The Best Vegan Pizza In NYC

"With its exposed brick and “Get Lost In The Sauce” neon signs, Village Square Pizza is a very chill place to eat a slice of pizza in the West Village (there’s also a second location on Avenue A). The menu, which includes pizza by the slice/square or whole pies, is pretty straightforward, but we’d like to focus on one of our favorite pizza-like things here: the vegan bruschetta. It’s topped with freshly chopped tomatoes and red onions drenched in extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil while sitting on a golden garlic crust. But if you must have pizza, which is also very good, you can select between a few plant-based options: the vegan square is topped with roasted peppers and onions, and the eggplant square features fried eggplant, marinara sauce, hand-crushed tomatoes, chopped garlic, and fresh basil." - anna rahmanan

25 Best Places for Pizza in New York City | Condé Nast Traveler

"Slices at Village Square Pizza in the East Village check every box: savory, at times spicy, crispy, and simply delicious. Meat lovers should try the pepperoni square: VSP uses cup-and-char pepperoni, which collect little pools of greasy flavor. The white pizza square is loaded with fresh mozzarella and ricotta, perfect when paired with their homemade vodka sauce. Exposed brick and neon signs inside stating “get lost in the sauce” and “pizza is life” cast a warm glow among the few bar seats inside." - Andrea Whittle, Jessica Kelly

Our final stop on our West Village pizza tour was The Village Square Pizza, and it was such a sweet way to end the day! Their pizzas are fluffy yet still have a nice crunch, and the toppings are super creative. My absolute favorite was the white pizza—it honestly tasted like eating a sweet cloud. I’m pretty sure they mix ricotta with honey, and it’s magical. We also loved the roasted eggplant on marinara—so flavorful and comforting. The interior is cozy and feels like a charming little café. Seating is limited, so it’s more of a grab-and-go or quick-bite kind of place, but it’s worth the stop. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for something a little different but still delicious on your NYC pizza adventure!

Google
Really lovely pizza spot that I would definitely come back to. I really enjoyed the slices, and I’m surprised there aren’t more people lining up. Perhaps it’s because they are very close to L’Industrie, but I think this place is not too far off in terms of quality. I enjoyed the classic slice and the pepperoni Sicilian pie equally. My partner got the buffalo chicken, which I liked more than I thought I would. They have some really interesting flavours, though, and I would love to come back and try more. Solid pizza with very little wait—I dig it!

So the owner of this place brought some pizza out on a sailing tour of the NY harbor and I was able to take some home after the tour. 24 hours later, I popped it in the oven and holy cow. Amazing slices. The marg was perfectly thin and the fresh mozzarella was perfect balanced with the sauce. The grandma slice is on another level. The pesto has such a healthy amount of garlic in it but in no way is it overwhelming. Great pizza cant wait to have it fresh out of the oven 😂

Google
I came here after reading all the great reviews — especially about the pepperoni and vodka pizza. So of course, I had to try both. They’ve got a $10 minimum for credit cards, so I grabbed two slices. The woman asked if I wanted hot honey. I said sure, on both — but didn’t realize they charge $1.50 per sauce (and it’s just a tiny plastic container, not even drizzled on). Bit sneaky, especially since there’s no heads-up. Pepperoni slice was solid — crispy edges, good flavor. Vodka pizza had this creamy white cheese on top, which was tasty, but the slice itself felt undercooked and floppy. The dough wasn’t quite there. So overall: • Pepperoni: good • Vodka slice: meh • Surprise honey tax: not cute 3 out of 5. Would I come back? Not really ….

Google
Village Square Pizza in the West Village is an absolute gem! The slices here are truly unique, standing out from the usual New York pizza spots with their incredible flavor and top-notch ingredients. Every bite is bursting with quality, and you can tell a lot of care goes into each slice. It's underrated compared to the more well-known spots, but that's what makes it even better. If you're looking for a delicious and distinctive pizza experience, this is the place to go. 5/5. Also, open late!

Google
This review focuses on a specific issue with the delivery, rather than the business as a whole. However, since the delivery process is part of the overall service, it’s worth mentioning. We ordered from here for the first time last night and were excited to try it. Unfortunately, the pizza arrived in poor condition. It appeared to have been mishandled during delivery, leaving the cheese scattered across the box and the dough soggy. This made it impossible to enjoy. I also tried the ham and cheese calzone, which unfortunately lacked flavor. On a positive note, the garlic knots were excellent—fresh, flavorful, and thoroughly enjoyable. I hope this was an isolated incident, as I’d like to give this place another chance. A little extra care during delivery could make all the difference.

Google
better than the overhyped l’industrie - no 2 hour long line, staff was nice, the chicken bacon ranch was 🔥

Google
I’m a big fan of Village Square Pizza. When my wife lived in the lower east side, I used to eat at that location every time I wanted pizza. Their pepperoni cup pizza is incredible and some of my favorite anywhere, especially with hot honey. But I found out yesterday how good their white slice is. Had it fresh out of the oven and MAN it’s good. If I’m ever in the mood for a second slice, this will now fight for that spot with vodka sauce. In short, eat pizza here, it’s so damn good, I love it!

Yelp
Love the food but a bit oily. The service? Haha!! The only reason I come here. The Spanish lady at the counter with glasses, whistle to call me when my order is ready. How rude!!
google avatar

Michele D.

Yelp
I came to try L'Industrie, but in my judgement the line was too long, and this is on a 'best of' list, so here we gooo.... I would get the pepperoni square here with one caveat. A good half of the pepperoni cups were not crisped. I don't expect pepperoni slices to be crisped, but I think it's valid to expect that of pepperoni cups. It's the entire point, well done at the edge making a tiny cup of oil. Cholesterol schmolesterol. Ask for it crispy, and hope it doesn't ruin the rest of the slice. Decent dough, nothing life changing. A solid slice sans pepperoni.
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
Stopped by this pizza shop after L'industrie Pizza decided they don't want to serve anyone after 10PM, which is not a smart business decision IMO. You do you. As you probably suspect from the name, they only serve square pizza. Not complaining as long as I get the corner slice. I got the Pepperoni and Sausage ($6.50) and Margherita ($4.50). Both are solid choices and I enjoyed both of them. They only have one set of condiment shakers, so if you can't find it, someone's hogging them at their table.
google avatar

Marian S.

Yelp
Delish!!! I went with a Marinara slice and it did not disappoint! I could eat one of these every day. The place down the street draws the long lines, but why wait when you can get equally good pizza for less and with no wait here?
google avatar

Jordan A.

Yelp
This place is great! My friends and I walked in here late night after a fun night at Rockbar for some late night food. If you're into grandma slices this is your place. We got the buffalo chicken, vodka, margarita, and pepperoni and all weee amazing. Vodka was probably the best with how rich and flavorful the sauce was. If you're in need of late night pizza in the west village this place is solid.

Yelp
We stopped by here for a quick, late lunch recently. Their Eggplant Square is one my daughter's favorites in the city so I wanted to give it a try. It is made with fresh mozzarella and fried eggplant with basil and a slightly sweet tomato sauce. It was absolutely delicious! If you are a fan of eggplant parmesan, you would like it, too. And it was very filling! My husband had a Pepperoni Square -- he knew he would like it because he had it at another of their locations. There was only one guy working behind the counter when we came by. He was very friendly and appreciative of the business. The pizza was ready fairly quickly. And while it's a small place, there are some counter seats available.
google avatar

Fern Gale E.

Yelp
The grandma pizza was excellent. Not only a thin crisp crust but the sauce and pesto were beautifully seasoned. It's small so do keep that in mind. I am sure they have been impacted by another shop further east on the same block. Give them a shot for quick service by a nice staff and excellent pizza.
google avatar

Apolonia E.

Yelp
The pizza here is fantastic! The flavors were rich and satisfying. I tried both the buffalo chicken and pepperoni pizzas. Each slice was generously sized, making it difficult to finish, but I couldn't resist sampling both. They did not disappoint in the slightest; the buffalo chicken had a perfect blend of spicy and tangy, while the pepperoni was classic and flavorful. Definitely worth trying if you're in the mood for some hearty, delicious pizza.

Yelp
Tucked away in an unassuming corner of the West Village is Village Square Pizza, where, accurate to its name, you can find these square slices of crispy goodness. We came here as a fairly large group on a Sunday evening, and were able to fit comfortably inside the walls that were adorned with glowing reviews from online journals. The pizza had a bready crust that was chewy but crispy on the outside for that satisfying crunch. We shared a number of different slices and my favorites were the vodka slice (creamy sauce that balanced well with tomato I assume?) and the white pizza slice. The latter had gobs of ricotta (I wished they could be spread a bit more evenly throughout) that melded so well with hot honey drizzled over it. All the pizzas were nostalgic for me in a way with a homey comfort that money can't buy! The staff was friendly and provided good service. Visiting from out of state, I honestly felt this pizza wasn't what I imagined in terms of the kind of pizza New York is known for. However, it was a flavorful journey nonetheless and worth the try! (Don't forget to ask for the hot honey!)

Yelp
I love the unique, thick cut square slices here! They're filling and a perfect snack or quick lunch. Very simple store front with some outdoor seating - the staff are great here.

Jeremy A.

Yelp
I tried the pepperoni and a classic margarita. They both tasted good and the service was great.

Yelp
This was the best rectangular shaped (Sicilian style?) pizza by the slice I've ever had. It was fluffy on the inside, just the right amount of crisp along the outside edges, and boy was that pepperoni nice and crispy as well. Wow. I'm salivating just thinking about it..this place is worth walking the extra 6-8 minutes to come here instead of some random pizza by the slice that may not be as good. Just remember this is the rectangular style pizza, not your thin crust triangular shaped slice of New York pizza. I think this is way better. FYI: $10 minimum credit card charge, otherwise Cash or Venmo (no minimum).
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Great, quick service! The plain and vodka slice were both very good and crispy. It's a thick slice if that's not your vibe, and I thought the vodka slices could have used some more sauce but overall MUCH better than other pizzas around the block! Definitely coming back when I am in the area.
google avatar

Tansy W.

Yelp
Omg I am in love with this place. Some of the best I have ever had. The cup n char pepperoni is amazing and the pizza has a nice crisp to it. We got 2 slices of pepperoni for about $11-$12 and a bottle of cold water for $1. They take credit card but there's a $10 minimum. Cannot wait to come back here again!
google avatar

Andrea W.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday evening, and after asking for the most popular slices, I got a pepperoni slice and an upside down which is mozzarella with sauce on top. I was debating whether to get another one but decided I'll eat these ones first. I paid and then sat to wait for my slices; there's a $5 minimum on credit cards. The slices were quite delicious: thick and good amount of tons, but the flavor was a bit light. Not too oily which I appreciated, and I liked the crust a lot. Not too much space to sit as it's all counter space. Really friendly employees! [Sidenote: this is my 3400th review!]
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
My friends and I were mobbing deep for pizza. Its a very small spot with only two people working here. Each slice is about $5. I really liked their white pizza, but bring gum! It is garlicky.
google avatar

Ruwan J.

Yelp
Village Square Pizza serves a good slice when you need some carbs, sauce, and cheese. the regular cheese slice is a NYC-style: thin crust with some chew and crispness, layer of sauce, topped with a thin blanket of cheese. the sauce had flavor flavorful without being sweet or salty--just a subtle balance of both. the slice was served extra hot and it hit the spot. the interior looks new and is very clean--a few seats (no tables) inside and there is an outside shed in front. variety of slices and pies on display. service is friendly and quick. definitely a good option when you need a takeout slice or two or a minute to catch your breath and scarf some calories. nice casual slice option in the West Village.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
Stopped by here while exploring and we're glad we did! It's not your typical NY slice, it's thicker and square cut but still delicious. We had a large group of 8 and were all able to fit inside and find ourselves a corner to enjoy the food and each other's company. We tried the white, grandma, marinara, buffalo chicken, and vodka. We each had our own favorite so there's definitely something for everyone. I personally liked the grandma square the best. We also really liked the service, they were very friendly and patient with us. We all wanted to try a bit of everything and they gladly cut the squares into smaller pieces so we could share easily.
google avatar

Madeleine B.

Yelp
Awesome pizza, and a large variety of options to choose from (including a vegan option). I tried the upside down pizza and vodka slice. Since the slices are big, I thought maybe I was going to have leftovers, but I devoured both.
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
The pizza is delicious, and the service is fantastic! The person I spoke to was really nice, and the ambiance is great too. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem! We were turned away from another pizza place down the street because they had just closed (it was only 10pm!) and they weren't taking any more orders despite there being tons of people around. We walked on and found Village Square a few doors down and I'm glad that we did! The pizza was delicious. I paid about $12 ($10 minimum for cards) and got two square slices with toppings - about what I expected to pay. The eggplant pizza had a very flavorful tomato sauce and the eggplant was roasted perfectly with just the right amount of char and crispness. Sausage and peppers slice was flavorful and well seasoned. The crust was perfect, almost like focaccia. Not too thick or doughy, great flavor. Seating on stools in front of a ledge for maybe 10 people max. Good for a quick bite.

Yelp
You're out in the city on a busy Friday night and every restaurant you pass is packed to the gills. Weak from hunger, you gaze up and see the sign for Village Square Pizza shining like a beacon. You stumble inside and the scent of pizza overwhelms your weary soul. You can't really go wrong with any slice here, but the eggplant slice was the clear winner. It's the kind of slice that makes you feel like paying more than $1 for pizza is actually well worth it. Not much seating inside, but enough to take refuge long enough to enjoy your repast. Definitely worth a repeat visit. Be there or be...well, you know.

J F.

Yelp
Place is a rip off. I paid for my order, gave them a tip and then they screwed up my order. They said hey you are drunk (I got a plane classic slice lol) and was like I had a late night of work. Never saw a penny back - honestly go somewhere else there are 15 places in the area. Never been treated like that. There are so many better places. You can see I never leave bad reviews. This pace isn't good.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
It's a no brainer for a quick bite of what NY is about. Square slices, though not your typical NY slice you think of, but are starting to become a norm in this city. Still a fair representation of NY pizza if you ask me. Pizza in this city just hits different and definitely on a different playing field. VS is a sort of new comer to the pizza game and are doing it right. Of course everyone knows prince st. pizza and they'll always have a place in my heart, but VS is as good if you're going to compare apples to apples with the square pep slice. Less wait times along with some more modern takes like hot honey, Village Sq is an easy choice to satisfy that carby goodness we all crave. Stay fat mother sucker
google avatar

Vanessa P.

Yelp
We order in Pepperoni Square (Square) , Vod Square (Square)ka and White Square (Square) Absolutely delicious! We like the crust. It's a little thicker and crunchier than traditional New York pizza crust. Definitely recommend and will order again!
google avatar

P M.

Yelp
Variety of yummy flavors/ toppings with a unique twist on crust. Pizza was doughy, fluffy, and tasty. Hot honey made everything even better. White Pizza was my favorite!

Scott G.

Yelp
Shocked when I was asked if I had a different $5 bill because mine was old & discolored!! The cashier said owner gives her a hard time and not to blame her. She should be embarrassed!!
google avatar

Yelp
I had the pleasure of trying their pizza for the first time at a non-profit event and let me tell you, I LOVE their pizzas. I frequent this store whenever I'm in the area. Sometime I'll even make a pit stop here as I'm heading to Brooklyn. Must try - You have to have to get their grandma slice. This is my favorite! The crust is thin and has a great crisp. The sauce is sweet and works very well with the pesto. I usually get two slices of this. I couldn't find any pizza place that can beat their grandma slice. Trust me I have tried.... and failed miserably. Other delights - I have also tried their pepperoni, Buffalo chicken, volka, mushroom and white pizza. These slices are more Sicilian. Their dough is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The pepperoni is my second favorite. You should definitely get it with the Mike hot sauce (if you want a kick). This is probably one of the best pizza places in NYC. I'm sad I live in Queens and can't come here everyday.

Yelp
Oscar was so nice! He cut the heaters on for us. The pizza was INSANE!!!!' I highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Nychoopaholic B.

Yelp
I'm giving them 1 star after yesterdays experience. I showed up for a slice at 12:15pm on a Friday afternoon. The door was locked. The employee was making pizzas. I could see a bunch of pizzas made and fresh through the window. I motioned to the employee for the door and he gave me the "we're closed" hand gesture....at 12:15, lunch time. Ok...plenty of other places to get pizza in the village.
google avatar

Angelica C.

Yelp
My cousins and I went to try this pizza since we heard good reviews on the internet. So we went to try it out our selves. The service was great!! Pizza was also delicious An employee overheard us celebrating my birthday so he went above and beyond to add a special touch. If we ever come back to NY we will come back plus also recommend to anyone that comes to NY.
google avatar

Shannon T.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, even though we were waiting outside when the doors they opened, we were serious about hitting certain pizza places while visiting NY and this place was a great recommendation by @brettcconti, the hot honey was amazing and the pizza was even better. Add it to your list!
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
I used to walk from Chelsea to the East Village just for a slice - they make the crunchiest, greatest pizza in NYC. All the ingredients are so top-notch. This new location in the West Village is a DREAM come true. Tons of outdoor seating, too. Helloooo, our new weekend spot. You've gotta get the classic margherita slice, the pepperoni slice (add honey hot sauce), and the cheesy garlic knots. The vodka slice is also so rich and comforting. 5 stars!!!!!
google avatar

Kenneth P.

Yelp
I love this spacious pizza shop! It is easily in my top 10 favorite NYC pizza joints. My favorite has to be the square pepperoni with a drizzle of hot honey. I suggest you don't get the corner pieces so you can get less carbs and more pepperoni. There have been a few instances where I've travelled all the way from lower Brooklyn just for a slice of heaven. The staff here is very friendly, so make sure to ask for suggestions! If you can tolerate it, get that hot honey for an extra $1.50. The hot honey brings the flavor from wow to Oh My God!
google avatar

Tyler T.

Yelp
Finally a good Sicilian pizza place in the West Village! The place just recently had their soft opening so it isn't too crowded yet, but the pizza here is top notch. We tried three of the pizzas (the pepperoni, the white pizza and the vodka) as well as some garlic knots. The pepperoni was definitely the best, and tasted almost exactly like the one at Prince Street Pizza. It was crispy and amazing on the outside, while still having an amazing sauce and slightly chewier center. The white pizza and the vodka pizza were decent as well, but I think the purely tomato pizzas taste better. Garlic knots were a little cold and I wish they heated them up more, but the knots themselves were good with a nice amount of garlic. Overall solid choice, will be back!

Yelp
Amazing pizza.. we reach NY around late afternoon for our 3 day foodcation trip and we walked from our hotel striaght to village square puzza for late lunch as our first atop and it did not disappoint. We had pepperoni, reg, buffalo chicken, one with ricotta and pesto with some drinks.. peppo with hot honey was amazingly awesome and there is no such combo here in Boston and we absolutely loved it. The person working there was really awesome explaing which all slices were on the display and bought us the pizza after warming it up to the tables outside... Overalll great experience and as youtubers say it is a must place to visit..
google avatar

Alyssa R.

Yelp
BEST SLICE OF WHITE PIZZA EVERRRRR. Seriously though. Best damn slice of white pizza I've ever had. The thick crust is the perfect base for mozz cheese and that glorious glorious whipped ricotta. and the honey drizzle takes it all to another level of deliciousness. SO SO GOOD. Their Pepperoni Square slice is also ammmaaaazing. And totally comparable to another pizza shop a couple neighborhoods over. The sauce is sweet, the pepperoni a little spicy and together they just make another perfect slice. Staff has always been cool when I have stopped by for a slice (usually two). There are stools and a counter for indoor dining (when that's allowed again), a couple tables outside (al fresco!) and they accept cards after $10 (which is not hard to do...). Yuppp, totally obsessed w/ this spot.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Owners of this place are supportive of nonprofits! Had a chance to try their pizza at a nonprofit event and omg it was so good! Even overnight the pizza was so good, so I had to come support. This time I got the grandma slice and my friends got the pepperoni and margherita slice. My friend who got the margherita slice liked it so much she got another one! I highly recommend this place! It's probably one of the best pizzas out there in NYC
google avatar

Syd R.

Yelp
Stopped by for a few slices of pizza and they did not disappoint! My favorite was either the vodka slice or the white slice. But also the bruschetta slice was so good too. Too hard to decide. Love that they serve it with hot honey packets too. Service was really nice and the inside was super clean. There are some bar stools / bar tables and then a bar table along the front window. Perfect for people watching the streets. They also have a nice outdoor setup as well with a few tables. Will def be back whether it's here or their east village location - and they are opened late night !!
google avatar

Franny S.

Yelp
This place is kinda a hidden gem. It's not as crowded as the other pizza places in NY and the service is a lot better (I like the bad service cuz that's how I can really tell the pizza is gonna be good). This place had a lot of options and it seemed like you definitely couldn't go wrong with whatever you pick. I got the vodkas pizza and my friend got the peppers and sausage. Both were really really good. What I loved most was the crunch of the crust, it was perfect. Then once you crunched through the crust there was a perfect airy, light, and fluffy dough. Not only was the crust perfect, but so was the sauce and cheese. Everything was amazing.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here a couple times and fell in love with Village Square after drunkenly stumbling upon the East Village location one night. It was a classic NYC love story where we just needed something to eat at 2am after coming home from the bar, chose the random pizza place on the corner, and were still talking about how good it was the next day. Last time we ordered, we got the Buffalo chicken pizza which was exceptional...but, don't waste your time. This weekend we got the grandma square pie and it was just heavenly - he and I were both raving about it mid slice. Great crust, crispy but not burnt, fantastic sauce and the best pesto I've ever had. We ordered the garlic knots too and they were great. It's def a little on the pricey side, comparable to Prince Street, but well worth it. Great pies (oh, and the employees have been super nice at both locations every time we've gone in).
google avatar

Jenn L.

Yelp
AMAZING! This is their second location and their first one is in East Village. Both places have the same quality and that sign inside too. Literally taste like prince street pizza. When you order a fresh new pie, make sure you tell them you like it crispy! By the slice, since they're reheating it, it's always going to be cripsy and crunchy.
google avatar

Rohit J.

Yelp
Stopped by on a pizza tour and had an enjoyable experience. Cute outpost that seems fairly popular, and based on reviews was expecting some of the best pizza in the city. Definitely felt the quality was up there, but in comparison with some of my other stops felt the quality was a bit lower here, and the crust a bit too crunchy (good if you like your pizza that way). Would recommend if you are in the area, but may not be worth a special trip.
google avatar

Shaima C.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Friday night and my friend and I ended up getting a classic grandma pie and a pepperoni square. The classic square was thin and the sauce was on the sweeter side. Oddly enough it was a good combo and I enjoyed the slice. My friend enjoyed the pepperoni square, for a dollar extra you can get a side of mikes hot honey, which was a great combo he said. It's a cool place, should check it out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Tony P.

Yelp
So good! This place was recommended on a YouTube channel I had watched and I just had to try for myself! The crunch, the flavor, the sweet heat from the hot honey. So, SO good! I definitely see why it made the list for one of NYC's best pizza spots!
google avatar

Juan C. R.

Yelp
I will not give them zero stars because it is not posible. I bought the pizza close to 12 am. I paid for it and gave them a tip. A minute after I was told "we are closing". They didn't let me eat it! They gave me a box and off you go. They practically closed the door on my face. Never again. BTW it does taste good but I believe they should allow people to eat it inside. 5 minutes tops.
google avatar

Randy G.

Yelp
Great place to eat for less than $15! Huge portions and the flavor is amazing. You should really try the hot oil with your slice! Excellent pizza and lived up to hype.

Yelp
One of my favorite pizza spot in Manhattan. The square pizza has a nice, crispy bottom and not skimpy with the toppings. They'll reheat the pizza once you order. Definitely need to get the hot honey on the side to drizzle over the pepperoni pizza. I'd definitely make a stop when I'm in that area!

Yelp
Very quick bite to eat and good food. Nice change up with the square slices. I never thought of hot honey as being an additive to a piece of pizza but it was great!!
