The Ultimate Mocktails of Philly | Eater Philly

"Opened in 2022, Volstead made history as Philadelphia’s first zero-proof bar and restaurant. Offering one of the city’s most extensive menus of mocktails and non-alcoholic beverages, diners can explore the breadth and depth of non-alcoholic spirit culture and even purchase something from its bottle shop to take home." - George Banks-Weston

Great experience at Volstead! The food was good, but the drinks, the atmosphere, and our server Kelly really stood out. The espresso martini was incredible—one of the best I’ve had. Kelly was super friendly, gave great recommendations and made my day. Highly recommend!

This place is pretty neat on the inside. The decor setting is an old-time bar. They call it a Speak Easy, which it looks like on the inside, but you wouldn't know it from the front entry. For food, I got the fish-n-chips, which was better than I have had in many years. They use light breading so the fish is cooked perfectly. All the other places around seem to use a lot of breading that looks cooked but is always gooey on the inside, so hats off to these guys. They also have several other fish dishes, so I will be back to try those. Overall, this is a great place to hang out with your friends or significant other.

Google
Volstead delivered a truly wonderful experience: The drinks, service (Otis deserves a special mention for his politeness and attentiveness), and food were all exceptional. The cozy atmosphere created a perfect ambiance. Even in the bathroom... Had to get a picture 🤭, I loved the tile. There was a very clear attention to detail all around. A couple of minor things I wanted to mention: the menu font was quite small, making it a bit challenging to read (especially in the dimly lit setting). Would also love to see recommended dishes and beverages highlighted on the menu to enhance the experience (everything we had was worth highlighting! 🤍). The lights were initially at a pleasant dim level, but were later adjusted to a point that I started to feel sleepy (can't really tell from my pictures as I brightened them up). The old fashioned was perfectly crafted, and the chicken sandwich, skinny fries, and shrimp appetizer were absolutely divine. I'm already dreaming of those shrimp! Highly recommend.

Super cute, eclectic speakeasy style bar and restaurant. Both drinks and food are delicious and service was great and friendly. We came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday after playing some games at activate and had a great time.

Google
Such an adorable and romantic spot with delicious food. We started off with the sampler appetizer, for entrees we ordered the french dip sandwich and the honey truffle chicken, then finished off with the crème brûlée. Everything was perfectly cooked, steaming hot, and absolutely delicious. So glad we chose this place for our date night.

Nice ambiance with great cocktails and food. We went for dinner and everything we ordered tasted so good. Service was so quick and staff are super nice and friendly. Would love to try their brunch options as well. Will definitely return!

Google
Place is amazing! Great pizza with $10 burgers for happy hour! Slade did a fire job on serving today. Great speakeasy vibe!

Google
I stopped in to try out their espresso martini, but the speakeasy vibe and the bartenders stole the show. I would lower the lighting just a smidge and turn up the temp a degree or two as 67/68 was a bit too cold to be comfortable coming in from the Texas heat. I would be interested in trying some of their food options when I go back!

Yelp
Drinks were chilled, food was great, staff were dressed in character and attentive, and really good ambiance. Its a small bar but really fun for happy hour. I was there with about a dozen ladies. They took really good care of us!

Yelp
Friendly service, cool atmosphere and food was good and quality. Happy hour is a nice deal. Definitely a return visit!

Yelp
This was our 2nd time with friends coming to Volstead. We went right after happy hour so no 1/2 price martinis for us this time. The atmosphere of this speak easy is a little upscale without being stuffy. Our table was a great spot to watch the bartender & people watch. I always judge a place by their espresso martini & I'm a picky one. This one was so good! You could taste the espresso & it was the right amount of creaminess. My friend & hubby got dirty martinis & enjoyed. The blue cheese olives were so good & not mushy. My friend's hubby got an old fashioned & said he enjoyed it. For our meal, we ordered a couple of apps to share & I ordered the miso sea bass for the 2nd time. My sea bass was cooked perfectly & so good. No idea what the sauce is that they smear on the plate & drizzle on the fish, but it's amazing. Nice size portion of fish too. My husband had the Prohibition Sampler & enjoyed the crab cake & Rockefeller oysters. He said the beef Wellington bite was more of a deconstructed version & just ok. For his meal, he had the poblano soup & said it was very flavorful. Our friends shared the spinach artichoke dip & the hot honey pepperoni flatbread on the cauliflower crust (gluten-free option). They both said the pizza was very good & a big portion. They enjoyed the spinach dip too. Our server brought my friend sliced cucumbers so she had a gluten-free option for the dip. The service, food, & drinks were all outstanding. We'll definitely be back & will try to make it to happy hour next time.

Yelp
Pretty dead at 6pm on a Saturday night. Just a couple of loud couples at the bar. Almost felt like the Z Grill crowd found a new place since their closure. #iykyk Drinks and food were decent. Odd that they brought everything all out at once. Salads. Soup. Entree. The small table filled up pretty quickly. Not sure what the point of that is?

Yelp
I just love the drinks here and the vibes of this place! Everyone working here was very upbeat. The strawberry mule was incredible! The layout is gorgeous. Unfortunately, food-wise I'll need to try more items. The popcorn chicken was okay, but needs more sauces than ketchup. The fries are okay. The pressed tuna sushi's rice was really hard and had a slight refrigerated taste. I still gave it four stars because I'd love to get drinks here again.

Yelp
Volstead is probably the best customer service experience I've had in a Bar setting since I came to the DFW area. It is a true to concept prohibition bar - dark, cozy, WELCOMING, yet quiet enough for m, a solo session or intimate conversation but also enough energy for a festive happy hour or cocktail meetup. So far I have only been there for happy hour - which is great (2-6p M-F) in comparison to nearby alternatives. I love places that have a set happy hour menu you can count on! Above all the 4 stars are for service. This is a place where the bartenders make eye contact, introduce themselves, ask you your name, and are attentive and actually make real conversation! I recommend Volstead to anyone looking for a sophisticated, low key, welcoming spot to enjoy - solo or with friends.

Yelp
We checked this place out for a date night and it did not disappoint! The interior is super cool looking and the bar and drinks were a big hit with my husband. Our service was awesome, the waitress and manager checked in with us frequently and were incredibly attentive. Everything came quick, hot and with all the modifications requested. Now the food was delicious and we tried items from the raw bar, appetizer menu, entrees and dessert. Everything was so good but my favorites were the prohibition sample, specifically the crab cakes. As a Maryland girl I have never had a Maryland style crab cake in TX that tasted as good as this one. I also really enjoyed the spicy salmon crispy rice. It is presented in a sushi style but has more of a smoked salmon flavor that worked incredibly well with the avocado and Asian flavors. Finally, the serving sizes were really great. We shared the fish n chips and the split serving felt like a full serving.

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying this restaurant as I'd heard it's the sister restaurant of Tycoon in Flower Mound which we love. But our experience here was average. Started out with some cocktails which were great so that was positive. The restaurant overall is super small so even though we were only a party of 2 we were squished between parties on both sides of us and barely had room to keep my coat next to me. For apps we had oysters which were nice and fresh. We also had the fried rock shrimp which was tasty but they went overboard on the cilantro. For dinner I had the blackened redfish and the flavors were there but was dry and overcooked. My husband ordered a medium rare filet which came out medium well so they had to cook a new one so my food just sat in front of me getting cold while waiting for his new plate. So that was a huge bummer. They did give us a free glass of Prosecco to make up for it which I appreciate. We also got a side of the truffle fries which were good and gave us something to snack on while waiting for the steak to be refired. Overall, barely a mediocre experience so don't think we'll be back.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I stumbled upon this spot because I needed take a colleague out, and needed somewhere close to our office. It's a very intimate speakeasy vibe. All the food we had was delicious: grilled oysters, spinach dip, sea bass, and red snapper, and key lime for dessert. All entrees were cooked to perfection. The servers were attentive as well. The only thing I noticed is that the cocktail prep wasn't consistent. The first cocktail was amazing but when I ordered to same drink again, I had to send it back to be remade.

Yelp
I'm writing this from the bar at Volstead, a very cute bar and restaurant located in a strip mall, inspired by prohibition era speakeasy's, this place is not lacking in vibes. I can definitely see getting dressed up with girlfriends and making a night of it here, although at 5:00pm on a Monday evening, things are much more casual. Couple of people working from the bar top on their laptops brings a more inclusive atmosphere that won't turn you down for showing up in a graphic t and cargo shorts. We came during happy hour (lucky for us) so we wanted to take full advantage. I ordered a bootleggers blossom and my husband got a clover club cocktail. Both were good, they were out of the maraschino liquor so subbed simple syrup for mine, I'm sure it would have been better with the original maraschino liquor but still was quite pleasant with the substitute. I later ended up getting an old fashioned which was relatively standard. Onto the food; we got quite an assortment of things to try out. Coming during HH really paid off here. Cheeseburger tasted kind of like an elevated McDonald's, and I truly don't mean that in a bad way. I devoured my half quite quickly, it also came with a seasoned pickle which was a nice little change of pace. The pressed sushi was good. We also got the prohibition sampler, which has oysters Rockefeller, beef Wellington bites, and Maryland crab cakes. If you get this, you need to eat immediately. The beef Wellington bites had cooled completely by the time we ate them and while the taste was good, they were slightly off putting at the cooler temperature. Crab cakes were good but ultimately nothing from the sampler was really stand out star worthy. This might sound ridiculous but the popcorn chicken was actually really delicious; fresh and tender and had this paprika forward seasoning that was really yummy. Would highly suggest trying. We couldn't leave it at that so of course we also got the kanzuri shrimp- would definitely recommend, and also the hot honey pepperoni flatbread- really tasty pizza and again would highly recommend. Overall, this place is totally a vibe. The bartender Greyson, took great care of us and I would love to come back to try more things off their menu while sipping on some kind of fabulous cocktail.

Yelp
We stopped into Volstead on a whim--our first night out since having a baby--and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The prohibition-style ambiance was cozy, intimate, and just what we needed to feel like ourselves again for an evening. The highlight of our night was the bartender, Fabian, who absolutely hooked it up. Our first round of drinks was creative and expertly crafted. For the second round, my husband told Fabian that "you can drive," and wow--he delivered. He introduced us to a cocktail we'd never even heard of before: the Vieux Carré. It was incredible. Complex, smooth, and absolutely unforgettable. This place is a whole vibe, and the drinks? Unreal. We can't wait to come back (hopefully not too long from now--shoutout to our babysitter). Cheers to Volstead and to Fabian for making our first night out as new parents one for the books.

Yelp
This place is great. Beautiful, warm decor and ambience with well made food and drinks (on both my visits). The service is friendly yet professional and I appreciate they do what so many other places don't: have their hostesses, bartenders and severs dress to match ambiance and price point. This place lives up to what it says it is and what we hoped it would be.
google avatar

Tyler D.

Yelp
Food and service were amazing. Super accommodating and I hope they succeed! It's a very cool vibe and very relaxing, yet still lively. The staff has the best outfits too.
google avatar

Yelp
Well this was worth the stop. We were looking for a cool vibe and some different food and we found it. Not to mention the bartender (Fabian) was awesome. Make it a stop when you are in the area.

Yelp
I've been watching this place as it was progressing and was glad to see that it finally opened. Arrived at 430 and it was PACKED standing room only. Thankfully I had a reservation so was seated promptly. Staff was all so helpful and friendly. The manager on duty(Cory I think) stopped by and checked on us too. Love the speakeasy vibe with low light and prohibition era decor - the only complaint was it was SO LOUD .. it was hard to hear my dinner date. Not sure if they do anything about that or not . It thinned out a little before we left so it was more tolerable. Food was delish! We tried the crab dip and split the French dip. I was stuffed! I got the Manhattan and hubs got the old fashioned happy hour price of 6.00 made it even more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to adding this place to my list of go to spots! Add it to the love list!

Yelp
We enjoyed a happy hour dinner at this lovely new restaurant recently. We appreciate the CLASSY speakeasy vibe. So fun! The service is impeccable and the menu is upscale, especially for it's location. My husband and I both ordered an old-fashioned with Makers. They were delicious and at half price! My husband ordered the wedge and creamed spinach since he had a large lunch that day. He was not impressed with either dish, unfortunately. The wedge had little toppings and the creamed spinach felt canned-ish. I ordered the sea bass. The mushrooms, broccolini (while a tad too el Dante), were both delicious with the yummy mashed potatoes. The Seabass had great flavor, but was definitely undercooked. This place is fresh off the press so they get lots of grace. Some friends of ours came the exact same day for lunch and enjoyed the fish and chips, deviled eggs, and the burger. Pics included.

Yelp
Everything is perfect!!! I've been here twice in the last 2 weeks. They have the best lemon drop martinis in the DFW area. A different bartender made it each time so they have a great recipe! The French dip is huge (large enough to share) and very good. The atmosphere is perfect for conversation. Light music plays in the background at a volume that is calm and soothing. I'm lucky to live so close.

Yelp
Bartenders are great, take the time to actually talk to the bar guests. Eclectic liquor selection. Food quality is top notch. One of few options for late night (not your typical fried bar) food in the Southlake/Grapevine area.

Yelp
Super cute place. Fantastic happy hour. Everything we tried was great. Staff was nice.

Yelp
Third visit for hh on a Thursday and unfortunately the small drink portions of pre-made craft cocktail old fashions persist ( and I thought "craft" was made custom) but not here. Additionally, the hh drinks prices were increased by about 33%, no longer 1/2 off and hh food specials shrunk. I am attaching the new August 2024 released menu. I saw nothing on website indicating this change. My crew of 4 agree we will move on as the noise and no so comfortable seating at the bar coupled with price increases no longer makes this place enjoyable.

Yelp
We were trying to celebrate my husband's birthday. This was our second visit. When we came the first time, it was nice. We were sat our in open area to watch the ambience of the room, the bar televisions, etc. Great food and drinks. Second time they put us far right in last booth by stinky bathrooms, 2 loud teens doing gymnastics next to our chairs while their moms drank wine and ignored their loud voices and gymnastics , and the entire waitstaff walking by our booth with their loud yelling from the kitchen of "ORDER!" . It was MISERABLE. Never going again.

Yelp
Really lovely bar with interesting menu. Good service, nice liquor selection. Food a bit pricey

Yelp
Brand new concept restaurant in Southlake next to mangoes. The concept is a speak easy style of place however it's lacking the "speak easy" feel. The lighting was too bright and the decor could use a bit of softening up- maybe add some velvet drapes to doorway openings. The restaurant was a bit smoky from the kitchen and we did end up leaving smelling like a kitchen so I'd definitely add some better ventilation. The food was ok for the price. However, my potatoes were cold and the chicken could've been a little less soggy. The French dip was good but it has the potential to be so much better if you add some grilled onions to it. The crispy rice salmon was good. Drinks were only ok. It didn't rock our world but they are new and could be working out the nuances. Service was good but the check came quickly after we finished eating so we felt like the young lady was ready to get us out of there. Overall, not bad and I hope they take the genuine feedback.

Yelp
This place was adorable and their deviled eggs were phenomenal!! Have the filet for sure!!! This place was great and we have eaten some fantastic places in Ireland, such as Adare Manor and Guinness Castle. This place was up there with Michelin restaurants!!
google avatar

Tracy W.

Yelp
Fabian and Haegen are great bartenders, demonstrating a very welcoming atmosphere. They take the time to learn and recall customers' names, which is a notable aspect of their service. I appreciate the vibe of this place, particularly as a bourbon connoisseur. Volstead has a speakeasy-like atmosphere. I highly recommend this place and anticipate returning in the future. Due to my current medication, I am temporarily in time out from adult beverages for a few more weeks. I look forward to trying their Old Fashioned when I am able to do so again.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here tonight for the Frank Sinatra theme dinner. What a great time this was! Great food, atmosphere, Kevin sang Franks songs. We had a blast!!!
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
Love the ambience of this place. Once inside, it totally defies the fact that you are in a strip shopping center. It truly does feel like a speakeasy. Drinks are always good. Happy hour ends at 6 PM, so I recommend getting there early to take advantage. The food items that I have had there have also been very good. Their appetizers are wonderful and the fried deviled eggs are a must try.

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Great cocktails, food was delicious. Their hamburger is excellent. The interior is intimate and warm.

Yelp
Finally had the time to visit and eat here with my friend. He and I loved our food, can't wait to try more on the menu. Also I loved the tea it wasn't watery like most. We loved the ambiance nice cozy place. Service was attentive and friendly to. We enjoyed the music as well. I will certainly go back.
google avatar

Todd R.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our first visit and will definitely be back. The food and bar service was great, especially for such a new establishment. We had the fish and chips which really might be the best outside of the UK.
google avatar

J Steve W.

Yelp
Food and drink at its finest! Awesome decor and super friendly/professional staff! Deviled eggs are so good! Burger and truffle fries melted in my mouth. And the cocktails were a joy to see made and the mixologist was very talented at her creations. I'd go back today! They have a happy hour also. Do yourself a solid and check it out.

Terrye O.

Yelp
I wonderful afternoon! Perfect everything Food, ambience and service was amazing Thanks Kevin and the whole crew
google avatar

Amelia J.

Yelp
Great ambiance and wonderful drinks! Our bartender was amazing! The style of the bar is great, cozy and friendly.

Izzy T.

Yelp
Great service and cocktails but food needs to be delish. Fish and chips too much fries 3 fishes with too much batter.

TX in D.

Yelp
Really disappointed. Bartender was perfectly nice but seemed poorly trained. They weren't busy, but it took him 15 mins to make our two drinks. Husband had a Bee's Knees that was undrinkable. I had the Old Fashioned that was not good, but I tossed it back so it wasn't a total waste of money. Bar is also right on top of the door which I didn't love. I was psyched for the idea of a speakeasy vibe in town, but we wouldn't go back.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
The interior is cute and the menu looks decent. But the food is not great. There are very few seats at the bar. Service is meh.

Gary G.

Yelp
Pretty cool place. Went late on a Thursday night as two couples for a cocktail. My buddy and I ordered the Irish American old fashioned- it's one of their "signature " drinks. Had so much simple syrup that we couldn't drink it. Too sweet. Stick with a regular drink instead of their signature drinks. They should have a HH that starts at 8-9:00 pm to keep patrons interested in this location.

Pat P.

Yelp
Really love everything about this new spot..... have been 4 times. Service is great. Good selections on the menu. Great bartenders and wonderful espresso martini. The creamed spinach was so good the first 3 times ..... but the last time it was runny and no flavor .... they said it had not changed but it was not the same. Typically the owners stop by to chat

John Lucas ..

Yelp
Meh! Odd little place that tried to be prohibition era motif. Pictures don't cut it folks... The service is good BUT WAAAAAY rushed!!!! I was eating my still half full bowl of soup when the the entrees came out.. very rush rush rush. Food was cooked Good but nothing special, very similar to Tycoon (sister restaurant) ... Seems to be trying to be something it can't be. Also, booths are too cramped. Place it too small. Best of luck to you though. Maybe get the place next door and make it bigger, slow the service down to a good pace and make it really be a prohibition type location- not just a bunch of old photos on the wall! Very very very AVERAGE, at best!

Suzy W.

Yelp
Great new spot in Southlake! Espresso martini was the biggest hit! Mac and cheese next, tuna salad, poblano soup and rock shrimp. All awesome.

Cynthia M.

Yelp
We so wanted to love this place! Love the concept, the menu looked great, but it was a miss for us. For the price, the food was just okay (salmon and sea bass). The service was pretty good. One of my biggest complaints was the noise. It was so difficult to enjoy a conversation. Pro tip: be sure to reserve a booth when you make your reservation to maybe secure a booth. We had a resy, but didn't know to ask for a booth.

Diane M.

Yelp
We went to Volstead for happy hour and food. Pro tip: make reservations! We got the last available table at just after 4pm on a Thursday. I liked the interior, it is classy but unusual. The upholstery on the chairs and booths is nice. We got old fashioned cocktails and they were tasty. We also had the crab dip which was fantastic, although a little light on crab for the price. The house chips that come with the dip are thick and crunchy. The happy hour cheeseburger was delicious! We caved and got the chocolate cake, which for the price was a bit disappointing in that the cake part was crumbly and a little dry.

Rob N.

Yelp
My wife and I dined at Volstead I. Southlake this evening and it was great. The atmosphere was lively but not so loud that we could have a normal conversation. I had old fashioned which was great and their deviled eggs for appetizers. My wife had their French onion soup. For main course I had the blackened red snapper and it was great. My wife had the cedar plank salmon and she said it was wonderful. Kevin took excellent care of us. I would highly recommend Volstead.

Nicole R.

Yelp
Well if you read the Yelp influencers, you'd think this place was not worth your time. But it was fantastic. The espresso martini is top notch with the cold foam, appetizers were great, food great, and great service. Sounds like someone's is salty over something. I will be here again, even if it is just for a quick espresso martini or espresso shot that offered (which was 100% best shot I ever had).

Keith W.

Yelp
Wonderful experience with a bountiful menu selection! Recommend it highly. Staff well oriented to giving great customer service.

Debby H.

Yelp
Adorable atmosphere! We was excited when we walked in. But the drinks were VERY subpar. The old fashion was the worst I have had. No taste and very watered down. Left after one drink. Too bad it's adorable. Service was decent.

Ronald D.

Yelp
First time there. Nice ambiance. I had the filet with Parmesan and the cord side. It was delicious. The service was great

Carol K.

Yelp
Great new date night restaurant in Southlake. Amazing how the interior was transformed from it's prior inhabitant. Great service and great food and cocktails. It was quite loud - I'd like to see them do something about the acoustics.
