Vin Sur Vingt Review - Upper West Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Like the other locations of Vin Sur Vingt around the city, this UWS outpost is a good early-in-the-game date spot. It’s a small, brick-walled wine bar filled with good smells from the food being made behind the bar, like tartines and shareable charcuterie plates. The long, all-French wine list has over 50 options available by the glass, and you can also try things in flights of three or five glasses." - Matt Tervooren

I sat on the patio around 4pm and was surprised they have an excellent happy hour menu! I ordered the white wine $10 (white Grenache), 6 wellfleet oysters $1.50 per oyster, escargot $5, and I couldn't help but also get the chicken and duck mousse served with some delicious crunchy bread and pickles $12 (not on happy hour). It was so nice and relaxing being out on the patio after running errands all day. I will definitely be back for dinner with my husband and will be trying the mussels, beef tartare, and the pork liver pate.

Google
Cute neighborhood spot that I feel always gets attention taken away by Etto and Le Dip but this place is better/worth it in my opinion. Pricey but they have an exceptional list of wines. So many wines that it’ll take you a minute to get through it all. It’s a big spot with nice outdoor seating. I haven’t had an issue getting a table here by walking in. They serve food like cheese boards, fries, escargot. Staff is super friendly and helpful in selecting your wine.

Google
Delicious food and wine. I ordered the mussels which were good, but the broth was rather simple and could have used a more diverse flavor palette. But the waiter brought some bread at the end of the meal to soak up the extra broth, and that redeemed the whole experienced and filled me up. I will come back here in the future and try additional menu items.

Google
The cheese and warm bread were probably my favorite part. The French onion soup was good. Could be cheesier. The confit de canard could be more flavorful and moist. The wine was great. The atmosphere was charming. The chocolate mousse tasted like actual dark belgian chocolate. Overall enjoyable time. Reminiscent of a brasserie in Paris. Not too terrible price wise.

We had an outstanding dining experience thanks to our waiter, Tim. His recommendations for both the wine and food were absolutely perfect and elevated our evening. Tim’s knowledge, attention to detail, and warm service made the dinner truly memorable. Highly recommended!

Google
Grace was our server and she was truly so kind!! We are not really wine drinkers and she took the time to ask us questions and recommend us a good and affordable bottle. At the end of the night she brought us some rose on the house which was so sweet. Overall 10/10

Google
Found this bistro while visiting DC. So glad we did! The food is delicious, staff friendly, and decor / setting very nice. My husband is French and is raving about the quality and authenticity of the food. Very reasonably priced too!

Yelp
This was a very cutesy and warm wine bar-- it feels like a wine bar that's owned by a small family! Everyone was super kind and very helpful when we were trying to choose the wine. We started off with a cheese platter (which was great), and then moved on to order the beef tartare and risotto, both of which were fantastic. I'll definitely be returning if I'm craving a nice, casual wine bar with good food!

Yelp
This was a great wine bar, and I can definitely see myself becoming a regular here. The wine was great -- aromatic, robust, and paired wonderfully with the food. For food, we ordered 3 cassolettes -- shrimp provencales, boeuf bourguignon, and duck parmentier. Everything was so flavorful, and my personal favorite was the duck parmentier. It was absolutely amazing and paired so well with the side of bread. The shrimp provencales were also seasoned perfectly, and the bouef bourguignon was very tender. We also ordered a side of fries, but they came out soggy and unseasoned. Interior is quite dark with low warm lighting, creating an intimate and cozy feel. Waiters are nice and friendly. A man who appeared to be the manager came over at one point and asked us not to take pictures with the flash, I don't think we've ever experienced this ask at any restaurant in the DMV area, so this was a first. Understandable if there were more customers in our vicinity, but the restaurant was pretty empty when we went. We also only took 3 photos with the flash, the rest were taken without flash. Overall, we had a great experience and can already see ourselves coming back!

Yelp
This place is a vibe!!! Skip Le Dip and head here instead. Cozy and beautiful interior, super friendly and knowledgeable, and the food delivers. I got a super traditional French meal - French onion soup, Niçoise salad, and a crème brûlée. Girl dinner to the max and I have no regrets, it was amazing! The waitress also completely understood the assignment for a solo diner and seated me in the coziest corner. I had the best time!

Yelp
Omg! In DC for a conference and what a great experience. The ambiance is just lovely, right down to the tile work on the floors. I had the luxury of being the first customer of the evening so I got all of the attention of the servers. They are quite knowledgeable and so, so personable that I could easily spend hours here!! I ordered the Croque Provençal and, WOW, it did not disappoint. I am going to try to make excuses to come again this week. Excellent experience all the way around!

Yelp
Had a fabulous time at Vin Sur Vingt!! Came around 6 with a friend for dinner. We had a reservation but the restaurant was empty so it'd be easy to walk in and there was plenty of space at the bar. We were seated immediately and our waiter came over quickly. We had a few questions on wines and were trying to decide between the two orange wines on the menu as those are our favorites. Our waiter was really kind and let us try both and we ended up getting a bottle. The wine was DELICIOUS we were so pleased. They have a ton of really reasonably priced bottles which is nice and an extensive list of wines by the glass. For food I had a variation of a croquettes madam with pesto and it was fabulous, decadent, and filling. The sandwiches come with fries or salad (I got both) and everything was delicious. The salad was fresh, well seasoned and tasty, and the fries have a really unique seasoning, also really tasty. The atmosphere is great. Dimly lit and quiet enough to chat. Great for a girls dinner/catching up with friends. The service overall and our waiter was stellar! Super attentive and friendly. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
The wine here is so good, including the happy hour wine. The cheese plate was good, just kind of a small amount of cheese for the price.

Yelp
I'm rounding down to 5 because it was so popular that it was loud when we went (7pm on a Wednesday). Otherwise, the food was délicieux, the server was intelligent, and the wine was 'vingt sur vingt' perfect. I ordered the 'légumes' tartine, a rarely ordered menu item per the waiter, but it was really good - a medium-sized toast perhaps drizzled with oil, topped with zucchini and herbs. I wanted a chenin blanc and the server helpfully pointed to an off-the-menu wine that was excellent, fragrant and acidic (and thankfully not off-the-charts expensive). My friend enjoyed his shrimp salad with slices of oranges and big shrimp (although it was lite fare). For a second round, I opted for the Alsace Riesling which was a bit drier, but still quite good. We split a 3-cheese plate - going with a fresh goat cheese, comté, and blue cheese (so good, served with a bread basket), and the server assured it would not be an issue due to nut allergies. At the end, he comped us a digestif that helped wash down the check. We'll certainly be back.

Yelp
Their patio is perfect for sipping on wine, enjoying some French food and people watching! The patio fills up quickly so make sure to get there early. They have over 250 wines. I recommend asking the waiter for recommendations based on your favorite wines and flavors. Every glass we had was a winner here. Tomato Salad - Such a refreshing salad. I've never had a tomato salad before and was very pleased Charcuterie Board - May not be the prettiest charcuterie board but the quality was top notch! Loved the cheese selection and pate. Mac and Cheese - Super cheesy and delicious. The perfect sharable side. Beef Burgiorun - Great flavors! I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Get the small plate version to share so you have more room to eat! Spicy Lamb Meatball - Spicy and delicious Creme Brulee - Perfect dessert to end the night. You can get the large entrees here, but I highly recommend trying the smaller portions and sharing. You get to try more of their delicious food!

Yelp
I wish I could give more than 5 stars! As a French-favoring foodie I was impressed on so many levels. The food is perfect - we had salads and starters and mains - all perfect. The trout is a standout - someone knows how to crisp the skin and yet keep the fish moist and not overcooked. It's loud but it's a bistro style spot so it works. The service was attentive but not overly. Host was lovely. I will be back.

Yelp
I had an amazing time at the wine bar! I was craving a refreshing and slightly fruity white wine, which I picked was absolutely divine. And get this - despite it being a wine bar, I was blown away by one of the most incredible burgers I've ever tasted, topped with gooey cheese and caramelized onions. It was an an flavor explosion! To top it off, both my server, Eli, and the host, Tony, were incredibly welcoming and guided us in choosing the perfect wines and dishes.

Yelp
Stopped at VSV for a quick glass of wine on a Saturday night and was seated immediately. The servers were able to help us pick out a wine that best fit our likes and even raved about us getting their last bottle (so you know it was a big seller haha). It was a little loud inside but the dark wood decor made the ambience. I didn't try any food, but definitely worth the visit for a glass of wine especially with all their selection.

Yelp
My husband and I had a wonderful start to our date night here yesterday. Our waiter curated our wine tastings to our preferences and was so helpful (I wish I got his name!). My husband wanted to sit outside to enjoy the weather but I was unprepared without bug spray. Our waiter came to my rescue and I am eternally grateful. The food and wines are all top notch. They have a great selection of wines from different regions in France. For food we shared a smoked salmon sandwich (lots of salmon!), Lamb meatballs (yum), French onion soup (sooo good with duck broth), beef tartare (tasty), and the shredded lamb. I'd get it all again in a heartbeat. They kept our water glasses full at all times too. This was definitely a five star experience!

Samantha V.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I had the best time here on a quick night out! The service was impeccable and the food was absolutely incredible. The inside is quaint and not too stuffy for a wine bar, while there's cute outdoor seating as well when it's nice out! Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
Service was exceptional, charcuterie board was tasty, and ambiance was great. Personally I do not drink but I went with a group who does to celebrate our friend. While the only non-alcoholic drinks were things like coke (which I also did not want), the waiter brought me a sparkling water on the house so I could have something to cheers with. We let the waiter also choose our charcuterie board and it was delicious!! The bread was soft and paired well with the cheese and meats. At the end, the waiters gave my friend a crème brûlée to celebrate the occasion which I thought was so thoughtful. While I did not drink, my friends really liked the wine (which the staff also picked for us).

Sheridan S.

Yelp
Very nice service, including assistance picking out individual wines for us. I'm vegetarian and shared the beet salad, Croque Provençale sandwich, and risotto with my mom. The risotto was incredibly flavorful. The sandwich was so good and shockingly stayed good as a leftover for a week! My husband had the chicken and said it was very good.

Yelp
I love this place! Honestly, I don't understand why people go across the street to Le Dip. The food here is amazing and the vibe is super chill. I find myself pulling my phone out every few minutes to ask what song is playing (Shazam anyone)? The food is absolutely delicious. I've have the mussels and the steak frites. They have an extensive wine list and the staff is very knowledgeable. Speaking of the staff, they're great. This is currently my favorite spot on 14th Street!
google avatar

Hayley A.

Yelp
When our table wasn't ready when our reservation began, we were offered a free round of drinks while we waited. Then, when there was a pretty lengthy delay between our appetizer and our entrees, we were given another partial cheese board. At the end of the night we were given another complementary round of drinks (not even sure why)! All of this is to say that we felt very well treated despite some delays in service. Staff is super nice. Ambiance, drinks, and food are great. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I enjoyed VSV when in NYC and when I saw this location pop up on my radar in DC I was pleased to learn that the only location outside of NYC happened to be in my backyard. The curated happy hour, knowledgeable and French speaking staff and the extensive wine list and food menu bleu me away. Their French onion soup is excellent and uniquely made with a duck and beef broth giving it a distinctly French flavor. The cheese plates are incredible and local and I couldn't recommend the steak tartare more highly. We can't wait to be back.

Melaine V.

Yelp
Visiting the area. We love our wine! This place was amazing. Great service. Everyone was attentive. Great patio and menu is perfect. Highly recommend if you're in the area and enjoy good French wines.

Yelp
Absolutely loved my experience here. It was my first time exploring around northwest DC. The service was constantly checking in and making sure we were OK to ensure we had everything we needed. They were constantly filling our water which was great. The food we ordered was abundant well priced and all so delicious. I love their selection of food and the great pricing for the DC area. We also did the five wine tasting which was about $30 I believe. They are with staff was very knowledgeable not only about the menu but about the wine on the menu. Cannot wait to come back again. Great outdoor seating and probably a perfect place for a date night.

Yelp
Staycation on the 14th street corridor. Most would flock toward le Diplomate, but this lovely spot is just around the corner. Wonderfully helpful and cheerful staff; delicious fresh ingredients, and an amazing wine list. This was a pleasant and surprising respit from the summer heat. Will definitely be coming back here! Merci!
google avatar

Lucy Q.

Yelp
Unfortunately, our first experience at VSV didn't start off great. We arrived for our reservation and were told we had to wait 20 minutes. Defeats the purpose of a reservation, IMO. we were finally seated for our 8:45 reservation at 9:10pm. We had to ask for some sort of compensation for our wait time, in which we were then given complimentary glasses of wine (thank you!). The wait staff seemed very busy and overwhelmed. After we finally ordered, we tried the macaroni and cheese (our favorite dish), a la creme mussels, and petit plats deal - poulet a la creme, bourguignon maison, and saumon asparagus. On the bright side, all of our food was delicious! I recommend this place but would want to come back after a few months once they work out all the kinks.
google avatar

Nalini M.

Yelp
Food was just terrible..... boeuf bourguignon is more a beef round soup with chunks of small potato pieces and carrots and tasted lousy. The charcuterie and cheese felt older than the norm... green almost... the bread tasted stale. Only redeeming quality were the desserts with the lavender crème brulee which was divine. Still not worth it for the food perhaps just to drink not so bad wine. I'd say if you want a better experience go to Le Diplomate next door. Noisy loud and mediocre food.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot! Came for Happy Hour one Friday evening and really enjoyed it. Good service and cute ambiance. The hostess wasn't overly friendly and seemed put out when we asked to switch to a table farther from the door (they had just opened and we were literally the only people in the entire place) but after that hiccup everything went well. I'll be back!
google avatar

Ava S.

Yelp
Tried the mussels, streak and fries, and the burger. All delicious! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Mary H.

Yelp
Service is wonderful here. They take good care of customers and are knowledgeable on wine. I like their food as well. We usually get a bottle after 10pm on the weekend (always 25% off) with some cheeses. I'm a repeat customer and will be for my time in dc.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Decent new French spot in Logan Circle. Let's get to the elephant on the block first and acknowledge that they made the baffling decision to open directly across the street from Le Diplomate, which is both a far better restaurant and a beloved local institution. If you're on the hunt for French cuisine and a restaurant exuding Parisian charm, Le Diplomate is where you want to be. If you just want a snack and/or some wine on a patio, Vin Sur Vingt is a decent choice. The quality of the food is a bit lacking and is quite frankly a disappointment. The wine list is substantial, though. They have many by the glass options and tons of bottles to try. If you're a connoisseur, you need to try them at least once. We enjoyed our time on the patio while the sun set over the block. It's a pleasant spot nearby tons of other great bars and restaurants, which made for great people watching and an overall nice time.
google avatar

Souky B.

Yelp
After our disappointing Van Gogh experience; I had the pleasure of finding this slice of yummm...Wines galore (Pinot Noir, can't find it anywhere else was delicious). The antipasto dish, escargot and the overall setting was very professional with great customer service and friendly environment. If you wanna know about wine or already know a lot, have a visit!! You won't be disappointed...

Kim A.

Yelp
Great selection of French wine. Friendly and attentive staff. We really loved our quick stop here before dinner.
google avatar

Sebastien C.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting. The bread is awful, the beets were not cook, the croque madame full of mustard. Fries were dry. The only good thing is the service and the location.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
nothing better than some free glasses of sparking rosé following a bottle of the best French Rosé we've ever had!! love this place. Adam is great and their happy hour is criminal !!

Serena F.

Yelp
Vin Sur Vingt has great ambiance. It's as good as its neighbor Le Dip, but way less pretentious. The mussels are great and they have a fantastic bottle selection. My big critique is that it's absolutely absurd that a $17 glass of champagne gets you half a glass. I was so surprised about how little champagne I got that I asked the waiter to confirm I was indeed supposed to only get half a glass. Absolutely absurd.

Pat H.

Yelp
5/5: Vin Sur Vingt is exceptional. Perhaps some of the other reviewers went on off nights, but we visited on a Wednesday night and sat at the bar. For starters, I just returned from a week long stay in Paris, and I was looking for a place with some great beef bourguignon and steak tartare after a disappointing meal at Le Diplomate. 100% VSV was better both on food and servicewise. Major praise to the bartender, Olivier, who is originally from France. He provided exceptional service and really knew the wines - all of his recommendations were spot on. We ordered the wine flight, some cheeses, the steak tartare, and beef bourguignon - WOW. everything was exceptional, but the steak tartare reminded me of my meals in Paris. The wine selection is great, and if you are lucky enough to sit when Olivier is at the bar, you'll have a great experience. Judging from this visit, I expect that the quality will hold up regardless of whether you are seated at the bar or at a table. Also a big shoutout to Jeannine, the GM - she was really attentive and engaged. We will be back soon and often!

Mimi G.

Yelp
I moved in the area recently and decided to stop by for a drink before going home. I sat at the bar and was greeted by their Sommelier so I was told. He suggested the flight, I opted for champagne/sparkling flight and cheese selection. I was definitely disappointed in the flight choices because they were flat. This wasn't up to par with what a sommelier should offer. On the other hand I was pleasantly happy with the cheese selection which included St André which is my favorite. They seem to have an excellent wine selection, cheese and menu(in French). However, the service was mediocre, the Sommelier who was also at the bar was busy taking care of a group seating on my right at the bar, filling their water, free wine sample and never bothered to ask me of my thoughts on the flight or the cheese or offer me any water any wine suggestions. It was very frustrating to see the care on my right and I have to tell someone else to help me. By the war, it's a very small bar so there's anyway to miss me especially if you are talking to someone next me.At some point one of the guy in the same group he is chatting with him had to call home because I wanted to ask him for a different wine. It put me off!! Not sure why he chose to treat me differently but it felt intentional. On the fence if I will be back, but then if I do I will definitely request someone else.
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Great place. Love the wine list and the food. Sit inside outside small or big groups.
google avatar

Alexa M.

Yelp
Have to update because I just ate here! I'd only had wine before. And I have to say the mussels a la crème were the best I've had in DC so far...even better than across the street at Le Dip! I also did a flight of white wines which was not only a great deal for the price but two of them were so, so good. I could take or leave the Riesling. This is a cute spot for a date, wine with friends, or happy hour!
google avatar

Jan S.

Yelp
Excellent personal service! We loved our menu choices. Excellent escargot & mussels- best we've ever had! And the pates were very yummy. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Julia M.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this French wine bar. The food was tasty and nicely plated, and the cheese plate was more generous than expected. However, for the price I would expect amazing service and dining experience and I did not experience that. The hostess was rushed and almost aggressive, and our service was lacking. We sat waiting for service for much of our time, and our server knew nothing about the menu. I understand it's a new restaurant but the servers seemed like they were not trained at all. We got the 3 wines and 3 cheeses tasting, a 3 meat charcuterie board, the basque tartine and mussels. They offered us a small glass of complimentary rose at the end of the meal, which was nice. I will be waiting a few months to return, hopefully they will be up and running better by then.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
I was thrilled to see that Drafting Table was gone and this new cute wine bar had popped up! Super cute and who doesn't love wine and cheese! Unfortunately, the three star rating is due to the service and lack of options for rosé. Me and my girlfriend came for happy hour because rosé's by the bottle were half off. Well what you don't know, is they only have one rosé. LOL so that makes the options easy but if you don't like that one you're screwed. For a French wine bar I find it really odd that they only have one rosé. The service, while the guy was not rude, he was not very engaging. I asked what the veg Tartine of the day was and he had to go ask the chef. It seems like there's only one "of the day" option so you would think the servers would know it. It took asking him three times before receiving the answer. In addition, we ordered three cheeses and asked what the options were and again he did not know and would have to go ask. We told him to not worry about it and just bring us three of his favorites. When the cheese arrived, he left the plate and began to walk away. I called him back and asked him what types of cheeses they were and again he did not know. This is a wine bar... Cheese is the ultimate pairing for wine... These are simple things you need to know as a server at a wine and cheese bar.

Priya L.

Yelp
Went here last night with a few friends and was very pleasantly surprised. We did a white wine flight and got some food. Good French wine selection, so it's a nice way to try out different varietals. The food was the winner. We order the trout and asparagus, shrimp, and octopus (clearly in a seafood mood) and all were cooked perfectly and great flavors. The desert - chocolate cake and the apple tart - were also great. Good service as well. Will def be back to try other things in the menu.
google avatar

Jade B.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful atmosphere and great service. They made great wine suggestions for us and the cheese board was also delish. Will certainly be going back!
google avatar

Bhavana C.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place! Got a couple glasses of wine and a cheese board. The wine was great - I do wish the server had had a little bit more detail on the ones we inquired about, but he was able to give a general sense of what it would taste like so we could choose something we'd like. The cheese board took some time to arrive, but it came with generous portions, lots of bread, and was delicious. The server gave us complimentary rose with the check which was a nice surprise. Also they're very on top of the water refills. I think they're still working out a few kinks to get things out quickly, but the wine and the cheese are great and the servers are friendly. Will be back to try the entrees!

Yelp
This is by far my favorite spot in the city. Great food, incredible wine, unparalleled service. I've never had such incredible service at a restaurant. They always take their time to ask what you like in wines and suggest new options. 11/10.

Madhvi P.

Yelp
VSV is a neighborhood gem that's slowly turned into my second kitchen because I know I'll never be disappointed with a meal. It has a great ambiance as a wine bar focused on French food and wines. The friendly and knowledgeable staff always have great pairing recommendations or suggestions on something new to try. I particularly love the escargot, which is the best I've had in DC. The French Onion soup and hanger steak are also delicious.

Doug M.

Yelp
Outstanding personal service. The staff couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. Great service, food selection, and value. Definitely my favorite dinner spot in DC. Doug

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times now and each time the experience has been excellent! I'll attribute the excellence to our wonderful server Micah, who is incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, attentive and just an overall delight. Her recommendations have become favorites and I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Great little wine bar on 14th street! Can't wait to come back again for the mac n cheese.

Yelp
good food and decent servings but very confusing and misleading menu. probably won't be coming back

For a French wine bar there are two basic expectations - a good wine list and servers who know what's on it. The wine selection was decent enough though nothing spectacular. Would be nice if they had more options by the glass. The real disappointment was the server saying"I'm just 22 and haven't really tried that many wines nor do I know much about them." At a minimum VSV should provide some basic training to its servers, even if only for the wines they are serving. Even some high level basics about France's wine regions, it grapes and their qualities would be fine. For food obviously Le Dip across the street is way better. As for wine bar, meh. We went b/c we'd been doing some shopping and wanted something quick and easy. It was a Saturday evening and we did not have reservations and they had plenty of both indoor and outdoor tables. It was fine but would not go out of our way to go there and probably would not go back. It definitely could have been better.
