the best French bakery in Dallas!!! For breakfast, Almond Croissant! For lunch, Quiche Lorraine! For dessert, Financier!
google avatar

Diana K.

Yelp
I was really excited about trying this place because of its location. Service was friendly. Store itself was cute, but not super unique or memorable. On display, only the croissants caught my eye. Everything else didn't look super appetitzing. So, I Ordered two chocolate croissants and a ham and cheese croissant. The bag holding them was completely lucid on one side because of all the butter or oil that it soaked up. The chocolate croissants themselve did not have an even distribution of chocolate inside. It was literally just a solid stick of chocolate inside a croissant. Disappointed. Not sure I'll be back.

Erika S.

Yelp
This is my favorite bakery in the city. The line is always out the door and the ingredients are quality. No one makes a croissant like Village Baking. NO ONE. Want the flake? Got it. Want the taste? Got it. Want the freshness? Got. It.
google avatar

Polly R.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for something simple and delicious, look no further! This bakery has all the staples--croissants, muffins, sandwiches, and coffee and tea--along with some tasty looking desserts. I only tried the ham and cheese sandwich, but it was good enough to come back for. The ingredients were clearly quality. The sandwich was over $10 which seemed a little pricey for Dallas, but that's my only complaint!
google avatar

Tracy M.

Yelp
I have been on a quest to find the best kouign amann ever since I tried one here in Houston. I thought I had found the best in downtown San Antonio but this place unseated the SA bakery in a huge way. I have only had the regular, unflavored pastry but the Village has three flavors -- regular, seasonal fruit and chocolate. Oh. My. Goodness. While they were smaller than the ones I get in Houston, they were so much more delicious. I'm used to a very soft pastry and while this was still soft in the middle, the crunch they get on the outside was amazing. And it's not an overcooked crunch, it's a caramel sugary crunch. I'm glad I found it but now I have to plan road trips to Dallas to get it again.
google avatar

Deborah G.

Yelp
Love this place but quiche was cold after two requests to heat and almond croissant was hard as a rock stale!
google avatar

Natalie L.

Yelp
I'll take one of everything! Delicious pastries and hubby enjoyed the coffee. Friendly and attentive employees, even as closing time was near.
