Houston’s Best Hand Roll Restaurants

"Both Memorial and River Oaks locations of this sushi restaurant offer well over a dozen sushi combinations, presented in the diner’s choice of a sushi roll or hand roll. Find Houston-centric signatures like the Memorial, spicy salmon or sushi paired with avocado, spicy mayo, and green onion, or the Belt 8, made with tempura kani, tuna, whitefish, serrano, Sriracha, tempura crunch, and eel sauce. Pair with its fried or grilled skewers or its noodle dishes, like its silky beef udon." - Brittany Britto Garley

Nice atmosphere, very friendly wait staff, good sushi, perfect place for a date. I’ve been to a lot of great sushi spots in the area but Wa Sushi has its own vibe; it feels a little more upscale without the high prices. It’s bigger than it looks on the inside too and the food’s great. I’m definitely coming back to try different rolls.

Google
I love eating their sushi rolls; the fish always tastes fresh and you can tell the chefs prepare each roll with care. I always ordered one of their WA premium rolls, I especially enjoy the red dragon and rainbow roll. The sushi rolls are also decently priced for the quality. Employees are friendly and the atmosphere is nice. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for good sushi!

This was our first time visiting WA Sushi & Izakaya and it won’t be the last. The waiting staff was exceptional from start to finish. They were very welcoming and attentive ensuring that our dining experience was nothing short of excellent. The service was quick and efficient, with both food and drinks promptly delivered to my table. The staff's knowledge of the menu items, both drinks and food, was impressive. They were able to offer insightful recommendations and answer any questions I had, adding to the overall enjoyment of the evening. Now let's talk about the food—the highlight of any dining experience. The Baja and Fantasy rolls were truly outstanding and quickly became my favorites. The combination of flavors and textures was a delight to the palate. The Pan Fried Pork Dumplings were another standout, perfectly cooked and bursting with delicious flavors. The Beef Teriyaki had a tantalizing sauce that enhanced the tender meat, leaving me wanting more. The Truffle Salmon Sashimi was a unique and delightful treat, with the truffle adding a touch of decadence to the delicate fish. The Seared Ahi Tuna was impeccably prepared, beautifully seared on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth tender on the inside. The Mixed Vegetable and Shrimp Tempura provided a delightful crunch and were a perfect accompaniment to the meal. Finally, the Eggplant with Yuzu was a refreshing and flavorful dish that added a vibrant touch to the overall dining experience. Overall, our visit to WA Sushi & Izakaya was truly memorable. The atmosphere, with its relaxing music, cherry blossoms, candles, and water feature, created a serene and authentic ambiance. The service was exceptional, with friendly and knowledgeable staff attending to every detail. And the food was simply outstanding, with standout dishes like the Baja and Fantasy rolls, Pan Fried Pork Dumplings, and Truffle Salmon Sashimi. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience that combines ambiance, service, and delectable cuisine.

Google
Wanted to try a new Sushi place for a Sunday night date with my boyfriend and this placed popped up near me (Google search). This was previously Z Sushi (which I have never been to). Inside is very pretty 😍 💕 and gives very calm vibes ☺️ 😊 The service was wonderful 👏 the food was great 👍 we have a usual Sushi place in Pasadena. But Wa Sushi 🍣 is the new place for us. We will definitely go back, and invite our friends and family. Definitely give them a try.

Either I’m broke or prices went up real high! Ordered mussel udon! Big portions but more soup than udon, flavor is ok 3.5/5 Cute decorations and plenty of different areas to seat!

Google
The food is very good here. The sushi is excellent quality. I wish they offer combination plates or bento boxes. For example if you want teriyaki chicken and tempura you have to order two separate dishes. And each is a well sized portion. I’d rather get half the portion of each and combine it into one plate. There is a sushi bar with plenty of seating as well as tables all around. They take reservations which is nice if you have a large party. They have their own dedicated parking lot which is great. I would definitely come back again.

Google
Sushi is fresh and good but overpriced af. What's crazy is I can get a tastier chirashi bowl with bigger portions for 2/3 the price in San Francisco! Also their miso soup is way too salty. I didn't come here to eat salt. This place feels pretentious, would not come back IMO.

Excellent sushi bar and wonderful service. Jara is a very kind and courteous waitress who scores 100% in customer satisfaction. Highly recommend in dining experience...Yay!😃

Yelp
Came here to eat and watch game 2 of the dodgers/yankees World Series. Sat at the bar (the bar bar, not the sushi bar) and had a great time. The bar food is great, 4 Japanese beers on tap and easy going, attentive, caring staff. Sushi is good and other snacks are great. Menu is huge, good saki options as well as an extensive bar that includes some good Japanese whiskeys. Enjoy

Yelp
We were looking for something light and local and Wa Sushi & Izakaya fit the bill. It was close by and reviews looked pretty good. This place is decked out in beautiful decorations as well. As appetizer, we ordered the Salmon Skin Salad. The Salmon Skin Salad came out surprisingly big in portion. It was mix of regular greens, carrots, and raw onions. I'm not usually a big fan of raw onion, but I'm fine with small amounts. These weren't too sharp, so it was not bad, but the star of the salad has to be the combination of avocado and salmon skin. There were plenty of Salmon Skin pieces to share between the two of us, and it was super crunchy! Perfectly fried! The avocado added a nice creamy texture to the dish. Having both of those in a single bite was absolutely delicious! As for the Yakitori dishes, we ordered: - Chicken Gizzard - This was unfortunately pretty tough. It took all my might just to chew it off the skewer because using chopsticks did not work. - Chicken Thigh with Onion - This was probably the best of the Yakitori dishes, but still subpar. It was just slightly moist, but more so a tad overcooked. Not as juicy as I'd expect chicken thighes to be. - Beef Tongue - This was not what I expected at all. I thought these usually come in small slices, but these came bunched up. These were not only hard to get off the skewer like the gizzard, they were also overcooked and tough as well. I honestly didn't know what I was eating until I went down the list of what we ordered. - Baby Scallop with Garlic - Overcooked as well. It doesn't have that freshness taste to it. - Gingko Nuts - I was intrigued with this one because I've never had Gingko Nuts yakitori style. These were okay, better than the meet. They had a tough outer skin, but not bad. It's like a hard, chewy bean. The first few Gingko Nuts at the top of the skewer was a little bitter because it was a tad burnt. The middle ones were better. Lastly, we finished off with an Amberjack Collar. We originally wanted the Yellowtail Collar, but they ran out of it. They're generous with proportions and I have to say that this was the second to best dish we got. It was kind of moist, soft, and we had a lot to share between the two of us. For $20, this is a great deal compared to what we normally get in the Bay. I'd give this place a 3.5/5 stars. We came for skewers and a small bite, but the skewers were just not great. The dishes with fish in them on the other hand were great. The place itself looks a bit fancy, and nicely decorated. Service here was really friendly as well. One other thing to note is although they have a private parking lot, we encountered a ridiculous line to get in (we ended up going out of the line and cutting into the lot like the car in front of us). The line turned out to be the drive-through line for In-N-Out. I don't know how often it happens, but I see some complaints about it in other reviews.

Yelp
Don't really like the location of this place because there's just so many cars waiting at the light or waiting to go to in n out blocking this restaurants entrance. Parking is available right in front of the restaurant. The interior is decorated very nicely and it's much bigger inside than I thought. The quality of the food is good and fresh. The waiter was friendly and attentive. We ordered a bunch of rolls to share and the Baja roll really stood out! The red onion in there gave it such a unique twist of flavor. So delicious that we had to get a second order of it! Overall it was a great meal.

Yelp
Pretty casual place for a dinner out, not crowded at all so lots of space if you want to bring a group. All of their deep fried food was cooked perfectly, the baby octopus and soft shelled crab were super crispy. Even the crispy rice under spicy tuna, but the rice was drenched in sauce so it was way too salty. We got the sashimi platter and it came with some snappers, yellowtail, mackerel, amberjack, octopus, geoduck, and tuna with uni and caviar. The sashimi cuts were pretty thick and it was filling with 3 people sharing. The only thing bad was the black caviar on top of the uni. The sea bream collar was huge, tastes okay, and smelled fishy. Their mango crab salad was sweet and refreshing but their house salad was drenched in way too much sauce. And lastly the squid was huge but it was way too chewy. Our server was really nice and knowledgeable about the fish and recommendations.

Yelp
I am so glad we stopped by today to enjoy the restaurant. Don't be afraid to stick in that burger line and make that right into this sushi place! I love having the option of both sushi and skewers. It was a cute place. Aside from fresh sushi and rolls, service was on point. She was very attentive and provided great recs.

Yelp
Loved it here! Ambiance was super old school. The building felt super classic and quiet. It was cool and a great place to come to escape the summer heat. It reminded me of an old 50s restaurant. I sat at the bar the best place to get some quality sushi and service. And I greatly enjoyed the fish selection, it was chefs choice!

Yelp
I always see this restaurant on my way to In & Out and one time waiting around the bend at In & Out I looked this place up on Yelp and it had high reviews. Usually sushi in the SGV area is subpar or super expensive which I don't understand since there is a large dominant Asian population here. I guess majority of Japanese chefs are located in the Torrance/Gardena region which makes sense but was hoping over the last decade it would change. Alas, we have WA sushi in Alhambra! The best entrance to get here is by South Garfield. Just know that once you exit by 5pm the In & Out crowd WILL block you. Not to deter you from coming here but just be patient upon exiting and you'll get out of there. I came around 3:30pm and there were plenty of parking available next to the restaurant. The restaurant itself is unpretentious and upon coming in, the sushi bar chefs greet you along with the waitress. There isn't any happy hour sushi specials if that's what you're looking for. It's more of an Izakaya with premium sushi and sashimi offerings. They do have sake specials but that's about it. What I ordered: Salmon Skin Salad (A+) - Who doesn't love an extra crispy Salmon skin!? The amount of crunchy skin on this salad was superb! Probably the best one I had in a very long time and that's saying a lot since I'm so picky! The portion is larger than expected. Salmon Tamago Ikura Uni Chirashi (A) - All my favorites in one bowl! I was ecstatic they had uni and it wasn't all melty and disfigured. I forgot to ask if it was Santa Barbara uni but either way it was sweet and fresh! The tamago and salmon could have been sliced vertically over the rice instead of cubed which makes the dish look too chopped up. Could do better on the presentation for sure. Would definitely come back with friends to try their other dishes. Service was prompt and friendly. It's refreshing to know there is a standout sashimi restaurant in the SGV now for all my cravings!

Yelp
I've been to this restaurant before, but this is my first time visiting to Wa Sushi & Izakaya. Parking is easy to find as there is a parking lot dedicated to this restaurant. It may be difficult to drive into the parking lot if the line at In-N-Out is long. I stopped by for dinner on a weekday. Here's what I got: Mixed Tempura Negi Toro Roll Philly Roll Pork Katsu Cutlet Entree The server is kind and friendly. I feel welcomed and taken care of during my visit. I enjoyed everything I ordered, especially the red spicy sauce that comes with pork katsu cutlet. I'd definitely visit again to try different items!

Yelp
I've been to Wa Sushi a couple of times and each time has been a great experience. The host/waitress is super welcoming and always makes sure we are well cared for. The first time I visited I had a chirashi bowl and the second time I opted for the omakase. You really can't go wrong here; the fish is well prepared and the ratio to rice is perfect. Be sure to check out their specials board for some great deals. I will be back soon to get my sushi fix!

Yelp
Came here on a whim on a random Wednesday night and really enjoyed our meal! The tuna crispy rice was so good! Crispy (rice was still chewy and not too hardened) and lots of tuna and avo! The salmon skin salad was also good! It was hugee and the salmon skin was sooo crispy! We also got the Alamo roll which was solid. Pretty big pieces and not too saucy. And then we got the beef bone nabe! It was sooo flavorful and comforting. Service was quick and attentive & the ambiance is cozy and chill.

Yelp
Server was friendly and the sushi was pretty good. For a place that looks like a hole in the wall, the fish wasn't too bad. The entrance is slightly a shit show because of the in and out by the corner but I would say it's worth it. The place also looks like they do a lot of daily promos like 50% your second beer etc. which is always nice.

Yelp
Our 3rd visit to Wa last night and we continue to love it! Parking: Located in a not so convenient area on Garfield Ave. Just know that you may need to fight the In N Out line from around the corner in order to get into the parking lot. The parking lot is never full so you'll find a spot as soon as you squeeze in. Background: Wa Sushi took over from an older Japanese restaurant that I, nor many people frequented. Grateful for Wa's addition to the neighborhood eats though. This has become our special occasion family spot. Interior: Last night we were celebrating my son's 21st birthday. Ready for sake and sushi as soon as we were greeted with smiles at the door. We enjoyed the water feature and huge cherry blossom tree that illuminates the entire lobby/bar area. It only took minutes for us to be seated. There is a full bar in the front of the restaurant and a full sushi bar in the back of the restaurant. With several table seating dining areas spread throughout. The dim lighting and Japanese decor sets the mood for a quiet, possibly romantic meal. Food/drink: The menu is rather large with plenty of options besides sushi. Even the non seafood lovers have severals options. We ordered a large bottle of hot sake to share with our edamame and pan-fried pork dumplings for appetizers. We placed an order for several rolls to share and in no time they were rolling in. Sushi: -Dragon Roll: inside: eel, cucumber/outside: avocado -Tiger Roll: inside: crabmeat, cucumber, avocado, shrimp tempura/outside: boiled shrimp -Seared Albacore Roll: inside: softshell crab, cucumber/outside: spicy tuna, albacore, serrano chilis -Rattlesnake Roll: inside: crabmeat, cucumber, avocado, shrimp tempura/ outside: spicy tuna, eel -Fantasy Roll: inside: spicy tuna, softshell crab, avocado, shrimp tempura, cilantro/outside: rice paper The Fantasy Roll was our absolute favorite. Light with the rice paper, tons of flavor, the presentation was creative, and the trio of sauces provided on the plate were perfection. We loved it so much we ordered it twice. Service: Always friendly and attentive. Every single staff member greets us with smiles on their faces. Price: A little on the pricey side, but you'd question the quality if it was cheap sushi, right? The freshness and flavor are worth the price. Acceptable for these special occasions. Thanks for the entire Wa staff for making us feel welcome. See you again soon!

Yelp
TLDR: Average rolls for an above average price with an overwhelming menu of options as a Japanese restaurant that tries to be too many things and not really great at anything. There's nothing inherently wrong with the food, it tasted fine. Uni was fresh, hotate was fresh, tuna was a little fishy, rolls were all as expected. Salmon skin in the salmon skin roll was staled. Kushiyaki were hit and miss, some items like the wings and the bacon wrapped mochi were good but the beef tongue and gizzards were super over cooked so it was tough as rubber. Service was attentive, interior was a bit stuffy but generally clean and respectable.

Yelp
This is our favorite sushi spot in the area! We live in Alhambra and this is the only sushi spot we eat at. We celebrate all our special occasions here and now family loves this spot too. The vibe is always welcoming and the workers are super sweet and caring. Have never had a bad experience here and have been coming here two years now! They are always very accommodating and everybody I've taken with me here, loves it

Yelp
First time going to this place, and it took a bit longer since it's next to In N Out, so there was a bit of a delay getting to the parking lot. There was space in the parking lot luckily. Didn't have to wait to get in, got seated quickly. Service was pretty prompt. Got their blue crab uni bowl, kushi yaki set, miso eggplant, spicy garlic edamame, and Alaskan roll. The blue crab uni bowl was really good, sushi rice was good, and lots of blue crab and uni served in the dish. Miso eggplant was good, portion felt a bit small though. Garlic edamame was good and not really spicy. Kushi yaki set was decent, but it took a while for it to come out and compared to other yakitori places out there, it didn't really stand out. I really liked the salmon yakitori though! Alaskan roll was good as well and the salmon was fresh and fatty. Overall, I would give Wa Sushi & Izakaya a 4.5/5 stars. Seafood here was fresh and good quality rice. Nothing special for yakitori, so I would definitely come back here next time for just their sushi and omakase offerings.

Yelp
The food is delicious. The rolls are amazingly delicious. They accommodate to what you can and cannot eat. I give this place more than five stars for kindness and Great Customer Service They are very, very wonderful if you're sick and you can't eat certain things they're on it and they will accommodate your needs if you're allergic to things they will accommodate your needs. They will ask you what's wrong so they can avoid giving you something. They are so kind and so thoughtful of their customers you don't get that anywhere. I highly recommend the habanero roll so delicious. Great little spicy kick to it. Dragon roll super yummy. Great place to dine in. The place is nice and quiet and relaxing. I love their cherry blossom trees and I super super love the One piece anime Chopper poster. Definitely coming back!!!

Yelp
We were visiting the area and had a craving for some good Japanese food before leaving town. This place had plenty of good reviews on here, so we figured we would be pretty safe to try out. First of all, the interior decor is very modern casual with a loooong sushi bar with plenty of seating. The place is a pretty decent size, dimly lit, and very comfortable to enjoy a good meal. We showed up a bit early so the place was very quiet....just the way we like to dine. Anyway, the young lady serving us was very sweet, soft spoken, and was very attentive to our questions and requests for additional condiments. We were kind of hungry and had a hard time deciding what to order as everything on the menu sounded so good....and had all my favorite Japanese dishes. So, we eventually decided on the Chicken Katsu Plate....comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and a small salad, an order of the Mixed Tempura, a Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail neck), and the 15 piece Sashimi Moriawase. To start out with the good....our hands down favorite was definitely the grilled hamachi kama. The piece of fish neck was a good size, meaty, and grilled perfectly....the meat was so moist, tender, and simply melted in our mouths....perfectly grilled and delicious....we also ordered some Sriracha chilli sauce to go with for some heat....yum! The mixed tempura was pretty good too. The batter was not too thick and not too thin, had a perfect crunch, and the shrimp and vegetables tasted very fresh. The shrimp was a pretty small, but we didn't mind too much. The Sashimi was very well presented....very pretty, and I loved the FRESH wasabi ....kind of looked like relish.....and it went great with the sashimi that tasted quite fresh. My issue however, was that the sashimi should have been served on a bed of crushed ice to keep it cooler. The sashimi was good, but was not served at the right temperature, in our honest opinion. Least favorite of ours was the chicken katsu. The chicken meat was a bit dry and slightly tough for our liking. And, the breading kept falling off whenever we tried to pick up a piece. I think they need to work on this dish a bit. Other than that, we mostly enjoyed our dining experience here....pretty good food, pleasant ambiance, and very good service.

Yelp
We ended up here on accident, because we went to another sushi restaurant nearby and they ignored us for over 15 minutes. They weren't even busy, with plenty of open tables (more than half) and just ignored us. When we showed up at Wa Sushi, we were a little concerned because it was empty. Well, glad we took the chance, because it was awesome and the service was great (so nice we were the only ones). I usually judge the quality of a sushi restaurant by whether or not they have toro. If they have toro, do they have o-toro and chu-toro. This place had it just listed as toro, so I was a little worried, well it was great. The blue crab roll was packed full of crab. They also have yakitori (skewers) so we tried them too. Everything was good. Chicken meatball was just ok and the lamb was a little overcooked for my personal preference. Shrimp tempura was light and crispy. Large selection of sake too! Anyways, don't overlook this place, because it was wonderful.

Yelp
Parking: Located at the back of In N Out, they have their parking lot that is gated off and separate from In N Out. Interior: SO BEAUTIFUL!! Inside looks so spacious and there are about two sushi bars and tables throughout the restaurant. It gives you a mix of old-school sushi but a little classy restaurant. Food: Kushiyaki Lunch Set (5 pc grilled skewer, California roll, miso soup) their grilled skewers were a bit cold and rubbery. I would just stick to getting skewers at places where you can see it grilled in front of you. California roll had more flavor than the skewers. Primo Sushi and Sashimi Bento (5 pcs nigiri sushi, 5 pc sashimi, mixed tempura, salad, miso soup) only during lunch special. My favorite set to get, good for its value and quality to share with 2 people if you want to try a bit of sashimi. Their sashimi is so fresh and buttery. Nice set of variety. Their salad is fresh and is nicely paired by their miso-based dressing.

Yelp
Nestled in a corner but hard to miss. The iconic instagram symbol on their building makes this yummy treasure noticeable and memorable! Been here a couple of times now and I'll forever keep coming back. If you love juicy, thick, almost melts in your mouth salmon - this is the place to go. Order their salmon lover plate! You won't be saying it wasn't enough salmon. Excellent portion and the cut of their sashimi pieces was perfect. Parking lot is never full which I love! Ambiance is tranquil as soon as you walk in. A serene fountain, dim lighting, and beautiful cherry blossom trees all over to truly make you feel like you're walking into a scenic painting. Great for groups, dates, and even hanging out with family on the weekends. Booths and tables make it easy to accommodate just about anything. Menu is almost never ending. They've mastered the art of offering a variety. Tried the fried tofu appetizer, miso soup, and salmon skin salad. My favorite was the tofu. Nice crispy texture on the outside but still amazingly soft on the inside. Four pieces wasn't enough for my hunger. Shared the dragon and Hawaiian roll but had the salmon lovers plate to myself. It was a mouthful but delicious. This place is truly a hidden find! Stop by if you can build up the strength to drive pass the in n out next door. But it'll be worth it if you do stop in.

Yelp
I would give more stars, but the smell when you enter the restaurant is very funky and smells musty and even slightly like sewer. I ordered via the Yelp app and got three items that totaled $38 with tax. It's a little on the high side, in particular $15 for a plain udon soup with no protein added. The two rolls were good, a California and a Yellowtail which made up $19 of the total bill. Staff was friendly, but not exactly welcoming. I think the atmosphere of the place would be much better if there wasn't such an offensive smell when you come in, in particular because you are here for fresh fish, which doesn't exactly inspire the desire to partake in eating said fresh fish. I was very glad I was taking my order to-go.

Yelp
I was impressed my hubby found this spot for Valentine's this year (2024). We have never been here and believe they just took over an old sushi spot. We got there around 6:30 pm without a reservation and felt lucky to get seated considering they were so busy and had many reserved tables. Although it seemed like a chaotic night, the workers were all very friendly. I definitely was reluctant to order since we usually go for discounted specials. I thought the sushi quality was pretty amazing considering people said I wouldn't like sushi anymore after going to Japan. We started off with shishito peppers and miso soup and had a rainbow and Alaskan roll, a yuzu salmon and WA Chirashi bowl. All the fish was fresh and tasty and the rice was just right. I thought the shishito peppers was one of the best I ever had. The Chirashi bowl came with the special wasabi which was also really good. I definitely over ate. It's next to the In and Out burger place so getting into the parking can be a bit of a wait. They had pretty cherry blossom decor that made for some cute pictures. I would definitely like to see what this place is like when they are less busy.

Yelp
Ambiance, food, service 10 out of 10! Every time! I promise you will get your sushi fix and the setting will keep you coming back! Delicious , fast and friendly. Ask for Hará she's all smiles! My Personal favorite spicy scallop hand roll and the sunset roll, don't forget your hot sake! Cheers and happy new year 2025!

Food and service were excellent. Only issue is to fight the In N Out car line to get into the parking area.

Yelp
An assuming sushi restaurant on the corner of Atlantic and Garfield, right next to In n Out. I've passed by this restaurant for years and decided to stop by when craving sushi for dinner. I had no expectations but by the time dinner was over, I became a fan! I've said this before but if you come to a sushi restaurant, you should always sit at the bar. If you're served by sushi chefs who are personable and great at their profession, it's likely you'll have a good time and get to try their off the menu recommendations. That is exactly what happened tonight. After making small talk with the sushi chefs, I found out they were under new management and that their seafood was flown in every 1-2 weeks. We even got a grilled fish head on the house, which was such a treat! In exchange, we offered some sake shots and got to know our sushi chefs more. The rolls were standard and the sushi was fresh and great. The wait staff is great too. Everyone's super attentive and nice. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Yum! Nice quiet peaceful restaurant, perfect for a date or family dinner. Tasty and fresh sushi! Fried squid legs were good, and salmon plate definitely satisfied the salmon craving. Overall 10/10.

Yelp
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: The quality of sushi is AMAZING!!! AMBIANCE: Noise level is average, can be dark in some areas. DRESS CODE: Smart Casual ORDERED: - crispy rice tuna - BBQ beef plate - omakase (we got a variety of sushi and it was amazing!!!) - oysters (fresh!) - tuna + uni handroll - blue crab handroll SERVICE: Service was exceptional!! PRICE: really depends on what you order but can quickly total $100+pp if you're ordering a lot of sushi. I still think the price is reasonable for the quality of fish! PARKING: the location of the entrance can be tricky as it's right at a busy intersection (near In n Out). There is a private lot, with only one way in and one way out. Food: 5/5 stars Service: 5/5 stars Venue: 4/5 stars

Yelp
Always have a great experience here! This is the new and improved Z-sushi, a spot my family would constantly dine at. But now, it's even better than ever! The food is really fresh, and you can tell they use the best ingredients. They don't cheap out on the crab and the portions are incredibly generous. The menu is extensive with a lot of variety so I will never get tired of coming here. Some of my favorites include: - Calamari - Mango Crab Salad - Baked Blue Crab Handroll - Chawanmushi - Beef Udon Soup - Miso Black Cod - Banana Tempura Service is always great here too. We love getting dinner here!

Yelp
I don't know how anyone could visit Wa Sushi and not give it 5 stars!! We were looking for a new place after our go to spot closed and visited this spot based on the reviews. We're soooo happy! It felt like a relaxing oasis inside, the staff including the owners daughter were all so nice and the food was excellent! We tried many items including: scallop, salmon belly, sweet live shrimp, ankimo, wagu, golden eye snapper, oyster shooters, halibut fin and more. Every piece was so fresh and beautiful. Not only incredibly delicious but artistically presented, with simple elegance and wonderful portion. We LOVE fresh wasabi which was given without having to ask for it and the sake selection was fantastic. This is our new spot for sure and many thanks to our sushi chef Chai. Just wonderful!!!

Yelp
Sushi was fantastic and very fresh. Large menu! Had no problems making modifications (which can be difficult with shellfish restrictions and kids!) Served was attentive and very friendly. Absolutely will be back with our entire family.

Yelp
I came here on a rainy weekend as my wife had just delivered and was craving sushi after not eating any raw food for 9 months. We always want to try new restaurants, and we saw that Wa Sushi was rated quite well on Yelp. We stopped here for lunch. Nobody was in the restaurant because it was raining and quite early in the day. We asked to be seated at the counter for a more authentic sushi experience. The lighting is fairly dim to allow for a more gentle atmosphere. The sushi chef started by giving us ginger and wasabi. The wasabi was not authentic grated wasabi, but rather it was colored horseradish. The chef did give us a very generous refill of ginger though. We ended up sharing an order of tamago nigiri and the lunch sushi bento. The sushi bento came with fried tofu, tempura, miso eggplant, grilled salmon, Korean style pickles, various nigiri, and spicy tuna maki. The tamago was fairly standard, though I liked that the chef added 2 small "sashimi" pieces on top. The sushi bento was very generously portioned. The spicy tuna was fairly standard, as was the tempura and the fried tofu. However, I loved the various nigiri pieces, the miso eggplant, and above all else the grilled salmon. The grilled salmon was very generously seasoned with salt. Overall, very solid price tag for the large portions of sushi.

Yelp
Visiting on business and lot of clients said this is one of the best sushi restaurants in Pasadena. Funky smell when you walk in. I got the salmon plate which everyone recommended but it was nothing special. The other sushi dishes were nothing special as well. Service also took forever and the place wasn't even packed.

Yelp
I love the sashimi here since it's so fresh and delicious. Most definitely the sashimi platter and Hokkaido scallops! Our waiter was nice and was able to recommend the sashimi platter full of assorted sashimi. Love how the restaurant has touches of Japanese especially with the koi fish pond and cherry blossom.

Yelp
I have been a customer here for years, but I noticed the freshness and quality decrease a lot recently. Got stomach pain twice after eating here. I will not return.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday evening after first two picks were closed. Surprised that it should have been busier but it they did seem to have e a steady flow of business. Chirashi Omakase was super fresh. They even accommodated my allergy to Sweet Shrimp and substituted. Chirashi is filling and definitely worth it. Also had Salmon Sushi and Avocado Roll. They have my favorite sake - Kikusui, available in three sizes.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Sunday. There was no wait and pretty empty. Good quality fresh sushi. We had the sunset roll, rattlesnake roll, negitoro roll, yellowtail roll, chicken breast skewer and chicken gizzard skewer. The sunset roll is very refreshing and with a jalapeño kick. I also liked the chicken gizzard skewer, its perfectly cooked crunchy and not too hard. It's located next to innout and the entrance and parking lot can be blocked by the innout traffic. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. Will be coming back to try the lunch combos.

Yelp
My dad wanted sushi and we've already been to mikomi several times so we decided to try this place. Parking was a bit difficult; it took a while to turn into their driveway while we waited at the light among cars lined up for in-n-out. We ordered a few rolls to share and food was not bad. The interior had a dark ambiance nicely decorated with cherry blossoms (my dad definitely made a comment about not being able to read the menu in the dark haha). Service was good and our server made sure our water cups were always topped off. I saw that they offer omakase so that might be worth trying one day.

Yelp
My coworkers and I work nearby and wanted to have some sushi. We didn't want to have to go all the way to Pasadena and trouble ourselves with finding street parking. Lo' and behold, we found this place and I'm so happy we did. Parking was easy on a Wednesday afternoon. Service was great. The menu is huge so there's something for everyone. We shared all of our orders with my favorite being the uni and toro bowl. I do have to say, I would skip the chicken karaage next time because it wasn't juicy or as crispy as I would like. All their rolls that we ordered were great. Price point was fair too! Highly highly recommend!

Yelp
Brought my friend since childhood here for her birthday . Beautiful restaurant with a decorated interior of cherry blossoms and many sectioned off rooms to be seated in. Didn't enjoy the Agedashi tofu. The sauce is WAY too sweet. Disappointed. Ika Geso was tasty, seasoned well and crispy. Would recommend the Toro Uni bowl. Negi Toro was delicious on a bed of rice of beside a serving of deliciously sweet and fresh Uni topped with some sort of caviar and a bit of ikura. Portion was just enough for one person. If you are a big eater this probably wouldn't be enough. I would pass on blue crab bowl unless you REALLY like blue crab. It was dry blue crab shreds on a bed of rice with uni and ikura much like the Tuna bowl. Would come back just for that Uni though. Service was fine, since we rarely hangout, my friend and I were constantly talking and the waitress seemed extremely reluctant to interrupt us.. it was a bit awkward. but besides that it was fine.

Yelp
I feel mixed about this place. I've only ever ordered take out, so I can't speak to how it is inside. The packaging of their takeout is amazing, usually put it in a cardboard box, with the rolls individually packaged. The first time I got sushi from here I'd say it was a 5/5 - we tried various rolls, with the scallops and tuna being especially good. The second time, I ordered rolls but also some nigiri. The nigiri was pretty terrible. Stringy, hard pieces in our nigiri to the point some was inedible. Tuna nigiri was fine, I believe it was the amberjack or red snapper that was not good. Maybe it was an off day, it happens. But there's too many sushi spots, (and with sushi being expensive), for me to want to try this place again. But I'd say the rolls were pretty solid.

Yelp

Yelp
Wa sushi has the cutest ambiance. The chefs make beautiful sushi, the waitress is always helpful and sweet. We love coming here but looks like everyone knows about this hidden secret.

Yelp
Took my mother here for Mother's Day. Once you walk inside, you're greeted by a nice waterfall. The man who greeted me was very welcoming and accommodating. We were seated right away then we were served right away too. We ordered baby octopus as a starter. Then Hawaiian and seared albacore rolls. Last but not least, the spicy mussels udon. All the food was amazing. Hats off to the chefs working behind the scenes
