Those who enjoy the "dinner and show" concept should check out Wabi Sabi. I had a fun experience trying teppanyaki for the first time last night with group of four. We were able to evade the dinner-time rush, as we arrived at around 6pm and were seated right away.
Our teppanyaki chef was lively and very friendly; he was joking with us for the entire duration of his tableside performance. He did many of the tricks that come to mind when one thinks of teppanyaki, such as assembling a volcano out of sliced onions, and balancing eggs on his spatulas, which he would then crack, fry, and toss into the mouths of willing diners. My cousin told me that she was relieved that this chef was the one that had been assigned to our table; apparently, she had had a previous experience in which a taciturn chef performed the same tricks (including the food tossing), and his lack of connection with the diners had made it awkward.
I ordered the New York steak and shrimp dinner combo, which included salad, a light brothy soup, steamed rice, and a shrimp appetizer (which turned out to be a couple pieces of shrimp that are grilled in front of you). The steak was cooked perfectly rare, and somehow soft - very minimal chewing involved. The chef recommended that I try it with wasabi and soy sauce, and I found his suggestion complemented the rare meat perfectly.
Overall, I found that this was a really fun experience. It was reasonably priced, the staff was attentive, and I now have enough leftovers for two more meals (lol).
