Madeira, Portugal, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene | Eater

"A long-established, traditionally minded espetada house that prides itself on ceremony and presentation—tables come with wrought-metal stands for hanging skewers, and the skewers are served with polished versions of the classic accompaniments such as deep-fried polenta cubes, garlicky bread and crisp salad." - Austin Bush

15 Best Bars in Madrid

"Forget the frou-frou wine bars of France—Vinoteca Vides is hell-bent on making wine an everyman's drink. The dressed-down digs—think chalked menus, wooden high-tops, and sausages hanging behind the bar—may make you wonder whether these guys know their stuff, but one look at the 125-bottle roster, and you'll be sold. Even the most jaded sommeliers will find something new on the wine list, which spans 72 Spanish wine-producing areas and 65 grape varieties." - Benjamin Kemper

Google
Fabulous experience here. Visited this establishment with 4 friends on a rainy day, had olives cheese and wines. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Ended up buying a few bottles, definitely recommend stopping here for some Spanish wine with some knowledgeable help from the staff!

The best thing is the owner. Charming and attentive to your tastes so that you feel comfortable and at ease with the food and a spectacular wine cellar. Just seeing the display case is a must-see. I recommend that you arrive with the intention of trying and enjoying. Your senses, olfactory, gustatory and sensorial, will have a great time.

Google
A place of wine culture, opened with the goal of providing really great and diverse wines by the glass. Drink yourself through 200 different wines, 68 grapes and 72 D.O. regions in Spain. Enjoy tapas of high quality, which are enough to replace dinner. The atmosphere is vibrant, a little crowded, but not too loud. The service is very attentive and can give you great advise on the wines served. Aperitif or whole night, this place is a must visit if you like wine! Opening hours on Google Maps are wrong. Opens at 17:00 every day.

Google
Absolutely incredible wine bar! The owner took the time to ask about my preferences and recommended wines that matched my taste perfectly – every single one was spot on. The prices are more than fair, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. If you appreciate great wine and genuine hospitality, this place is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
An unforgettable experience with exceptional wine and even better tapas (you need to try the pheasant). Vicente the owner is passionate and knowledgeable around all the wines so please let him recommend a bottle and enjoy you stay at this little gem of a wine bar

Google
One of the best experiences we had here in Madrid. Staff are extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Atmosphere is amazing and the bar is not too crowded. We had an excellent selection of wines and small tapas. Would very highly recommend - we will be coming back soon!

We spent a lovely evening here with my husband. We had no reservation, so in the beginning we were just standing at the bar, but after 15min we got the opportunity to sit down. (Note: if you want to take a seat, it is kind of expected to also eat something, for us it was fine, just info for the others.) The wines were exceptional, also the prices are a bit higher than other places, but I would say it’s worth it, it’s a kind of little treasure place for wine geeks :) The snacks we ordered also were very tasty. Staff is kind (esspecially the Italian guy) and speaks English. Only little disappointment was the take-away price of a bottle of wine we felt like to take, because it was not cheaper than you order the bottle on the place, so in the end we decided not to buy it. But overall it is a cozy place with nice athomsphere and high quality of drinks and food.

Yelp
Possibly our highlight of our 4 days in Madrid. As a big fan of Spanish wines, I let our hosts recommend the wines to accompany our amazing selection of Spanish cheeses (and the olive oil was amazing as well), and all were amazing.. The wine list is entrely Spanish wines and our hosts did a great job telling us about the wines. Very impressed and would definitely make another trip here if we find ourselves in Madrid again.

Yelp
One of my favorite tapas bars we went to! Very knowledgeable about the local wines and we were able to try several amazing options. The tapas were good as well. Will come back.

Yelp
The best. Great wine. Welcoming service. Delicious food. We come hear nearly every day for something small but great.

Yelp
Excellent local hotspot that serves nothing but Spanish wines, delicious local cheese and ham (always ask for jamon negro, it's the highest quality). Even though most places in Madrid don't get busy until at least 8:30 PM this place has a small local crowd happening as early as 530. The owner serves fantastic regional, spanish wines, is quite knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend the wine connoisseurs of the world swing by this place for a great glass of wine and some lovely tapas to go with it.

Yelp
Loved this spot!!! Can't say enough great things about this wine bar. Popped in for a few drinks with friends and ended up staying half the night. Owners were so friendly and knowledgeable about all the wines offered. You can tell wine is their passion! Vides is great because you get to try delicious wines and enjoy the small plates offered in a casual environment. It's not stuffy or pretentious at all which we loved. Very reasonably priced as well. I would highly recommend checking them out!

Yelp
Great vibe. The waiters were very knowledgeable! We went in there with an open mind. Our only request was that we drink red wind and have a few things to snack on. The guys were on point. Def seems to be local spot

Yelp
A tavern for wine drinkers in a wine drinkers paradise. This place has the late night feel of a college bar, without the frat boys. It's packed, it's loud, it's cozy, and it's super fun. The owner is very proud of his selection of the best wines and will not steer anyone wrong. The waiters make the evening feel like all the guests are sitting in our friends kitchen just trying out different wines. Stack from floor to ceiling with wines, you will find the wine you are looking for. People from all over the world were there the night we went, USA, Venezuela, Germany, Amsterdam, Spain, South Africa.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this place. The bartender made excellent wine recommendations and the tapas options were fabulous.

Yelp
Very good place for our first evening in Madrid. Waiters are friendly and very good tip. I recommand the plate of cheese (careful to the strong one as I am French it just killed me!) and the tomatoe one. Still expensive thought. I took a red wine I didn't know exclusively Spanish and I was c'very surprised. I recommand this place it should be known by all people who wants to have a good wine experience.

Yelp
Amazing wine with even better staff! All recommendations were perfect. Lots of options for tapas as well, highly recommended

Yelp
I stumbled onto this place looking for a beer bar nearby. 3 glasses of red later, it was one of my favorite stops in Madrid. The waiter took very good care of me, he pointed out on the map where every wine was from that I tried. When the bill came no wine was more then 6 euro. Had a great plate of cheese as well. Highly recommend as a stop if you are in this neighborhood.

Yelp
Quite the wine bar with great tapas, selextions chalked on the wall , and an impressive selection of Spanish wines. We had glasses of recommended Grenacha with olives gratis and ordered a Spanish tortilla con papas and chorizo. Friendly, cozy and clearly a favorite on the Calle de Libertad. We'll be back.

Yelp
This has been the best place to enjoy the best quality wines of España. The selection and quality is far superior to any place I've tasted unless going to the actual vineyard. Vicente, the owner is very knowledgeable of all his wines and will personally tell you about each wine you're tasting. The best part is, ultra reserves wines are opened once a week for the same price as lowered end wine tasting. For 8 euros you can taste reserved wines. You cannot go wrong with that. The next time I'm back in Madrid, I'll come back here.

Yelp
Loved loved loved this wine bar! Vincent, the owner and winemaker, was so helpful and so much fun sharing his wines with us. We ended up with three bottles to take home. Definitely recommend to anyone interested in trying a few spanish wines without leaving the city!

Yelp
This was the best place ever. Service and tapas were excellent. And I met so many nice people. As tapas bars should be. Muchas gracias!

Yelp
If you are unable or simply don't want to participate in one of the city tours, go here to try different wines! They cost slightly more per cup than they do at the average tapas bar, but this is no average place. You're paying for the wealth of knowledge that the owner will share about any of the wines on their extensive list. You will find out the region, the type of grape, you name it! For example, we were told a lot about just one red wine I had. It came from a winery in Salamanca that is so close to Portugal you can see it from the vineyard! That's the kind of knowledge you can get about each wine you try. They also have a variety of tapas that you can pair with your wine. The shop is a short walk away from the main street, and it is small but comfortable. There were several tables, and it gets pretty busy in the evening with a mix of locals and non-locals (tourists and possibly new residents from other countries). We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. It's totally worth a visit!

Yelp
We love this place, bartenders are awesome! So knowledgeable and helpful. We tried so many wines and cheeses. We stayed close by and made it our nightly stop, so fun!

Yelp
Una más y nos vamos.....! One more and we go! We were here at Vides last year around the same time while vacationing and had a great time tasting Vides wines. Last night was we went back and were not disillusioned. To my opinion this Wine Bar has the best and most selection of wines in Madrid. I had visited many wine bars in Madrid during my travels and This one is the most complete! Vicente Vides, the owner has known about wines since he was born. He grew up on his family vineyard here is Spain and knows his wines very well. The best Petit Verdot from Castilla La Mancha can be found here.- (Mainetes) and he has many more that are also excellent! We had it last year and came back for a glass of it last night. I recommend that if you come to Madrid, you make a stop here, Vides Vinoteca , Calle Libertad 12 Barrio Chueca, Madrid! Besides, while doing some research on his place I found he is on the top 5 Vinotecas in Madrid. Again, to my opinion, this one is the best! If you don't know what to drink, he will help you choose according to your interest and taste. I am looking forward to visit Vides again on my next trip to Madrid! 125 wines 62 grapes and 72 regions! Ole!

Yelp
Fun spot that is happening at 10pm. Vincent - the owner is great. Not sure how he handles the crowd with only 2 people. He says Rioja is for tourists. Get the cheese plate - it's ample for 6. If you order the Rioja he blesses himself. Place is lots of fun.
