Yelp
Did anyone else know on Yelp that tucked away on Argyle, hidden in plain sight, is a tofu master, a genius of bean curd?
A friend of mine brought me here - how the hell he knew about this place I have absolutely no idea, but holy moly, the stuff they make is amazing - this is sort of like tofu heaven - if, of course, you like tofu.
They make a million different kinds of fried tofu here - lemongrass, cilantro, with onion and spices, with mushrooms, in cubes, in rolls, in slices. They make sweet , soft tofu with sweet sauce (there's a name for this I can't remember) in a giant pot that he keeps behind the counter.
Now, you have to keep in mind that tofu in most parts of Asia is not a meat substitute; it is a delicious high protein food by itself, so although I don't think I saw anything with pork or meat the last time I was in there, I would ask - if, again, that isn't your thing... and for me, it isn't.
The man who runs (I presume owns) this place always has a HUGE smile and is always super happy, and has a great laugh. You come in, collect from the counter the hot tofu that you want - you can ask what each is if it is unclear - then you head for the cash register, and pay essentially nothing for all of it. Everything is super inexpensive, and super, super delicious. The stuff he keeps in the refrigerator also looks delicious, but I haven't tried it yet.
Needless to say, this is becoming a staple of mine. The whole place is very low-frills - but judge it for the food, and you'll be very happy.
