11 Best Bakeries in Charlotte, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"There’s some strong force pulling Charlotteans a valiant 25 miles south to charming Waxhaw, and that pull is Ben and Lauren Kallenbach’s Virtuoso Breadworks. In this house-turned-bakery, choose between the homey sitting rooms or a picnic yard to tear away the layers of a decadent almond croissant with a crisp bake on the outside and a feathery interior. The breads and pastries are expertly specialized, with an emphasis on quality and freshness over quantity. The signature wild yeast sourdough is scored with delicate designs and the focaccia rotates with the seasons, like a summer’s homemade pesto and Sungold tomato loaf. The towering sticky pecan bun, the eye-catching raspberry Danish, and the omnipresent feeling of being taken care of are the treasures at the end of this journey beyond the city." - Kayleigh Ruller

Delicious pastries at this bakery!! I arrived a little after nine on a Saturday morning. Although I had to wait in line, I was only there for about 15 minutes. As you are leaving the bakery, there is a sign that says to check your order. I wish I had checked my order! I received a glazed donut with sprinkles even though I had ordered a cinnamon twist donut. I am not a fan of glazed donuts but this one tasted like a pastry. Overall, everything I ordered was delicious. It is pricey but I would recommend this bakery.

Google
THE BEST BAKERY I’VE EVER BEEN TO! The staff here are so nice and welcoming! They take the time to tell you every item in the case and literally everything is delicious. Also, the coffee is fantastic. It’s Enderly, which is a local Charlotte roaster and the barista here is fantastic at her job! I look forward to coming here every week. It is the highlight of my week. The sourdough is to die for and everything is made fresh daily. My favorite items are the cinnamon roll latte, the fruit danish, the banana bread, the sourdough bread, blueberry lemon coffee cake, and the spicy cheese biscuit. 10/10 MUST GO

Google
Excellent sourdough bread. Can't wait to good back and try some more items. The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was inviting and relaxing. I highly recommend!

Wow this place is just incredible. Every time I pass it I need to convince myself not to go in. My twins LOVEEE the pastries and I’m a happy mama guilt free because of the great ingredients. This is a go to place whenever we have visitors out of town. Yes it’s on the more expensive side but time is money and have you ever made anything sourdough…if not then you can’t complain. We easily spend $$$ on who knows what without an extra thought about it, and then expect a bakery to be cheap. Very happy to have this little gem in our little town. Thank you for your hard work

Google
Had a great coffee and flat Stanley (smashed croissant). Little local gem. House like seating and some outside seating too. Only a bakery so no sandwiches or eggs. Everything is baked onsite. Super fresh.

Cute little house turned Bakery. Always an amazing and creative product coming out of that kitchen! Complete with love and absolute yum!! A gem for really great baked goods both savory and sweet!

Google
Not cheap, but everything i have there was absolutely delicious. Bagel bomb was stuffed to the max. Lemon croissant cupcake thing was awesome. Cream cheese croissant great. You get what you pay for. Ill be a regular customer

Google
Drove for about 40 min to this place to try the pastries and it did not disappoint. Got bagel bomb, tomato feta cheese danish, cranberry cheese danish, cardamom bun, butter croissant and chocolate croissant. Their flavors are good, savory pastries are well seasoned and sweet ones were well balanced, loved the fact that the sweet ones are not extremely sweet. Croissants were really flaky with several layers, the butter flavor was good, they are now in my top places for croissants in NC. I only wished they were closer to Charlotte area.

Yelp
Great little bakery that's always creating yummy treats and breads!! Their chocolate chip cookies, bagel bombs, croissants, spinach/broccoli cheese danish, sourdough bread, and basil pesto mozzarella Focaccia are all a MUST and worth every penny!! Chive biscuits are so good that I have to hide them from my kids, or I'll never get one!! Kindest and sweetest baker/owner! Her staff is just as great and helpful. Everyone there is kind, welcoming, and always smiling! Great customer service, which is just as important as the food made here! People want to complain about prices, but it's 2024 everything is expensive. You get what you pay for here, and it's worth it to my family!! We love Virtuouso

Yelp
I'm a quick learner and what I've discovered is don't fall asleep thinking this small town bakery is anything but hopping. Dialed in, actually. After camping up the road at Cane Creek we stopped in midmorning for a take home loaf of their Irish Cheddar Sourdough bread only to learn they were "sold out." I hate those words. Good for them, sad for me. My fault, but, damn, I dreamt about that bread before breaking camp. Ugh. I filled my paper bag with delights, smiled and said thank you, but was soooo disappointed. Next time I am calling it in! Looking to get your hit of yeast and sugar high? Better get there early. Has the dough rising on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Order early here. And enjoy!

Yelp
Oh my goodness....this place is legit! The croissants are just beyond!!! The layers!!!!!!!

Yelp
Ho, ho, ho! What a nice find, just south of Waxhaw, a little beyond the old mill. Cute little building, seating inside on a wide variety of furniture collected through many a yard sale, maybe, and a couple of outside tables. Coffees are excellent. Great baristas put it all together. But the gem of Virtuoso is their fresh baked goods. Breads and pastries made fresh each day. You need to go early to have selection, although they do manage to display a good amount of whatever they baked for that day. We especially like their generous use of cinnamon, going for the "twist" of soft dough and sugar topped yumminess. Savor the flavor along with your coffee and you will feel like you are in a virtuoso quality bakery that sells coffees. On the left as you roll out of downtown Waxhaw.

Yelp
Virtuoso is one the great bake shops in the region. The owners care deeply about what they're creating and serving their customers, and more importantly HOW they serve their customers. They take pride in what they make and you can taste it in every bite and every sip. We've been going here since before our first child was born, and the weekend hours spent here are special. Their business has become a part of our lives, an event on our weekends, and a staple in our home. Ben and Lauren have built something truly special!

Yelp
I would like to start by saying that their bread is amazing, always fresh, perfect amount of crunch, soft chewy interior. Their dinner rolls are seriously divine and reheat tasting just as good days later. I absolutely love their bread! Wish I could say the same about their customer service, which is SO poor. The folks that work/manage the shop are horribly rude and are not accommodating. I recently placed a Thanksgiving order for dinner rolls, donuts and cookies. I realized that I would need an extra order of dinner rolls after they stopped taking additional orders. But I noticed on Instagram that they were advertising that they were making more, so I called on the Monday before Thanksgiving to see if they would set some aside so I could pick them up with the rest of my order later that week, on Wednesday. They said no and told me that I would have to stop by the shop in the morning on either Tuesday or Wednesday and essentially hope for the best. I then asked if I might be able to pick up my order an hour early on Wednesday, so I could ensure that I come early enough to get those extra rolls and the woman on the phone proceeded to lecture me about why they asked customers to select a pick-up time and indicated they could not fulfill my request. She was incredibly rude and condescending. Meanwhile, I ordered my pies from Villani's and they were nothing but nice and pleasant when I requested to adjust my pick-up time with them. Honestly, if Virtuoso's had some competition and weren't so close to my house, I wouldn't go back there. This isn't a bakery in NYC where they might get away with treating their customers poorly. There are other small businesses I'd rather support. Update: My husband stopped by the day our pre-order was ready (Wednesday), first thing in the morning, around 7am. He was told they didn't have any rolls ready and to come back later in the day, around 11:30am, which would be after our pick-up time of 9:30am. If we even get any at this point, my husband and I will have made three attempts to get extra dinner rolls. It should NOT be this difficult to purchase bread.

Yelp
Great pastries, but definitely not for someone on a budget. If you want to splurge, definitely try them out.

Yelp
The food and service here is amazing. It has a great outdoor area with picnic tables to enjoy your yummy treats. I particularly like their chocolate croissants and their loaded bagel bites.

Yelp
Sunday morning and I am enjoying my coffee and English muffin at home from Virtuoso Breadworks. The nooks, the crannies, the slight sourdough taste with my Amish butter...Joy! The chocolate chip cookies are but a Friday afternoon memory. Oh but what a memory! The rich, bittersweet chocolate, the hint of salt spinkled on top, the perfect cookie! Do yourself a favor and get down to Waxhaw before they sell out for the day!! #bakery #VirtuosoWaxhaw #EnglishMuffins

Yelp
My husband and I went to Virtuoso's for the first time today and it was amazing! We got the coffee cake, cardamon bun, and cinnamon bun! Everything was so delicious and the staff at the counter were extremely nice and helpful! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Good pastries and good bread, but very expensive. 16$ for a foccacia seems a little silly.

Yelp
After hearing lots of great things about this place, we decided to check it out. It's a bit of a drive for us, so we planned a hike in the area too. Covid-19: I was actually not very comfortable here. We waited in line for probably 20-25 minutes in a very small, and pretty crowded converted house. The worst part was that they have couches for people to eat at right next to where you have to wait in line. While we were there, two people were just sitting on them talking, not wearing masks (they had clearly finished eating a while ago). Given the small area and that there's no way to get takeout quickly, it would be safer if they didn't have people eating inside right now. Once we got to the front of the line, the staff was very friendly and described everything they had. We ended up getting a sourdough english muffin that was stuffed with sausage, bread pudding, and a dulce de leche cruffin. The english muffin sandwich thing was delicious. It wasn't served warm, but we still loved it cold. I might take it home and warm it up next time. The bread pudding was pretty good too. The cruffin was not good. It was very dry and didn't have a lot of dulce de leche. I'd love to come back and try some more of their savory items because I think that's where they really shine.

Yelp
Fabulous baked delicious delights and homemade treats!! Loved my spinach feta croissant for savory and flaky flavors. The menu changes weekly so check their social media for updates. Ordered their monkey bread croissant and m&m cookie to go. Also their amazing English muffins that I have heard are amazing. Their patio is comfortable and small, no covers for rain but awesome on a sunny day. The service was friendly and quick on a weekday morning. Loved my food! Hope to return for more delicious food!

Yelp
We live a few miles out but it's so worth the trip that we come about once a week. The pastries are phenomenal and some are very unique. It's well worth the trip! The owner manager will make things right and resolution communication exceeded my expectations. I wish they were 7 days a week! I give Virtuoso my highest compliment and recommendation, now that's saying something since the majority of my reviews are unfavorable! LOL

Yelp
Great bakery! Perfect croissants!!Just like in Paris. Their pastries are amazing. Love that it is in Waxhaw.

Yelp
I drove all the way from Charlotte to try Virtuoso and it did not disappoint. Everything I tried was flavorful and perfectly baked. Also a lot of their baked goods are huge so they're perfect for sharing! I didn't snag a picture but their coffee/tea was great as well! Perfect spot to grab some treats!
google avatar

Carolyn P.

Yelp
The Sourdough bread is the best!' They have many other tasty unique pastry and breads to purchase. The coffee beans i use everyday at home plus a treat on the weekend is the bagel!! Love Virtuoso's!!
google avatar

Sandra P.

Yelp
The pastry is good, the drinks are ok, there is a person who works there who is very unpleasant only for that reason I personally avoid going there more often, unfortunately she is always there. Today they forgot to put one of my pastry just because she couldn't stop talking.

Barb O.

Yelp
Great bread. Cute little place that I didn't even know was there.

Daniel H.

Yelp
This is what a bakery should be! Everything they make here tastes great. The staff is awesome too. We moved recently and I really miss this place. Now we only go there occasionally because they are not very close, but the long trip is worth it. Typically, we get coffee and a pastry. They change what they have on a daily basis but there's usually something with chocolate and it's always delicious. We also get bread and focaccia - it's all fresh made and irresistible. They have a cozy seating area, so you don't need to drive home smelling all that baked goodness on an empty stomach. We usually have the coffee and pastry before going. Very pleasant experience. You'll enjoy it and it's very close to the center of Waxhaw (walking distance) so a great way to start your trip to town.

Reba P.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, baked good and staff. I absolutely love supporting this business. HIGHLY recommended!

Yelp
Just have to sneak in here and tell you about one other favorite I just got to experience. The ALMOND CROISSANT ! It is pure Almond Heaven...never have I had a croissant call my name ..I was trying to save half of it to share with someone...No Way!! I had to reopen the box and finish it...before my coffee was even done! No Waiting... The almond flavor and tender dough and powdered sugar and flakes of almond on the top are just incredible. Just had to let you all know this !! A+!
google avatar

P R.

Yelp
The baked goods here are pretty amazing, the staff is always really friendly and inviting even at their busiest, so cozy to be there I just want to eat a pastry and take a nap there lol!

Yelp
Accommodation for the customer isn't a priority. Bought a gift card from here prior to Covid and had hoped to use it before leaving town at that time. When I returned, a year or so later, I find they have changed their name. They obviously recognized the card and envelope that the card was in and said I'll try to swipe it in the card reader. Nothing registered and said sorry for your luck and handed it back. Also saying, I guess it was worth a try. I said I guess so, but I was disappointed since it obviously was the same ownership, only with a new name. And all of this happened about 15-20 minutes before closing, which I can imagine they bag up the leftover baked items for some type of disposal or donation. At the very least, they could offered a couple of pastry's for the useless card that was a 100% gain for the shop.

Yelp
These folks have done it right..... we've craved a non mass-market bakery since we arrived in CLT (20 yrs ago) and Panera was mostly all that was here. Few have popped up, but are inconvenient or the breads we've enjoyed are someone's "side gig" versus their mains staple ...... (or bread & butter! HA!) but our desires were satisfied when we stumbled upon this place. Initially introduced from the seductive pics on Instagram, my son and I got up early one morning to scope out the goods. It was quite the line for a Saturday morning, but we met a pleasant woman and her young son, so they helped pass the time. When we finally got in, the ladies behind the counter took their time to describe everything and share their personal favorites (this was quite the experience given they were busy and could have easily scooped us along). We "bit" and ordered nearly one of everything!! Cruffins, bagel bombs, cookies, sticky bun, stuffed English muffin.... Some other stuffed things. It was beyond delicious. We even felt special with that little teal box! I couldn't stray from the Cruffin after taking slivers of just about everything. Hubs adored the English muffin things and the kiddo said he was excited by everything. The sticky bun offered comedy as it was extremely sticky .... Almost served as a glue for our teeth. So sadly, that one is one we likely won't entertain again. Otherwise, it's worth the wait.

Yelp
Just go. Every bite is magnificent. EVERY BITE! So worth a drive. Sincerely amazing!!

R T.

Yelp
Absolutely delightful. The cheese pretzel, lemon cruffin, cheese sourdough and classic sourdough just AMAZING!!!! Still have choc cookies to try for dessert tonight! Very very friendly!

Jack R.

Yelp
Woman who worked there was very rude to us and our children for playing a PacMan machine, which was not very loud when nobody else was in there and the television was even louder. If they do not want children to play the game, perhaps they should remove it? Perhaps it's more kitsch they have on display? Our children were quiet and polite and this could have been handled differently. This was our first time in the bakery and certainly our last.

Yelp
Fantastic bread and some pastries. We got a dark rye recently that was phenomenal. All the breads we habe gotten were great. Good prices, friendly/helpful staff, baked on premises. Nice coffee options too. Indoor and outdoor seating. I think they sell out of some items so go early in the day if you can. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Best bakery I've EVER been to in the USA and I've lived and traveled all over They have competition in France cuz this is true work of art!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Best chocolate chip cookies ever. However, since the new owners took over, they don't know if they are coming or going. I called on a Wednesday to get a dozen cookies for my daughter and her friends who were visiting from NY because they love the cookies (hoping I could get them that day). I was told that the earliest they could get them done would be Friday. I said ok if that's the earliest. So I go to pick them up on Friday after like they said, and the girl working says they have them scheduled down for Saturday and they don't know who took the order. I said well my daughter is leaving on Saturday morning and there would be no one to eat them so cancel the order and I walked out to a car of disappointed kids who had been waiting days for the cookies. Now get this. I get a call from them Saturday asking if I ordered cookies for today because they won't be able to fill the order. Wait what? They don't even know what happened the day before? I will never set up my kids again for disappointment because of a bunch of incompetent people running that business now. I will never ever buy anything from them again and will tell everyone I can about it so they don't make the same mistake. No cookie is worth this nonsense. I never leave reviews unless I have something nice to say about a business but this experience was just unbelievable! I only wish the place was never sold.

Yelp
We recently discovered Virtuoso via the Batchmaker (who we also love, and miss). For my birthday, I decided this would work for breakfast. It was amazing. The cruffin was warm and full of berries, with a crispy outside and pillow soft inside. The stuffed English muffin was tasty, but I think it would be top notch were they to warm it up. Our strawberry danish was wonderful; the cream cheese and strawberry mix was light and tasty. We got a doughnut for our toddler. She devoured it despite the fact that it had no frosting (a feat). There is a loaf of Irish Cheddar bread and a croissant still waiting, but I'm sure they will be amazing as well. Absolutely the only bakery we've tried that is on par with the Batchmaker, and among the best we've had in Charlotte.
google avatar

Jen Y.

Yelp
This is our favorite place on Saturday mornings when we crave for buttery warm croissants, chocolate croissants and the Cinnamon Rolls! Walking in the door you are hit with the smell of butter and sweetness all at once. Everything they offer is amazing and recommend trying each one of their offerings. So far we have also tried their chocolate chip cookies - which did not make it home. It was devoured during the car ride. Can't forget the bagel bomb! Great concept for those that don't like messy cream cheese all over your hands. My second favorite is when they have the crumb cakes. I've tried several different flavors and it's all amazing!!! Now of course I can't forget the main attraction of Virtuoso! Homemade BREAD!! OMG - if you don't like sweets but craving the best homemade bread this is the place!!! Usually a line on Saturday mornings but so worth the wait!! Enjoy my foodies!!!
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
One of the best bakery's I have ever been to. We moved down south from up north and have been struggling to find that weekend spot to grab bagels. These bagels aren't boiled but they are AMAZING. The English muffins are tangy in a good way and the stuffed ones are something sent from heaven. I made sandwiches for family with the Pullman loaf and No one could stop talking about it for days. We also ordered an apple pie for thanksgiving and my father in law made it known it was the best apple pie he has ever had. AND THE CROISSANTS - just go in and see for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
The best bagel bombs ever. If you haven't tried this place, you should. For sure. Everything here is delicious. There's no denying.

Rachel P.

Yelp
There are no words to accurately describe the intense awesomeness of the quality, taste and service you will experience at this place!
google avatar

Jennie B.

Yelp
Holy Smokes!!! This is the real deal. I live in Charlotte and make it a point to drive out and devour these delightful, delicious, fresh gifts from the bakery gods. Seriously though, the owners are humble, honest and talented as they come. Their love is poured into each croissant, cruffin and sourdough loaf. Don't get me started on the Stuffed English Muffins and the Bagel Bombs!!! Virtuoso gives 2020 hope to the community that we all need to treat ourselves.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Really great food, and really really good baked goods. However, they have three people behind the counter and only wait on one person at any given time. This leads to 15 minute waits just to order a croissant, English muffin, or some bread. Very nice people, but very inefficient. Doesn't take much to move people in and out, and maybe put an emphasis on serving more than one person at a time.

Amy K.

Yelp
Ordered blueberry bagels a couple days before we wanted to pick up. Fortunately called morning of pick up, and whoops.....they forgot to enter the order. Not a major issue, but the day we picked up and brought home! These bagels were lucky to have 2 blueberries each. Some had none. Ordered because the first time we got them, they were LOADED with blueberries....every bite, and were delish. Not only were they lacking blueberries, but were very tough. Also picked up a type of peach coffee cake, in which we could hardly find or recognize the peaches. The bagel bombs, on the other hand are great! They did give us a partial credit on the 16 bagels we bought, but for that many bagels to have that few blueberries? Sorry, can't take a chance on the inconsistency.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
This is a delightful bakery with customer service as good as their baked goods. Highly recommend the stuffed muffins and any of their Danish. Truly wonderful!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
This pastry shop is little but MIGHTY! Lauren & her crew make FABULOUS sweet & savory creations that are irresistible. Go now.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about Lauren and the staff at Virtuoso. Everything they bake is super yummy, and we frequent the bakery at least 2-3 times a week. Their baked goods are always thoughtful and culinary masterpieces...all of the sweet items are made impeccably, and their savory stuff is what strikes my fancy. Try any of the following, you won't regret them: Dulce de leche cruffin, stuffed English muffin with sausage and white Cheddar, croissant cups with bacon, egg, and sautéed onion. Also, all of their sourdoughs are amazing as well. Their coffee, sourced from Enderly Coffee, is also top notch. Say hello to Ms. Jenny, Andrea, Erin, Lauren, and Mr. Brandon from us!

Kiersten W.

Yelp
I have been to Virtuoso a handful of times now and every experience has been fantastic! The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and nice. The bread and other baked goods are delicious. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Guya I.

Yelp
A plus!!! Well I have been tracking them for awhile. I used to live in Waxhaw and be able to order a few things, and then found some of their products at Union Market-- Baking in this level is amazing. I have only had a few to compare and not in this state, so this is truly the best baked goods in NC. They use the right top tier ingredients, every product is great value, and I think they are going to be a great success as they continue, and really choose to support local, we have to and they need it and the product is such higher quality! And soon they will have specialty espresso drinks!
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
So delicious! We stopped by and bought a variety of baked goods. We loved the stuffed croissant, bagel bomb, cinnamon rolls! Super cute shop and friendly service.

Jessica H.

Yelp
We love the staff here and the pastries are so delicious. Anytime we are in downtown Waxhaw, we stop here.
google avatar

Dixie Y.

Yelp
Our first time! We felt so welcomed Jenny took her time and explained everything to us in detail, which I totally appreciate. Cute bakery and the food is worth all the hype that brought us here. We will definitely be driving the 45 mins it takes for us to get there again! Thank you guys!

Nicholas B.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! Went in this morning for the first time and coming back every Saturday! Not only was the team kind and professional, but the stuffed sourdough English muffin is one of the absolute best things I have ever eaten! My 5 boys devoured the chocolate banana muffins and chocolate croissants! Thanks for your amazing service and comfort food!

Audrey G.

Yelp
Virtuoso is seriously legit. They would definitely get a handshake from Paul Hollywood. Everything they sell is outrageously good. Some of my favorites I've tried are: the sausage and cheese stuffed English muffins, the pecan sticky buns, and the apple danishes. And all the bread is wonderful! On top of having some of the best bread and desserts you can find, the service is top notch as well.

Zack Q.

Yelp
We got a sticky bun, a cinnamon roll, a chocolate chip cookie, and a Pecan Cookie. Everything was awesome. Cool set up inside. I will be back and I have already told friends how awesome everything was.
