I've had Vincent's bookmarked, but when I heard that it was closing, I immediately moved it to the top of my list so that I could try the famed kolaches while I still had the chance. I actually tried to order them during last week's Bodega Brunch, but they sold out before opening (via online orders). This week, I set an alarm, and they sold out yet again, but I was able to secure the goods before that happened.
I ordered two sausage kolaches, one sweet cheese and seasonal fruit (I think orange?) kolache, and a Red Bandana taco.
- Sausage kolache ($5): This tasted just like a Chinese hot dog bun but with a thicker sausage (sweet on the outside and salty on the inside). There was cheddar cheese inside as well, but I didn't really taste it. The bottom was also quite burnt. I liked this for the same reason I like Chinese hot dog buns, but it wasn't as mind-blowing as the reviews hyped it up to be.
- Sweet cheese and seasonal fruit kolache ($5): The consistency of the cheese was like cottage cheese. The overall taste was similar to a danish. I liked the citrus flavor from the seasonal fruit.
- Red Bandana taco ($8): Quite expensive for a single taco, but I did enjoy this the most out of what I ordered. The shrimp was plump and crispy, and the hollandaise sauce added a delicious creaminess. Not sure what the sauce on the side was (maybe salsa?), but it was sweet. I liked the sauce, but the taco was fine on its own. However, the flour tortilla was soggy and lackluster. I wanted to substitute for a corn tortilla but forgot to do so in my mad dash to secure a kolache.
Overall, it was a solid lunch, although on the pricier side (there was also an additional 10% fair wage surcharge even on take-out orders). I regret not ordering the chicken on a biscuit during yesterday's final Friday takeout lunch, but it sounds like the team behind Vincent's has future plans for this space, so I look forward to seeing those unravel.
