Where to Warm Up With Hearty Bowls of Soup in Nashville - Eater Nashville

"Tucked into a strip mall on Murfreesboro Pike, Vihn-Long doles out mighty fine Vietnamese fare, but what locals best know it for is the beef and carrot stew, a hearty brick-red melange of thickly-sliced carrots, hunks of meat, and a bright smattering of crisp veg on top. Pair it with Vietnamese coffee for a warming one-two punch during cooler months." - Ashley Brantley, Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

Wow! This place has some of the best tasting food and fantastic staff! The portion sizes are great and the prices are even better. Just remember to bring cash.

Concierge Ride TN

Google
This is where the Locals eat. Looks like a Dive, Cash Only but they make the best Beef Stew. Sweet Tea is great, but be prepared to take a nap 😴😂

Google
CASH ONLY CASH ONLY! There's nothing wrong with that, but just know to bring cash. Authentic place and the atmosphere feel like I am eating in Saigon. The food is okay, something I would like to recommend to a friend if they are in the mood for something different other than mexican food (which I noticed driving by nothing but mexican restaurants). Give it a go if vietnamese food is what you're craving. [:

Amazing pho even though we got it to go. Staff was super nice and great atmosphere

Google
My husband told me this place was incredible, and I can’t speak for the phõ (which is what I guess is amazing) because the vermicelli bowl was overpriced and not satisfying at all. $20.70 for this vermicelli bowl. So if you go - don’t get vermicelli.

Stopped in for dinner and selected special pho. The broth is refined and fresh, most notable were the beef balls, which were delicious and better than other pho shops I’ve been to. Knocked down a star for a little slow service, but the food was worth the wait.

Google
The food here was really good. I think I liked the broth more than my local pho place, but the noodles were not as good; I prefer the flat style rice noodles. The grilled squid was good, so were the spring rolls. I found it interesting that they are playing Luke Martin on YouTube, on repeat, on two different televisions. Overall it was a great stop and I would come back. Be aware they are cash only.

Google
Vinh-Long is a pretty tight place with little space between the walkways and very packed during the lunch hour. Despite that, we were seated quickly and our food came out pretty fast! The pho was piping hot and very delicious, with many meat toppings, making it more flavorful. It was a great bang for your buck. The Banh Mi Bo Kho was also nice and had a sweet, tomatoey broth. Overall, it was very filling and the service was nice. I definitely recommend this place for all pho lovers! *This place is cash only, and I most definitely failed to read that, but that’s ok. Luckily there was an ATM nearby…*

Yelp
Small "mom and pop" place but very clean and service was fast. The man was very friendly and I would say this was Best pho I've had in a while very tasty the broth was hardy and the tempura was crispy and light and the sauce with it was really good . 10/10 They have different sizes bowls (small, medium, large) you can choose from and a large bowl was HUGE I got a medium and still was able to take some home the prices are good to for what you get. Most definitely will be back.

Yelp
So so happy we found this place! Very authentic!! Got the meatball pho and it was clean and very flavorful! We also got the egg rolls and spring rolls, both good! Service was great!

Yelp
On my recent visit to Vinh Long on a busy Sunday afternoon (3/10/24), As one of the long-standing Vietnamese restaurants still graced by its original owners, it truly stands as a pillar in the local culinary landscape. Despite it being a packed house at 1 pm, the staff were able to seat us after a brief 5-minute wait. The service was prompt and attentive right from the start, with menus and a courteous inquiry for our drink orders arriving in no time. The menu featured a diverse assortment of authentic Vietnamese fare, along with a selection of Japanese dishes and a delightful variety of Vietnamese desserts--all offered at very reasonable prices. My order included the Pho Special, Com Suon Bi Cha Trung, and Goi Cuon, each of which was a delightful surprise in terms of flavor and quality. The Goi Cuon (Spring Rolls) were notably fresh, brimming with vermicelli and mixed vegetables, and perfectly paired with a savory house hoisin sauce. The Com Suon Bi Cha Trung (White Rice with Shredded Pork, Egg Quiche, Pork Chop, and Fried Egg) was a symphony of textures and tastes--tender pork chop, perfectly cooked shredded pork, a tasty egg quiche, and a fried egg done just to my liking. The Pho Special was a comforting bowl with a richly flavored broth and an ample serving of meats, though the accompanying vegetables and herbs were somewhat scant. However, the staff was more than willing to provide extra upon request. Vinh Long, while compact, operates with a team that moves swiftly to ensure a pleasant dining experience for all. Ample parking is available in the lot, which is always a plus. It's worth noting that this cash-only establishment. Initially, there was a fleeting, odd scent upon entry, reminiscent of an older building, but it quickly dissipated, allowing the aromas of delicious food to take over. In summary, my experience at Vinh Long was filled with the warmth of nostalgia and reinforced by delicious food, friendly service, and swift delivery. It's clear that the restaurant continues to uphold its reputation, making it a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Yelp
I dined at Vinh-Long on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at 1 pm. I had a less than ideal experience here. Even though the menu offers a good variety of mostly Vietnamese and some Japanese dishes at affordable prices, I felt that there was a lot to be desired in the quality.... To the point that I'd rather pay more for better quality bowl of pho. Walking into the small establishment, it felt very tight and almost claustrophobic. The tables were close together so you're almost sharing a table with everyone seated around you. The restaurant also smelled musty as soon as I walked in. My bowl of pho was below average. The broth was very cloudy, which is a sign that the impurities were not properly removed. At the end of the meal, the cloudiness had separated and settled to the bottom, which was off putting. The broth tasted like it looked, imbalanced and under-seasoned. I had only 3 small meatballs in my medium size bowl, and I thought that was stingy. 3 larger size beef balls would have sufficed. The beef balls were soft in texture, which I guess that is the cheaper type of beef balls. The sliced flank tasted fine. The tray of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeño to supplement the pho was pitiful. I had to ask for more and I got a second plate of the same quantity. All the basil leaves had black spots on it. As this establishment is cash only, I think that would be a slight inconvenience for some folks. Also, it can get busy during peak hours, so expect some wait. The establishment seems to have a fast turnover so, I would not expect to wait long. Overall, I think if you want some place cheap with a variety of average food, this place is for you.

Yelp
OMG I can't stop coming to this spot!! The pho is flavorful, the rice was delicious, and this was some of the best gyoza I've had to date. I didn't care for the thai tea but to each their own! The hours are a bit funny, and you do need cash to order but it's so worth it. The servers are always so kind and helpful, and you get a true family feel while you're inside. If you do have to wait for a table, I'd suggest going to do a lil quick shopping at the shop next door!

Yelp
Love this place! So convenient to my house, I can literally walk there on nice days. The wait staff is so friendly and the food is so delicious! Cash only but sooo worth it! Limited seating but they offer fast takeout.

Yelp
I haven't been here in years just cause my schedule doesn't workout with their hours. They close pretty early and it's closed on Mondays. As we walked in, I noticed they did some upgrades but I definitely feel like there's more they can do, like get a new kitchen door. It looked like it's been kicked to death and I didn't want to use their restroom. I always go for the beef stew, the meat wasn't as tender, but the stew was still good. Got the pork chop plate togo. The pork chop was thin but it had good flavor to it. I still hate that it's cash only but, hey it works for them. I'm glad they're still around since 2002!

Yelp
After spending a delightful week exploring Nashville and enjoying a diverse array of local cuisine, our culinary curiosity led us to seek out some delicious Vietnamese fare for a change of taste. We stumbled upon Vĩnh Long restaurant, conveniently located just a brief 10-minute drive from downtown Nashville. Nestled within a small shopping mall boasting ample parking spaces, this hidden gem offers a menu that caters to both Vietnamese and Japanese palates. Upon our visit, we indulged in several bowls of Pho, and they exceeded our expectations with their remarkable flavor and freshness. Having hailed from the DC area, where authentic Vietnamese cuisine is cherished, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Vĩnh Long's offerings measured up admirably. The attentive and friendly service only enhanced our dining experience. In sum, we wholeheartedly recommend Vĩnh Long to anyone seeking an authentic and delightful Vietnamese culinary adventure while in Nashville.

Yelp
Best Pho in Nashville. We're here so often they know our order by heart. There's not much more I can say. If you like pho you have to go here. Btw it's a hole in the wall but that just means it's going to be good.

Yelp
My favorite spot in town for authentic Vietnamese food! Just a heads up though, it is cash only.

William W.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite restaurant for pho out of anywhere. I travel across the entire United States for my living, and I have only found a small handful of places that compare. I actually have mixed feelings writing this review as I feel this place is one of the best kept secrets there is in Nashville, and if too many others find out how good it actually is, I may not be able to have pho there anymore as their seating is very limited. I go to Vinh-Long at least twice a month, and even though the ambiance is humble the service and food is some of the best. Family owned and operated, cash only.

Yelp
I had this meal ordered as a To-Go so don't have pics. I was really looking forward to a great meal reading the reviews but was sorely disappointed. I had ordered a pint of Pho Broth, Shrimp shumai and the No 45 Lemongrass Chicken Rice and made sure to request NO SALAD but got salad. The broth was still hot (which is why this is a 2 star instead of 1* I'm really trying to be generous) but it was soooo bland. For a minute I actually wondered if I might have covid bcos this was the blandest broth I've ever tasted in my life! The shumai was soggy and the 4 tiniest mini pieces. Based on the food, $3.25 is overpriced for the taste and quantity. But the greatest regret was the Lemongrass Chicken. It tasted more like a Ginger chicken but there was not a hint of lemongrass and not even 1 tiny shred of lemongrass! For a second I considered that maybe I received someone else's order but the other 2 items (shumai and broth) were packaged together so it couldn't have been. I love Lemongrass Chicken and get it often from another Vietnamese restaurant on Charlotte so I know what it is supposed to taste like and this was the most disappointing experience. PS - I am negative and don't have covid so can't explain the bland taste

Yelp
Some of the best pho in the city!!! This little restaurant is so good. I went during lunch and it was crowded for a to go order. The wait was pretty sick but because of the size of the restaurant they gave me a pager and told me to wait outside in my car. Once I got home with my food everything was packaged perfectly. The pho itself was well seasoned and tasted amazing!!!! The egg rolls were average. But they so be my new neighborhood pho restaurant
google avatar

Peggy C.

Yelp
Stopped by here for pho. We ordered their beef stew with carrots and noodles and a side of French bread and it was so good! The beef stew is tender and soft and the soup tasted so good! This is a hidden gem!!! Moreover, bring cash, please this place is cash only!

Benjamin H.

Yelp
My favorite Vietnamese place in Nashville. I have never had a bad experience. Everything is always excellent. The owner is always there, and he is working hard to make sure everything is perfect. I can't say enough nice things about this restaurant. The restaurant is always spotless and smells amazing.
google avatar

Thommy S.

Yelp
My go to spot for pho. It can get pretty packed here. I don't think there was ever a time where I went and it wasn't packed. I think the people here are pretty nice, also. I like it here because they're the only ones I know that still actually do the drip coffee. (Iced coffee) Pretty much, you wait til the coffee drips, stir it with the condensed milk, then add it to your cup of ice. I don't think I've ever tried anything here that I didn't like. As far as their pho goes, it's pretty good. The broth has a good flavor going and I think from the noodles to meats, it's a pretty good amount in your bowl. When you're done, just walk up to the counter and pay! :)

Yelp
On Sunday, May 19 2024 and this is my first time driving to Nashville all the way from Knoxville by myself without my parents for my after high school graduation celebration. So I was driving from my home in Knoxville to Nashville to drive this restaurant for a high school graduation celebration. Once I arrived to the restaurant for the first time, I went in there wait until the server tell me where to sit at the table as soon he give me the menu the menu said cash only but this whole time I was caring only a credit card at the time and I asked him. I only have a credit card payment and I said I'm not from here in Nashville Said to go to the Walgreens store to withdraw money at the ATM machine so I walk out of his restaurant to walk to a Walgreens store and to go to the ATM machine to withdraw $20 out of the ATM machine then later walk back to restaurant to dine in. Because I did not realize this restaurant only take cash payment only when I drive far away from home to go to a restaurant store as three hours away from home. when I only carry a credit card on me this whole time and I wish I called them sooner. They take credit card payment, but it's not my fault. Because I did not know that they only take cash only at their food establishment restaurant. Because I only carry a credit card on me nowadays because I don't carry cash no more in a day when I was in elementary middle school kids. I might not coming back here again. This is my first and last time coming here because what happened if somebody don't live in Nashville driving all the way up from a different city or state and they did not realize this restaurant only take cash when people don't really carry Cash these days when they only carry credit card nowadays because I wish this restaurant credit card payment as well so people don't have to walk to a Walgreen store to withdraw Cash just for them to eat there or order carry out. And I have to leave them a $2 tip because they bring my food and drink to the table. I wish I shouldn't leave them a two dollar tip because I have to walk out of their restaurant because they tell me to walk to the nearby Walgreens store to go to an ATM machine to withdraw $20 in cash just for me to eat there to enjoy my lunch. I wish they have a website they only accept cash only. Then I left and I might be not coming back here plus I live far away from this restaurant 2 to 3 hours away from this restaurant and I'm not coming back. That's only thing I don't like but food is taste delicious and drink as well and I am a Vietnamese person as well and I asked my Vietnamese parents. why is this new modern generation does a restaurant does not accept credit card nowadays? And my Vietnamese dad tell me American people don't really carry cash nowadays they owe me Carrie credit card. My dad tell me.. so I agree with him because don't accept credit card payment this modern generation it's not like it's like a 1977 it's 2024. Why does this Vietnamese restaurant do not take credit card payment. I believe they don't take credit card payment because they have to pay like every transaction fee that made.. they only take cash. so I will be going to a different Vietnamese restaurant if I ever come back to Nashville because I wanna test out this restaurant if it's good or not the food is OK but the payment no cash payment. Because I only carry credit card I don't carry cash.. so I have to say.

Yelp
The pho, spring rolls, and udon soup that I've tried here were fantastic. The real highlight for me is the agedashi seasoned deep fried tofu. It's got some delicious big flavors and good textures. The salted lemonade is also good, but on the smallish serving size. Cash only. Nice little hidden gem.
google avatar

Jacqueline L.

Yelp
I've been dying to find a good pho spot in Nashville for a while and I have finally found it! It's cash only. Their pho is super flavorful and aromatic. The location is fairly small with limited seating and on the weekends there can be a wait for a table but it is worth it! Also, there are some smaller snacks and desserts that they sell near the register. Definitely check them out!
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
Always great! On our regular list of "go to" places for lunch. Perfect location near my husbands work. Space is small but def worth the wait for a table. When we walk in, the owner already knows our order. We share a Large bowl of Pho and a side order of fresh rolls. The dipping sauce is the best!
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Amazing food and service . Portions were good and they didn't skimp on anything. I had the pho Thai large extra meat and almost couldn't eat it all.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Wow we got lucky finding this place! The Pho was amazing, egg rolls delicious too& the staff super helpful! We'll definitely be back :)
google avatar

EV W.

Yelp
A absolute must in Nashville. Very friendly service and delicious food! My partner and I loved the Hủ Tíu Bò Kho!
google avatar

Mai L.

Yelp
This place is small so the wait for a table is long and sits randomly in the middle nowhere if you would think it is in a Chinatown or little Saigon. It isn't so if you take a Lyft/Uber here...good luck. You will have to wait it thru to get a table since you can't take a ride back out again til done eating. Food tasted okay. Nothing special. And they only give you what they think is enough according to them..such as bean sprouts or veggies. You have to ask for it. Pho wasn't as good. I would not come back since the wait is too long due to their small space and no other available substitution nearby. I did not take any pictures because I lost my cool after waiting too long for a table and food was missing veggies and etc.

Kenzi W.

Yelp
Amazing. Authentic. Top tier customer service. The perfect hole in the wall hidden gem
google avatar

CJ H.

Yelp
The Vietnamese beef stew is out of this world! And there homemade French bread is on point.

Nhi M.

Yelp
This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in nashville. The food is so good and service is always friendly. It's very small inside but I've never had an issue getting seated and food comes out pretty fast so people aren't lingering. Try their Bun Riêu or the Bo Kho (beef stew) it's the best in town
google avatar

Caroline G.

Yelp
This is my favorite Vietnamese place in Nashville hands down. The prices are amazing and it is absolutely spotless. All ingredients are the freshest. Staff is super friendly. Had to try a little bit of everything because it's all so good. This place is cash only but that adds to its authentic flair. I will be back again and again.
google avatar

Lynn H.

Yelp
Beef pho was exactly what I needed and wanted. Typical mom and pop pho restaurant that makes you feel at home. Be warned that it's cash only.
google avatar

Maygan N.

Yelp
Always such a great experience at Vinh-Long. This is my go to spot every week and I've got to say, this place is the most consistent when it comes to their dishes. My regular meal always consist of their beef stew, which is just immaculate and so comforting. My boyfriend always opts for the seafood noodle soup with dumplings, and you seriously cannot go wrong. Love the family dynamic of this spot. If you are looking for a Vietnamese/Japanese spot in Nashville, this is the place to go. Do keep in mind that this place is CASH ONLY, which isn't a huge deal since there is a Walgreens near by!
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
It was cool finding a Vietnamese restaurant out here in Nashville. It is located in a strip mall with a huge parking lot. Parking will never be an issue. The employees were very friendly when I entered and made sure that I got a seat right away. They have a nice menu with all kinds of different Vietnamese and Chinese food items. Interestingly enough, their menu included some Japanese cuisine items as well. I ordered a Medium Regular Bowl pho and it was a nice-sized portion. I'm glad I didn't get the large because I wouldn't have finished it. It comes with tripe, tendon, flank, meatballs, and eye of round. I really liked the broth. With pho, it's all about the broth. If it's not good, then the rest of the stuff in the broth will not be good. I could have had this broth on its own without any seasonings. They were generous in the ingredients and I definitely did not have any complaints. If my travels take me back to Nashville, I will definitely come back here.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
It might be my favorite PHO spot this side of the Mississippi! Go here! You won't regret it!

Andrew R.

Yelp
Beef and carrot stew. If you know you know. Cash only. Quick service. Quaint. Well priced.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
If you like vietnamese food, this place does not disappoint. In fact, it exceeded our expectations. We ordered to share: 1) special pho, 2) beef stew noodle, 3) egg rolls, 4) porkchop on rice, 5) iced viet coffee My most favorites were the special pho, beef stew noodle and the iced viet coffee. The egg rolls were so-so, and not worth ordering. The pork chop on rice was good but the pork chop was not that tender.
google avatar

Thomas A.

Yelp
This spot is legit. Best pho I've had since Oriental Express in the Boro closed. Their beef stew on a chilly day is THE comfort food. I really enjoy that they make their own chili sauce. Cash only, but that isn't an issue, because they're very wallet friendly.

John W.

Yelp
Cash only... that should say it all. It's not fusion. I believe one of the best Vietnamese places in Nashville.
google avatar

Vina K.

Yelp
Place said it was open till 7 got to the blaze at 5:30ish and the doors was Locked came all the way from Smyrna . call before you come
google avatar

April P.

Yelp
I ordered a special Phó with extra broth. It was plenty of meat and vegetables. I'm glad to see that the rare steak is wrapped separately. The broth is nice and light very flavorful. There's also plenty of meat and vegetables I made 2 meals out of my order large order. My only complaint is that's the meat is a little fatty but that's fine coz its flavor lol . Next time I'm going to try the beef stew! Also on Saturday, they have specials rice cakes they are delicious I recommend trying one.
google avatar

Jin L.

Yelp
Little joint but probably the best Pho in Nashville. If you dont like southeast asian spices smell, not a good place for u. Place is very small and it is full with smell of spices. One bad thing is - "only cash". Who carries cash these days...
google avatar

Christine E.

Yelp
Excellent and delicious are two adjectives that easily apply to the food here. Tried the beef and carrot stew (bo kho) because of all the rave reviews and it lived up to the expectations. The beef comes in large pieces but is easily pulled apart because of how tender it is. The same applies to the carrots. You do get a lot of food for your money. The small was large enough for me to have leftovers for later (yum!). Two things to keep in mind when coming here 1) cash only 2) limited seating - there are only ~15 small tables so you may have to wait. Not sure if they are willing to combine tables for a large party.
google avatar

Eric A.

Yelp
Loved this place 5 years ago - recently moved back.... still delicious! The Bo Kho is amazing, pho great. Value for price is excellent. Might be farther out than other Vietnamese restaurants - but totally worth it. Places on Charlotte can be good - but the beef and carrot stew alone is worth the drive.

Yelp
Let's start this off right: STEW!!! If you are anywhere near Nashville you owe it to yourself to have lunch at Vinh-Long. It's the very definition of hole-in-the-wall and it is amazing. Plan on arriving early if you want a table quickly and make sure you have cash, as they don't accept anything else. Once you've sat down at one of the eight or nine tables in the place don't bother with the menu, just order STEW, not Pho or anything else, just Stew. You can get small, medium or large, I would recommend medium unless you are super hungry. I've never had anything else like it and if you go and don't try it then you've failed at lunch. It's that simple. STEW!!!
google avatar

Barbara W.

Yelp
I visited this place in the spring early on, like February. I thought it was by happenstance, but it was definitely an intentional find. The food was so good and the service was great. I even ordered take out for later. I am meeting friends there on Sunday for dinner. I tell you the food is wonderful.

Nick F.

Yelp
My new favorite place! The food here is amazing and the service is great as well. Do note that this is cash only so make sure you come prepared. Although it is a smaller resturant the ceiling is very high making the whole place feel much more roomy/cozy. I recommend this place to everyone and always take people who are visiting from out of town.
google avatar

Miguel R.

Yelp
The ambiance at this restaurant makes you feel relaxed and as if you're dining in the comfort of your own home. The service was phenomenal and our waiter made sure we had everything we needed and that our cups were never empty. The Chicken Pho was amazing and I highly recommend it!!

Yelp
Had bun Rieu + pho. Was great and savory! Great customer service. Accidentally came early before they opened but they still served us! Would highly recommend.

Yelp
My husband and I really tried to stay away from asian food during our trip to Nashville but it was toooo difficult! We completely gave in and had to scope out a restaurant for some pho because we were craving soup sooo much. At the time of our search for pho, we found ourselves keep cycling back to Vinh Long's yelp page. Customers were not only raving about their beef carrot stew (bo kho), but they were raving about the restaurant's pho. But really the main reason why we ended up choosing Vinh Long was because it was extremely close to where we were staying. Anyway! When we got there, we both knew we had to get pho. My husband ordered the special large pho bowl and I got a medium pho tai bo vien ("eye of round" steak and beef balls). When we got our bowls, it smelled sooo good! The broth was at a perfect temperature and it tasted delicious. It wasn't heavy nor did it taste like we were eating a bowl full of MSG. The noodles however were a little overcooked for both of us, but that did not stop us from enjoying our meal. I mean, it was so good that my husband ate everything and slurped up his entire bowl. Overall, we both think Vinh Long's pho is like mom's kitchen pho! *Tip: CASH only! And we didn't see any dipping dishes available for us to use at our table. We just used our garnishes plate but I am sure you can ask them for a dipping dish!

Yelp
This small family owned Vietnamese restaurant is one of my favorite places for pho. I've been coming to this place for years and it never disappoints. The food is delicious and the people who work there are also super friendly. We had the pho special with the rare beef on the side along with the wonton egg noodle soup with meat and meatballs. Both soups have the perfect flavor broth and I always switch back and forth from the two soups. For an appetizer, we ordered the shrimp tempura which is always perfectly fried each time along with the shrimp and pork spring roll. This place is CASH ONLY so don't forget to grab some cash before you go.

Erica L.

Yelp
Highly recommend!! Best pho in town no competition! The steak is amazing. Also loved the quick service and authenticity. Coming here as much as possible from now on!
