How I Got My Booth: Falling in Love at Missouri’s Most Romantic Red Sauce Joint | Bon Appétit

"In Independence, Missouri, just ten miles from downtown Kansas City, the Totta family has been entertaining guests at V's Italiano Ristorante since 1963. It’s a place that’s inspired dozens of couples to get romantic over the years (official restaurant slogan: “Since 1963, a Nice Place to Fall in Love”), and nearly every one of the snuggle-up booths bears a plaque engraved with all the names of people who got engaged at the table. Laura Hartley Maxey, a part-time teacher, and Scott Maxey, a transportation manager in Kansas City, had seen those plaques before. Both were born nearby and grew up eating at V’s with their families. But when they got engaged at the restaurant—getting a plaque of their own—they started a new tradition that bloomed into a multigenerational love story." - ByLiz Cook

Reminds me of the classic Italian restaurants one would visit on special occasions. Cuisine portions were on spot, and the flavors were near authentic! Definitely I will be back again.

Absolutely Perfect Experience – 10 Stars! We chose V's to host a rehearsal dinner, and it was an absolutely perfect experience from start to finish. We were planning this from out of town, but Greg made everything so easy—and I have to say, they are very reasonable as well. The food was absolutely delicious! The exceptional staff went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly and that our guests felt welcomed and cared for. The atmosphere was warm, elegant, and ideal for such a special occasion. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate. Thank you, V’s, for making our evening unforgettable!

Google
What a perfect place at the end of a long day of traveling. Very polite and attentive staff, good food, and nice portion sizes. I got some bruschetta to go since I was staying in the hotel that night. My server boxed everything up for me and also included extra table bread and butter. My dishes were cleared almost as soon as I was done eating, which was a nice touch you don’t often see. Quite frankly the only other time I’ve experienced it was at a Michelin restaurant recently and they had people stationed watching a small group of tables. I would definitely recommend giving this place a try.

Google
Service was amazing. Atmosphere was pretty but too dark. The waterfall at the front door and the stain glass windows are very inviting. I wish the food had been better. We got the lunch buffet. It looked delicious and some of it was but it wasn’t that warm. Who knows how long it had been sitting there cause we never saw anyone come and check on it. The salads had a ton of dressing on them and I was shocked to see they weren’t on ice. So they were wilted. My favorite thing on the buffet was the toasted ravioli. The bread they bring to your table was delicious.

Google
I was soooo pleased. I do reviews for a living so when I take time to do a "non-work" review, they have to be pretty special. We started at another restaurant and walked out after sitting at the table for 15 min without being even asked for a drink order so we left and came here to V's. We had never been here before but we will happily return. Wonderful Italian dishes. The fructi de mare and manicotti was exceptional. They also had a wonderful seafood selection, including lobster and yes, escargot. I can't wait to go again. They even had an excellent non-alcoholic wine. Perfect balance on everything with a great, light rum cake served as part of the meal though they also had wonderful offerings like spumoni and tirramisu which I am excited to try next time. We were seated quickly and given water and had our drink orders taken immediately. Our waitress was quick and attentive. I wish I remembered her name. The atmosphere was just right for makingbyou feel cozy and like it was something special all at the same time. There was a wonderful little bar that had quaint Italian decor and there was a pretty little fountain if you wanted to dine outside. There were two minor negatives - the restrooms were downstairs and felt like you were in a broom closet and the side salad was a litte pitiful with an Italian dressing that was too sweet. Trust me though, I found everything else to be exceptional.

Google
An Independence staple, this establishment has aged well like a fine wine. Excellent service from the front door on. Everyone is warm and friendly. Meals were hot, fresh, and served promptly. Their side salad is a little light, just lettuce, mozzarella cheese, onion, and croutons, no proteins. I suggest you try the house dressing as it's amazing. The lasagna was perfect. Right amount of sauce and cheese. And the rum cake was a perfect finish as always. Come hungry!

Google
March 9th I had the buffet here on Sunday. While the food is incredible and that's why we come here. Customers were complaining about undercooked bacon. I got the norovirus stomach bug from eating here per my doctor. Kitchen food hygiene needs to improve, probably kept food out too long or re used food. Fruit, shrimp, bacon. Whatever it was. I will not return although the food was excellent

Google
We were there at dinner on a Saturday. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. We ordered Chicken Spedini, Spaghetti and Meatballs, and Seafood Alfredo. All arrived hot and delicious. Warm bread, salad, and rum cake were included with the meals. We ordered tirmasu for dessert which was delicious.

Yelp
Awesome service!!! My boyfriend and I had dinner there for my birthday and had such a blast! The appetizers were bomb, we got the artichoke and stuffed mushrooms. I wanted to try veal for the first time... I didn't like it buuuuuut that's probably cuz I just don't like veal. My boyfriend loved his lobster penne dish. We had some long islands and although one would think that's hard to mess up, it happens all the time---- they made them beautifully!! Go eat here. Bottom line. It's upscale and the atmosphere of people working there is such a plus!

Yelp
Food: Calamari was delicious. The side salads were standard and the fettuccine was okay. The prime rib (ordered medium rare) was not the best. It was tough and cold. The salmon was over cooked and also tough to chew. Service: We had a 6pm reservation and we're seated promptly. Our waitress was SO sweet and attentive -- she even gave us free rum cake to go (very delicious). However, the hosts (pictured by the entrance) never came by to check on us. We heard them check on the tables surrounding us, but they never acknowledged us. Ambiance: Dim lighting made for a romantic atmosphere. We were seated in the back and it felt very cozy. 3/5 for food & service. Nothing outstanding.

Yelp
V's is the revelation we've been snoozing on! We were surprised today to find the magic of bottomless Mimosas, an extraordinary brunch bar, and service that sparkles. For dinner devotees of V's, brunch is the next delicious chapter - an absolute must for a delightful twist!

Yelp
This used to be a famous place to eat in KC. We had a good meal there and the waitress we had was outstanding. However, my manicotti is as good or better just following the recipe on an American Beauty pasta box.

Yelp
If you want the high-class Italian experience with the Rat Pack luxury and some delicious food, this is the place to be! This place has been here a long time for a reason. It's a tight-knit family business with delicious food!! The environment (paired with the attentive staff) makes it a great place for enjoying your time and sharing memories while enjoying some amazing dishes. I lived in the area as a young teen and had seen the signs and wanted to try it. My mom was never willing to take me. It IS a bit spendy, so I understand now my mother's reluctance to just take me for a Tuesday evening meal. After moving nearby, I remembered wanting to go and took my chance, now BEING the mom to make that decision! And yeah, I didn't bring my kids. My husband and I had a lovely lunch while they were in school. The weekday lunch buffet has so many favorites!! Totally worth it... all of it... the trip there from WHEREVER, the price, the friendly and alluring atmosphere, and the food... mmm... ::chef's kiss:: Hopefully we'll be back soon!

Yelp
Food was subpar. I went yo the Sunday Brunch. Very few Italian items. Biscuits were hard and dry. Gravy was broken and greasy. Gross in fact. The famous Rum Cake was awful! They obviously have departed from its original soft rum cake of the past. Mone and my guests cake was dry and truly couldn't finish it. Total waste of money. I have loved V's as my favorite spot for years. I wish I knew what happened. Can't support their business any longer. Sadly.

Yelp
Never got to eat. Didn't honor reservation...even waited 30 minutes after reservation. Staff was rude and dismissive

Yelp
Great crew that take good care of you from the time you walk in the door till the time you leave. The pasta is fresh and delicious. The chicken Alfredo is amazing!

Yelp
I guess it's a 3 star, but this place is not very good. I love the old school cheesy decor. The service is usually pretty good and they have some good drinks. The food however is pretty bad. Olive Garden is better, if that says anything to you. I have been a few times because my friend loves corny and cheesy places like this, so I've tried many of the times on the menu. None of them are great, but you won't spit it out, it's fine. But just go down the road to Salvatore's, if you want good Italian

Yelp
Had a few times for lunch, delish. Service was fantastic. The restaurant it's self is beautiful.

Yelp
We went here for Valentine's Day, I hadn't been since I was in high school. It was beyond amazing. The food the service the ambiance was all amazing. We will be returning! Perfect for a date night

Yelp
Best place ever! Food is very good, drinks are perfect, the stuff is awesome, there is not a single thing I don't like about this restaurant. Is my third time visiting and I think this will be my favorite place to go.

Yelp
Our family of 8 went to V's tonight to celebrate a birthday. I had talked up their prime rib and was feeling a bit anxious as they let me know my reputation was on the line. And these folks know their prime rib. The good news is it did not disappoint- it was EXCELLENT! The four of us who ordered prime rib were pleased with the flavor and accuracy of the temperature/doneness. Just as we ordered it. The salad & rum cake was as good as it use to be too. But one of the best parts of our dinner was our server, Susan. From the very beginning of our meal it was evident we were in the hands of a PROFESSIONAL sever. Not someone just picking up a couple of extra bucks or a newbie trying to learn the ropes. It was evident Susan truly cares about her customers, knows what to ask and notice. This lady was on top of her game throughout our entire dinner. She made our dinner that much better by doing a fantastic job. Current staff shortages generally require extra patience and grace these days. That made Susan's expertise and skill stand out that much quicker. Really, she is just that good. In a nutshell, if you're looking for really good Italian food, prime rib and service, visit V's and ask for Susan.

Yelp
I took my family here today for their weekday lunch buffet. $16 per adult is a heck of a deal for unlimited, salad, bread, toasted raviolis, tons of pasta options, meatballs and it even comes with dessert! My favorites were the Cajun tortellini, penne alfredo and of course their spaghetti and meatballs. We also ordered some meals to go because their food is always so delicious and authentic. There's a reason they've been around for over 50 years!

Tegan V.

Yelp
Our server, Stevie was great. We had the toasted ravioli with beef to start. Pretty good, but a little undercooked. Sauce was very good. House salad with house creamy Italian was good. I would not recommend the Chicken Speidini. It's more like a chicken skewer. The Angel hair it came with was over cooked and there was water pooled on my plate. No flavor, will try something else next time. Neat old fashioned place.

Yelp

Yelp
Great food, Combination appetizer fills me up though usually have left overs. I love the ambiance of the dinning area.

Dana W.

Yelp
It's a hidden gem! The food is amazing and staff is as well! I have always enjoyed everything I've tried! Lunch, dinner and drinks. Highly recommend!

Mike S.

Yelp
This is a family owned business and one that still serves traditional values with each dish. You can't go wrong here! Make this a regular location for your dining enjoyment and also support a real local owned restaurant.

Yelp
Typical Americanized Italian food. I came on the recommendation of a friend looking for authentic Italian food here in the KC area, but no such luck. The bread was good, but most of the menu wasn't authentic. The tomato sauce was probably the best part of the meal, but everything else was just "meh". Noodles in the lasagna resembled fettuccini rather than lasagna sheet pasta. My rigatoni was overcooked and had a mushy mouth feel. We came with a bit more than 90 minutes to eat and used every bit of that; even though we got there when the restaurant wasn't very busy and had a small party, it took ages for the food to come out. Nothing really wrong, but just not authentic. Sort of like Olive Garden.

Yelp
One of the best old-school Italian restaurants anywhere. Certainly the best OG Italian in Kansas City. Fabulous food and cozy ambiance. A+++

Yelp
Shannell was the best server that I've ever had--I do not say this lightly! I should start by saying that I have been a server myself for 24 years. I am an easy going person when I dine out; I'm basically a person who has a "here's your 20-25% on the bill" mentality; I'm never really too impressed or too disappointed--and I never leave reviews because of that, I'm always like, eh, it was "good," or "pretty good, but nothing amazing". This is my second review ever. Shannell knows how to tailor her service to her table's needs. I was there with one of my best friend that I hadn't got to see since lockdown 2020. We were catching up. Shannell was so accommodating, but not overbearing. She expertly orchestrated dinner behind the scenes, and made a night into a memory for me. That's always been my goal as a server. As a server, you become a part of another person's life. Be a good part of their life; be a good memory. She is the most genuine server I ever had; she's is the server who genuinely loves people and loves her job, and knows people well enough, and actually cares about people to make a night out with no expectations (except for catching up with a friend) into an awesome memory of a night that I'll never forget. Also, I should mention the food.... Sorry, I'm bias about what impresses me as a Front of House employee. The food was great. I hadn't been to V's since my senior prom in 2000. I thought it was great food at 18, but as an adult who knows restaurants inside and out, their food actually is great. We had bruschetta to start, and I was very impressed. I was iffy with it being so late in September, but the bruschetta delivered with fresh tomatoes and just the right balance of diced basil and acid to make those tomatoes pop. I had the filet with herbed butter and added the mushrooms, with a loaded baked potato as my side. The baked potato was good, typical fare; nothing to criticize, nothing to write home about, but a standard loaded baked potato. The filet was melt in your mouth tender. It was piled on with enough mushrooms to satisfy this mushroom fanatic's every desire. I usually don't order steak because every restaurant has one, but the description caught me, and I couldn't resist--I'm glad that I didn't. It was so much better than I remember from prom night, but experience changes one's opinion. So, definitely go and enjoy the food, it's great. But, trust me as a server myself with 24 years in the industry, Shannell is the best server that I have ever had. She is amazing; she is superlative! When you do go, if she has space in her section, request her. Her caliber of service will make your night into an awesome memory, and let's face it, that's hard to find these days--at least for me!

Dale C.

Yelp
The food, service, and especially the ambience are excellent. We eat there about per month.

Yelp
A classic Italian restaurant with delicious old school classics and favorites. We ate our meal before I remembered to take photos! Oops! A sign of a delicious dinner when you have clean plates all around. Lots of pasta options, soups and salads. As well as a selection of pizzas!
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Italian Food! I forgot to take pictures! I had The Veal Parmigiana w/spaghetti it came with House salad, bread & butter and a slice of Rum cake! I took the rum cake home and ordered a cannoli w/ coffee & milk. Please make the drive to Independence, MO and eat at this gem! Much cheaper than Maggiano's, 100% better and Authentic!!

Yelp
The Thanksgiving feast ordered from Vs was absolutely the best. Not only that between my husband returning home and my putting things in the warmer, Vs called to let me know my entire ordered had not been picked up and they were having one of their employees who would be driving the rest of the order to our home so all would be there in time for our family's arrival. Needless to say the z thanksgiving feast from Vs was a big hit. I would definitely recommend Vs for all your catering needs.

Kenneth M.

Yelp
Bit pricey, but everything I've tried has been very tasty. Service is very good. I just missed the lunch buffet, I didn't even know that they had one. They are great at what they do.

Marc r.

Yelp
Me and my Italian gf go there because she loves the food. Never had a bad expierience.

Malea G.

Yelp
I've had food from V's as part of a group order and this past week for our family. The group order was generic dishes so I wasn't sure what to expect when I chose them for carry out. Everything was delicious!! I had Cajun chicken with fettuccine Alfredo and had plenty for leftovers. My son had fried chicken with fettuccine - the chicken was nice and crispy, not overly greasy. He ate the whole thing that night. My husband had chicken spiedini. There are no photos but everyone was happy. We ordered escargot, which was prepared with puff pastry. If you like those, it's worth a try. Each meal came with salad and bread and to my surprise, there was cake in the bag as well. In terms of service, I ordered at the restaurant and waited in the bar area. Every staff member I interacted with was friendly and quick to respond. The wait was not overly long and I was given updates on when things would be ready. Overall, it was a good carry out and dinner experience.

Yelp
Another great noon lunch today. It's our meet up place, for our family on the east side of KC. We were in a bit of a hurry for a 1pm meeting, so our server, got us in and out. Food always good. I've been coming there for years. They stay the course. No changes to the place, other than a few menu changes. May sound boring, But it's nice to know, you can go to a place, decades after decades, consistency, and the food is still just as good as it always was. Normally I'd go 4 stars, but today was 5

Yelp
I took my wife and mother in law to V's Italiano Ristorante for Mother's day today. This was my 1st experience there. This was a Sunday brunch buffet. This place has quaint and cute little booths. The server brought us a little saucer with fresh fruit, which was a nice start. I was disappointed with how small the buffet was. Then the server offered to bring us plates of ham, burnt ends and roast beef. The burnt ends were just peices of beef filled with fat and gristle and un-edible and the roast beef was tough like leather. We left it untouched. Plates of meat wasted. The server offered to bring us dessert. We requested the rum cake and pecan pie. I honestly have never seen a restuarant serve smaller portions. If you are searching for quality, I would suggest somewhere else. We took a tour of the outside seating area, which was also cute and had a nice water feature.

George L.

Yelp
Here for work from texas, definitely one of the better food spots in the area, sean is a great waiter and they have amazing service

Yelp
Went here for Sunday brunch and man it was packed. The building you can tell is very old because I had to duck to walk in but I am very tall along with my friends who are even taller. What I liked the best was the pasta station. I mixed eveything they had, including sauces and seasoning and added chicken to my tortellini. I began my buffett journey with the sausage which are italian sausage and I got french toast made out of Italian bread. Some french toast was mushy but I believe it was because the bread wasnt stale enough but that is ok. Their eggs tasted like my mothers eggs and that is saying a lot because I have yet to find anyone who seasons their eggs like my mother so those get an A+ from me. I wasn't happy with the eggs Benedict, it was my first time having them but they were cold. The stuffed shells were great too. I didn't drink but my friends did and endless mimosas come with your meal and they really liked their minosas. The only thing I was not impressed with was the desserts. I have a major sweet tooth and whatever chocolate thing that was looked very unappealing and it looked burnt. I am not a fan of pecan pie and the rum cake was a style I didn't like...was too much like a store bought angel food cake with whip cream icing. I think the strips of strawberry gel turned me off in the cake as well. Also the cinnamon rolls were very hard so to eat so I just ate the center. I think this place was cool to try, not a place I will seek out because I live far from it, but not a bad option if you are in the independence area. I also think the place would benefit if they did some upgrades to the decor, when I walked in it looked like a legit Italian restaurant with amazing food but the decor looked like it was from the early 90's.
google avatar

Janet H.

Yelp
Sunday brunch was delicious and best memosas I ever had. Our server, Natalie was awesome. Didn't have to ask her for anything she was on top of it. Have nothing negative to say, great place, great food.
google avatar

Douglas P.

Yelp
Always have a good meal here. Their sauce is Sicilian, so it's a little sweet. They have a good lunch buffet as well.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Went to lunch for the first time in forever. This place has not changed a bit. The buffet was very good. The Cesar salad was so big I couldn't finish. The meatballs were the best.
google avatar

Tyga M.

Yelp
Average Italian, but not bad in the least bit. My friend and I visited on a weeknight about an hour before they closed (whoops!), but the employees didn't act like that was an inconvenience. Since it was my first time visiting, I got a free appetizer by checking in via the Yelp app, which was a nice surprise (and the fried ravioli was pretty good). The side Ceasar salad was just ok, as they used shredded lettuce (like what you'd put on tacos), which threw off the taste a bit. The chicken spiedini dish was fine, but I honestly thought this was something that I could do at home and put more seasoning in the chicken's breading. All in all, it was fine and I wouldn't be opposed to going back, but it's not at the forefront of my mind when it comes to good Italian food in the metro.
google avatar

Kendra M.

Yelp
I had been hearing about this place and how it was good. I went... 26.00 for Fettuccine Frutti Di Mare and it had salad shrimp and lobster crumbles. Was very disappointed. The chocolate cake was delicious. I probably won't be back.

Naomi F.

Yelp
Love V's italiano! Local family owned restaurant. Delicious food, from the lunch buffet to the Sunday brunch. Nothing will ever beat the V's pasta salad or cornmeal pizza.
google avatar

Gary S.

Yelp
Tonight I had spaghetti and meatballs...great! The meatballs were perfectly cooked and tender. The sauce, as always fantastic! My waitress was Timberlie, she was very attentive and quick to notice if I needed anything. Excellent service and food.
google avatar

Dave-Martha V.

Yelp
We just had the brunch at V's Italiano Ristorante today (Super Bowl Sunday) and the highlight was our waiter Sean G. He was very attentive, humorous and cordial. The food, on the other hand, probably would have been delicious if it had been HOT on the brunch serving line. It was definitely temping in the DANGER ZONE. We've eaten dinner here many times and our experiences have always been positive so we will come back to eat here....maybe not for Sunday brunch.
google avatar

Kimberly J.

Yelp
Great food... dark old timey atmosphere, very cool and free CAKE! Our waitress was awesome!!!
google avatar

Emilee R.

Yelp
when I say this is the best spaghetti sauce I have EVER tried I mean it... I don't think even Italy has this good of sauce!!! DELICIOUS DELICIOUS DELICIOUS

Tracy S.

Yelp
I love this place. Sunday brunch amazing. We just went yesterday and found out they have a lunch buffet. It was amazing.
google avatar

Shari A.

Yelp
Seafood stuffed mushrooms were dry. Caesar salad was drowned in dressing and the waitress didn't offer to get us another one when we complained. Manicotti sauce tasted like it had sugar added to the marinara, as did the lasagna sauce. Fettuccine Alfredo was average (and the portion was small, WTH) but the shrimp scampi was good. Owner came by and comped our appetizer and the manicotti our friends had. Not sure what happened to this place but we won't be back.

Elise S.

Yelp
I've been going to this place since I was 2 years old. I'm 22 now and go every year even though I'm out of state now. This is a wonderful family ran business where I know the bartenders, the owners and my regular waitress Susan. I have never had a bad meal and even though I have some dietary restrictions, Susan has always been incredibly accommodating and attentive. This place is always so clean and has ample space in the booths which I like. I wouldn't go to another Italian place if I lived her permanently.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
This is why I rated V's the way I did. This is the response I got from the top dog from V's: Melissa, It seems that the hostess you spoke to dropped the ball here with her explanation and I will certainly cover this issue with her. In her defense, our computer system does not allow for menu items that are not available until 2:00 to be ordered before that time. If you did indeed call at 1:56, I think we could and should have found a way to take your order. Rather than rushing to leave a 1 star review, you could have also asked to speak with a manager. I'm sure that would have solved the issue and none of this back and forth would be necessary. It seems silly that you would never return to your favorite Italian restaurant over this matter, but if that's how you feel, then I suppose we can just leave it at that. Enjoy Olive Garden...
google avatar

Hughston M.

Yelp
This place is absolutely disappointing, went for brunch and EVERYTHING was so over cooked. The waitress told us that is how this normally is. Honestly how do you mess up breakfast food. Terrible, 100% do NOT recommend. Especially for $22 a person

Kathleen L.

Yelp
Great ambiance and authentic Italian food. Been in business at same location for over 50 years. Cloth table clothes & napkins makes it feel like you have had a dining experience. They still serve the plate of oil with herbs along with very good Italian bread. My favorite is eggplant Parmesan or lasagna. Add a Bloody Mary and it's a very nice dinner or lunch out.
