NYC Restaurant Closings, June 2024 | Eater NY

"I noted that Voilà Afrique, a counter-service West African restaurant opened in 2020 by George Quainoo (from Ghana) and chef Margarete Duncan (from Nigeria), closed earlier this year; the space has been vacated and the owners have since opened a New Jersey–based catering company." - Luke Fortney

The Best West African Restaurants in New York City | Eater NY

"Owner George Quainoo is from Ghana and chef Margarete Duncan grew up in Nigeria, resulting in this tag-team restaurant with food from both countries. Kenkey, a fermented cornmeal mash wrapped in corn husks, comes from Ghana, while Nigeria is responsible for the peanut-dusted beef suya. Sauces are the focus of most main courses here, including egusi made from pumpkin seeds, and a novel peanut sauce that’s vegan. Pair them with rice or a mash for a full meal." - Robert Sietsema

Voilà Afrique in Midtown Serves Captivating Ghanaian and Nigerian Food - Eater NY

"Voilà Afrique, located on East 45th Street near the United Nations headquarters, offers a counter-service experience with a menu featuring dishes from Ghana and Nigeria. Unlike typical steam-table West African restaurants, Voilà Afrique emphasizes authentic cuisines with options like plantain fufu, ugali, kenkey, and a variety of sauces such as egusi and peanut butter stew. The restaurant also offers vegetarian options and specials like beef suya and African fish and chips. It provides a unique taste of Ghanaian and Nigerian cuisine in Manhattan." - Robert Sietsema

A New African Restaurant Could Be Heading to the South Loop | Eater Chicago

"A Lakeview West African restaurant that closed in 2016, it was owned by Emmanuel Abidemi, a Nigerian restaurateur. The menu featured West African staples such as fufu — a starch pounded in a mortar and pestle, boiled, and formed into rounds — along with other Nigerian dishes. The restaurant has been shuttered since 2016 and the block where it stood was later demolished amid redevelopment around Wrigley Field." - Ashok Selvam

Google
Voila Afrique did not disappoint! I ordered the pounded yam with oxtail and goat soup, and it was packed with rich flavor and the perfect amount of spice. My mom had the chicken with tomato stew and jollof rice, and she loved every bite. Everything tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and authentic. We both truly enjoyed our meals and will definitely be back!

Price went up 3 bucks due to tariffs, but doesnt matter (to me at least). Food is very delicious and made with love. You enter the market and make a beeline to the left. Theres no seating, but this is a farmer's market; not a food court or restaurant. I got the fufu combo which is fufu, a sauce, and protein. If you care to know what I really got- I ordered plantain fufu, eggusi, and oxtail. Also got a jollof taster (which is in an 8oz container) for $3 on the side. It was so tasty. Everything rang up to about 21 something. I got 3 meals out of it; lunch and dinner (with help from my sister) The portions are good. Dont have any pics of the food cause i was busy chowing down 🙂‍↕️

Google
i normally don’t leave reviews, but i absolutely had to for this place. everything was amazing from start to finish. we were honestly lost for words. i had the jollof rice with salmon and it was cooked perfectly, so flavorful and fresh. my mom had the fufu with egusi and fish and loved it just as much. on top of that, the owner was incredibly kind and even gave us some donuts, which were really good. amazing food, amazing service, and such a welcoming atmosphere. we’ll definitely be back

I ordered the egusi with beef and pounded yam. It is the first time I tried egusi. I have been so curious about fufu & egusi my whole life because I’ve been seeing it all over my tiktok. I ordered in Uber and i was choosing between 2 restaurants but I’m so glad I bought here cause their egusi is so so so good!!! Very tasty!! Worth the money!! I’m so amazed.

Delicious and affordable! The place is takeout-only so you’ll need to find seating elsewhere. Flavors were intense. The fufu slid smoothly on the tongue and tasted so clearly of cassava. The egusi was infused with fish and extra umami (crayfish powder?)—I want to eat this regularly! And the jollof rice had the classic aromatic tomato base, but the version here had a good deal more oil for richness. Such a lovely meal.

Google
First time here and this place is definitely a hidden gem! The owner is so welcoming and helped me pick out some options. We had a few different fufu combos and while each was awesome in its own right, I think I'm going to be dreaming about the okra stew!! Will definitely be back soon! Thank you for an awesome dinner!

Google
I came here with my Nigerian friend. The storefront in the pictures does NOT exist - it’s a food counter in the back of Giant Food Market with no seating. The menu was confusing and not intuitive. Although Latina’s are behind the counter, there is no way they are making the Nigerian food. The engusi was good but the jolaf rice was bland. The peanut sauce had good flavor and it was tasty overall. Next time I’ll drive the extra time to Newark for better Nigerian food.

This place is a hidden gem! Tucked away in a small space at the back of a market, but filled with BIG flavors and even BIGGER hospitality! We were immediately welcomed by a lovely woman named Margaret. Her big smile and warm personality invited us in to a delicious lunch experience. She gave us a taste of her jollof rice as we waited for our order to be prepared, and we instantly knew we were in for a treat! The oxtail and chicken were delicious as well! And the prices are extremely reasonable! Thank you, Margaret, for your welcoming smile, your warm hug goodbye, and your delicious food! We will definitely be seeing you again soon!
