The Best Restaurants and Cafes in Grand Marais, Minnesota - Eater Twin Cities

"Voyageur Brewing Company is one of the newer breweries on the North Shore — it opened in 2015 on the heels of Castle Danger Brewing, Bent Paddle, and Canal Park Brewing during the craft beer boom. The big, sunny taproom and rooftop deck have lovely views of the harbor. The beer list breaks down each brew by hops and flavor components, ranging from an herbal Northern Drift pale ale to a silky Palisade porter. From the food menu, go for the cheese curds and wings, both served with a smoky raspberry chipotle sauce." - Justine Jones

Google
Great time at Voyageur Brewery! We highly suggest the cheese curds, pork sliders, and Reuben egg rolls! The seltzer was so smooth and refreshing! Our server was so friendly and helpful with suggestions. We will definitely be back next time we are up here!

Thai tacos are great. We had 2 orders of them. Beer is fine. The rooftop decks has a nice view. They are fast, amazing table turns.

Google
We stopped for lunch. The outdoor seating had giant open windows that looked right out onto the lake. The food was simple but very well done. Highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area

Google
Some of the finest beer and food anywhere. The smoked herring, imperial stout, and Norse vibes make this a truly special place. AND -- great service as well. Fantastic experience all around. I went well out of my way to try this place and I will eagerly do so again!

Google
New experience and great food! Our server was great and kind. All the workers were very welcoming. Food was simple but tasted soooo good, I’m sad we live so far away. Definitely visiting again in the furture!

Google
Great place for an excellent dinner, beer, and great service!! I had the Reuben Egg Rolls, which were a unique take on an old favorite and the corned beef was house made and great. I also had the Spicy Asian chicken salad, which was fresh and crisp but *slightly* too spicy for me; I max out at medium. Frankly none of their beers were that noteworthy, but they were all good and I have a high bar for noteworthy craft beers. Their Palisade Porter was good and I got a couple of 20oz cans to go. Bartender Josh was professional, friendly, had great recommendations, and was happy to chat me up about the local scene. Remarkable was his ability to *work non-stop* while giving me local advice and answering my non-stop questions about life on the North Shore. Owners note: Josh deserves a raise!!

Google
Swung in for a flight and a pub pretzel! Both were delicious. Really enjoyed the Swamper Pilsner. Was slightly bummed you cant choose you own flight though they do allow you to substitute one out when you order the signature flight. Hope to be back again!

Google
Very good beer selections. Great service by experienced friendly staff. Good appetizer selection. Excellent cheese curds. Fun place to stop and relax for beer and snacks.

Yelp
Excellent Palisade Porter Food was simply good. Not great, but good. Busy late October Saturday and sat at the bar in the corner. Had to flag down the bartender for a drink. Atmosphere is fun and the view is great!

Yelp
great views & brews alongside the Great Lake. The Blueberry Royale is the best sour I have had. Their rooftop bar is quick, simple & easy service with a smile.

Yelp
I absolutely loved visiting Voyageur in Grand Marais. I had received a few recommendations to hit the spot on our trip to the North Shore of MN, and I would definitely recommend a visit myself! Somehow, we walked in as a group of 10 on a Saturday night, and we were miraculously seated right away on the patio. I fully expected some kind of wait with a big group, but was very pleasantly surprised. If you sit outside too, look forward to some nice views of Lake Superior and the rest of town. My favorite beer was the Trailbreaker Belgian Wheat, with the Pie Royale blueberry sour ale and the Ogish Oatmeal Stout as runner-ups. The food menu was a little bit small, but what we did try was incredible. The cheese curds are huge and battered in their Boundary Waters Brunette beer and served with a raspberry chipotle barbecue sauce, and the perch tacos were dressed in a sweet and spicy chili sauce that took them over the top. Plus, the food came out almost as soon as we put our orders in, which was a bonus. Funny merch too. Plan a stop at Voyageur if you're ever in the area!

Yelp
We came to this brewery for lunch. The brewery has lovely views of Lake Superior, a nice outdoor patio space, and modern interior. We ordered the pho, chicken salad, and fondue. The sizes of all the dishes were more like appetizers than entrees, so order a few for sharing. The soup was good but didn't taste like pho. There was way too much dressing on the salad; I would order the dressing on the side next time. And, the fondue came with slices of French bread, apples, and brusselsprouts (enough for the two of us). For a brewery, the food was good but we'll have to come back to try the beer. Service was very fast and friendly. Thank you for the yummy lunch!

Yelp
A must make stop while visiting grand marais. We stopped here today while tooling around town and wow how this place has grown! They've added a lot of outdoor space and the inside is looking very festive for the winter season. I tried the Christmas ale today, moosletoe and it totally blew my mind. A sugar and cinnamon rim around a spicy dark ale was right up my alley. The cheese curds were top tier as well, with fresh Wisconsin cheese and a nice chipotle bbq sauce to break up the richness. Yum!

Yelp
Very spacious, modern cabin like vibe and friendly staff! Some friends of our recommended this brewery for us to check out on our Northshore trip and I'm so glad we shopped here! We really enjoyed our time here, so much that we went twice! We also took a couple cans home. I think the food menu is a bit limited but good/fair for a brewery. The giant pretzel was my fav!

Yelp
Love stopping here when in Grand Marais! Good beer and seltzer selection. Dog friendly patio. They were busy on a summer Saturday afternoon but we were quickly seated. They have a small menu with some pub classics and some unique items. The smoked whitefish was a fun surprise- it's a whole fish! Accompanied by some crackers and pickled goods. We thought it would have been better with some time of cheese or sauce, but perhaps this isn't how smoked whitefish is traditionally served. The pretzels are hearty and delicious- splurge on the beer cheese :) Wings are just okay. I'd go with other options.

Yelp
First visit to Grand Marais was a success!! Dropped by this brewery to grab a quick bite to eat and surprisingly they had plenty of vegetarian options. I was nervous to try the jackfruit sliders but they were delicious! Service was quick and the atmosphere was incredibly cozy. Will definitely be returning next time I'm in town.

Yelp
This is a cool spot right on Lake Superior and if you are going the secret is to try the beer. The food was just okay, and the flatbread in particular didn't take much effort. My friend had two appetizers and the ruben egg rolls were very good. The service was decent, if not great, but the prices were right. You could tell it was a popular spot with the local crowd and they did have an excellent beer selection. Overall, great location and bar, but the food left something to be determined. That being said, happy we checked it out and would definitely give it another try!

Yelp
A brewery you can hear in! I need to call out the sound mitigation done in this venue because many places do not. It matters to be able to hear who you are with. Details details. Thank youuu. Staff are very friendly. Store has a lot of goodies you will want. Food hits the spot. I like sours and light ales which put the blue berry and the blonde top as my favorites here.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
This brewery is a great spot! I had such a relaxing time sitting up on the roof, sipping a refreshing blueberry ale while enjoying the view of the water. It's a perfect stop if you're just passing through and need good food or a drink. The service was quick, and the workers were kind. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
I would recommend Voyageur Brewing for the beer, but not for dinner. The beers were delicious. The service was good. They didn't offer anything other than "appetizers"; in my opinion. Ambiance was chill.

Yelp
OMG. First time in Grand Marais and we had 'mapped' our eateries in advance based on reviews. Well, that plan got set aside as we came back today for a second go!!! Service is absolutely amazing and friendly and better than most. We sat at the lovely patio yesterday and dove inside today (oh, the Hamm's beer stripper canoe is proudly on display less the bear ). Food choices may be small, yet the selection is epic in our humble opinion. We came back because Dan just had to have another round of the Rueben Eggroll. Yesterday I wanted light, and the flatbread was perfect. Today I devoured the Asian Chicken wings. Amazing flavor! Beer. I could live here and never get enough of their great selection and diversity of brew. Being older, we now lean to less hoppy IPA. The Trailbreaker made our tastebuds sing in total happiness. If you're not in the mood for beer, try the root beer.

Yelp
I was absolutely blown away visiting this cute small town brewery, they had great beers, great food, and even better service. Now I knew we were up north so there would be some smoked fish, I didn't not expect that we could get a full smoked herring and I can confidently say we loved having it both times we visited on our long weekend. I appreciated the nice variety of beers that they had too, anything from wild rice brown ales to sours to IPAs to you name it, they had it and they were all delicious.
google avatar

Alaina S.

Yelp
Always love the vibe here and that hasn't changed. The patio has expanded since we're were there last. It's a great place to hang out. On our most recent trip up north we went twice. The food is still good although a few dishes (the sliders and tacos) seemed to fall short from what we remembered from previous visits. The flavor is great, just seemed to fall short on the amount of meat they give you. The beer of course is a home run. All in all it is still one of our favorite places to stop when we are up north. Perfect for big groups or just a couple. Bring a game and relax and enjoy some beer on the patio!

Yelp
Pretty cool microbrewery in Grand Marais. The service was excellent and the place had a pretty laid back vibe to it. Nice selection of beer with my favorite being the Gunwale Bobber Hazy IPA. My wife and I also tried the cheese curds - Yum! They also have cool merch for sale at the microbrewery and at their separate store just a few steps away (where you can also buy beer in cans). Very cool stop and would love stop in again next time we are traveling through.

Yelp
This brewery is a MUST when you are visiting Grand Marais or traveling further up the North Shore. I got the flight of 6 5-oz beers, which consisted of a blonde, brunette, belgian, sour ale and two IPAs. It was $14 before tip, which I think is a very reasonable price for a flight, especially for getting to try 6 different kinds with generous sized glasses. I ordered at the bar, which was seamless with friendly staff, and I brought my flight up to the rooftop patio. There is a very chill and relaxing atmosphere at Voyageur, especially on a beautiful, calm night in Grand Marais. My favorite of the 6 beers I tried in the flight was the "Trailbreaker Belgian." I'm not usually a beer drinker, but this one was delicious and I will definitely be ordering another next time I am up north!
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
As always the beer and service was amazing. Anytime you order something the wait was minimal. This is a great place to come hangout and play some card games while sipping a great brew. We always order the pork slider, however they have started to skimp on the meat here. The sliders had a very sad amount of pork, I can no longer recommend ordering those. Also the fish tacos had two very tiny pieces of fish. I did love the cheese curds and next time will go with a flat bread.
google avatar

Mason O.

Yelp
Beer was tasty and the service was quick. Kinda loud inside but the outside is quieter. I kept looking at this dog tho. They allow them. But this one was tiny and sleepy. Kept distracting me from conversations I didn't wanna be in.

Yelp
Great food, service and beer selections. We live in Orlando, FL and visit the North Shore about 4 times a year. We always go the Voyager Brewing Company at least once while traveling to MN.

Yelp
I came here during lunch time with my 8 year old daughter. We sat outside as the weather was spectacular. I tried 2 different beers - one was a sour and it was quite good. We had some shared food and a salad - everything was pretty good. Great spot for a great beer selection and pretty good finger type foods. They also have a fantastic gift shop next door which also sells many of their beers. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great spot in Grand Marais. We happened to be here on February Thursday and we're one of a few groups but the vibe was great with the soothing tones of Nathaniel Ratliffe on the speakers and views of an angry cold Superior's waves. We started with the fondue which was so so good. The Brussels could be served as a standalone item but with the cheese they were epic. My husband loved his chili and I loved the Spicy Asian Chicken Salad which was delicious but it does build on that spice, my mouth was on fire by the end! The Brunette Ale was the perfect compliment to our cold winter visit and we'd highly recommend you pay a visit. Also the cutest merch! I always want to buy 3 bags and 4 sweatshirts. ; )
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
The vibe and the beers were really good. The beer selection is limited if you like sours but I did like the one they had on the menu. The food was disappointing. I would definitely come back here again for a drink and maybe an app. All the staff as really nice. The place was packed but they worked hard and got us our orders quickly for the amount of people that were there.

Yelp
Voyageur was recently named Yelp's top rooftop bar in Minnesota, and for good reason! We've been here a few times, and always opt for the rooftop if there's space. It's first come first serve so during weekends it can get busy! You can get food here, but this time we just got pre-dinner drinks. I SO wish they had a seltzer or gluten-free option - that would be my only critique! I'd love to partake while here. The views are great - despite the bit of road sound - and everyone is enjoying the view up top. They have great beer variety and our group raved about their porter. Definitely recommend having a drink here while in Grand Marais!

Yelp
We absolutely LOVED our visit . Our server , Gabriel , was super friendly and knowledgeable about all beers we asked about . Excellent customer service from all staff members , but also a big thank you to Rich for the recommendations about things to see and do in the area

Yelp
Pretty cool deck and vibe. Great spot for small town. Good menu selection. This is rated on a small town curb.

Yelp
Outstanding establishment. Had the $26 food board plate....outstanding. Delicious! Highly recommended by me. Smoked fish, cheese, nuts, crackers, bread, pickles, jam. Missed some items I'm sure. It is a two person dish. Outstanding service. Nicely appointed ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer in a superb location. Nice selection of pub foods. Two beers and two food selections for dinner, left feeling full and ready for bed. Nice servers who can be quite engaging.

Haeli L.

Yelp
Came up the shore for my birthday and stopped in here to try the beer. I like frequenting craft breweries. I was not disappointed here! Loved the atmosphere and the drinks were great. Food was good, service was too. Would visit again if I'm up in the area for sure!

Yelp
This is quite possibly my favorite spot up north and second only to the BWCA (Boundary Waters). The food and beer are good and the employees have been outstanding in every single visit since they opened shop. The parking situation changes every year but there's no shortage of street parking around the block. The space has gotten bigger to accommodate customers over the years. The addition of outdoor seating options and now even rooftop seating is a huge plus. I recall the beer variety covering the basics initially and then gradually expanding to milk stouts, Imperial stouts, hazy IPAs, DDH IPAs, and even fruited sours. Their food selection has improved in a similar way with their tacos and cheese curds quickly being my established go-to in recent years. They have refillable growlers and prefilled growlers for a quick swap. I almost never leave without taking at least one. And on the topic of beer, the Lost Compass Mexican Hot Chocolate stout, Pie Royale sour, and the Pescarus (seagull in Romanian) wet hop IPA are my top three. Of course the originals like the Palisade Porter and Devils Kettle IPA are classics. Hello to my Romanian friends there and hope to make many more visits to Voyageurs Brewing.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Great place! Good food and a great vibe! Lots of good beers on tap and food is great! We always get the tacos and they are terrific! The service is always good and we always leave with some swag!
google avatar

Katy F.

Yelp
Voyageur Brewing is a great spot nestled right in town! It's usually very busy, but you can wait for a table on their rooftop bar area (we did this and loved it). The food was so much better than I would have ever expected! We got the pulled pork sliders and were blown away by how GOOD they were. We also got the cheese curds which were delicious. The beers were also worth trying, but none of them particularly stood out. Service was really slow, but we were understanding due to how busy they were. Just anticipate having to ask for the check and not to be checked in on by your server (at least for the time being). Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back!
google avatar

An'Nisa P.

Yelp
The service. Waiter never came back to check on us after ordering beer. We wanted to order food as well, but after waiting 15 minutes for the waiter to come back, we decided to pay the bill and leave.
google avatar

Sydney T.

Yelp
This place was awesome! Our server was working his butt off during a busy lunch hour and was excellent! We ordered cheese curds and the smoked herring and both were awesome! Our beers & the blueberry pie sour were also very tasty. Highly recommend!! Great service and great food and drink.

Kirk A.

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Great beer taste! Recommend to go there! Neat building and atmosphere!

Carolyn L.

Yelp
Great beer, awesome brewery vibe- the food is always great, try the cheese curds and the reuben egg rolls. In the summer the rooftop deck is a winner with the spectacular view of the harbor.

Sam K.

Yelp
mouth watering cheese curds, i saw god in the perfect lattice as i stretched the golden crust
google avatar

Macy M.

Yelp
One of my all time favorite breweries! Perhaps it's the amazing location in the North Shore, but Voyageur Brewing Company is the best. The space is large, the staff are super friendly, and the beer is awesome. I've visited in both the winter and summer months and each time have been impressed. They do offer a menu of food - bar bites I would say. The food didn't blow me away, but the beer and atmosphere easily make up for it. Looking forward to my next visit!!
google avatar

Leif J.

Yelp
Really great service when we had a large group. Kids loved flatbreads and quesadillas. Adult had chicken wings, sliders and tacos. If gluten-free, skip the gluten free sliders and just get some wings or ribs. Otherwise everyone was in the clean plate club.

Katie W.

Yelp
Loved sitting on the patio and enjoying the view of the lake. Thai tacos and a quesadilla were good. Servers were nice.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Voyageur is a standard stop for me on any trip to Grand Marais. Hard to beat drinking a beer on their rooftop looking at the Lake after a hike or walk around town. Fave beers: SHT sour in the summer and the Hjordis hazy IPA in the cooler months. Favorite menu items: pretzel, fish tacos, sliders, and brownie sundae. The salads are pretty good too!
google avatar

Robin J.

Yelp
Iconic brewery in Grand Marais. The beer was great food was meh. My partner has the salami flatbread which he liked. I ordered the jackfruit sliders. Please learn from my mistake and do not order these. They were served cold and according to the server they were intentionally served cold. They were also flavorless. Beer and atmosphere a 5 but the food was bad so that's the reason for the 2 stars. **update** the owner reached out to me and sincerely asked about my experience and said that the server should have fixed the problem and also She said that she's proud of the jackfruit sliders and they should be served hot. . I'm going to back another day and try them again. I think it's awesome that the owner was so interested in my experience and really wanted to understand the issue so that she could fix it.
google avatar

Marla K.

Yelp
Service was fantastic! Food came in out quickly and there was always someone stopping by to check if we wanted more food or drinks. Food was reasonably priced for the area. Also dog friendly and they have a beautiful outdoor patio! My family and I visit this place every time we are in Grand Marais, and I would highly recommend checking this place out
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
It was kind of a last minute decision to stop here. We were hiking Grand Portage and Judge CR Magney State Parks and heading back to Lutsen. We thought a beer would be good after all that hiking. I LOVED this place. We sat on the deck overlooking Lake Superior. Outstanding view! The afternoon was beautiful, not too hot, not too cold. I chose a stout. The dark beers were not available on the deck (only a few taps available outside) but it was no problem to order inside and carry it out to the deck. It's a dog friendly deck and fun to see the many pets enjoying the day with their owners. They did have some food available and the kettle chips with onion dip and the wings looked amazing but we had other plans for dinner so we had to use a lot of discipline to say no to the chips. So glad we stopped! Great oasis!

Shaun M.

Yelp
Good brewery with good food. We had perch tacos, blt flatbread, cheese curds. I did the beer flight and liked all the beers especially the blonde.
google avatar

Ellie H.

Yelp
Super wonderful service. Excellent food super wonderful food, I got the margarita flatbread and the cheese curds. The atmosphere is good loud voices and it is popular. Want to come here again!
google avatar

Kedar D.

Yelp
Voyageur Brewing is your standard industrial-ish place ideal for large groups. It also has a decent beer selection and a few labeled vegan items on the food menu. We got the jackfruit tacos ($10) made vegan without mayo. I wasn't impressed by these, as the shell was not cooked and the jackfruit watery and bland. As far as the beers go, I got a Boundary Waters Brunette brown ale, which is made with local wild rice. It had an unusual malty flavor, and I'm not sure you'll find a wild rice beer anywhere else in the country, but it wasn't quite my thing. That said, I appreciate it. I'm not sure I'd return to Voyageur unless they added a sour beer and a few better vegan food options, but it does fill a niche in Grand Marais.

Meara K.

Yelp
Wonderful place to stop in Grand Marais! The outdoor patio is beautiful with views of Lake Superior. The beers were great and food was wonderful. The BBQ pork ribs are a must try! We will be back on our next trip up to Grand Marais.

Yelp
The fam and I were up here the day after Thanksgiving and stopped in for appetizers and drinks. I was very happy with the customer service. The staff members were super friendly and cheerful and I really appreciated how intuitive they were for our needs. It seemed like they were reading our minds. It's always a treat to stop in here when we're in town.
