Wilderness Vumbura Plains

"Why book? Botswana’s wondrous Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta on the planet, flushed with waters that originate in Angola, a thousand kilometers north. In its northern reaches, Wilderness Safaris’ Vumbura Plains, rebuilt from scratch, is a contemporary retreat perched on decks over the floodplain. The thatched bedrooms are connected by timber walkways: high enough to let a hippo pass under. This is a place from which to observe the ebb and flow of life on the Delta—water lilies flowering in their multitudes and the gliding hulks of hippos—and listen to it, too: the hippos sound like bassoons tuning up, and the bell frogs like tiny xylophones. Game drives are paired with trips on the water in a traditional mokoro, or in delta boats, and with excursions in balloons and choppers. Big predators such as lions, leopards, hippos, and crocodiles join elephants, red lechwe, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, impalas, and more than 600 species of birds, from the Pel’s fishing-owl to carmine bee-eaters, and many storks, egrets, and hornbills. The lodge’s new look and feel celebrates a sense of place, centering the local staff’s talents and the minutiae of Delta wildlife through walls of illustrations of smaller beasts and the beautiful weaving of staff members, displayed and available to buy. The backstory The Botswana safari industry was gathering momentum in the 1990s, and in 1996 the Okavango Community was formed to safeguard the villagers of the region, in cooperation with the government and lodge stakeholders. The lodges are duty-bound to circulate concession fees to the villages of Seronga, Gunotsoga, Beetsha, Eretsha, and Gudigwa, home to about 5,000 people, to support their five schools, and engage in active community upliftment. The vast majority of staff at Vumbura Plains’ two mirror-image camps (“North” and “South”), and at Little Vumbura Plains, is drawn from the villages. The rooms The 14 timber, glass, and canvas-built floodplains-set rooms are spacious and contemporary, and include large decks with a covered alfresco sitting room. The color palette reflects the blues and greens of the surroundings. Design accents allude to the lilies that are the lifeblood of these waters—they appear on upholstery panels in the wardrobes, coffee tables, shower screens, and bed throws. Food and drink Vumbura specializes in healthy, largely plant-based wholesome food and wine, with certain references to hyper-local cuisine. The waterlily is a source of food in the Okavango—they dry the rhizome and pound it into a powder to make pancakes and stews. Vumbura’s “Mma Glo’s Tswii” is a stew made by the long-standing head chef, Mma Glo. The spa There is no spa as such, but masseurs can pass by the bedrooms with their tables. The area In this part of the Delta, the drier plains in the east meet the channels and wetlands of the south and east, so habitats range from mopane forest to the watery melapo, or water-soaked grasslands, and this means that wildlife is diverse, shifting through the year with the changing water levels. The Delta is a vast microcosm of termite mounds, channels, lagoons, swamps, and islands. Expect to see prides of lion and abundant giraffes, impalas, sable antelope, kudu, zebras, common waterbucks and reedbucks, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe, and Cape buffalos. Hippos and crocodiles—and that rare antelope, the sitatunga—lurk in the waterways. The service Because almost all staff come from villages in the concession, Vumbura Plains is full of sisters, aunties, cousins, and friends, and you can palpably feel the love and camaraderie between them, especially on the Boma nights when they sing and dance together by the fire. This is not a performance devised for tourism but a group of family and friends expressing their affection for each other and their culture. Who comes here? Largely safari-savvy North Americans and Europeans with a penchant for Wilderness on multi-stop safari odysseys. For families Children above 12 are welcome; those between 6 and 12 can come if a private vehicle is booked. Wilderness’ children’s program Bush Buddies, designed for ages 6 to 12, may include tracking lessons, bird and animal call identification, treasure hunts, football and volleyball games, art projects, helping in the camp kitchen, dancing, or drumming. Otherwise, children will love the thrilling-as-Attenborough drama of blood-spattered lions feasting on giraffe carcasses, watching large bull elephants crashing through the bush, and the beady eyes of hippos poking out of the water. The guides are talented at children-wrangling and can identify the faint scrape a porcupine quill has left on the Kalahari sand at a glance. Children will also love the makoro, the canoes used in the Delta for fishing, transport, shopping, and foraging. Sustainability Like other Wilderness camps, Vumbura Plains takes an active role in uplifting local communities, including throughout Covid. This includes farming support, water aid, and the education of children. Accessibility The camp will not suit those who use a wheelchair all the time, and walking-frames and occasional-use wheelchairs must be collapsible to fit on Wilderness Airplanes. Is it worth it? Seeing the waterways, palm islands, lagoons and floodplains of this spiritual landscape is a once-in-a-lifetime affair, and Vumbura Plains is a magical launch pad from which to do it. Push the boat out and book a chopper ride over the surrounding floodplains, to see crocodiles sunbaking on sandy white banks and hippos etching their channels under the clear water." - Lydia Bell

The 14 Best New Hotels of 2022 Are All Sustainable - AFAR

"The safari lodge company Wilderness Safaris has been on a long and evolving path toward sustainability since 1983. Its Botswana-based Vumbura Plains camp underwent a complete refurbishment in the spring of 2022. The 14 new guest suites are the work of interior design firm Reflecting Africa, founded by Cate Simpson, who collaborated with local craftspeople to design the high-ceilinged thatched roofs, natural wood flooring, and handwoven textiles. It’s a stylish place to retreat to after seeking out elephant herds and birdlife in the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO-designated site. Vumbura leases land from five nearby villages and employs 150 community members. Travelers will especially appreciate the lodge’s partnership with the Okavango Community Trust, created in 1996 to represent key priorities of the villages, while offering assistance in farming practices and COVID-19 related relief projects." - Jennifer Flowers

I can say its one of the nicest Room you can have in a Safari, but the service is terrible. Even if they tell you that you are free to make you program, they put you together with other peoples programs. They even wake you up early in the morning even if you tell them the night before that your not going, even open the door and gets inside to force you to go with other people. Its theirs plans or nothing. The driver wasted our time by looking a leopard munching on a zebra legs. Also the driver drove over elephants risking everyone in the car. Also to fast. Very dangerous. Also driven over a lot of new trees, obviously then blaming the elephants for that. Not a nice personnel for that price. Not a good experience!

This was our second time at Vumbura Plains. We flew in from Chitabe Lediba on a helicopter…landed in the Delta sharing a bottle of champagne. Wow it was fabulous. Vumbura Plains is beautiful and offers top notch guiding and service. We did game drives along with the lovely Mokoro at cocktail hour and another day a fast boat in the Delta. The room is a compound…private plunge pool and a beautiful comfortable room. We had great game with lots of lions and the water was coming into the Delta so the vehicle had lots of drives through water. We had the opportunity to spend time with the beautiful endangered Sable Antelope. This is a great camp to mix with other camps that offer different activities. So happy we returned.

Nothing compares to the Okavango at all. The game at this lodge was incredible, even seeing some things we’d never seen before as frequent and avid bush visits. Rooms were so lovely yet there was no air conditioner which didn’t allow for a good sleep. ||There were elements that should have been standard at this level and rate. ||Our welcome was incredible, by everyone. However the passion seemed to dissipate day by day which was disappointing. ||I left a physical review form that had a lot of feedback on simple improvements and elements that were disappointing. |We’ve had no contact and no feedback which is a pity for a lodge of this calibre. ||I want to compliment “tabasco’, whose passion was authentic and real, and chef Grace who had such a professional yet friendly way about her. And her food was lovely. ||It goes to show that South African lodges at this level are leaps ahead in catering to the finer details which sets such a high standard.

Travelling with another couple, this was our final camp before departing Botswana and was the highlight of our visit.|The rooms were very spacious with a fabulous shower, indoor and outdoor sitting areas, plunge pool and a large comfortable bed. We all found the fan and open screened doors in April was more than adequate for a restful night’s sleep.|On our last morning a herd of elephants were wading up the river just outside our villa.|The food was more than adequate, in fact quite delicious and washed down with some excellent wines.|Lazi our guide was amazing. Very attuned to the bush, sounds and environment. He led us to a kill by a pride of lions of an adult giraffe, mating leopards, another kill by a pair of lions of a young impala. We were able to sit and observe all this from just a few metres distance. The variety of animals observed astounded us and we were able to witness the advancing waters from Angola into the Delta as roads in the morning became rivers and mini lakes by that afternoon which Lazi ably drove us through.

Wow! One of my favorite African experiences! This camp is beautiful! The staff incredible, and the water and land combination you get here is epic. Love the sunken area in the room and the outside deck is wonderful for watching animals in the water. Food was of course fantastic. The game drives and Mokoro ride really made this camp special!

A wonderful high end experience without any stuffiness. Rooms all perfectly equipped and the entire staff is friendly, knowledgeable and great fun. Delicious food, impeccable service which was especially remarkable as my daughter has dietary restrictions. The guide on safari was superb. An all round winner. North Camp rules! We will be back to Vumbura Plains again and again. It won the worlds most sustainable hotel so make a smart choice, and choose it.

This time we were able to experience the northern part of the Okavango Delta with Wilderness. Vumbura Plains North is "THE" camp for us - brilliant service and staff. The game drives are very well organised and our guide Willie tracked lions and leopards thanks to his experience and tracking skills. A very special observation was the hunting of a pack of wild dogs. Truly spectacular!!! Whilst relaxing in our beautiful accommodation, which has been thought through to the last detail, we were regularly visited by elephants, kudus and warthogs. Hippos are present day and night. Many thanks to the entire Wilderness team, starting with Cara and the planning and ending with our guide Willie at the airstrip. A wonderful high-end experience.

Very spacious accommodation with comfortable bed and expected amenities at this Premier level - but the should have sprayed before we arrived to minimise the number of small insects; and they should have managed to change the too-heavy duvet at the first time of asking.||Food generally was of good quality with superb beef, skilfully cooked. Yet, breakfast tended to be less well organised. A bush lunch was outstanding ( and well done to Jackson)||Our guide ( Big O) was outstanding being a good driver whether through water or on dry land and he was patient in working out where we would get the best sightings and how to follow them as they moved on.
