Vitalogy, a New Printer’s Row Bar With Pub Fare, Debuts | Eater Chicago

"On a recent weekday visit to a ground-floor bar in a 142-year-old Printer’s Row brick building, I found a welcoming neighborhood hangout with weekly specials and a lively happy hour; rainbow decorations were up for that evening’s Pride celebration, and the 18-seat wood-topped bar was nearly full with solo imbibers and couples. Owners Jennifer Wilson and James Shields—who live on the street—aim to uplift the neighborhood with community events, cocktail classes, and live music, and they’ve built a travel- and Chicago-inspired drinks list: beers ranging from Spain’s Estrella and Belgium’s Delirium Tremens to local Old Irving and Printer’s Row, plus a few wines, non-alcoholic options, and THC- and CBD-infused drinks. Of the 10 house cocktails, Shields is especially proud of the Second City Milk Punch, a clarified milk punch with Jeppson’s Malört that he admits is 'not everybody’s cup of tea,' but it draws plenty of compliments; seasonal cocktails use fresh herbs grown in a hydroponic garden inside a glass-enclosed wine room at the back. Though food wasn’t in the original plan, an aldermanic nudge led them to bring in a French-trained neighbor as consulting chef; working with just a convection oven and an induction burner, the team turns out small plates like roasted nuts and chickpeas and chicken and steak skewers, larger plates like beef and vegan cheeseburgers on brioche, and desserts including a chocolate chip cookie skillet, a root beer float, and a THC creamsicle soda. The 1,300-square-foot space reflects the area’s vibe with reclaimed touches—a vintage leaded-glass door among them—after a three-year build-out with a veteran carpenter whose work on Chicago bars concluded not long after. The name nods to the building’s printing-house past: a glass case displays a 1916 health-and-wellness encyclopedia titled Vitalogy (and, as a bonus, it’s also the name of a Pearl Jam album). Open 4 p.m.–10 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 4 p.m.–12 a.m. Friday, 12 p.m.–12 a.m. Saturday, and 12 p.m.–10 p.m. Sunday." - Lisa Shames

Google
Fantastic addition to the Printers Row neighborhood. A real neighborhood bar showcasing good cocktails. Super friendly staff. Food menu is limited but surprisingly good. This area of Printers Row now has several great bar choices within a minute or two walk of each other. Great destination.

AMAZING! I've already gone twice in a week. The cocktails are fun and beautiful, and the food absolutely blew me away! Chicken / steak skewers and the steak tartare were wildly flavorful and delicious. We also had a burger and cookie skillet which I'll be coming back for again and again.

Google
Vitalogy is amazing. The drinks, the food, and the ambiance are all exceptional. I highly recommend the chicken and shrimp skews - the tofu ones are amazing as well! Can’t wait to come back and try the cheeseburger. It looks fantastic. Too many amazing cocktails to choose from. I highly recommend.

My first time coming was with my husband, and he had been here a few times before me. He loves the place. I didn’t have a drink because I wanted to feel the vibe. The mixologists were super sweet and kind. They even remembered my husband from before. I really enjoyed the whole vibe. Tonight we came back to have dinner and the smash burger is SUPER GOOD. 👍 I also had Dante’s Inferno and it’s a great cocktail. I have worked in cocktail lounges before and this one is of high quality. It’s also feels very queer centric and lgbtq+ 🏳️‍⚧️ 🏳️‍🌈 friendly ❤️. Highly recommended ☺️!! Also his drink was the southbound sidecar.

Google
Hidden gem! The cocktails were excellent, particularly the snowbird seasonal one. The food was also excellent steak tartar was served on thin toasted slices of bread and the whipped ricotta was served w warm flat bread and was quite filling. They also had live music. Service was incredibly attentive. Would come back!

Google
We came here to try the steak tartare, which was excellent although we generally prefer a bread base than a potato. The cocktails, Beeside and Magnificent Miel, we tried were also both excellent--both just the right balance of liquor flavor and the other flavors. We also shared the chicken waffle cone, which was a lot lighter and more delicious than anticipated. My wife and I both really enjoyed it and highly recommend Vitalogy for a drink and a small meal.

Google
Perfect spot for a night out or casual drinks with friends. The vibe feels more like a stylish lounge than a typical bar — beautiful décor, fun and welcoming staff, and amazing drinks. The steak skewers were delicious!! Such a great addition to the Printers Row neighborhood. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
We absolutely love Vitalogy—it’s the perfect addition to the neighborhood! The burger is hands down the best I’ve ever had, and the drinks are always so creative and delicious. The ambiance is uplifting every time we visit, and the staff consistently goes above and beyond to make the experience special.

Yelp
Vitalogy on Dearborn is probably my favorite and go-to spot in all of Chicago right now. Let me get the best part out of the way first: their steak skewers during happy hour are the best-kept secret in the city. They've singlehandedly brought me back for happy hour more than 10 times in the past year--and I don't even live in Chicago. Every time I'm in town, this is a must-stop, and those skewers are the driving force. They're marinated in what tastes like a Korean-style marinade and finished with a spicy aioli drizzle. They are absolutely unbelievable--and I eat a lot of meat at a lot of places. The vibes are just as strong as the food. It's like a speakeasy meets a fancy dive bar meets a neighborhood hangout, with smooth jazz and piano-bar energy layered in. It just works. I recently went during their Christmas special, which was especially cool because each drink on the special menu was crafted by a different bartender. It really shows how much effort they put into connecting with their guests. For both happy hour and regular drinks, I usually go with an Old Fashioned. If you're a fan, they make a great one--and it fits the vibe perfectly. My advice: start with happy hour (they'll hook you), and go from there.

Yelp
I'm struggling here: new Printers Row location / you want them to do well for the neighborhood. Because they are new - let's cut them some slack. While the space is cozy, and the staff are friendly (wish they didn't vape while on-the-clock), the flatbread was "flat"; however the charcuterie board is a good option ($28/large); cocktails start at $18 (gulp), and wine pours are weak (under 4 oz pour. At $18/glass a an extra ounce or two would make a difference (neighborhood). My guest decided that she would not return; as she reminded me: it's $18 plus tax & tip or $23.50 for a small glass of wine. Because I'm in the neighborhood I'll continue to support it. Ideally, they'll take a second look at their wine pours & decide.

Yelp
Excellent and friendly service. Cool vibes. The drinks were alright but I don't think I ordered well, so I want to come back and try again. First, I ordered the "Second City Milk Punch" with prosecco, Malort milk punch, and glitter. I like prosecco and the glitter looked cool. I just moved here so I was unfamiliar with Malort and I got a rude awakening with how sour it was and I couldn't handle it. Reyna was very kind and let me try a new drink instead. I can't remember what it was. It was okay, but I guess not memorable, but definitely better than my first drink. My boyfriend enjoyed Dante's Inferno. I definitely want to return and try more drinks and find my favorite. I would also like to try their THC and CBD drink options. The menu is cool. I would also like to try the food. The dessert menu looks great.

Yelp
My husband and I had cocktails here recently before heading to an improve show nearby. We had a good time the drinks were good! Their menu is not very large, which I actually appreciate. I had a Dante's Inferno, because I love mezcal and my husband had an old fashion. We both really enjoyed our drinks. The cocktails are $18. Which I think may be on the pricier side but most bars in Chicago have their cocktails priced like this. There are a lot of tables and a long bar for ample seating. When we went; it was a Friday night around 7pm. We didn't have trouble getting a table. Their menu staff is nice and the place is rather clean. We didn't try any of their food but maybe next time!

Yelp
This is a very cozy and inviting cocktail bar in Printer's Row. Service was fast and friendly. I only enjoyed one drink, the Maester's Study, and it was absolutely incredible. I wish I had been able to try another cocktail and sample the food menu. Next time...and there will definitely be a next time!

Yelp
First time at Vitalogy, had been wanting to check this place out for awhile. My lovely wife took me here for my birthday and the cocktails did not disappoint. I had the Dante's Inferno, which was quite smoky and robust in flavor. She had the Low Voltage, which was really refreshing. The bar nuts were quite tasty. Service was super friendly. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
One of the newer places in the neighborhood. Still haven't eaten there but it's a fun space for drinks. Good service, pretty buildout of the space, creative cocktails, decent beer selection...just a bit pricy. But, sign of the times, eh? If you are in the neighborhood, pop in!

Yelp
Fun, casual, live music venue - drinks are clever and taste great, the small portion charcuterie board is perfect for a light snack.

Yelp
Stop me if you've heard this one before ....two sad Dallas Cowboys fans walk in to a bar ...no but really after leaving a pitiful game where we lost we were immediately greeted by sweet Austin and Talon! When I was having doubts on my choice Talon wholeheartedly suggested the old fashion which turned out to be perfection !!! I had a taste of my buddies martini and it too was simply delicious!! Both Talon and Austin held great conversation and were very attentive to us!! If our ride hadn't arrives so quickly I would have loved to have stayed longer ! They just made the vibe feel real nice !! The place is gorgeous ! I loved everything about it !! I want to go back next time I'm in Chicago ! YOU should go!!

Yelp
Vitology on Dearborn is an excellent spot -- intimate, moody, and exactly what you want in a proper cocktail bar. The service was outstanding from start to finish, attentive without being overbearing. I had the Dante's Inferno, and it was fantastic -- perfectly balanced and thoughtfully crafted. Whether you're stopping in for one drink or settling in for the night, I'd absolutely recommend Vitology.

Yelp
I was surprised by this place. Before now moody tongue was the only other establishment in south loop where you could get an above average cocktail. Balance was there, no particular ingredient outshined the other & the drink was potent to say the least. A bit on the pricier side imho but nonetheless I have place to satisfy my hard to please palette near my home.

Yelp
Vibrant cocktail spot in heart of Printer's Row. Perfect for a date spot or for solo dining for those that like a good drink accompanied by a tasty bite. It's a concise menu of the usual shareable American classics (flatbreads, charcuterie, skewers). The space has a great vibe, friendly / prompt service, and well mixed cocktails. We checked out for happy hour - thoroughly enjoyed everything but the highlights were the old fashioned cocktail and steak skewers. Definitely a spot for the rotation!

Yelp
Cocktails, service and ambience are all great. It's a very small place but very chic and cozy, would be a great date place. Husband and I split the cheeseburger and it was well-prepared and tasty. Overall, I love this new addition to Printer's Row and can see myself becoming a regular!

Yelp
We popped in here for the first time today and were very pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back. The brie flatbread was delightful and all of the cocktails had at our table were unique and fun. Servers were attentive and very quick.

Yelp
Such a nice welcoming atmosphere! The bartender introduced himself and asked our names as we sat at the bar for great cocktails. Beautiful, creative and delicious. We could see the care the bartenders took in preparing them. The $10 charcuterie board was a steal as a happy hour special. It will become a regular stop on my visits to my friend who lives in the South Loop. Printers Row is definitely a "must visit" area when south of IB Wells.

Yelp
Came here with some friends on opening night! The owner (James) and our bartender (Austin) as well as everyone else behind the bar were very nice. I thought it all went very smoothly for having just opened. James had Austin make me a complimentary off-menu drink with brandy (not normally my go-to) and surprisingly I loved it!! Their cin cin martini was good and the second city milk punch was beautiful. I think Dante's Inferno might have been one of my favorites. There was definitely a lot of heat to it without being too painful (though the feeling also lingered ). A fun little spot to check out!

Yelp
Cocktails were fantastic. Our bartender took the time to help guide us to best choices for each of us.

Yelp
Drinks were amazing and the vibe of the place was most excellent. Our daughter took us here when we visited her and we were impressed.

Yelp
Cute place with fancy cocktails. I appreciated the fun mocktail options, Casa del sol had a nice citrusy flavor.

Yelp
Friendly staff, nice cozy atmosphere. Drinks are pretty good and the burger is delicious. It's a nice new addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Vitalogy is a great bar for gin, offering a huge selection and expertise in mixing. They make one of the best Botanist martinis we've had anywhere. Their specialty mixed drinks are also well conceived and prepared. However, I've found their beer and wine selection to be a little underwhelming; but this place is really more about cocktails anyway. They offer some nice food bites.

Yelp
New craft cocktails and small plates spot in Printer's Row. Drinks were excellent as was the steak skewer. Ambiance is lively and cozy. Service was excellent. Will be back!

Yelp
tonight was our first time in to the restaurant, and it was really good. We loved the vibe and the way the decor feels around you. Our bartender was Tallon (sp?), and we had the sugar maple, old-fashioned, and Dante's Inferno... Both were very very well prepared. Don't let the plates menu fool you... The food was top shelf!

Merry S.

Yelp
Vitology is a welcome addition to Printers Row. The owners live in the neighborhood, too, and their hospitality embraces customers with warmth and consideration. The food tastes great and is innovative. Drinks are a bit scant but well-prepared. Service is friendly and on task. The elegant, NYC-bar feel adds to one's relaxation. All in all, highly recommended.
