Richmond’s Rocky Island Oyster Co. to Reopen in Oakland’s Jack London Square - Eater SF

"Despite the well-publicized closure of the long-running bakery Vital Vittles in 2022, the Berkeley bread maker has been quietly continuing on, supplying loaves to Berkeley Bowl and Rainbow Grocery." - Dianne de Guzman

Like so many residents of the east bay was very happy that vital vittles returned to our local grocery store under new ownership. I purchased a loaf of whole wheat bread and within three days it started to mold two days before the expiration date. It was stored in a cool, dark place, and there was really no reason for this contacted the owners of the bakery through their website no reply. I have to say I’m truly disappointed the bread is still good, but if it turns moldy like that, I won’t be buying it again.

I bought a bread machine back in the day and tried to make a bread that was as nutritional. Epic fail! No preservatives, organic whole wheat is the real deal. I have to keep it in the freezer to prevent mold, but the flavor toasted is still outstanding. What a treasure hidden in the East Bay of San Francisco.

Unfortunately, this business was sold. The new owners decided to close the on-site bakery sales. This family bakery store is a great place. Loaves of whole grain bread, muffins, rolls and cookies are sold to the public here. Be sure to bring cash. That's the only payment accepted.

Best bread in the world, imo : ) Hearty, healthful, fresh, delicious. They stone grind their own (hard red winter) wheat, and you can taste the difference freshly ground flour makes. A good variety, all whole grain. My favorite bakery. Never a line too!

What's not to like about Vital Vittles? Their whole wheat cinnamon rolls are outstanding. The blueberry muffins sometimes don't hold together well because there are so many blueberries inside them. Apple walnut bread is yet another favorite. Definitely our favorite bakery!

No sliced bread compares from a nutritional, flavor and texture profile. The 3 seed bread is my favorite in particular. You can buy straight from the bakery. In SF I typically get at rainbow foods

Google
Five stars but… they were closed when I arrived. I got there during the working hours stated here and they weren’t open. I called the number on their sign outside and no one picked up. Don’t know what the deal is and come to think about it, I’ve never seen the gate open. So maybe they no longer have a retail side?? You can get their bread at Berkeley Natural Grocers.

Whole grain addiction, and I love how well the bread and rolls freeze. My daughter bought me a chocolate blueberry muffin (my doubtful face) which I ate. I just sent her a text- that next time she buys me all the chocolate blueberry muffins. Mine. All mine.

Yelp
They've had a tent at the farmers market in Concord, and I was looking forward to seeing them. I wanted to buy some of their breads and see what they had. The employee was super nice and friendly and rang me up really kindly. Given that it was a farmers market, it was noisy, but I was able to use regular noise level to communicate. I ordered the potato rosemary, and it has an amazing scent when you waft it. All I wish I had was some salted butter to go with it. That said, I was really impressed that it was still fresh. Farmers markets can hit-or-miss as far as quality goes, and mine was really fresh. I absolutely recommend this place.
