Petoskey’s Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes | Eater Detroit

"The Inn at Bay Harbor, which opened in 1998 just four miles west of downtown Petoskey, feels like it’s always been there. The resort mirrors San Diego’s historic Hotel del Coronado, an iconic property that dates to the late 1800s—the same vintage as the dawn of Petoskey tourism. For those who didn’t nab a room, booking a table at the Vintage Chophouse is another great way to experience this stunning hotel. The menu offers something for many appetites such as the burger that comes with truffle jack cheese and Vidalia onion jam and the 20-ounce bone-in cowboy ribeye. Don’t miss the wine list — which includes two different vertical offerings. Vintage has seating indoors and outdoors, as well as cocktails to-go for those who just want to wander the docks, which are home to some of the most jaw-dropping yachts this side of southern California." - Stacey Brugeman

Google
Matthew made our summer dinner experience over the top!! He is the BEST waiter you MUST ask for him.. the lamb chops are so tasty!! Matthew gave us the attention & straitened out issues we had prior to dining. He is personable the best waiter I have ever had in 59 years! No joke!! Thank you Matthew!!!

Google
should've known when we walked in this place was risky. The restaurant was half full during peak season. Service is very slow and Staff quality is not what it should be for a place this expensive. When you charge $75 for a steak you should be treated as an honored guest. Took forever to get a drink order in, then couldn't find the wine we ordered, then they didn't have any wine glasses available for us to drink the wine. Really? Nobody's steak was cooked to order. Salads were fine short rib was fine. To top it off, we had a table of eight and a mandatory 20% gratuity was added which we were not informed of. 15% was taken off our tab because they knew it was a very bad night for them. Did we get visited by the restaurant manager to smooth things over? Of course not. Whoever manages this restaurant needs to be replaced.

Google
Vintage Chophouse is inside the Inn at Bay Harbor. We didn't stay at the hotel, just found them on Google and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed. The restaurant is very small but doesn't feel cramped. Breathtaking view of the lake, and in summer, the view from the outside patio would be stunning. We had tomato soup as a starter. It had balsamic and olive oil in it, which was something new for us and quite cozy and inviting, especially with the asiago sourdough bread. I had the tenderloin pappardelle, and my husband had the seafood pappardelle. Both were absolutely delicious. We couldn't decide between the brown betty apple and the flourless torte for dessert, so naturally, we got both. I was blown away by the torte, so smooth and rich. The bourbon caramel apple dish was amazing and just the right dessert for a blustery fall day. Andrew, our server, was personable and attentive. It was a fantastic experience. We will be back.

Google
Beautiful location, fantastic views a little dated in the restaurant. Food was fresh and OK. Service was very good pasta was homemade, which was the best of the meal, although the steak was not cooked properly nor was the seafood.

Google
Great views and wonderful food. Took me a bit to write the review, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. The staff was attentive to all of our needs. The food was so good that it was hard to stop eating. Will definitely return.

Google
Great dining experience along with an amazing sunset view! Food was exceptional. Highly recommend the Wild Mushroom Flatbread appetizer. Wild Mushroom Bisque was fantastic. Filet was perfect with the Mushroom Ragout and Demi-Glaze. Entire Staff was attentive and pleasant. Our server, Andrew, did a great job!

Google
We came during the week and the car was packed but we pretty much had the place to ourselves. I am a Brussel Sprouts girl, whenever it’s on the menu I order it and this one was too soggy. The glaze was watering down my Brussel sprouts. Not the best but had potential- I got the braised short ribs and left none to spare; well cooked and full of flavor. My 3 year old got tenders and fries for families who need to bring their kids. Husband got the burger and everyone told him to get it. Someone randomly, the front desk, the valet and so the hype was high- it was just okay. Overall we enjoyed our time but everything was just okay. My Braised short Ribs were the absolute best! Oh and let me add I debated on the Lamb Pops but wanted more than 3 so I choose the Braised short Ribs instead.

Google
Food was good, the views were excellent, but the wait staff leaves something to be desired. After 5 minutes we were finally seated, the host said we snuck up on him, I'll give him that as a large wedding party was in the lobby. So I'll excuse that. We were seated and menus were given to us, our drink order was placed and drinks arrived. Then we waited and waited and waited to place our food order. We almost walked out of the restaurant, the host saw us looking around and came and took our order. The follow up from the waiter was lacking, checked on us once. For the price we paid and the location the restaurant is located, definitely expected more. I will not go back, alot of other places in Petoskey to eat at..

Yelp
Great food, service, wine list and atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to try if you have never been here before.

Yelp
So my boyfriend and I were super excited to try this restaurant. We'd heard great things about it. So we made a reservation for Friday night. The wine list was good. We started with the tomato soup which was really rich and delicious. The one pound twice baked potatoes were amazing and my steak was cooked well. Why the three stars you ask? Service. It was horrendous. Our server did not introduce herself and was very unfriendly. She disappeared after she brought our wine and did not check in on us. She never asked us how our food was and left as soon as the steaks hit the table. She absolutely never came back. She was also rude to my boyfriend when he tried to ask questions about the menu. We had to flag down another server for more wine. We also had to find someone to bring us the check. It was dismal to say the least. And the bill was over $300 for two. For that price we expected better service. There are so many other nice places around Petoskey to eat. Don't waste your money here.

Yelp
Restaurant in the hotel. Not a lot of seating though so reservations are a must This place is so good we actually stopped in here 2x for dinner and one time to just hang out at the bar. The food is so good and bartenders mix some amazing g drinks. For the food we had the Special. Chicken on truffle parm risotto. So good. Cheese bread that comes with the tomato bisque. So good. All soups; Special tomato bisque. Really great flavors. French onion soup. Delicious! The depth of flavor was incredible. Add in the short rib for a full meal in a soup! Mushroom bisque was amazing. The bacon kicked it up. So much flavor. This was over 3 visits though. It is pricey but you definitely get what you pay for and the service is top notch.

Becky T.

Yelp
As a foodie, everything we endulged in fit the bill! See pics attached. Our service was top notch and the environment was just as nice. Recommend 100 percent. Dishes were excellent as were drinks!
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Excellent food, drinks, and staff. The Lobster Mac & Cheese, and Vintage Salad are amazing! It is a bit pricey, and wine has a high markup, but great overall.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
During our annual trip up north, we always make sure we eat here! The view and atmosphere is perfection which makes this restaurant one of the most unique places in Michigan. Our food is always consistently delicious, high quality and the portions are large. The service also is fast and helpful with really sharp waiters. This time we ordered the Vintage Salad with Salmon (a family favorite), the Tenderloin Pappardelle, Coconut Red Quinoa (great vegetarian option), and the Walleye. The only complaint is how expensive it is...it seems unnecessary how much money some of the dishes are. Overall, we loved our experience!
google avatar

Howard N.

Yelp
Much improved the past couple of years. Lamb chop appetizer is great and fine for an entree if you aren't super hungry. Most items are really good. If you can sit outside the view is spectacular. They have some NA wine too. Open Table really doesn't work well the way they use it so call instead.

Gary B.

Yelp
Beautiful setting in a wonderful area. Fantastic menu and stellar service. We can't wait to return.
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding food. Ordered takeout so can't speak to all aspects of the restaurant but I can attest it's on a gorgeous setting on Lake Michigan in Petoskey. Both our salads were excellent along with the coconut red quinoa. Wonderful roasted vegetables, warm curry sauce, delicious dressing, fresh ingredients, and a great chocolate torte to cap it off. Well done!

Shari B.

Yelp
Very good food! I love the burger, the truffle fries, the salads, the mushroom soup!

Tami Schultz S.

Yelp
Always great service and amazing food! One of the best places in northern Michigan to watch the sunset.
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Fabulous food served hot from the chef! Great choices. Great cocktails and service! Good ambience.
google avatar

Craig K.

Yelp
Excellent food and amazing views. We sat outside overlooking the water/sunset. The dry aged steak was incredible as was the seared halibut. I tried the wedge salad and my wife got the French onion soup. Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. The service is friendly but not on par with the prices. They need to be a little more attentive as I was left for quite awhile without silverware. It is very expensive but a top notch date experience.
google avatar

Niki B.

Yelp
This place is simply fabulous. It is definitely pricey, but the food quality is out-of-this-world and the view even tops that. During the time of COVID19, all employees are wearing masks, tables are distanced and there are many outdoor seating options that overlook the gorgeous lake. It felt very safe, clean and well-run. I ordered the salmon with mashed potatoes and it came decorated with little bits of local lavender. It was gorgeous and tasted even better. I ate every bite, as did everyone else at our table. I tried the chicken risotto as well and it was absolutely incredible. Our kind server brought us over homemade bread and butter and never missed a beat. It was truly a favorite night of vacation and we loved watching the sun set as we ate. Incredible!

Yelp
Had the chance to give Vintage a try recently - been meaning to for a long time. It was fine, but I don't see us going back - too many other good options in the area. Crab cakes had more filler than crab, though the sauce and toppings were decent. Caesar salad was standard, with only the Parmesan crisp on top to make it stand out at all. Cowboy ribeye was perfectly cooked and a good cut of meat, but lacked seasoning and was overall nothing special. We had the worst table in the house, which was disappointing and while our server (the bartender) was nice, the pacing of the meal was glacial - over 45 minutes between order and appetizer and another 30 minutes between that and the salad. Atmosphere is very old school/clubby and comfortable enough, and the view to the lake is very nice, but the overall experience wasn't good enough to inspire a return visit.

Yelp
Delish!!!! Great service and great drinks . Great for dinner and a date . Highly recommend .
google avatar

Deanna D.

Yelp
We went here for dinner yesterday. The food was good but for the prices they charge I don't think it's as flavorful as it could of been. To me it was just ok. I would say their drinks were really good though. Also, they don't start serving dinner until 5pm. Which they allowed us to wait to get the dinner menu instead of the lunch menu which was nice since our reservation was at 4:30pm.
google avatar

Yelp
The cocktails and food was delicious! We had dinner here to celebrate a birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. Also the views during sunset were breathtaking!!
google avatar

Yelp
Vintage is a staple for our family while in Northern MI during the summer months. We've celebrated birthdays, friends being in town and just an average Tuesday there and have never had anything but an exceptional experience. A newer addition to the menu, the club sandwich inspired me to write this review coupled with the incredible service we have had the 3 times we've been to Vintage in the last WEEK! The club sandwich is no joke the BEST club I've ever had- my husband agrees and we wanted to share that with everyone- really, not exaggerating- the best! The mushroom flatbread is another fav app, if you're unsure of what to try. I love Vintage for lunch, the grass area is full of kids playing and it's a more relaxed feeling. Dinner is prime for a beautiful sunset, delish meal (try the mussels- Wow!) and quality time just enjoying the beautiful setting. *Bailey was our server twice this week and Gabriella once- they're professionalism, kindness and ability to handle a full house was so impressive and really made our dining experiences what they were. We're sad our summer is over but are excited for next season as Vintage just keeps getting better! Thank you!

Yelp
The Vintage chophouse provided an amazing experience. Dwain, our server was exceptional! He did not rush us on ordering, he was genuine about his food and drinks recommendations. Through our casual conversation with Dwain, he uncovered we were newlyweds and went above and beyond. The restaurant was full, yet he was able to handle all the tables and their requests! Before our arrival, the Vintage Chophouse staff member called us to verify if we wanted indoor or outdoor seating, which we greatly appreciated because we were driving from 85 degree weather to 68 degree weather. I highly recommend this restaurant because of its amazing staff, gorgeous views, and lastly because their ribeye and filet mignon was outstanding!
google avatar

Jenna M.

Yelp
What a disappointment. I rarely ever (this may be the first) given 2-stars. If I have to give two or three stars (rare) I would let a staff member know the issue but this was over-the-top bad. The night before I had scoped out the wine & dinner menu and had high hopes of a romantic quaint dinner where me and hubby could "talk". (We made a reservation about 5 days ago) when the hostess attempted to seat us in the banquet room across the hall (see pictures attached) We inquired of being re-sat but was ignored and then the server came over we finally sat down but it was so loud even the server was having trouble communicating with us. We once again asked if we could be re-sat but he told us we'd have to talk to the hostess. To sum up my sad dinner: what was supposed to be a Wagu dinner accompanied by a couple bottles of Caymus turned out to be waters with soup and a salad (we literally ate and ran). I'm very sad I had this experience all I can say is Yelpers beware. This is a great great place to go and sit at the bar and have lunch. I reviewed the charcuterie plate and the friendliness of the bartenders. But for dinner? Either come dressed with beach attire flip-flops and put on your outside voice or go dine somewhere else.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
First dinner out since Covid lockdown. Sat outside and enjoyed amazing views over Little Traverse Bay. Tables were set up with social distancing in mind and staff, both inside and outside were wearing masks. I enjoyed an excellent salad and filet mignon which was cooked perfectly to my desired temp. Nice wine selection and the cheddar cauliflower was delicious. This is only the second time I've dined here, but I will certainly be back.
google avatar

Don S.

Yelp
Excellent food and cocktails. Best bartender in northern Michigan. Great service and exceptional food. The chef is a master. The restaurant is very comfortable and warm. Great view of the bay.
google avatar

Chicago R.

Yelp
The quality has considerably gone down and the service is no longer good. This is a old-school chop house, so we were never expecting much in terms of inventive cuisine. For a chop house, one needs reliable, consistent and well-executed food, and one typically relies on having a good portion. The restaurant missed the mark in all fronts. My fish was overcooked, and they gave me a very tiny portion. Granted my portion seemed considerably smaller than the other portions I saw floating around. I also mentioned this to my server, and she had the never to correct me -- flat out rude service!
google avatar

Marisa F.

Yelp
Great food, great views... decent service. I wish i could give 4.5 stars. I think it's obvious that this place is having the same staffing issues as everywhere else but our server was a hustler considering how many tables he had. The food was great! Get the vintage salad!!! I don't even like salads with fruit but this was one of the best salads I've ever had... get it!!
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Great experience here. We have been very picky about where we choose to eat during this pandemic but we felt very safe here. They sat us outside the usually restaurant, I'm assuming for spacing reasons and I'm happy they did. We have plenty of space between tables which made it easy to relax and enjoy. Food: excellent. We enjoyed several apps and my husband and son had the soup and it was wonderful. Dinner, we had steaks and I had a pasta dish. It was all delicious and the steaks were cooked perfectly and rested appropriately. Don't skip the cauliflower side! It is to die for! By far the show stealer. Drinks: good wine selection and our waiter was educated on them which is a huge plus. He was also very helpful selecting food. Kids loved the kids cocktails and they were different and outside the box which made it exciting for them. Great time and great service so we will be returning!
google avatar

Jenny P.

Yelp
So good! I got the king salmon- amazing so flaky and moist. Kids burgers were a generous size for the price! My husband got the wagu flank and loved it. Gluten free friendly and accommodating. Brought out GF bread even! We ate on the patio- amazing view! We would come back!
google avatar

Shari W.

Yelp
Impeccable service. Delish food! Fun innovative drinks. Everytime we are in town, we dine here. The meat and cheeseboard is the best you will ever have!
google avatar

Sam Z.

Yelp
We are staying at the inn at bay harbor and decided to eat at Vintage last night instead of driving to another restaurant. The food was very good we started with the calamari then split a Caesar salad, dressing on the salad was very good and a perfect portion. I ordered the land and sea and was very impressed the cook on the meat was excellent and the crab cake on top was very flavorful. My boyfriend ordered the beef short ribs and needless to say we cleaned our plates! The service was great Cynthia was very attentive. The only comment we had afterwards was the atmosphere, we were celebrating a big night and were hoping for more of a romantic setting. The decor and lighting lent to this but overall it was loud inside and TVs had a game on. Not really what we were expecting but we still had a great time and we're very happy with the food!
google avatar

Julia J.

Yelp
Food was good, impossible burger & fries were delicious, mushroom soup was okay. Great views and good service!
google avatar

Chip P.

Yelp
We were here last month and both the food and service were amazing. Unfortunately not so this time. My $12 mushroom bisque came out at the same time as my meal. My children's hamburgers were heavily spiced-not good for kids. My water was empty before my $32 Wagyu skirt steak came and wasn't refilled throughout our entire meal. In fact, take a look at this picture. Empty waters at the entire table. Not one water service throughout-and we were on the patio in direct sunlight without an umbrella...$119 bill before tip...I expected better than this...

Rick S.

Yelp
We were there July 2022. Beautiful place with great view. Food was terrible. French onion soup was full of short rib meat. Was more like a bad stew. I wanted soup. Waiter took it off bill. For dinner I had a pasta dish with "filet mignon". Was incredibly bland. Three bites I'm done. Wife had a beautiful piece of halibut. It was so overcooked you could hit it with a 9 iron across the dining room. Three bites and she was done. The dessert, sorbet , was good but we left hungry with a $200 tab. Never again.
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
We really loved our dinner here! We are staying here at the hotel and our food was delicious. The view took our breath away. Service was kind and responsive. Definitely looking forward to returning. The flavors of our dishes were perfect and kept us talking all night.
google avatar

Nerissa S.

Yelp
Gorgeous view of the sunset over the water. We had 2 pinot noirs, vintage side salad, french onion soup, quinoa curry dish and the shrimp pasta. Everything tasted delicious. The pasta is a small portion which my husband ate in a few bites, so for the price, we expected more. But the flavor profiles were balanced and delicious for each dish. We did order the bananas foster for dessert and were a bit confused as it arrived in a waffle cone bowl, with mixed fruit and ice cream. Not what I would call bananas foster. So that was disappointing. I would recommend another dessert to choose from. The service was great, the food was just paced on the slower side. My guess is so it encourages you to relax and enjoy your view of the lake and not rush the experience. The inn has been fantastic. Would come again.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Went back here recently after a long break. It's still very good but very pricey. Probably one of the best wedge salads and Filets around in the north counrty. Pleasant friendly servers and a wonderful atmosphere if you are lucky enough to sit in the original part of the restaurant. The extension across the foyer is not as inviting but understandable due to the very limited seating areas available in the normal dinning area.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Granted, the restaurant is still operating during Covid but in my opinion not at all worth the money. Food was mediocre at best and the atmosphere was lacking on all accounts for the price. Walleye was served barely warm, steaks not cooked to temp ordered and salads with wilted greens - not at all what you would expect for the price of the food. Even the meals that were hot and served correctly were just "ok". It was certainly not the experience we were hoping for, instead we were terribly disappointed. Service and drinks were good though.

Heather H.

Yelp
I have eaten at this chophouse more than once and it's in the hotel which make things easier but the food is okay. We were 4 adults spent $500 and would not return. The filet was terrible and dry at even medium. The Brussels were also okay you cannot really mess them up and they had no flavor! The wedge salad was good. The Wallaye was also okay, I've had better just okay. The hostess was also rude! As a guest of the hotel I was not happy.
google avatar

Cathy W.

Yelp
I have ate at great restaurants in Vegas, Miami, Chicago and San Francisco among many more. The waiter wasn't very good. We ran out of water 3 times. He never brought the bread. The fish was over cooked. My husbands steak was great. It's was our 26th anniversary was not impressed. Paid way to much for quality of food and service. Will never go back and never recommend.
google avatar

L W.

Yelp
The word I would choose for the meal I just had would be 'perfection'. Everything from appetizers, to soup, to the meal itself was some of the finest food I have ever had. The 'Lamb Lollipops' were cooked and seasoned to enhance the stellar flavor, the French Onion soup with rib tips was superb, and the Cowboy Rib Eye was a perfect cut with just the right amount of marbling perfectly seasoned and prepared. Our server, Conner, was incredibly attentive and excellent throughout the meal. I have never been to Vintages before, but I am certain I will return, as I believe I have a new favorite restaurant!
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
This recently changed names and possibly ownership??? But we were impressed. There was a fairly balanced menu to please everyone in the dining party and the views at sunset are to die for. The food was a bit pricey but delicious, and the service was pretty good too. It's the only restaurant for dinner at the hotel and one of three in the entire village.
google avatar

Bree P.

Yelp
There is no better restaurant patio to have dinner on in Petoskey area. The view is perfection on a gorgeous summer evening. Excellent service and cocktails. Food is solid, not exceptional. Farro summer salad is really good, walleye tasty. My husband liked his Delmonico steak, but expected better for the price. Mushroom medley side just okay. Caramel apple skillet dessert was mediocre. But you just cannot beat sitting by the bay in a gorgeous setting.
google avatar

Andrea J.

Yelp
When I checked into the hotel (this place is inside the Inn at Bay Harbor), I received a coupon for a BOGO appetizer special at Vintage. My coworker and I wanted to watch MNF so it worked out perfectly. We had a great bartender that was full of personality and knew his stuff. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and the Bison poutine as our appetizers. The shrimp was a good size and the Bloody Mary cocktail sauce was a nice break from the norm. I wish I would have taken a picture of the poutine because it was so perfect. The fries were crispy, the cheese was melted on top and the bison was melt in your mouth good! The bread was warm and soft. I asked for the truffle lobster butter on the side and i was so glad I did! They also had a deal on Cambus for $25 a glass, which I have never seen it by the glass before. A nice topper! Take advantage of they still have some left! I wish I could have enjoyed the view but unfortunately it was dark so we couldn't see outside.

Yelp
Spent a beautiful weekend in Petoskey and opted to dine here on a Saturday evening. This was one of our first post-quarantine dining experiences. They did a nice job creating an environment that appeared safe and clean. All employees were wearing masks (although that feels weird, it also feels necessary). The view from the dining room was spectacular. The food was excellent - especially our fried Brussel sprout appetizer. Only part that was disappointing was that my husband's steak was overcooked. He ordered it medium well, but it was definitely medium. A $40 steak in a chophouse really should be cooked to order!

Joe S.

Yelp
Just a quick note to reaffirm my ranking from previous years. That means five stars as this restaurant continues to be one of the very best dining experiences in Northern Michigan. Expecting less than stirling service what with most establishments staff shortages these days, I was pleasantly surprised that the service was very good and the food was excellent as well.
google avatar

Lucy M.

Yelp
Me and my whole family came here for my brothers 18th birthday, and i can say the experience we had was far from what we expected. To start off the atmosphere was disappointing. The table was not clean nor set, and the chairs were sticky. The menu was great, however when we got our meals 4/10 of the meals were mixed up. This caused manyyy complications but in the end we got most of it fixed up. My aunt ordered steak, medium. One of the sides of the steak was very rare, which would be understandable however the dish was 56$. Everyone would agree none of the meals were worth the price. The servers however were super nice, but we expected much more from this restaurant overall:)

Patti T.

Yelp
Love it!! Always delicious with great service too. A special place to share with family and friends.
google avatar

Pam R.

Yelp
We met our friends here last summer and it was just OK. Well, fast forward to yesterday, and we met up with them again. Same place. We felt very safe and were well accommodated. We ate dinner in the large room across from the Vintage, and the tables were well spaced. Our server wore a mask the entire time and met all of needs. Our food was fantastic! We all had something different, but the highlights were the walleye and short rib dinners. Hopefully, shortening up the menu has brought about the change. If not, I wish we had ordered those meals when we were there last summer! Excellent!
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Pretty decent for being located within the hotel! I had a number of drinks and a full meal at the bar, topped off with a delicious make-for-me dessert that they were able to fulfill (vanilla ice cream + Baileys = amazing.) I had the Caesar salad and the salmon. Delicious. The staff was incredibly friendly, and accommodating, especially since I had to get some work done on my laptop at the bar and needed a plug to charge it up! Will visit again - thanks for the service!

Yelp
To start, I had the Whistle Pig rye whiskey neat, which was an excellent reco from the bartender Adam. Then, I ate an amazmg iceberg wedge salad and for my entree the coconut quinoa salad with grilled chicken. Everything was DELICIOUS! The cozy restaurant also has terrific views of the bay. I'll be back soon! So far the best food in Petoskey / Harbor Springs area.
