The reason I'm giving this one star is that the waiter tried to rip us off. What happened was that we started out ordering drinks. He brought us a tapa -- a free tapa is very standard in Madrid. Then we decided we were hungry, and with the food, bread was bought -- very typical in all of Spain.
When we got the bill, we had been charged for the "appetizer" -- he thought we were just a couple of dumb tourists who would be too embarrassed to say something and would just pay it (even though we both speak Spanish).
They did take the charges off the bill when we said something, but the waiter said, "in 80% of the bars in Madrid they charge for for the tapa (they called it the appetizer)," which is an outright lie and I told him so.
I'm disappointed that this happened. I really like that hotel, but now I won't be back. And as I think about it, the last time I stayed at that hotel, the taxi they called for me tried to take me to the airport tried to rip me off. At the time, I thought it was the individual taxi driver that was dishonest, but now I wonder if ripping tourists off is a general theme at that hotel.
