15 Best Bars in Charleston | Condé Nast Traveler

"This space was most formerly Torch, a dark nightclub, and Betsy Berry of B. Berry Interiors has transformed it into a light and elegant space that suggests a stylish European spot. Everything centers around wine here, from wine-based cocktails, to wine flights, by the glass, and by the bottle. There's even a glass for $10 called "The Blind." If you guess its contents, it's free. There's also a serious cheese and charcuterie selection to fill out your table (and to Instagram next to your glass of course)." - Stephanie Burt

Very nice place for an evening cocktail. Our bartender was pleasant and eager to share recommendations and was proud of his art. They also have an extensive wine list.

03/13/2025 - Vintage Lounge We decided to drop in for a drink after our dinner. It was DELIGHTFUL!! We didn't eat there (obviously) but the drinks and atmosphere was very fun. We met the nicest bartenders (Ford and J.R.) and sampled different cocktails and took in a fun lecture on the cocktails from the 20's and 30's. The range of liquors is limited, but they make great combinations. And the atmosphere is GREAT. This truly was like "going back in time". We will be back!!

Google
Service was amazing and they have the best cocktails in Charleston by far! My server Maggie was very attentive and very knowledgeable on their menu. Would highly recommend!

Google
This is long overdue, but my husband and I love this place so much we’ll just drop in when we’re in the area to say hello to Nathan!! The first time I went there I loved the vibes. It has a very intimate setting with impeccable style and then if you want to stay even later through the night-they know how to keep up with the rest of upper King Street in a tasteful way ;) Honestly hope one day they’ll move to Broad St or somewhere south of Calhoun because I think they’re too good for that area! Their charcuterie boards are amazing, wine is divine, cocktails spot on and I think their fun Porróns is their specialty. Their staff is so kind and we’ve developed great friendships with some who used to work their. Can’t count how many birthdays we’ve celebrated their, business vendor parties, sporting events (definitely visit during the Kentucky Derby for a bougie time!) Highly recommend this place and our favorite time to go used to be on a Friday around 8 or 9 to keep the night going or start it off! Love you Vintage Lounge!!

Google
SO MUCH FUN!! Date night was amazing and it was all do to Billie, the red haired vixen. It was a random night, Billie ended up catering to a larger party than expected and MADE OUR NIGHT

Google
My experience at vintage lounge on Tuesday the 10th was something special. Maggie Hogg truly made it personable by getting to know us as a party and recommending cocktails and charcuterie. The espresso martinis were wonderful and service was excellent. We will definitely be back!!

Google
Amazing cocktail lounge with a darker, cozy atmosphere. Great place if you're looking for something a little more quiet and relaxing. Large selection of wines and spiritous cocktails, with a delicious food menu.

Google
Got charged for a tip when I didn’t write tip. If i recall my order it was 16 per cocktail. I ordered two and when you add tax it rounds up to around 38. I see charge for my account for 44.

Yelp
We just came in for drinks before our reservation. This place is very bright and clean, very different vibe than other places around. I did have possibly one of the best cosmopolitans I've had though. Everyone here was very nice.

Yelp
Our book club went here last week and it was a fun night! Very vibe-y inside with several seating configurations and options. There's lots of street parking and a few surface lots right near by. The staff were pretty good, on and off attentive. Great wine selection but slightly overpriced relative to other spots downtown. The charcuterie was really well done. Others enjoyed their espresso martini!

Liz B.

Yelp
We just left this lovely, chic, welcoming cocktail bar. GO! . The cocktail artistry is very much appreciated. The staff is generous with their attention, light with their conversation, and honest with their connection. GO.

Yelp
Amazing! My new fav for pre dinner drinks and nibbles. Extremely delicious cocktails and a fantastic charcuterie nibble!!! Great staff!

Yelp
Great ambiance. One of my favorite bars in Charleston. I prefer to go when it's dark outside and they dim the lights.

Yelp
We stopped into this upscale lounge for an after-dinner drink. We grabbed seats at the large bar, not realizing that there was apparently a rear garden with tables as well. I noticed that the menu offered a few custom cocktails, but was mainly focused on wine. I was not sure that my companion would be into that, but he found a beer that he wanted to try, so he was content. I, on the other hand, ordered a glass of the 2018 Avinyo Reserva Brut Cava, a blend of Macabeo and Xarel-lo from Spain, which was crisp and refreshing. This was definitely a classy spot more suited for a date or girls' night out.

Yelp
Vintage Lounge is a beautiful upscale bar with a wide selection of wines and variety of cocktails. First impression upon walking into this place was that it truly has a vintage vibe to it. From the furniture to the concave ceiling it kind of transports you to a different era. My husband and I were visiting Charleston and our hotel was in walking distance so we indulged in plenty of drinks. We started off by each of us ordering "The Blind" which was so fun! The Blind is like a game- the bar will send you a random glass of wine (you choose between red or white) and it comes with a card. On the card it is up to you to guess the grape variety, country of origin, region, and year. If you guess correctly, the glass of wine is free. We are not wine connoisseurs so we basically guessed everything wrong but it was still a blast. Our waitress was super sweet and brought us a taste sample of our actual guesses so we ended learning how far off we really were. Besides the wine which was all delicious, my husband ordered an Old Fashion which he was very happy with and I ordered the French 75 which was very light and refreshing. Highly recommend stopping by Vintage Lounge if you're in town!

Yelp
Holy cow! I can't believe I've yet to review my favorite bar! This is my go to spot for drinks and where I hold every French 75 up to. Tonight we had their espresso martini and discovered it too, is the best in Charleston. I also had the margarita and truly delicious. This is an upscale cocktails joint with no pre made mixes and all the beautiful people.

Yelp
Purchased New Year Eve tickets, $250.00 per person. Open bar and appetizers from 8:00pm to 2:00am. Manager demanded everyone leave at 12:30am. He had his staff literally pulling drinks out of people's hands. Employees were throwing away thousands of dollars of food as quickly as they could into large garbage cans. They kept saying, "Bosses orders!" Within minutes the lights went on and the staff and manager started berating all of the bewildered guests by yelling and demanding they "GTFO and that the party was over." Nobody could understand what was going on. It wasn't even 1:00am and we were being yelled at and bullied for no apparent reason. If we hadn't paid for a ticket that advertised a party with food and drink until 2:00am, it would be rude customer service, but this was a cash grab and the tackiest restaurant experience I've ever had. It felt like we were on an episode of Punked. It was that obtrusive and over the top horrible. The manager, who I hear is a part owner is nasty and vile. That attitude trickled down into his staff. Absurd establishment.

Yelp
Bartenders are slow, drinks taste bad and are weak. I hope I never end up here again.

Amanda C.

Yelp
The ambiance was awesome, I loved the vibe! The espresso martinis are a must try - everyone at the table got 2+! We did have a reservation, but we got there a little bit early and they sat us right away, which was really great. All in all, I plan on going back for another drink next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Had a couple of craft cocktails and was a good vibe. A bit noisy. Great people watching!

Yelp
Drinks were good. Bouncer tried to fight groom the day before his wedding. Would not recommend.

Yelp
We have no words. We have never been to a place that we have had management act so horribly . We asked to talk to the manager ( which is cringe to us ) after such horrible behavior and the manager told us that our friend was being a "whore" . One of our friends accidentally spilled a water glass and other management said " we all act like children when we drink" . when we address it and said we were not drunk or acting like children he shrugged it off, told us our friend was a whore and then walked away. She was wearing a short dress and that is the reason he said she was a whore. We all sat there stunned that this happened at such a "nice " place but don't be fooled. It's a nice place but management needs to be replaced if they want to be "high end".

Yelp
I love coming to Vintage Lounge the ambience is amazing. I always get the espresso martini and it's fabulous. Great drinks, great service, great atmosphere!

Yelp
Vintage lounge is a swanky cocktail bar located on Upper King. The velvet seating, fitting decor, and black/white tile accents sure give the lounge a vintage feel. Their cocktails and meats/cheese are handcrafted in house and made to order. My go to cocktails are the refreshing french 75 and dirty gin martini. The cheese board portions are massive and come with plenty of fresh bread. Definitely a must stop in Charleston if you are looking for a light meal, great cocktails, long wine list, and great ambiance with indoor/outdoor patio seating.

Yelp
Madelyn made our night! Curated the most delicious cocktails! Will be back tomorrow night

Yelp
Favorite bar we went to during our trip to Charleston. We stopped in shortly after they opened on a Friday and were easily able to snag 4 spots at the bar. We all started with a craft cocktail, all of which were good, but my fiance's espresso martini was a SHOW STOPPER (and we all are well versed in espresso martinis!). We all decided to order these for our next round. The bartender told us that the secret is using Averna in them to balance out the coffee flavor + sweetness. Whatever they did, it was amazing. The bartender was super personable, entertained our ridiculous questions and commentary, and taught us a little about the different cocktails and the space. The inside is beautiful and the bar is HUGE. Outdoor also looked nice and very instagram-worthy, but we were more than happy with our spots inside. It was the perfect place to kick off the night with delicious cocktails and good vibes in a beautiful setting.

Yelp
Cute bar & vibe. Staff was nice. Drinks were good. Nothing special, wouldn't say great or bad.
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Really cool place with fantastic drinks. A lot of places don't know how to make a real good dirty martini or old fashioned, but the bartenders at Vintage do. We go every time we go to Charleston.
google avatar

Mikayla P.

Yelp
Such a cute space! Awesome patio and drinks. I had an old fashioned and my friend had a margarita off their cocktail list. $13 for a cocktail, but that's pretty standard around here!

Kennedy F.

Yelp
I haven't written a Yelp review since I think 2016. That's how unfortunate the service was. It was so bad, I honestly feel bad writing this because it's going to blast the server. We went with a big party, like 12 people. With a reservation. The server was nervous, with big lag times (one girl at our table managed to get 2 drinks over the 2.5 hours we were here and the person beside her got waited on by the same guy for 4). It was really frazzled. He made a point to tell us we'd be getting one of their big wine decanters on the house for a birthday...only to have to retract that, come back to the table, and really confuse us all with the order. Big parties are a pain with checks. The service was so bad, I knew the whole time we were in for a catastrophe with checks. It was painful. He ended up splitting the table in like thirds, having us double up cards unevenly...everyone knew what they ordered but no one knew what they paid for. It was just a mess.
google avatar

Conner P.

Yelp
Came for the espresso martini (thanks Charleston City Paper) and 10/10 would mortgage my house to buy all the espresso martinis from this bar. Loving the flavor, the foam, the three beans ;). Be right back i'm currently savoring every drop
google avatar

Yelp
We did a quick stop at Vintage with a little time to kill before dinner at another place. Our group of 6 were the only folks in there, so service was great, but I got the feeling the service would be good there at any time. They had a very nice selection of drinks and wine to offer. They didn't have any beer on tap, just cans, but the good selection made up for it, sort of. Pricing was as expected on King Street in Charleston. I wouldn't seek Vintage out again, but with time to kill would stop in again for a beverage.
google avatar

Emma L.

Yelp
Service was amazing. We sat out on the patio and the overall vibe of the place was nice. Definitely somewhere to get wine and some fun drinks. If you're looking for cheese and wine this is the place to go
google avatar

Shamila P.

Yelp
Drinks was good however the bar tender has a little condescending tone to his explanation which was kinda annoying . My drink was pretty tho !
google avatar

Carla F.

Yelp
This was the coolest bar we went to in Charleston. I am absolutely obsessed with the layout and style. Loved the giant bar. We had some great mixed drinks and their giant charcuterie board. I will definitely be recommending this place for friends who visit Charleston.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Bar tender was extremely knowledgeable about the wines and could tell he was passionate about serving us drinks we would enjoy!

Julia B.

Yelp
My friends and I have visited Vintage numerous times for birthdays and always had a great time with great servers. The most recent time we were treated with the most disrespect. We are all of age and were talked down upon by the manager for being 21 while everyone else was clearly 30+. It was embarrassing and rude. Sad to say none of us will ever be returning.
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
Great spot for drinks with a classic vibe. Excellent bartenders and service. Also got good restaurant advice from the bartenders. Would definitely go again.

Yelp
Walked by this place a few weeks ago but had never noticed it before then. We decided to check it out last night. As soon as I walked in, I thought of the Great Gatsby! It has a classic, sophisticated feel. Since it was a weekday, it wasn't busy at all. We sat at the bar. We were immediately greeted by the bartender, Tim. I was indecisive about what I wanted. I informed him of my preferences and he whipped up a cocktail. I don't remember the name of it but it was good. He was super attentive and very knowledgeable. Kyle was the other bartender. He was equally attentive and helpful. The decor is retro--in a good way. It has an upscale feel--unlike many of the other bars on King. I learned this is a wine bar. There's seating along the walls. The ceiling is white with gold leaf. Inside there's a small stage in the corner with a brown velvet curtain backdrop. There's live music on the weekends. There's also an outdoor patio with a bar. There's faux grass on the walls--super interesting and unique. It was completely empty--making it perfect to snap a few pics. I was a little hungry so we decided to get a charcuterie board. I am the most indecisive person ever so we let Tim choose. They fix it right behind the bar--slicing the meat and everything!--neat! The food was delicious. What's a charcuterie board without wine, right?!...well that's what my boyfriend said. So we ordered wine. I'm not a wine connoisseur--I just know I like anything sweet. Tim let me sample two before making a decision. (They stop serving the small plates at 10 pm but everything else is available all night.) We asked a few questions about other drinks being made and each bartender was kind enough to answer our questions and thoroughly explain them. This is the perfect date night spot! I'm sure it's packed on the weekends so we may just stick to weekdays.
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Patio is super dog friendly. Amazing drinks, and the wine taste test is fun and engaging.
google avatar

Becca G.

Yelp
Mixed feelings on this place. Great place if you're looking for a cute, instagramable cheese board- with beautiful marble and velvet throughout, it's a great spot for a girls night. My complaints come with the service however, as every time I have been the service hasn't been superb- I asked if my wine could be slightly chilled and I was responded with, "red wine is supposed to be room temp" to which I quickly responded that it was supposed to be at 57 degrees, something a wine bar should know. Will definitely give it another chance due to the asthetic, but not getting my hopes up.

Lauren D.

Yelp
Nester is the best server ever! Such a kind and gentle soul. Made the BEST drink ever.
google avatar

Christi T.

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to try Vintage Lounge last night after dinner. The place was full but we were lucky enough to find the last two seats at the bar. As soon as we sat we were offered water and menus. Their drink and food offerings were impressive, especially since they offer some beers and cocktails and fresh baked desserts. I also appreciate that along side their wines they give a brief description of the flavor profile of each wine. From floral to medium body, they have a wine for everyone's taste. They are happy to give you a taste or suggestion as well. I'm a lover of Riesling so I was happy to see it on the menu. My husband loves more of a bold wine and went for a lush red wine. We were also on a mission to get dessert so we decided on the trio of creme brûlée. Chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch all served in small espresso cups and topped with their signature hard sugar shell and whipped creme. All three were amazing but the butterscotch was our favorite. The feel overall is cool and swanky. The staff and bartenders are knowledgeable, polite, attentive, and very professional behind the bar. I'm already incredibly excited to return to Vintage Lounge to experience more of what they have to offer.

Yelp
Met a group of friends that had a reservation, but only half our group could come in at first due to occupancy(fully understand this and it didn't bother us). Went ahead and ordered two drinks for $40 and after waiting 15 min we decided we would go ahead and close out while we waited for them so we could meet up with the rest out of our group. So I popped my head out the door to tell the rest the of our group it's not worth waiting to get in(because we were ready to leave). Immediately the manager pops up behind and repeats "it's not worth waiting to get in!?" Then kicks me out of the bar. Since I still had not received my drinks at this point I kindly asked him to reimburse my bill since I never got the drinks and he basically jumped up in my face and said I need to get out of his bar right now. He's obviously easily offended and the place is horribly ran. I've never been kicked out of a place, and I'm definitely not going back there.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
Without question the best new addition to King Street in years. Service is awesome, drinks are consistent, above average pour, great wine selections and small plates. Even at night they do an excellent job regulating traffic. There's also a great mix of people in the bar at all times. The outdoor patio and bar is a nice touch as well. Home run Vintage. Well done.
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
What a fun wine bar in Charleston! They make an impeccable French 75 and the cheese board was also so great. The manager and all the staff were fun and great conversation.
google avatar

Luis M.

Yelp
Came here for drinks after dinner. Place was comfy and not loud on a weekday night which we appreciated. The cocktails were pretty good, better than the average bar but also not amazing either. Service was great, friendly and had the right cadence of checking in but not annoyingly. The decor and vibe was upscale and a step up from a normal bar. Would recommend to couples looking to finish the night off or for people looking to get the night started in a classier place.
google avatar

Pamela K.

Yelp
This may be one of my new favorite places to go! Wine and cheese are my favorite things but add in fondue and ohhh you cannot lose! The wine is great, they have options for everyone and the waiters and waitresses are ready to help you taste and test out different types to help find the one you are looking for! There was never an empty glass at our table, the second someone finished, there was a waiter there to make sure you had the option for more! It was a classy romantic atmosphere but had a certain elegance that made it also perfect for a date night or a ladies night out as in our case. We have already planned our next trip here!

Heather R.

Yelp
Don't just go to prohibition, come here instead! Lovely chill laid back vibe. Sweet staff , such comfortable seating, sexy soft lighting, and, oh, really great cocktails, made with care. The music is alternative but cool, chill, not too loud but adds to the relaxed vibe.
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
My first experience at Vintage was absolutely terrible. I came in with six friends celebrating a birthday, one of which holds a now useless Gold Card for the bar. The birthday girl was given fun "tasks" to complete before the end of the night, and one of the other bar patrons was discussing it with her. The manager who just happened to be walking by overheard the conversation and immediately told our entire group that it was "not that kind of place, and we needed to leave." I have never been to Vintage and I will never return. Simply having a discussion with zero action taken by any member of our group and being asked to leave is despicable.
google avatar

Karissa S.

Yelp
Rachel was our cocktail waitress, and she is awesome!!!! Great attitude. Great suggestions. Loved our drinks. Try the "cocktail of the week" for a good surprise :)
google avatar

Darlene Y.

Yelp
Super cute spot for wine. Unfortunately I don't drink so I cannot comment too much on their wine selection, however they offered yummy dessert. There was a CHOCOLATE FONDUE with fruit, and also cakes. We sat in the outdoor patio area which got a bit loud, but it was fine. The space was super cute, there was live music, and the staff was very friendly. ENJOY!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Very nice bar. Nice combo playing in the back. Great drinks. Fabulous vibe inside and bartenders were attentive. Ran into some peeps at Vintage.
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
Was trying to find a place to eat for dinner without reservations and stepped inside this place. Excellent selection of good bourbons. Not a lot of food options, would have given a 5 star if they had more. Bartender was sweet but at first started to make me feel bad about asking why their Sangria contained brandy. When visiting Spain, no one there put Brandy in their Sangria. It is an American way of making Sangria. But bartender redeemed herself by recommending a fantastic glass of wine. This place is definitely worth another visit.
google avatar

Emily F.

Yelp
I ADORE this place. The Pourron options are not only a great deal but delicious and really fun to share! I love the vibe here, and always want to come here for any little celebration!
google avatar

Julia R.

Yelp
I thought I had written a review for Vintage Lounge months ago! Vintage is a lovely wine bar with an extensive wine list as well as delicious cheese, charcuterie and small bite options. Sitting in the big window is a treat. Be careful if you are seated close to the center of the lounge as they often have live music which can be loud. The musicians there on my last visit were phenomenal. The music was incredible. The only issue I can find with the place is the crowd as the night gets late. For many this would be an advantage:) For me, I would prefer to come earlier, enjoy a good glass of wine and maybe catch the beginning of the band before it almost becomes "the club."
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
Our bartender was easily one of the most condescending pieces of shit I've ever had the displeasure of serving me. The good: they have Delamotte and Janasse CDP by the glass, so that's something. The ambiance is quite nice. An old school, classy vibe. The average: There was a piano player really belting it out in the back but the acoustics make it hard to hear throughout the bar. Shame, as that's a nice touch. The bad: our bartender. From the jump you knew this guy was a real douchebag. Greeted with a smileless "yeah, what can I get you?" I proceed to read over the wine list. My GF wanted a cocktail, so I ask the guy if he can make one of the wine cocktails a bit sweeter. His response "we are a wine bar. You get what you get." Awesome. Then I ask about a few wines, all of which he clearly had zero patience for (even though the bar was basically empty). He then talks down to me about how wines from Sicily aren't for "beginning wine drinkers" and that I should try a pinot noir. No idea how he got the idea that I am a beginning wine drinker (I have 400+ bottles in my cellar right now) but it was an awesome way to lose out on future business. Good luck with that guy as the face of your space. Do better. +1 stars for the wines by the glass selection and the decor, but otherwise, solidly a 1 star affair.

Yelp
We loved Vintage Lounge! It is decorated beautifully and has a fun vibe. The service is excellent and the staff is very knowledgeable about wine. They had an excellent wine list and the cheese & charcuterie board was on point. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend this spot to anyone visiting Charleston!
