I hate to review anything without including some positives, so here they are: 1. Our room was very large, especially for Europe. 2. It is centrally located and near just about everything.
Ok, why the bad the review? Let me explain. We arrived in Amsterdam on a Friday, via train and while on board one of our pieces of luggage broke, major hassle. The cab drops us off at the Hotel, where there are 2 security guys who watch us struggle to get in the hotel with 3 pieces of luggage, 1 of which is broken. We finally get to one of the 2 elevators and a bellman finally shows up. Oh so now you offer help? We go to the 6th floor to check in. Did I mention it is so dark, I actually could have used a flashlight? At the desk, they make sure we know how cool this hotel is, and proceed to be unable to locate my Husband's membership status. FIne, no big deal. We get checked in and go back to 1 of the 2 elevators for this very large hotel, and they send Luis to accompany us to our room. Thank god they did, because neither of our room keys worked. Luis gets us in our room, and proceeds to show us around it. He makes sure to point out the art work, which represents women as chirping birds. At this point both of our jaws are on the ground due to insane sexism of which they seem to be very proud. Perhaps their motto is "Chicks, Amirite?" Ok, different culture, maybe this is normal. Luis leaves and gets us new keys, only 1 of which actually works. Luis leaves and returns again and now we finally have 2 keys that work. We go downstairs and ask the concierge to make a dinner reservation for us at a restaurant for the following evening. We are not rubes, so we naturally tipped the concierge.
Did I mention it is Friday night? Did I mention the Hotel is the place to be on Friday night? Did I mention this means people walking out of the Hotel feel compelled to scream at each other and wake the Hotel guests who are sleeping at 4 am?
The following morning we order breakfast, coffee and a basket of pastries. After 60 minutes and no breakfast, we call to see what is the delay. The delay was they never placed our order and told us this. After another 30 minutes it finally arrived. I will admit, they did comp the meal, so there is that. We get dressed, turn on the "clean room" sign and leave for the day. Around 3 in the afternoon, we return to discover no one has cleaned our room. We locate a staff member, who contacts his supervisor who arranges to have our room cleaned. Since we need to get out to do this, we stop by the concierge to find out if they made our dinner reservation because no one has advised us that we do or do not have a reservation. We are assured that yes, we have a dinner reservation at our restaurant at the time we have asked for and this is the same concierge to whom we made our original request. Great, we arrive at the restaurant at the appointed time to discover, they have never been contacted by our hotel and we have no reservation. They graciously seated us anyway.
I've only included the first 24 hours we were in the Hotel, but let me just say things did not particularly improve over the next 4 days. If you are cool enough to not care if your room is cleaned or if the food you order shows up or even if you can actually get INTO your room, you are cool enough to stay here. We are clearly not that cool.
