"After stopping by the Village’s grand, Art Deco former bank building to browse the huge selection of Southern Appalachian arts and crafts at the Southern Highland Craft Guild shop, pop next door to the laid-back Village Wayside for lunch in the neighborhood’s 1896 passenger train depot." - Gina Smith

"Located in an old train depot, Wayside Village Bar & Grille is one of the city’s best casual eateries with the most inventive cuisine combinations. The owners come from both Tex-Mex and Greek backgrounds, and their interpretation of the two cuisines combined is nothing short of delicious. The Bloody Marys are well balanced, and the Asian chicken salad is an ideal choice. Start with the cold-hot dip and order a side of macaroni salad. This is a restaurant to save room for before you arrive and then eat your way through the menu — because no choice is bad here." - MATADOR_NETWORK

It was just okay. Food was very filling and good. But service was a bit slow. We had asked for drink refills and never got them. The cold hot dip was more of a sour cream than a proper dip. Still good though. Homemade chips were good too. The place just left more to be desired.

Rachel was absolutely amazing for only being there for 2 months. Fish and fries were amazing. But the star of the show was the duck wings, OMG! AWESOME LITTLE PUB!....

Old train depot converted to a restaurant. Service was wonderful and food was so good. Nice variety on the menu. I had the chicken Philly sandwich with cheese fries and pasta salad. Husband had doc Carlos chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries

Google
Really amazing service, came on a Saturday evening for dinner and we were promptly served. Our waitress was very attentive and had our drinks and food out very quickly. We got a gyro and quinoa bowl. The quinoa was so good and the peanut sauce is amazing. Everyone was super nice and the restaurant has fun decor. If in the area I’d definitely come back.

Delicious burgers and great selection of craft beers. French fries were really good. Fund bar atmosphere since it's a converted train station. Outdoor accommodation for smoking.

Google
We had a great dinner here! Highly recommended. It was delicious. Brisket plate and Fettuccine Carbonara. We were only in town for the weekend, but I got the impression they stay very busy. No reservations, but they are quick with service and hosting. It’s an informal, boisterous place. But the food was delicious and well presented. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you go. And you should!!

We had a great lunch here. I had the meatball sandwich which was delicious! My friends had the wings and the chicken sandwich. Both were really good. We enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Google
This place was amazing! Our waiter was very good and is a natural with customer service. My wife got the fish and fries and LOVED IT. I got the fettuccine Alfredo with blackened chicken and it was so good and fresh. Fresh food all around. Fresh tea. Definitely recommend. A ' must go ' to anyone in or visiting asheville!!

Yelp
We've been coming to this fantastic restaurant since they opened many years ago. Most restaurants don't get better with age, but this one has. Over the years my family has frequented this place because the menu has such great variety and everything is so thoughtfully prepared. Let me list our favorites-their POTATO CHIPS, onion rings, superfood salad with chicken, quinoa crunch bowl with salmon, house salad, cheeseburger, brisket, meatball sandwich, spaghetti and meatballs, hot and cold dip, homemade soups, chicky Philly sandwich, chicken Alfredo, TURKEY SANDWICH, and ALL OF THEIR DESSERTS. Basically, you can't go wrong here. It's obvious that everything is freshly made. They have a full bar and prices are reasonable. Just go!

Yelp
Looking for a place to walk to for dinner when staying in Biltmore Village, I ended up at the Village Wayside. It was a nice evening so I chose to sit outside. The patio was decent, at the side of the restaurant next to the parking lot. (More on that later) I couldn't decide what to order as there were 2 chicken sandwiches that sounded good. I asked my server his thoughts and he suggested I combine the 2! He said the Doc Decarlo's was a unique sandwich with the grilled chicken and Cheerwine BBQ sauce; bacon and cream cheese but then he took the pretzel roll from the Gouda Chicken because the rolls are made fresh in house. It was an excellent sandwich. I did like the uniqueness of the cream cheese with the bbq sauce and smoky grilled chicken. The fries were also very good. My biggest complaint and what knocked this from a solid 4 to a 3 was the patio. I tend to be sensitive to cigarette smoke but can deal with it. I smelled it as soon as I sat down but couldn't find the smoker. Then an older couple sat at the table next to me and complained to their server about the smoke. He said the smoking section is the front and back of the restaurant, not the side. I get it, wind blows, so we just have to deal with it. However as the restaurant got busy groups of people started gathering waiting for their table. Standing by the patio and moving the potted plants on the decorative wagon at the patio so they could sit down. They also came into the patio taking empty chairs from tables and sitting down. They then proceeded to start smoking and vaping on the patio. While I find it hard to blame a restaurant for the rudeness of other guests, I do blame the staff for not enforcing their own rules of smoking areas especially when they already received a complaint. It's hard to manage smoking outside, I get it and understand but if you're going to have a designated non-smoking area, then enforce it. Food was good, atmosphere was not so hence the 3 stars.

Yelp
We were visiting the Biltmore Village area (shopping and dining) when we spotted this restaurant located in the old train depot. Double checking with my fellow Yelpers, the site had good reviews so we gave it a try. We both ordered a cup of soup - today's special was cheesy (feta) tomato basil and it was excellent. I had cabbage rolls - served with mashed potatoes. Outside of some ethnic restaurants, it's a little unusual to find cabbage rolls on a restaurant menu. The Village Wayside's preparation of the cabbage rolls was spot-on and reminded me of ones I used to get in some old Polish and Hungarian restaurants back in Ohio. My wife ordered the teriyaki glazed salmon with the vegetable medley. She's quite picky about her salmon and said this was excellent. Service was excellent and the food was excellent.

Yelp
Enjoyed it! We stopped in after a visit to the Biltmore. It was a rainy Saturday early evening. This restaurant is centrally located in Asheville. There is parking out front to the left of the building. We both ate from the appetizer section of the menu. She had the tuna tacos and an order of the 'frites style fries' and I had the chicken tenders and fries. All food was hot and fresh and delicious. We split a cupcake for dessert. My friend had a couple of beers to drink and commented on the inexpensive the bar bill was. Our server was EXCELLENT! We had John and he was amazing. If you are visiting Asheville definitely eat here!

Yelp
Party of 12 of us stopped by on a Thursday afternoon. Our bartenders Hannah and John were all over it. Everyone had a cocktail within minutes and our food came out right away. I can't say enough about the service that John and Hannah provided, while also managing the rest of the bar area. The cocktails were solid pours and delicious with the NY Sour being a standout. The pub food was similarly delicious - the onions were said to be "the best I've ever had" by several of us. The fish and chips were super flaky and light and use the same batter made with French Broad Kolsch beer that is fantastic - no greasiness that you might expect. The hand-cut fries were super tasty - especially with a splash of malt vinegar. The Cowboy Cuban with brisket was superb as was the "Fettichoke". The Yelp! rating is what brought our group in and is really well-earned here at Wayside. If you're in the Biltmore Village area and looking for a great spot for craft beer, cocktails, and quick/tasty food - come to Wayside.

Yelp
I'm never disappointed with the food here. I wish it was a cuter place. And the staff can be kind of strange -- like weird social interactions - but they're attentive and get the orders right. Prices are average for where we live. Portions are good size but not over sized. Eclectic menu. I like this place! So do my friends. I can't get my husband to go but he's the suspicious sort and the lack of "identity" in the menu and ambiance give him pause.

Ashlee L.

Yelp
We are visiting Asheville from Texas and if I'm being honest this place kinda sucks so far. At least the customer service aspect. We arrived at 8:45 to be told the kitchen was closed while online through Apple Maps, Yelp and google it shows 10pm closing. When I informed the staff they didn't care and were rude about it. No thanks. *although we didn't get to try any food I do want to mention the place itself had a pungent smell of fabuloso and chicken

Sheila B.

Yelp
Driving around Asheville looking for a local hangout for a non local. While traveling, I try to avoid the chain restaurants for obvious reasons. As I was about to give up the map spoke to me and I followed to land at this little spot where it was an obvious local favorite. Not too crowded as it is a Tuesday night at 7:30. I was seated and served immediately. The draft beer selection was minimal but they had many options in cans mostly from Local breweries. I would definitely recommend if you're in the mood for beer and a burger while in Asheville!

Yelp
The food is really good but my server was a A hole but beside that looks really good place to eat must try again

Yelp
My wife checked out places near our hotel to grab something to eat. She picked this place because it had good reviews and was very close, in fact we were able to walk. We were immediately greeted when we entered and asked if wanted to sit in the bar or the dining room. We said we would rather sit in the bar area. The place felt like a locals establishment right in the middle of town. We were given menus and our server came to take our drink orders and we perused the menu. We chatted a little with our server about our travels and the menu looking for her recommendations. My wife chose the Super Food Salad and I decided to get the Cuban Cowboy Sandwich which is Texas style beef brisket, Cuban pork, pickles, Swiss cheese and sweet bacon mustard sauce on a ciabatta roll. We also decided to get the CBR fries appetizer. The CBR fries appetizer arrived first, looked amazing and tasted delicious. My wife and I picked through them until they were gone. I could easily say they were the best bacon, cheese fries in recent memory. Our entrees arrived a short while later and also looked amazing. My wife enjoyed her salad and thought it was original. My sandwich was also very tasty. We also thought the prices were especially good for a tourist town. We would highly recommend to others visiting Asheville!

Ray R.

Yelp
Do not order the Onion Rings for an extra cost. You will get 3 and be charged $2.99. Other than the annoying service staff, you actually might like it.

Gg 4.

Yelp
Their burger is amazing and their staff was so friendly when I placed my order for pick up. I was really surprised by the variety on the menu. Can't wait to come back and sit at the bar. Seems like a cool place to grab some food and watch the game.

Ashley S.

Yelp
This restaurant is very quirky - we couldn't decide what it was (a pub? a tavern? An English restaurant with some American food? An American restaurant with some European food?). Regardless of what it is, the food is FANTASTIC! My sandwich was one of the best I've had in my life. My husband said his burger and chips were great. We had the parmesan frite fries as an appetizer, and they were delicious, too. The manager greeted us, and our server was great at explaining the menu and substitutions based on availability.

Tiarra T.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this restaurant after trying to find an option in Biltmore village. The restaurant wasn't well lite and looked like an old tavern. We sat near the windows which let in a lot of cold air. The hostess and waiter provided good service. The menu had lots of options. My food was good. I had the salmon with a side salad. The salmon was grilled and came with a side of balsamic dressing. Everything was cooked well. I enjoyed every bite. I only wish I had the recipe to the dressing.

Jim K.

Yelp
We enjoyed a great lunch today dining on their patio. The Village Wayside was originally the train station for Biltmore Village creating a unique setting. They offer an array of delicious crafted salads and sandwiches. We had the Curry Chicken Salad sandwich with homemade chips and the Cowboy Cuban sandwich with Asian Slaw. The Curry Chicken Salad sandwich was packed with a very generous amount of some of the best chicken salad I've ever tasted. The homemade potato chips were perfectly fried. The Cowboy Cuban was a twist on the classic Cuban with the addition of brisket, grilled onions, and a nice barbecue sauce. The ciabatta bread was wonderful. I recommend the Asian Slaw for a delightful side. Our server was wonderfully friendly and attentive. While we didn't have a beer or drinks, they offer many of the local brews as well as specialty cocktails. Highly recommended for a delicious lunch.

Pete L.

Yelp
I cannot complain about anything. The place dishes up smiles and unicorns. I had the Wayside burger with Caesar side. Wife did spinach salad with gyro. All super quality. Wayside is a foodie place on a pub budget. Great friendly prompt service. Music had no electronic drums or autotune. I hate sharing so much because I might never be able to get in again.

Terri W.

Yelp
Housed in an old train depot, The Village Wayside is a cool space for a reasonably priced lunch or casual dinner in the heart of Biltmore Village. I love their burgers which are HUGE and served on a delicious pretzel bun with an order of crunchy onion rings, and their version of a wedge salad with avocado and tzatziki feta. Not everyone can pull that off. I mean a classic wedge is hard to top but this twist is quite good! Oh! Oh! I almost forgot...the Gateway Fish and Fries is also excellent. Super fresh tasting, crispy and piping hot (I always ask for malt vinegar to sprinkle on it for some tang as well as their homemade tartar sauce which isn't bad. The service has always been fast and friendly, and it kinda feels like Cheers in there! Lots of value for the money and just a fun place to go with friends and fam. Please tip your servers well- we want them to stay!!

Kevin G.

Yelp
Great outside seating the weather was just right for being outside today. They are dog friendly and we sat out there with our Westie. Service was excellent, server was very knowledgeable about options on the menu and recommendations. The ladies both had the Cuban Cowboy and substituted Sweet Potato Tots, they loved them especially with the Honey Mustard sauce. Thought the sandwiches were the best they had in a while. I had the fish and fries, cooked to perfection two good size pieces of white fish. Fries were very good also and with the malt vinegar loved them. Had the Gaelic Ale, always love a red ale with my meals if I can get it. They had it on tap so that made it even better. This would be my go to place for a beer if I lived in the area. Keep up the great work thank you.

Kate A.

Yelp
I got a really tasty curry chicken salad sandwich here for takeout the other day. The host was quick to get my order and even offered to run and get me a drink tray when he saw I was holding a baby, even during a busy lunch shift. Everything we ordered was great! The actual takeout order was well packed and traveled well.

Kathy P.

Yelp
Much better places to eat in Biltmore Square. Waitress,Kay,was nice and very attentive but the food was average. I got the Ann arbor sandwich plus bacon. Bun was dry and a little burned. BLT was super small and average. For me, a sandwich is all about the bread and both failed in that category. The only thing I would recommend are the onion rings. Had a decent selection of drinks and beer. Some parking in front. Average atmosphere. Nothing special. The Mexican place across the street and the corner kitchen are sooo much better.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Food is great no-frills tavern food! For the sound sensitive there is music but it's playing pretty low and not over stimulating.

Susie R.

Yelp
Nice hamburger place with lots of other sandwich offerings. It wasn't too crowded at 6 on a Saturday night in February. Darned cold outside so maybe that's why. My dinner of Potsy's Piggy, cabbage rolls, with mashed potatoes was good but came out tepid. They were very nice and heated it up right away and it was wonderful. (Wait staff was wonderful!!) The mashed potatoes are great with a few chunks, like homemade and so good. Def recommended. My slaw, regular, not Asian, was not too sweet and had sesame seeds. Very good. RRR enjoyed a junior burger (half pound was too much) with a side salad. It was plenty of food for him and quite good. This is s cozy little place in a great area with lots of shopping. Stop by if you're in the area.

Dan O.

Yelp
The food and drinks were absolutely delicious! Service was quick and very responsive and helpful. Such a cool atmosphere with it being in Biltmore Village.

Sara D.

Yelp
Our large family group was anxious to try this restaurant because of positive reviews. However, despite the fact that there were only one or two people in the place, the very unaccommodating host refused to move even one table so that we could all sit together. He was rude to my nephew and suggested we go to a restaurant across the street! We did and Village Wayside lost a $350.00 lunch sale. This may be a good restaurant but it will never get my business.

Molly Z.

Yelp
Ask about their daily specials! I had a delicious corn and serrano pepper chowder. I also had the Philly cheesesteak with onion rings. The meat was tender and the portion was perfect for lunch. Service was super friendly and food came out quickly! Highly recommend if you're in Biltmore village.

Woolly B.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere, food, and service. We will definitely be coming back. Sorry, no photos but we scarfed down the superfood salad (with chicken) and the angus brisket burger (special).

Nancy W.

Yelp
This is a great little bar and restaurant with cute little outside seating area. But it does sit right next to a busy road. I had a salad and a beer so not much excitement going on there. The salad was $10 and the beer was $3.50. And both were very good. The server was nice but was strangely dressed with a tiny tank top and her beige bra hanging out. Someone called the fashion police. There were some locals there staring me down and complaining about the tourist. So it did not leave a good vibe in my soul. I was just passing through wanted to check out the historic Biltmore Village which is a small village of high priced clothing stores. Not much to see here. I would not return to this area again.

Kimberly R.

Yelp
This location is in Biltmore Village, right across from the Biltmore Estate entrance. The parking is a in front and beside the building and you can also park across the street in a public lot for the villages shops and restaurants. The tables are a little crammed together, but it's cozy and there's a nice bar area. The food is very good. We have had a few different things off the menu. The wings, steak, burger. All have been very well cooked and brought out quickly. The service here is great. We had Jay the most recent visit. Very nice little place in Biltmore for dinner.

Nic B.

Yelp
Fantastic food, beer was great, and service was awesome too. We got 3 different meals and all were well seasoned with great flavor. Onion rings were satisfyingly crispy and large in size. Servers were knowledgeable, and very accommodating.

Tina H.

Yelp
It's been a long time, but we were trying to think of somewhere to do for lupper (not lunch, not supper but lupper). We decided to give it a try. We attempted to try the duck wings, but they were out. So we ordered the pork wings. We ordered the cheerwine sauce. They were tender and the sauce, while a little sweet, it was a great compliment to the pork. My husband reported the steak frites were amazing. So of course I had to try because I just didn't believe the look of ecstasy on his face. I was so pleasantly surprised. The steak was tender and perfectly seasoned. And that seasoning on the fries was the best ever. Our server was timely. She kept our drinks full. She smiled and was pleasant. Porky's Piggys were like little pillows of pork. The tomato sauce wasn't acidic but a nice gravy topping the potatoes and cabbage rolls. I enjoyed half and will finish for lunch tomorrow. We will definitely not forget this Asheville gem.

Barry F.

Yelp
Nice place in a great area! Solid food! I would definitely go back there again! Not fancy just quality food and service!

Holly K.

Yelp
Very nice lunch out on the patio. Our server, Kate H, was so sweet. Pampered our Aussie as well as us. Our lunch was very good...I had the daily special, grilled chicken club on ciabatta and hubby had the fish and chips. Weather was perfect for dining outside. Really enjoyed all.

Andrew C.

Yelp
The Village Wayfield once was a railroad depot. The railracks run along the restaurant and they do have outdoor dining tables there as well. We chose to dine indoors in the very front part of the restaurant. The dining rooms seem to be rustic and similar to it's original origin. I ordered an local IPA to start while we wandered through the menu. I found that the service was very. Since they seem to have some Greek flavor to their menu, I decided on a salad with gyro meat on it. Everyone seem to enjoy their lunch, and I would easily return on my next visit to Ashville.

Sunny R.

Yelp
Nice local place with good food. Has a quaint small town feel right by the town's railroad tracks, but couldn't hear the train rumble by the windows. We had feta/artichoke dip, very tasty with pitas triangles. The sandwiches we large with fresh bread. Onion rings and home made potatoe chips were perfect! Husband and I had the pasta dishes and the sauces were very tasty! Bar was a suprise with Buffalo Trace...always nice to see that bottle behind the bar. It was such a nice experience we'll probably be back again before we leave town.

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
This place was unbelievably good. I will be returning the service was great. Had a awesome waiter tell us about the coconut pie. I will tell you that it was so good I want to buy a entire pie!

Korbin D.

Yelp
The food was absolutely gas af, the drink was good as the meal will come back definitely

Jason M.

Yelp
We had a party of 6 all of us originally from different areas of the country, so pallets varied. Every single person found their food exceptional! Everyone. Staff is laid back and friendly. Best gyro I've had since I lived in Chicago. And yes, you can fuck up a gyro... We will definitely return on our next trip to Asheville.

Karen L.

Yelp
Stopped at Village Wayside for a quick lunch while visiting Asheville. It's a casual place with casual food. I ordered the Superfoods Salad with chicken which did the trick of filling me up with a nutritious blend of veggies, but it just didn't leave me wanting to come back for more. My friend had the Greek Salad and she felt the same way. The service was quick and friendly, and there was ample free street parking in the area.

Charles E.

Yelp
The food, drinks and service were very good. Classic neighborhood pub feel but in a very cool part of Asheville. The choices of unique sandwiches and entrees were great. We got a burnt end burger and Cuban cowboy (basically with brisket instead of pulled pork). Drinks were a good price for Asheville and the Fuentes Colada (Coconut rum, Pineapple juice and Kahlua) was great. The server was very nice. The food and drinks was only $40. Great spot in Asheville.

Sherra W.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch while driving through Biltmore Village. The place was full, but we were lucky enough to get seated right away. Server was very friendly and gave great suggestions. If you visit, do yourself a favor and order the onion rings. They are legit.

Jill R.

Yelp
Very good. Selection in town is currently limited but this place turned out very good. Fish and chips-amazing...their batter is fantastic. Not too heavy or rich. The onion rings are equally ask good. Burger was good. Nothing special but good. Not disappointing. Beef brisket also very good. The bread served with the brisket was ridiculous good; s toasted slices of sour dough but just a little bit of butter. Simple but good. Old Fashioned was also very good. Heavy on the orange which was surprisingly good.

Eric J.

Yelp
Really disappointed and angry at a place i used to come to for years. Decided to ditch the south Asheville restaurants and make the drive to Wayside for my wife and I for some covid-safe carryout. Medium well on a burger doesnt look like this, Wayside. Unacceptable and now a poor night. Thanks a lot for the long drive and the pissed off wife. The order takers are nice, the staff has always been great, the bartenders are polite. I actually feel bad about complaining about the food.

Alex E.

Yelp
YUM! 5 Stars for their ONION RINGS alone, y'all! Husband and I grabbed some food to go. (Can't speak to in-person service). We split the Fish & Chips, and their Cold Hot Chicken Philly sandwich. Can't wait to go back and try other things on their menu! I'm going to go with 4.5 stars I think.....until I can try again and decide if this is "average pub food" or "amazing pub food." Time will tell.

Hannah A.

Yelp
Cute locally owned restaurant! There was an employee outside greeting guests before they came in. Everyone was wearing masks and tables were separated. Everyone was very knowledgeable about the menu and there were delicious options for vegetarians. Everything we got was delicious, and made fresh in house. They even slice their own potatoes for the French fries. 10/10 review from a family of 5. Would definitely come back if we're in the area! Also, Joshua was a great server!!

Rebecca C.

Yelp
First Timers and we were NOT disappointed!! The appetizer of Duck wings was perfection and our meals were both excellent. My daughter ordered the Depot Hamberger with mashed potatoes and she scarfed them both down no problems and with a twelve Yr old - NO COMPLAINTS!! She loved the food. That's saying a lot. My plate was the Gyro with onion rings and I'm telling you the onion rings are Some of the best I've ever eaten!! Overall we are very happy with our selection Bc we don't eat out in this area of Asheville so we were clueless on if it was gonna be worth the gamble. It was!!!! Ask for John he was an excellent server!! Super polite, smiled a lot (you would be surprised at how many servers don't even smile these days) and his service was perfectly timed. Drinks always filled and came back at the right time to see how it was. Great experience!! Thanks from a super tired Mom who worked all day and shopped a few hours and didn't want to cook dinner!! We will be back!!

Ty A.

Yelp
Stopped for a bite and a drink at the bar. Both bartender's were attentive and kept my refreshment's full. Wanted something healthy to eat and the bartender recommended a healthy salad with sirloin tips. Was exactly what I wanted. Fresh greens and kale. The meat was tender and tasty. This is probably the fifth time I've been here while visiting Ashville and I always enjoy myself. Unlike many other places in Ashville, Wayside is consistent and great place for a traveler. See ya'll next year! Fan from San Diego.

Brenda M.

Yelp
We loved the atmosphere and staff so much that we went back for dinner on our second night. In a fantastic historical train station.

Jen D.

Yelp
This is one of our most favorite places in Asheville, the Potsys Piggy's ( Hungarian stuffed cabbage) is fantabulous and the Doc's deCarlo (chargrilled Chicken, cheerwine bbq sauce, bacon, cream cheese in a pita will have you in Southern Heaven, even their grilled cheese will rock your mouth. If anyone comes to visit, this is where we go. They have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options ...is Cheerwine vegan? I don't know. They also have a full bar...just saying.

June M.

Yelp
My husband and I stumbled on Village Wayside when walking around Biltmore Village Shops. The restaurant is housed in an old rail station. It is a log structure with small windows and so the interior is dark and feels somewhat like an old English pub. We were there during the day and thought it would be a good place to come back to at night with its large bar and old world charm. We were surprised to find a creative menu with lots of healthy options in addition to the pub-like food. We ordered the Quinoa Crunch Salad and Super Food Salad. Both would beautifully presented and delicious. My Crunch Salad lived up to its name as I had to chew quite a bit, but the peanut dressing made it worthwhile. Give this place a try. It's so different from anything else in the area and the staff is very friendly.
