While on an Airboat Adventure Swamp Tour, our boat operater told me about this place. I asked him where he likes to go for seafood in New Orleans and he said that he doesn't go into New Orleans for seafood. He said the best seafood is right here in the bayou.
I took his advice and turned to yelp for some suggestions. When I found this place on the yelp app, I was a bit hesitant because although they have a 4.5 star rating, there was only 40+ reviews. All my skepticism vanished once I read that the reviews were written by travelers and not local folks.
The food here is exceptional. The seafood comes from local fisherman and their boats are right next to the restaurant on the water. Take a look at my photo. The recipes are authentic cajun and the place is family owned and operated. Inside has a lot of character with trinkets and other sea worthy items adorning the walls. The staff is super friendly and personable. Our server was super cute in the way she communicated and her upbeat personality. Here's what we ordered:
Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, 5.0 stars
This was theeeeee best gumbo I have ever tasted! I always thought that gumbo was made with a roux to produce a thick stew like consistancy, but not according to our server. Apparently, real cajun gumbo is like a soup, not a stew. This gumbo was full of tender, shredded chicken, andouille sausage, shrimp, tomatoes, onions, black pepper and rice. It was so flavorful with the consistancy of a soup. Almost like homemade chicken soup with lots of black pepper, fresh poultry and seafood. Simply put, it was like a big ole hug from my momma.
Seafood Platter, 5.0 stars
This blew me away! I came to New Orleans knowing that I would eat some of the best seafood dishes in the world. I never thought that my best seafood ever eaten would be from the Louisiana Bayou and not from New Orleans. I have some friends that gave me suggestions on where to eat during my trip. Evidently, none of them have gone to the bayou to eat the freshest stuff possible. The batter was super light and crispy. It held no heavy oil, so the platter was light with the flavors of the seafood coming through with each bite. I was in complete Seafood Heaven with the fresh oysters, shrimp, fish, crab-stuffed shrimp and crab-stuffed crab!
Green Salad with Bleu Cheese Dressing, 3.0 stars
This was your run of the mill, ice berg lettuce house salad with packaged bleu cheese dressing. The lettuce was fresh, but the dressing was less than stellar. Well, it was okay, but not on pair with the main entrees.
Simply Wonderful find in the Bayou! I will be back on my next visit to The Big Easy and so should you!
