3 Best Day Trips from Orlando, Florida | Condé Nast Traveler

"Old Florida vibes abound at this wine bar and restaurant, open for dinner only and located inside a 1940s cottage. Painted eggshell blue with yellow window trim and flowers overflowing on the balcony, it's impossible to drive by without wanting to stop. It's surprising to find such an elegant restaurant in casual Crystal River. If you're looking for well-prepared local seafood and continental cuisine, too (think rich French sauces and even escargot) there's lots to like. The she crab soup is my favorite starter, silky smooth and redolent of fresh crab with the perfect sherry bite. The wine is just as big a deal as the food. Vintage on 5th has been recognized as having one of the best wine lists in the world in years past." - Terry Ward, Laura Ratliff

This was a great find when we were staying in Crystal River. We booked a table on the day ( they called us back after we left a message). Our server Michael was very attentive and informative. The food was great. The starter portions were generous. The main course sizes just right. The desserts were delicious too, especially the chocolate tuxedo cake. The setting is intimate with dim lighting. Almost European style.

Lovely place. Everything is given the highest consideration. Food selections are delicious, diverse & beautifully served. Specializing in a wide variety of wines. Dont miss this lil gem. The restaurant is in a beautiful old home.

One of my favorite restaurants in crystal river. Always great food and experience. Make sure to get reservations in advance because seating is limited especially for larger parties.

Romantic. Beautiful. Absolutely delicious. Small location but very intimate and amazing Shrimp and grits. Fried green tomatoes. She crab soup and the pork. Amazing

Google
The food was delicious. Great options for both seafood lovers and those who don't eat seafood. Prices were very reasonable. Upscale food without upscale prices. It was very steady so reservations are recommended. We were a party of 6 and made reservations the morning of and they were able to accommodate. Will go again for sure.

We decided to go here to celebrate a birthday. I called the night before to make a reservation and reached the voicemail. No more than 15 minutes later someone called and I was able to book for the following evening. We had to wait a few minutes for our reservation. As we waited we were able to look around at various awards , pictures and art . Once we were seated we decided to order the Caribbean Jerked Shrimp appetizer. It was delicious! They give you crostini to sop up the sauce the shrimp sets in. The depth flavor was just wonderful. The dish was not too spicy for those who are sensitive to spice. We both chose salads with the house vinaigrette which was tasty but the acid starts hitting hard after a few bites. I ordered the lamb chops MR with risotto and green beans. I can't tell you how good these were. I had to stop myself from picking them up and gnawing on the bones. The risotto was pretty good. I know it can be challenging to cook, the flavor was there. My spouse ordered the ribeye. The meat was cooked perfectly. It had a nice char to the outside and a wonderful juicy flavor to it. The sides were small red potatoes and green beans. We couldn't eat all of our food. The portions were fair for the price and the presentation and quality. The only thing that would have made the evening perfect would have been an espresso, latte, to have with dessert which we passed on because of that reason. I would highly recommend this establishment for a higher end dinner. The dress code is Florida casual which is perfectly fine. When the food is that good who cares what you wear? Just don't be naked. Thank you.

Google
I’m so glad my mother and I ended up here. It was one of the best dinners that I have ever had. The pork belly was crispy on the outside and tender inside. Flavors with it were so delicious. I had the ribeye which was a perfectly cooked medium rare and such a nice seasoning and grill taste. We also ordered the clams, crab soup, salad, fried tomatoes, ahi tuna… we couldn’t decide on one or two things so we ordered it all and it was all just as excellent as the others. Along with the excellent food, we were greeted by the owner when we arrived and you could tell he is a genuinely nice guy who wants to provide excellent service and food. We had a great chat with him after our meal. Thank you so much, we look forward to returning every time we are back in town.

Yelp
Excellent food, service, and ambience. Sat at the bar to eat because they were completely booked. Service (thanks to Valerie) is exceptional and the food (preparation, quality, and presentation) is beyond any expectation. Will definitely return when the opportunity presents itself again.

Yelp
Nice wine selection. Cozy atmosphere. Their food is amazing. Rodney is such a great host. Music on weekends. Best food in crystal river in my opinion.

Yelp
First timers. The wife had oysters for appetizers and then some sort of seared tuna. I had Caesar salad. They asked if I wanted anchovies with. I declined because of my allergies. They make their own dressing and it still had a strong taste of anchovies. I couldn't finish it. I ordered the ribeye, which was very good and tender . We ordered the creme brulee cheese cake. She ate her whole meal. Disappointed that they did not offer any rolls or bread.

Yelp
What a pleasant experience. This restaurant has been around a while and they are still providing an elevated offering in a small tourist town. I felt like I was stepping back in time a little in a good way. Not outdated. Nostalgic for the late '80's early '90's when fine dining was like this. Excellent service from Raymond. We had the Cedar Key clams, I think it was a special. We also had the grouper francese and Scottish salmon. The food was amazing. So was the Fleurs de Prairie rose. I will definitely dine again next time I am here.

Yelp
One of our favorite celebration restaurants for sure. Recently visited with my hubs and daughter for a birthday milestone dinner. I had lamb with a horseradish/mustard sauce, sides of risotto/corn/jalapenos, and green beans. The lamb was delicious but the sauce was underwhelming as the taste of horseradish wasn't there (I chose this entrée because I love horseradish). The risotto was a glump on the plate with one corn kernel. There were a few green beans, but they were fresh. Husband had shrimp and grits. Flavor was great although unusual to have spinach and mushrooms in grits. This is a very rich dish with a load of butter. Better for leftovers the next day by scraping the butter away. Daughter had the mac and cheese, always a good thing in life. She enjoyed her meal for sure. We shared a bottle of nice wine. Many of the entrées were sold out so choice was limited. Disappointed because this was a Saturday evening and we were seriously looking for their fresh fish. If we return again we'd try a weeknight before most things have been sold out. Not sure what to do about the risotto thing. I know risotto must be cooked with an eye on it all the time, this felt like the dregs of the pot. Somewhat underwhelming, we may be back but likely not for a long time.

Yelp
SO GOOD! The food was amazing and service was stellar. Ambiance is perfect for a fancier girls night or date night. Will absolutely be returning in the future

Yelp
Sooo Good! I've wanted to try this place and I am glad they reopened after the hurricanes!! Outside is a cute little house. There was a party in there tonight so a tad loud but the ambiance was very quaint. My server Raymond did an amazing job checking on me and making sure I didn't need anything (when you dine as one person, some servers forget about you after the first check in, so I appreciated that). Even the owner stopped by to make sure I enjoyed myself and thanked me for coming. Now to the good stuff- I went straight to appetizers.. more food to try! I really liked the fried green tomatoes, I'm a dipper so I wish it had a sauce of some type with it- but if you add the feta and bacon to every bite it will work! The blackened steak bites came atop an onion ring- great flavor! Cooked to perfection with a great cream sauce- Loved every bite of it!! The pork belly was a great asian twist to my dinner. Very flavorful. I will definitely be back to try more as the menu looked amazing!! If In the area stop on by and try!

Yelp
What a wonderful restaurant this is, we took my Mother to dinner for her Birthday!such lovely experience! Food was amazing. I had the Fresh Grouper , my Mother had the Rack of Lamb and my sister had the filet. All done to perfection! We started with the Calamari which had a wonderful Thai sweet sauce so delicious! Jennifer was our waitress and she was so helpful with giving us the menu presentation! Not only is she a fun waitress but she sings beautifully!! We met Chef Arron and he was such a humble sweet man!! The owner also made a point to stop by and make sure we were enjoying the dinner! Having traveled all over the country in the past few years , I can honestly say this restaurant has the whole package! Great Food, Ambience and WONDERFUL SERVICE!! From the moment you walk through the doors you feel so welcome!!

Yelp
Perfect local upscale restaurant! Nice for a romantic evening with your significant other. Food is great! The wine!!! The wait staff is wonderful, professional yet welcoming.

Yelp
This restaurant is a vintage older home that makes a great atmosphere for dinner. You do need reservations. They have a great beer and wine selection but no other alcohol. The restaurant is alive with friendly conversations. Our waiter was excellent and very helpful. Other waiter service filled water or removed dinner ware. We started with the she crab soup that was good. I had the alligator stew that was good. We received the house salad that comes with your meal that was chilled and plenty homemade dressing. My 16 oz. Ribeye was cooked perfectly and delicious. I had the potatoes and broccoli. I got the butter on my steak and the potatoes were tender. My wife got the osso buco pork shank. It was tender and delicious. She had the risotto and broccoli. We had leftovers. No room for a desert. Our bill was very reasonable for this quality of food and service. We will definitely be back .

Yelp
This is without doubt a finer restaurant, a bit pricy but worth it. The food and service is fabulous!

Yelp
We've never had a bad meal nor bad service in 40 or 50 visits. Creative menu and impeccable service. Good wine list.

Yelp
Place is amazing. Food is even better ..Great place to go eat, relaxing and quiet . A great ad to Crystal River.

Discerning Chef ..

Yelp
I studied as a saucier so I have an appreciation for this place. Been here dozens and dozens of times. Great atmosphere, great host, bartenders are fantastic. So much so I often prefer sitting at the bar. Wine selection is great. Has a great small restaurant vibe. While the menu doesn't change a whole lot, and is not a ton of selections, what is prepared is spot on and consistent. Quite impressive for the size of this place, staff and price point. The sauces sometimes change daily and go so well with a lot of the selections. There's a lot of the sauces I've fell in love with that I didn't think I would and pairings that work quite surprisingly. You're gonna want to make a reservation for this place, it's too hard to walk in but they make every effort to accommodate. Ossobuco - A+ - best I've ever had. Lamb - A+ sauce pairings are spot on Filet - B+ temperature was dead on. Béarnaise could have been the cherry on the top for this filet, but honestly, how many sauces can you make for gods sake. Still fantastic ...

Yelp

Yelp
This has been a favorite restaurant of my wife and me. The service was very good and the ambiance quite good. We had dinner there on Friday November 22, 2024. Apparently, the restaurant had been damaged by the flood waters of Hurricane Helene. We were told that repairs had been made though some were still to be made. My wife and I each ordered a ribeye steak. Both steaks were practically uneditable. They were filled with grisel to the point they were difficult to cut with a steak knife let alone chew. It's hard to understand how this could happen in a restaurant of this caliber. They must be sourcing their beef from a different provider or else their provider thinks that they are asleep at the switch.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
First time visitors...and it won't be the last. True service from start to finish, food beyond compare, and an ambiance that should serve as a template for all other restaurants in the area. Raymond was our server and he was the best we have had in years. If you want a great memorable night out, make it a Vintage night.

Dave B.

Yelp
Bad experience with bad food. Server offered no compensation for a bad serving of tuna. Chef made up something about a piece of the fish is always like that . Must think his customers are stupid. Won't go back there. Too bad, used to be a good spot but those days are apparently gone.

Yelp
This place is very charming, it was a house that was remodeled into a restaurant something like built in 1936. As soon as you walk in the door you realize it's a very small restaurants only 14 tables and quite frankly it feels like home. It was beautifully decorated and very charming We had a reservation and were seated immediately our server Jennifer was very prompt and Satuit that we had menus and a wine list, they only serve beer and wine. We ordered a bottle of wine and studied the menu. Our server advised us that many things change on a nightly basis including the sauces that are served on top of things. She told us about her options for the evening including the specials of the night and we both opted to order from the menu. I had the New York strip steak served with creamy risotto and a side of mushrooms. The steak was served medium rare and it was cooked perfect, but the risotto was an absolute wonderful side to this dish. My wife had the dish called chicken scallopini and it could be served three styles, piccata, rustica or marsala. She chose the marsala and the dish was beautifully plated and she said it was wonderful. It was my wife's birthday so we ordered dessert. Our server recommended the flourless chocolate cake with a side of vanilla ice cream. She served us and then sang happy birthday and she had the voice of an angel, definitely a singing talent. The cake was wonderful and we enjoyed every bite. The portions were large so we both had food to take home. I can't wait to come back to Crystal River so that we can come and enjoy vintage on fifth street again.

Yelp
Had a reservation. Got haggled by staff regarding parking immediately after exiting our vehicle. Once we were inside the food was overpriced for the quality. Serving staff were great. But overall not a good experience.

Yelp
It was our dear friend's birthday, so we took her to one of her fave places. I had called ahead, as I am whole food, plant-based (no Salt, Oil, or Sugar), and the Chef was going to "figure something out". Let's just say, this place ranks in the top 3 restaurants in my life! First off, the bartender Valerie was super knowledgeable and was able to select the perfect wine for our tastes. She was attentive but not overbearing, so graceful that she was not disruptive to our meal/experience, and amazing at answering questions about the menu. Then, the food came... Wow! Friend ordered the Grouper with Risotto, which she LOVES, and hubby had the Ahi Tuna with Risotto. The House Salad came and we all loved it - the House Balsamic Vinaigrette was delish they said, and even with the minor changes to my salad with a straight Balsamic Vinegar, it was delish! Both of them were super thrilled with both the flavor and presentation of their meals. But the star of the show was my meal... it was a relish medley of corn, yellow squash, onion, etc. cooked in banana/plantain leaves with tarragon and I don't even know how they Chef managed to give it SO much flavor but the folks next to us said, "Wow! What is that is looks and smells amazing!". I would like to transplant this restaurant to Clearwater where we live, or at least take the Chef, cause this is some of the best healthy, plant-based food I've had since Nashville a few years ago! Thank you so much, VO5, for a delish dish for each of us, with the extra effort on mine! Y'all are

Yelp
They are permanently closed since the hurricanes, but prior to that their food and service went downhill.

Bob J.

Yelp
such bad ownership and management. treats his employees like animals. Asks them to go above and beyond and gives them no satisfaction. treats them with no respect then expects the most out of them.

Marsha T.

Yelp
We had 5PM reservations. We arrived at 4:45 as did several others with reservations. It happened to be a very cold, rainy day and the hostess forced us stand on the porch until exactly 5:00. Yes there was an overhang so we didn't get wet but we froze. If I were the hostess, I would have invited the guests to sit at the bar rather than wait in the cold. Once seated, we felt very rushed. The wait staff clearly wanted to ensure that we wouldn't overstay our time slot. We used to look forward to our dinners at Vintage. We won't return.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
I got lucky they had a last minute opening. I didn't realize you had to call for reservations until 2 days prior to when we wanted to go. But they had an opening and I was thrilled! Our waiter was so awesome!!! He was friendly and very attentive. We started with the she crab soup, which was flavored perfectly. Their bread service is also delicious. Fresh hot ciabatta. We both ordered the grouper and were not disappointed. I recommend the Gouda grits as a side item. Their salad was super fresh and delicious too. I recommend requesting the porch seating if you can. We got lucky with the weather being perfect! It was a great experience! Super cozy and intimate.

Yelp
If you want high quality food, table service that is second to none this is the place. The servers are professional and know what they're doing. You will not be neglected or disappointed. The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting. Two thumbs way up!

Brittany H.

Yelp
Wow. Wonderful people and delicious food. On vacation, we called in the afternoon to ask if they could accommodate a vegan, and if they could take a party of thirteen that same night. Nancy assured us that they would make a fabulous vegan meal, and seat us in their private wine room. Upon arrival, remembering there was a vegan among us, they reassured us the bread was vegan and un-buttered (if you're a vegan, you know how much relief this brings), and then our waitress walked us through the evening's selections and prices from memory. She made great wine recommendations, was friendly and knowledgeable, and made sure we were well taken care of. The food was tasty and well portioned. The vegan option they brought was a stuffed pepper with vegetable risotto, which was delightful. Needless to say, everyone in our party was greatly impressed and well fed. We can't wait for our next visit.

Yelp
This restaurant was phenomenal! The food and the service was especially incredible! I dined with my family and Mike was an amazing server!!! I don't remember a time I had service that well. Also amazing ambiance!

Yelp
Special occasion dinner. I suggest reservations a few weeks ahead. Restaurant easy to find with ample parking. It's a quaint home converted to a restaurant. Small but impeccably decorated. Ambience is casual but it seemed fitting to dress up. Not a restaurant for children. To start, let me say the service staff were wonderful. They all worked as a team with the singular goal of a memorable dining experience. The menu offered something for everyone's taste. My advice is to try their specials and limited time offerings. Another thing we did is take our waiters advice on seasonings and sauce. Most entrees come with several options. Raymond our server did us well. For appetizers we started with the She Crab soup and the Cedar Bay Clams. Our entrees were the Angus Tenderloin sprinkled with Gorgonzola, Mashed Potatoes on the side, and the Australian Wagyu Ribs with Vegetables and Risotto. The food was expertly prepared, delectable taste and the most tender beef we've ever had. Both paired well with some Cabernet and Pinot Noir. Finishing touch was Limoncello Cake. I must say Vintage is the best restaurant we've experienced in North Central Florida.

Randy S.

Yelp
Had Dinner last night and it was Fantastic 6 people ate and no one ordered the same thing and all were very Very Satisfied with the Food Presentation and Service. This is a Very Good Restaurant. The wine selection was excellent. The only complaint from our group was they don't have any liquor and some of the ladies wanted a Martini before Dinner. Loved this place $$$$

James T.

Yelp
Everything about this place is right. From super friendly Teri answering the phone, to our outstanding waiter Michael. The place itself is gorgeous, but it's the food that seals the deal. What totally blew us away was the prices and the portions. Normally high quality food means small plates, smaller portions and big prices. Not here! If you are anywhere close to this place do yourself a favor and go! Oh, and make a reservation if you can.

Yelp
Vintage on 5th is a complete treat. From the moment you walk up until they tell you good night and please come back soon. We had a couple of things to celebrate and got a reservation (I recommend getting a reservation for sure, especially on weekends). They were so nice on the phone. I even called back to ask about uber service etc since we are visiting and they were extremely helpful. We were given our choice of a few tables and were able to score a seat by the front window as the sun was setting. Pregame cocktail with pink champagne bubblies served in gorgeous flutes. The menu is outstanding plus, be ready for many specials that will distract you... I repeat, be ready. We started with truffle fries because, truffle fries, and the pork belly. The fries were crispy crunchy fresh with Parmesan and fresh herbs- delicious. The pork belly is its own experience. Perfectly prepared with a slight spice that shows up a moment after your bite, wow. Talk about flavor layer development. We decided to share entrees and had the ribeye from the butchers block (plus blue cheese stumbles) and a parm encrusted Chilean sea bass with a lemon caper sauce that was out of this world. The staff is amazing, the food is beyond wonderful and I can't wait to come back so we can maybe order every appetizer, then slowly work out way through the menu. Oh, and they make their own salad dressings- yesss!! Thank you everyone at Vintage, you made an amazing weekend just a little bit more than we expected. Can't wait to see you again.

Leonardo F.

Yelp
Excellent, server was great knew how to explain the manu took great care of us, food was delicious nothing to complain about left thinking about when I was coming back

Dennis H.

Yelp
This place is a treasure. Everyone's food at our table was perfect. We all (4 of us) had grouper prepared differently. Each though they had made the right decision. The sides were excellent. The wine was very reasonably priced as well. Our waiter was great... I can't believe I forgot his name. Super helpful did not rush and Made us feel comfortable, welcome and unrushed. The restaurant itself is very nice small white tablecloth nice staff honored reservations promptly. All in all a great experience for our party.

Yelp
Delightful dining at a very affordable price. She crab soup and salad hit the spot before the chicken piccata and ossa buco came out. Delicious food. From Terrie the hostess to Valerie working the bar where we ate, it was warm and friendly. I recommend this with no reservations but I suggest you make them.

Bianca U.

Yelp
The food is excellent, the service is exceptional, and the ambiance is amazing. Just a heads up they only take Visa / master card . Highly recommend . Great for special occasions with family and friends. Love it .

Yelp
This is a tremendous place! I've been here 1 time before and felt the same way. The service is on point and the food is amazing. All of it. My husband had the pork, I had the lamb and my son had a pasta dish. It was all amazing. Fresh tasting. Perfect.

Nancy M.

Yelp
Service and staff are so helpful and attentive! Decor is understated elegance! VO5 food is excellent Everytime!

Yelp
Food was great. We had clams and mussels for appetizers. Then we had salmon . That too was great. Michael was our server. He did a great job. We were not rushed. Everything was served at the right time. The atmosphere was very relaxing. In fact a beautiful place for couples. Oh, and groups. We truly enjoyed it.

Mike Y.

Yelp
Food is the highest quality in Crystal River by far. Service is great. Very intimate setting. Make sure to make reservations.

Yelp
Our friend made a dinner reservation to celebrate a birthday. We arrived and sat at our table, and our server went over the menu. We ordered our food, and shortly after our order was placed, our server came back to tell us that she was going to rush our order because there was another reservation coming after us. Another words she wanted us to leave in time for the next reservation. Yet we had made this reservation quite some time ago. So this sounded like they were overbooked. Nonetheless, it took forever to get our food. One point I would like to make is, one of the specials was a whole fish served on a platter with vegetables. I asked the server if it was a bony fish. She went into the kitchen to ask a chef and came back and told us that it was not. So it was safe to order it. Three of us in our party ordered the fish and much to our surprise and disappointment, the fish was mostly bone and hardly any meat. We mentioned this to the server and I was surprised no apologies from the chef or the manager nor offering a substitute was made. It was clear that all they wanted to do was serve us and get us out the door. Our host who made the reservation, spoke to the manager and express our disappointment. Our server did not even come back to check on us while we were eating to even ask if everything was OK. It was their loss because we would have loved to order more wine and dessert and coffee, However, we felt rushed and could tell they wanted us to leave. This is the rudest and most unprofessional service I've seen in a restaurant of this caliber. Our group goes out to dinner at least once or twice a week. I will never return to this establishment and do not recommend them whatsoever. The food was awful, and unprofessional service.

Yelp
Food is always excellent and the staff is efficient and friendly Very relaxed Love the grouper As always very relaxed and comfortable ambiance

Yelp
Our family had a bad experience tonight. After over an hour all 5 meals came dry and overcooked. The waitress said the chef would do nothing. As we walked out the owner asked if we enjoyed our meals. We all said No! He followed us out and said we always take care of problems then walked back inside. Nothing was done, not a sorry from anyone.

Clement M.

Yelp
Awesome food great service. One of the very best restaurants in that area. I would have to rate it number 1

Gerry M.

Yelp
Vintage on 5th is one of the best restaurants in Central Florida. The staff is outstanding and the food at the top level. Shrimp and Grits, the grouper and steaks are at the top of my list. They have an extensive wine list and Valerie behind the bar is the top in the business with helping you find the perfect choice. Reservations are certainly suggested because Vintage is so popular with people who love good food. Without reservations you can sometimes find space at the bar to enjoy a meal, just don't take our seats.

Kathy S.

Yelp
Everything about our visit was top notch. The food and service were both fabulous. Very intimate setting. Glad to have experienced it and would love to go again!
