This Summer’s Top Spots for Dairy-Free Frozen Treats

"Virtuous Pie made a name for itself in the vegan community thanks to its pizza, but its creamy coconut- and cashew-based ice cream draw just as many customers. At the airy, modern industrial cafe on Division, Portlanders can enjoy scoops of raspberry cheesecake and caramel macchiato in gluten-free waffle cones, three scoop flights, or ice cream cookie sandwiches. The brownie skillet with melty classic vanilla bean and gooey chocolate fudge is one of the shop’s standout treats for sharing. A pie and a pint make a good option for a picnic in the park." - Waz Wu

Where to Find Knockout Vegan Pizza in Portland

"Specializing in hand-stretched personal pizzas topped with nut-based cheese, this sleek and airy vegan pizzeria on Division delights with its classic Margherita and Stranger Wings buffalo cauliflower pie. The shop is also known for its inventive flavor combinations, like pear and cashew gorgonzola with garlic confit oil, candied walnuts, and fig jam. Although the pizza is the main attraction, other highlights at Virtuous Pie include garlic knots, mac and cheese skillets, gluten-free earl grey cannolis, and coconut- and cashew-based ice cream." - Waz Wu

We’ve been here a few times but not recently. The cauliflower pizza was passable as something resembling pizza but the Sweet Jane one was barely edible. $45+ for two 10” pizzas of this quality is absurd, especially considering other options in Portland for vegan pizza. Between the attitudes of the staff, the price and the quality they’ve lost two customers.

Google
Hands down the best vegan pizza I have ever had. Sizzler’s vegan pizza is just really crust, tomato sauce and toppings. Most places can’t get the cheese right. This place does the vegan cheese so well - the texture (the stretchiness and the chewiness) of the cheese is just like dairy cheese. After turning vegan, I had the rare craving for pizza (not meat really) and this place is perfect for that. The ice cream was also excellent.

Google
Trying something new and never had vegan pizza before. It was different but delicious. We got the Pesto CBR pizza and it was tasty. Was a good gluten free crust too which is hard to find. We ordered ahead because we weren’t sure the wait time to make a pizza but it was hot and ready for us after our 20 minute drive to get there. Would definitely come back

Google
We got takeout and had the ultraviolet and sgt pepperoni pizzas. Both had great flavor. The crust was thin but soft, not crispy. I generally prefer pizza that has crust with more structure (from being thicker or crispier), but that's just a personal preference. The pizzas were a little smaller than we hoped for, but we still really enjoyed them. We also got pints of the ballpark and the raspberry cheesecake ice cream, and they were delicious. The price on the ice cream pints seemed very reasonable for the amount you get. The only challenge with the ice cream was that it's a little hard when you first take it out of the freezer, so it's difficult to scoop. Overall, we liked everything we had here, and I'd love to try more of their ice cream flavors.

Google
We came here and got the amazing garlic knots, Margherita, and superfunghi. Everything was really tasty! There's a long ramp to enter.

Google
Lovely. Tried the classic pizza. Great sauce and "cheese". Well made. A little of that burnt thin crust style. Not my favorite but here it worked. The ice cream was excellent. Vietnamese coffee and seasonal Pumpkin. Note there is a weekly "happy hour" if you are curious but not sure.

Google
I was excited for this place being vegan and having gluten free options but unfortunately. Was underwhelmed with the gf pizza I had. It needed more of the ingredients for flavor. I’d try other food items though. Great customer service and good vibe.

Google
Absolutely phenomenal pizza. Plant based or not, the flavors, textures and selection will blow you away. The garlic knots are to die for, we tried the margherita pizza and loved it and ended our trip with the ice cream flight. Oh my word, those ice cream flavors were UNREAL. I asked my husband if we can come back every day.. sorry not sorry. New favorite restaurant.

Yelp
Portland Pizza Week is here! I tried two places today and it a fun discovering new pizza flavors. Don't miss out - the week is almost over! Here are some tips to make the most of it: 1 Explore nearby pizza spots and try different flavors. 2 Check out their special Pizza Week pies. 3 Note their open times as some places may have limited hours. 4 Vegetarians, fear not - there are plenty of veggie options available! 1. @virtuous_pie-Pepper Ann They had a really light and healthy taste, and the place itself was really cool, with an amazing dessert menu. It's a great spot for date night or hanging out with friends.

Yelp
Came in on a Tuesday around 3pm and the place was quiet. I was excited to try Virtouos pies out and sat down to look things over before I decided since I was the only guest in there.. The pizza was just okay so I ordered a side of marinara sauce and hot honey to dip the slices in.. both were $2 each and a small ramekin size. And served cold.. cold sauces for my hot pizza? hmm.. okay.. I ordered the spinach and artichoke dip to dip my slices instead.. pretty good. I liked this the most. I wasn't super stoked on my lunch so I decided to try a couple desserts to make the lunch better.. they were just okay too.. the seasonal canoli was supposed to be apple pie but instead came with apple pie cream and no actual baked fruit.. The guy at the counter was slow with ordering and making my drink.. meh..

Yelp
As I was waiting for my food, I watched one of the employees go smoke a cigarette, come back inside, not wash his hands, then grab food out of the oven with his bare hands, lick his fingers, touch the food again and then serve it to the customers.... He had a weird long mustache thing and neck tattoos, not against that, just so you can identify the guy. Also it took a 1.5 hours on a Sunday for my order to be ready and it wasn't very busy.

Yelp
Best vegan pizza I've ever had. My fiancé and I just moved to the city and we had the privilege of trying this place. I'm not vegan but I have a dairy allergy so I find myself eating at a lot of vegan places. This was awesome! We tried the garlic focaccia, Alfredo pasta, and the margherita pizza. The garlic focaccia did not disappoint, it was delicious! Pretty dry, so I would suggest getting a dipping sauce with it. I went for the garlic ranch and it was incredible. The Alfredo pasta changed my life. I haven't had Alfredo pasta since I stopped eating dairy like 8 years ago. This pasta was everything I wanted it to be, creamy, covered in Parmesan, and delicious. It's a good size for one person, which works out because you won't want to share it. The margherita pizza was amazing. I've only ever had 'ok' vegan pizza up until this point. You can hardly tell this is vegan, it's awesome! The crust is thin, the sauce is flavorful and not overpowering, the cheese is great, and it tastes even better dipped in garlic ranch. This might be my new favorite place. Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
We decided to try the pepper ann slice here for pizza week, and we didn't enjoy it very much. While there can be some leeway for vegan food lacking in flavor, this was far from acceptable. Every single component was below average in flavor. It was genuinely one of the worst slices we've ever eaten, worse than frozen pizza.

Food C.

Yelp
Great dairy free/vegan pizza! I have an allergy to dairy so I stopped by this pizza spot. Got three pizzas Hawaiian Super fungi And the other was like bacon and caramelizada onion! They were delicious but service was slow. probably 35 minutes and we were the only ones in there. Ambiance is nice and clean. Yummy food good vibes! Canollii was good!

Yelp
Amazing vegan pizza (also available by the slice) in a cool artsy space w extremely friendly service at reasonable prices. I don't eat pork & my gf is vegan so it's nice to find a pizza spot where we can both eat everything on the menu. Loved it!!!

Yelp
Appetizer: Garlic knots -3/4. Needs more garlic but bread is good. Pizza: MARGHERITA -4/5.Classic and yum. SUPERFUNGHI - 4/5. Would get this again. PIE-ROGI -3/5. Not a big fan of this one. Ice cream flight: Strawberry cheesecake? 5/5. Viet coffee -4/5. Chocolate Hazelnut -4/5.

Yelp
Although it was vegan I still actually liked it. For the most part I hate vegans. This place is an exception. The vibe was good and so was the food. I was served by a quirky orange haired girl with purple pants. I will definitely be coming back for the service alone, but the pizzas good too.
google avatar

Yelp
I believe this was a vegan mac & cheese and it was good! I am not a vegan of myself, but it was pretty tasty! It is definitely different from the usual mac & cheese, but highly recommended for all the vegans out there!

Anthony S.

Yelp
Amazing Vegan pizza, pasta and desserts. Their vegan chicken Alfredo was AMAZING, and so creamy, top tier, their pizza is just right, the crust is amazing, fluffy and crispy at the same time! Their service is quick, kind, and helpful!

Yelp
As we drove through we were looking for a vegan place to eat. Their food was so good the staff were nice and I feel for 3 people and it being vegan getting dinner and dessert was not a bad price. There was a lot of outside seating and the place looked cute.

Alyssa K.

Yelp
We waited 2 hours for our order and was told multiple times it was "being worked on". First ordered through Uber which was cancelled w out our knowledge then called to make pick up reagents, again told it was being worked on. My sister went to pick it up and they told her "another 20 minutes" which was past 1.5 hours of the original order. Sorry guys! No thank you!!

Yelp
I had a hankering for ice cream so I can only comment on that. Everyone was super friendly, and the space had a chill, clean vibe. The blue lavender ice cream was delicious and super creamy. Decadently refreshing if that's something that's possible. I'm sure I'll have pizza here at some point but for now the ice cream is good enough!

Yelp
We do takeout all the time and when I say this is the fastest service I am not lying. We had an estimated 30 minute wait and it was all ready in 7 minutes. Not only that but the food is absolutely fantastic. The service is incredible and the pizza is unbeatable. The pizza is always so satisfying and the mac and cheese is just a great comfort food. I have eaten at this location and the Vancouver and I can say they are also very consistent across locations. Nothing bad to say ever we love it here.

Yelp
When my friend and I had our flight delayed from Sac and we finally landed in PDX we already knew we were going straight to Virtuous Pie for some vegan pizza. This is what happens when two vegans from Sacramento land in Portland's wonderland of vegan foodie options. We indulge! We made it there shortly before closing and ordered two pies (Super Funghi and Stranger Wings), garlic knots, and scoops of Salted Caramel & Chocolate Pretzel ice cream. I've been to Virtuous Pie in Vancouver's Chinatown, but this was a first time for me at the Portland location. The pizza was good (especially the spicy Stranger Wings, which I prefered) but felt that everything was a tad overcooked. The garlic knots were even slightly burnt. Maybe we caught them on an off night because they were close to closing, but knowing their pizza from Vancouver I can say I've had better from them. Personally I'd also prefer Sizzle Pie if I had to choose between the two vegan pizza places, but I'm definitely not opposed to coming back here for more. I'd also recommend trying out the ice cream, because the flavors are creative and ever-changing. #2VS

Yelp
Had heard great things about this place and am looking forward to going back. We only stopped by for ice cream and homemade waffle cones this go round, but will definitely be back to try pizza, mac n cheese and other delicious goodies. We were kindly greeted upon walking in! We gave the Marionberry and Stawberry & Cream a shot. They were good flavors. Felt a bit overpriced for ice cream but it was still worth it. Looking forward to checking out additional menu items upon our return!

Yelp
I dream about this pizza, seriously. Wood fired, diverse flavors, amaaaazing ice cream--vegan?! I love it sm here.

Philip R.

Yelp
Love this place. Food is solid. Specials are always great. Got to check it out. Nice that there is parking outside.

Yelp
Touring from NYC and stopped in for lunch based on the positive experiences of my friends earlier in the day. Had the Little Italy pizza, and kale Caesar, berry crumble bar, and blueberry lime soda. It was add delicious. I could've eaten an entire pizza myself.
google avatar

Lotus E.

Yelp
Many pizza places have only one or two areas they excel in, but Virtuous Pie has completely solid appetizers, pizzas, mac and cheeses, and desserts. Everything on the menu is delicious! Garlic knots were a great appetizer. The bread was nice and soft. The mac and cheese pizza was my favorite out of the types I tried. And for dessert, the filling in the cannoli has the best texture out of any cannoli I've tried. It was definitely a non-traditional cannoli, with a seasonal (peppermint) flavored filling, and a waffle cone shell. It was surprisingly good! Service was great, and the environment was pleasant. The only downside is that I wasn't able to find a bathroom at this restaurant.

Yelp
I'm sorry. No. You can make this yourself at home and not spend 1/4 of the money. Cracker thin crust. No Flavor. High Price...for what? A tiny little pizza with vegan ingredients? I still don't get why it was so expensive. I was still hungry after eating here...No thank you.
google avatar

Trilby M.

Yelp
I love the pizza here! It's incidental that it's vegan, too. I love that it's vegan, but non vegan eaters love it, too. The service and ambiance are fine. No complaints here.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying a vegan pizza place. It was delicious and I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Best vegan pizza and crust we have found so far in PDX... in life.... Etc. focaccia was the bomb, crust was amazing and the buffalo sauce was indescribable. Please go here and try if for your self. We had the Sweet Mary Jane pizza with the kale Caesar 1,000 % happy we made the stop in.
google avatar

Yelp
I'll start off by saying that the food was good everyone was pleased their the last. However, customer service needs to be improved. the prices displayed on their In store menu are different from online. I ordered online while seated in the resturant and let the staff know that i would be dinning it (it was just easier to order line because the line was long). they assurement me that they understood however my meal was boxed up even though i sat at the table (a waste of boxes). so i opted to eat some of my food out of the cardboard box even though i told them i was sitting inside the restaurant. in addition i was charged a different price (more). And perhaps because my meal was boxed up i received smaller portion sizes in my salad and pasta orders.

Yelp
For our last meal while in Portland we wanted to try Virtuous Pie. SO SO SO SO glad we did! From the minute we walked in the people were extremely nice, the atmosphere is chill, and the pizza is the best I've had in a very long time. As a vegan who is also part Italian and a foodie I have expectations. Food should be an experience. This place delivered 100%. I had the Pie-Rogi pizza and my partner had the roasted street corn pizza (which is a seasonal, limited time offering). The food was so good we didn't talk the whole time. What else needs said? You can judge a good pizza by the quality of the crust. This one is thin, crispy, has structure (no limp, sad crust here!), and has a lot of flavor. Absolutely recommend this place! Like...now. Go now!
google avatar

Melinda G.

Yelp
This was amazing. Everything is vegan. The garlic bread knots were fresh and moist and the garlic ranch which is homemade was superb! I had the homemade Mac and cheese. I couldn't tell the bacon and were all vegan as I'm not vegan but wanted to try this place. I'm so glad I did! Amazing food. I can't wait to try their pizza. The customer service was excellent. Great quality of food and portions! Highly recommend this place!

Lindsay C.

Yelp
I'm so glad I was able to try this place!!! I ordered a lot and everything was so good! The little dippers, pepperoni pizza, pesto pasta were all amazing! I also tried the cannoli, cinnamon knots and the brownie + ice cream! I don't find vegan cannolis often, I'm so happy to have found one. I ordered online and my order was ready on time, great service! I'll definitely be back! I'm so mad I ate before taking photos!!
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
This is my new go to spot. Food was so good. Best pizza and the most amazing cannoli I've ever had in my life. I love Virtuous.
google avatar

Taj T.

Yelp
A bit overpriced for the size of the pie, but ya can't beat these fresh, vegan ingredients and the quality/creativity. The pizzas come out fast and the crusts are that perfect combo of crisped on bottom but chewy within. I couldn't believe it was all plant based protein, so I'm sure meat eaters would be satisfied here too! "Superfunghi" - bit too much arugula for my taste and could've used a splash of lemon or vinegar for some tang to balance out the earthy flavors, but I loved the creamy ricotta and fresh shrooms. "Sweet Pepper + Sausage" - the big winner! Loved the balance between spicy and sweet flavors. The vegan cheese is an odd creamy texture I've gotta get used to, but I loved the sausage. Nicely seasoned and generously portioned. Definitely one I'd come back for! "Kale Caesar Salad" - for $5, absolutely worth it. The creamy Tahini dressing saturates every bite of kale. You'll crave kale after eating this salad! The croutons were bomb!
google avatar

Kati P.

Yelp
WOW! WOW! WOW!! First time here tonight and we were so pleasantly surprised at how yummy our dinner was! I am a total pizza snob (from New Jersey) and completely approved of this gem of a place. I had the Margarita and it was perfect with cashew 'cheese' that honestly tasted like mozzarella, only better! The kale Caesar was pretty good, but the croutons were ridiculously hard and I was afraid I'd break a tooth! We'll definitely be back on our next trip down from Seattle!

Cori M.

Yelp
Best vegan pizza I have had, by far Try any pizza with their hot "honey". Incredible!! The focaccia bread is also amazing!!

Taylor L.

Yelp
Sad, tiny pizza for $15 Uneven cuts. Have eaten here before and it was much better.
google avatar

William N.

Yelp
We ordered 2 pies to share. Peppers and sausage & a pepperoni. I didn't quite notice the "cashew mozzarella" but saw sausage etc. I ate the entire thing and didn't notice it was vegan.... Y'all tricked me!!!! . Thank you for enlightening me to a healthier option, for myself and the planet.
google avatar

Eliza R.

Yelp
Great vegan pie! My mom and I went here after attempting to go to los gorditos across the way, finding it was closed. Don't go into this place expecting a non-vegan cheese flavor. The flavor combinations they choose complement the plant based cheeses well though, and the portion was the perfect size for me and my mom. We ate the whole thing and we're both too full for their delicious looking desserts. Staff was super friendly and service was quick.
google avatar

Mandii F.

Yelp
Best vegan pizza in Portland. Hands down. No other place compares and it satisfies the pizza craving for vegans and non vegans alike.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
Beautiful little space, excellent service with lovely people, incredible... I mean INCREDIBLE (vegan) food. The pizzas are so delicious (we got the Margherita & Superfunghi) as well as the garlic knots & kale Caesar AND... the ranch sauce holy forking shirtballs! Amazing place so happy to find it. Go to here. Enjoy

Alexia P.

Yelp
I expected better little disappointed in the cinnamon knots :( pizzas are pricey, but at least vegan as the option I only tried one pizza and it wasn't what I was expecting but not bad just a small pizza for price .. overall was a decent experience but don't know if I would go back. This was through door dash so mayb was not best being delivered

Victoria N.

Yelp
Virtuous pie has amazing food- their cheeses are always great and the specials are fun. That being said their lunch special is a bit of a rip-off (imo) for the price vs the amount of food received. Be sure to check out how much you get beforehand.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
Pizza was amazing. We ordered the margarita and the super fungi. Also plowed through some awesome garlic knots. Weirdly, the woman that helped us made it a point to tell us that she still ate dead carcasses... That was off putting just before eating. Food and atmosphere were great though. In the future, keep the carnage to yourself please. Better yet, get with the times, our planet is dying. Let's all do our part to stop the destruction and suffering of the innocent. Thanks.

Yelp
I'm not particularly Vegan, but when I find a good spot to try I'm always down for it. The pictures on Yelp looked really good. I probably should've read up a bit more to see which pizza was most posted about. I ended up picking one off the menu (the Pesto Pizza), one of the pricier ones at ($17). My husband ordered the Marghertia pizza and garlic knots. Both were amazing for Vegan pizza, my personal thoughts were, his tastes better than mine, definitely more like pizza. The pesto pizza wasn't what I was hoping for, delicious in its own way but definitely a little disappointed in my selection. The garlic knots were tasty though. We didn't order and ice cream unfortunately but it was available there. They had indoor seating and a lot of folks were picking up phone orders. This place is nestled into the corner of a little shopping building with a nail salon and a sandwich shop.

Christine P.

Yelp
I ordered a gluten-free vegan pizza and gf Alfredo pasta with roast chicken. I specifically told them nut free and my son was highly allergic. We got our food. Pizza left much to be desired but the pasta was tasty to me. Except my son wasn't a fan. Thirty minutes after we left my son became nauseous and his eyes began watering followed by profuse sneezing and vomiting. By the time we got home his face blew up like 3xs its normal size. I had to rush him to the hospital and this was our entire weekend.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Vegan pizza?? Count me in. We ordered the super funghi pizza, garlic knots and Mac and cheese to split between the three of us. We loved the pizza and the garlic knots. I didn't expect much from the garlic knots but I couldn't stop eating them! The pizza was really flavorful and I loved the potato purée on top. Ah so good!! One of the better pizzas I've had in my life. It wasn't badly priced too. Mac and cheese was just okay. I didn't feel like the flavor was there, but maybe that's because I'm not the biggest fan of cashew cheese. Would return!
google avatar

Louie M.

Yelp
I'm not vegan. This place is incredibly good. It deserves all the praise for being a great vegan pizza joint, but I think it does something better: they create great flavors for everyone.
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
It has the feel of a lunch friendly place with the customer doing all their own work to order, pick up and bus their own tables. There's really interesting choices of toppings on pizzas, and the creativity is appreciated when you're a vegan. They do have specialty non-alcoholic drinks, and some nice craft beer and ciders on tap. The wines are "red" and "white" so probably not going to meet the requirements of a refined palate. It's a good place to grab a vegan pizza pie and have a few slices left to take home.
google avatar

Danielle J.

Yelp
This spot hits my cravings each time. The garlic knots are great for sharing between two people, one piece is gigantic but so so good. The seasonal menu always keeps you on your toes and you can taste the freshness of the ingredients. Their online portal is so easy and user friendly it makes ordering pick up or delivery hassle free. Fun fact I didn't know: Once a week, Virtuous Pie donates any extra or unneeded food to Urban Gleaners to feed children and their families. I love establishments with such wholesome operating standards

Yelp
My gosh! The pizza was delicious, the kombucha refreshing, and the ice cream was satisfying. The perfect cherry on top! As an appetizer, we got the Mac and Cheese Skillet (Creamy Cashew Cheese Sauce, Macaroni Pasta, Bacon Bits, Parmesan, Parsley) you will not go wrong with this one! It was so rich and delicious. The flavors popped and the pasta melted in your mouth. Anything with cashew cheese is pretty darn delicious. I had the Ultraviolet Pizza which consisted of Walnuts, Arugula Pesto, Cashew Mozzarella, Oven-Dried Tomatoes, Kale, Caramelized Onion, and Pine Nuts. The boyfriend got the Sweet Pepper and Sausage which contained San Marzano Tomato Sauce, Cashew Mozzarella, House-made Italian Sausage, Red Peppers + Onions, and Hot Honey! I had the kombucha on tap and I believe it was seasonal so I think I had a rosé inspired Kombucha. It was not too sugary and not too strong which is how I like my kombucha. To add, the Bourbon Vanilla ice cream scoop with their homemade scone was to die for!! Normally with vegan ice cream, to compensate for the dairy, they add too much sugar and extra non-daily creamers and thus it makes the ice cream high in sugar and almost sorbet-like but this one was soft, did not taste too much like sorbet, and was not too sugary. But the cone....it literally broke if you were not careful and that is what makes it so special. You can taste that they had made it probably that morning. I, unfortunately, did not take a picture of it. Whatever you might be craving, they have it here. Pizzas, kombucha, desserts, coffee, tea, alcohol, happy hour, you name it! TIP: The restroom is not inside the facility but right outside, pass the hallway. Long lines... And yes, this place is all vegan. :)

Yelp
Oh boy were the pies here good! To me, they didn't taste like "regular" pizzas but they're very delicious in their own way. We tried the Superfunghi and Sausage pizzas. Off the bat, I noticed how much less greasy these pies are compared to their non-vegan counterpart. The crust was also incredibly crispy and tender at the same time, even after being left out for a bit. The fresh arugula on top of the Superfunghi was a nice finishing touch, adding a fresh end to the pie. The kale pesto was like nothing I've tried before and I really loved it. Meanwhile, the Sausage pizza had a sweet touch from the honey in the sauce that goes well with the sausage. I also really liked the open space and casual coffee shop ambience this place has. Would love to bring more friends here and try all the other pies.
