PRO-TIP: Yelp Check-In for a free topping !
Trust me when I say that I really, really wanted to like this place. Especially with how unique the drinks are, their efforts in revitalizing the down town area, and the fact that they care so much about the community (supporting local artists, offering information about outreach and support services and resources, etc.).
There's plenty of street parking, even on a Saturday afternoon and there wasn't much of a wait getting our drinks. They have shirts, stickers, and other merch for sale, as well as some baked goods. Also really neat that they have Zodiac inspired drinks and that you get a discount if it's during the time of your sign!
I have to admit that I love the mural of the city on the wall. It's so fun and neat to see where you are and recognize nearby places. I also liked the bulletin board in the back with all the community support.
We got the:
1) Moon Milk with boba:
-It's a butterfly blue tea mixed with milk and lavender. It's topped with seafoam salted whipped cream.
-This was the one that I really wanted to try the most since it looked very cute aesthetically and sounded very unique.
-Unfortunately, I was so disappointed.
-I wanted to adjust the sweetness, but I was advised not to since it would diminish the lavender taste and just make it just a simple milk tea, so I decided not to.
-It was insanely, insanely sweet, even with mixing it and allowing the ice to melt. I could not taste any of the earthiness of the tea and I could barely taste the lavender. It mostly tasted like sugar milk with an after taste of something akin to a sweet onion?!?
-I'm not sure what even caused that since I've had butterfly tea and lavender teas in the past before. Either way, I did my best to drink until the half way point until I just had to toss it since I was starting to feel sick and get a nasty headache from it as the day went on.
-The boba was also extremely hard in the center. Texture was similar to chewy tendons. Very light brown sugar flavor. Should have gotten a different topping...
2) Matchata:
-Their spin on matcha + horchata.
-Nice earthy matcha flavor that's balanced out with the cinnamon sweetness of horchata.
-I let all the ice melt in this one after drinking the moon milk, and it made this much more appealing.
-Sweetness was not adjusted, but I enjoyed this!
3) Abuelita Cold Brew:
-It's cold brew coffee sweetened with Abuelita syrup with milk.
-Since it's sweetened by the syrup, sweetness adjustments can't really be made with the drink.
-Very spicy chocolate taste to it that's balanced by the bitterness of the coffee.
-It's not bad, but it's extremely dense and thick. Definitely sip it over an extended period of time or have water or milk on hand.
Maybe I just ordered the wrong things here, I'm hoping...
