Waffle Cafe is now open on the Avenue of Fashion in Detroit - Eater Detroit

"Walking into Waffle Cafe on Livernois Avenue feels like a hug from your Detroit grandmother. Customers are immediately greeted with warmth, smiles, and the aroma of griddled deliciousness. The sounds of soulful tunes of R&B and Motown hits playing overhead from the speakers and the work of local artists such as renowned muralist Felle invite Motor City residents to get comfortable with familiar depictions. Spacious lounge and two-top seating beckon you to relax. For owners Kimyana Freeman and Larry Phillips — who previously ran A Bit of Soul Breakfast Cafe in Redford Township before closing amid the pandemic in 2020 before opening Waffle Cafe on June 1 — creating the perfect vibe is just the beginning. The star of the place is the namesake waffle, which is represented here in 43 varieties. Belgian-style waffles get dressed up with savory toppings like Buffalo chicken tenders (available fried or grilled); loaded baked potato fixings like sour cream, shredded cheese, and bacon; or are made pizza-style with cheese and pepperoni. Flights of mini waffles are available with up to three savory or sweet toppings. Filling wraps are made with crepe-thin waffles that are stuffed with breakfast staples like bacon, egg, and cheese or shrimp, chicken, or veggies. Salads are served in waffle shell bowls. When the temperatures start to go down, these bowls will be used to serve soup. Sweet temptations include options like a chocolate waffle made a la mode with a scoop of mint chip ice cream, rainbow-swirled “Zuperman” (a play on Michigan’s iconic Superman ice cream), and banana pudding. Other non-waffle menu items that delight include the catfish bites, lightly battered in cornmeal, and then seasoned, and deep-fried to perfection. Freeman tells Eater that this dish, in particular, has caught on so much that one customer placed four separate orders in one visit. Other specialties include hand-dipped ice cream, coffee and tea. Bonus: Every waffle can be prepared without meat or dairy. Wash it all down with the spot’s fresh lemonades in flavors like lavender or the Very Berry. Just to name a few. If you’re sensing how creativity exudes from just about every detail here, that’s because both of the co-owners are also musical artists. Freeman’s stage name is ZanYé, while Phillips goes by DJ L BooG. “Being an artist and cooking are both a part of my artistry,” Freeman says. Waffle Cafe Detroit is at 18685 Livernois Avenue and is currently open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Sunday brunch service is coming soon." - Amber Ogden

Google
Great staff! Cameron gave the best intro of the entire menu. He was very kind and patient as the entire staff was! I was able to make my decision to get the waffle flight🧇🧇🧇, which included the Loaded Baked Potato/ Maple Bacon🥓 /Buffalo chicken. Some of this didn't look eatable, but I was proved wrong once I tried my chosen ones! My ultimate favorite of my flight was the Buffalo Chicken, pickles n' all! My son had the birthday cake and he said it was the best ever! There are so many options, even if you didn't want a waffle, there are options for you!

I brought my niece to Waffle Cafe Detroit to celebrate her 13th birthday. I love the simplicity and welcoming decor. Ordering was easy using a kiosk to place our order and pay. The creativity of the menu was unique. The music playing was great. We enjoyed our meal. Definitely will be back!

Google
The customer service was excellent! I really wanted to try a waffle flight, but they are temporarily unavailable, so I went with the chicken bacon ranch waffle and the strawberry cheesecake waffle with a watermelon lemonade to drink. My friend got the maple Bacon and the fruity pebbles waffles with a regular lemonade. Everything was delicious, and the portions are generous! Next time I'm in Detroit, I'll definitely be coming back to try their other flavors!

Google
It is such a great place to keep back and relax with a plate of sweet or savory waffles. They even have wraps that are made with the waffle batter and ice cream in waffle cones! I attended the soft opening and grand opening. Upon entry, you can place your order at a kiosk...very easy breezy. The staff is super friendly and very welcoming. They really breakdown the menu for you if you have any questions. If you are dining in, you can sit at a low or high top. This will definitely be one of my go-to spots I frequent often.

Google
The food here is amazing and they have a very and welcoming friendly staff ! I had the Very Berry Waffles and an order of Catfish Bites. The Catfish Bites were seasoned to perfection and they were so good that I had to go back the next day for more. This is a very nice place to eat the food is great and they were very friendly and welcoming.

Google
My Ceasar salad with garlic aoli waffle was great. However, my boyfriend got the French toast waffle and it was cold. We waited an hour for the food so he was disappointed. The drinks were extra sweet, so keep that in mind when ordering. Not too bad though. The service was great.

Left the Sabres vs. Red Wings game. Searched Google for Black owned restaurants nearby. BOOM! This was the first one with good ratings for me to say, "I could do with some breakfast right about now." ALWAYS order the Waffles 'n Flight. You will not regret it.

Google
Absolutely fantastic. I recently visited Waffle Cafe in Detroit, and I absolutely loved it! The waffles are theeee best I have ever had, and the service was outstanding. The strawberry cheesecake is outstanding. The lavender lemonade is insanely delicious. I Highly recommend Waffle Cafe for anyone looking for a great waffles and wifi.

Yelp
So this is a new restaurant in the avenue of fashion area (not brand new but newer). I went in on a Sunday for brunch and you MUST have a reservation (which we did). They will turn you away. Quaint small space, nicely decorated and clean. We arrive for our 11am reservation with an extra person and they nicely accommodated us. Space is at premium. They have mostly 2 seater round tables. Wasn't aware of that prior but now we know. We all knew what we wanted before arriving so orders were placed at 11:10. Drinks were brought out and our server was very friendly. My entree was the avocado wrap made with a very thin waffle. At 11:45 i'm told there is no avocado for my wrap. We are the only table in here, they just opened up, why did it take 35 minutes to discover this and make me aware?? I understand things being made fresh to order but there is NO ONE ELSE HERE. I opted to take the wrap anyway and just add bacon to it. Very glad i did. It was outstanding. The raspberry jam hit perfectly with the bacon addition. This is not a huge portion and that was perfect for me as i was going to the gym after leaving this place. My two friends both had the shrimp and grits and they really enjoyed it. My friends food arrived before mine. You can see from the picture there is nothing miraculous going on with this wrap to make it take so long to create, plate and serve. I love the quaint space, enjoyed the food and our server was great. I love in the neighborhood and wanted a new breakfast spot to walk to. The speed of service was my only let down and it's a huge let down.

Yelp
This adorable cafe is no longer open. I'm not sure if it's because the building is for sale by the owner OR if the current business is failing. I will say this. The proprietors of this business were excellent in regard to marketing. The business was filling seats for a while. We were extremely excited for this restaurant.

Yelp
This place is not big at all, there are about 12 various table set ups, of which 4 were occupied when I entered. This was around 11:00 am on a Wednesday. They are closed Mondays. Very cute and clean with an amazing old school r&b playlist going. My order was taken promptly. I opted for the sweet waffle flight, with my choices being caramel pecan, strawberry cheesecake and banana pudding waffles. To me the flights are the best deal because you can try a variety of their options. I plan to come back and try the savory flight. I was going to get a cafe mocha to drink but was informed that they only have coffee so then I asked for a bottles of water. They were out so I got a cup of tap water. Once my order was placed, the wait began ! I was told my order would take 35-45 minutes, luckily I had read other reviews and knew to expect this. This is because everything is made fresh to order but I can't imagine how long it takes when the place is really packed . Got my food about 45 minutes later. Highly recommend coming early because around 12 the place got PACKED! I thought the banana pudding waffle would be my favorite but it ended up being the strawberry cheesecake, followed by the candied pecan. The banana pudding was good but a little too sweet for me, it just tasted like sugar. The strawberry cheesecake was sweet but the cheesecake gave it a little tang that was a perfect complement. The candied pecan was also very sweet but the pecans helped cut through some of of the sweetness.

Yelp
I enjoyed breakfast at the Waffle Cafe. The restaurant was very clean and had a good bright vibe. The staff was nice and helpful. We ordered some waffles and catfish but they ran out of the catfish so we tried the chicken. The waffles are different and taste good. They did close earlier than there regular hours so I would call before going.

Yelp
The restaurant is set up cute. When you walk in they have a couple high chairs and tables, a coffee table with couches and lounge chairs surrounding and a lot of two person tables against the wall. Kim was super helpful she explained the menu to us and the taste of everything, upcoming events etc. she even explained that the salad comes in waffle bowls and explained what's to come in the future, with more waffles. I ordered the waffle n flight with the maple bacon waffle, loaded baked potato , and banana pudding, with a watermelon lemonade. The maple bacon waffle was pretty good, I think I taste a hint of cherry somewhere in there. The loaded baked potato waffle was my favorite. The mash potatoes are so good you can eat it by themselves, and the banana pudding waffle was SUPER sweet. They put a lot of pudding on top with whipped cream drizzle cookies and like a banana slice. Lastly the watermelon lemonade was so juicy it taste just like a watermelon and it comes with watermelon bits. My friend tried the lavender lemonade and it taste like a lavender with the end sweetness of the lemonade.

Yelp
Be prepared to wait awhile for your food. This was expected as everything is made fresh to order, and there is a sign explaining this. However, my order was ready far before my friend's order, even though we placed our orders at the same time. I was almost done eating by the time she received her order. The staff was absolutely wonderful - friendly and personable. I ordered the Waffle 'N Flight and while the toppings were awesome, the waffle itself was mediocre. Tough to cut with a plastic fork and a bit chewy. Very Berry was the best. I'd like to go back to try the Salad Bowls.

Yelp
I was very disappointed because I have read really good reviews for this business but I was there on April 10th about 10:30am. My daughter and I waited about 15 minutes and nobody ever came to take our order. We ring the bell on the counter and was told I'll be with you in a minute. Waited five more minutes and left. Poor customer service this day.
google avatar

Carolyn E.

Yelp
So glad we stopped in - the owner is such a nice guy and the food was delicious! It takes about 15 minutes, as everything is made fresh, but it was worth the wait. We had the chicken bacon ranch waffle and the berries and cream waffle - both were really delicious, though the ranch on the chicken waffle was a little weird - I think I'd get that on the side and get syrup. The chicken tasted so good - it has this really nice smoky flavor. Savory bacon, perfectly cooked waffle, delicious. I'd for sure return.

Yelp
The first time I went, I was with a 1 year old and they did not have high chairs or booster seats so I left. I returned the following weekend. There was only 1 table seated and we were informed there would be an hour and thirty minute wait for waffles. I was extremely disappointed and left AGAIN. That aside, the customer service and lemonade were great.

Yelp
This place has everything I've ever wanted in a waffle setting. The staff was so welcoming and service was faster than I expected on the grand opening. The ambiance was cozy and the place has wifi to boot! Straight to the point: Everything was delicious and I'll have to fight myself not to come here every day. I got the waffle flight with the banana pudding, buffalo chicken, and the strawberry cheesecake waffles. I got the watermelon and lavender bliss lemonade. I got the rainbow sherbet waffle ice cream cone. Lastly, I got the catfish bites and the chicken bites. Each one of these was simply amazing. I think my favorite is the strawberry cheesecake one though. The flight in total provided 6 waffle quarters with 2 for each flavor. The sweet waffles were not overly sweet and the flavors were very distinct. The buffalo chicken waffle was magnificent. I didn't know how pickles would work with waffles, but the combo was perfect. The catfish and chicken bites were perfectly seasoned. In addition I had the lavender bliss and watermelon lemonade. The lavender one was my favorite as it had real lavender in it. Lastly, the ice cream was the perfect ending to my meal. I will definitely be back! Extra credit: everything came in carry out containers so I didn't have to go back up and ask for some!

Yelp
Waffle cafe is amazingly good. It's very rich but still so yummy. The food review (when they have it) is 5 star. However, I am a little disappointed with the customer service which is always a hit or miss. We've been here several times and they are out of items often. Today, I attempted to order catfish nuggets and the guy at the register told me they didn't have time to cut them up. So when I told him I had the time to wait for them be cut up, he looked disappointed that I had the time to wait. Then I asked for the "the flight" and he proceeded to tell me he didn't have the staffing to make the flight so I left. However, this isn't a first time having issue with this establishment. Before, they hadn't cleaned the fryer to make the catfish. Before, the wait was for over an hour. I think they're missing consistency with staffing which is affecting the customers and ultimately their money.

Yelp
Let me start by saying- I know this place is new and will have issues. That said I was kind of disappointed. I love waffles. I wanted to love this place. I got a chicken waffle sandwich and the waffle was very soft. My wrap just kind of fell apart. There was very little chicken on it and didn't seem like a great value. Won't do that again. So I think my problem with everything was the waffles were soggy and really soft. I know personal preference. Just a plain Belgium waffle is $8. The loaded potato waffles were ok. It seemed to be commercial mashed.. Nacho cheese. Nothing spectacular!! I expected a signature waffle batter. I expected something so great and I walked away think meh. Glad I tried it.. but too many amazing places in this fashion district. Oh- the place is small.. just a few tables along the side. It's cozy as they have a few larger couches up front. Good for yourself and one person. Also not very private or intimate. Not quite quick either. Good to try. But meh.

Yelp
I walked in service was in the back, got looked at 2/3x before being ACKNOWLEDGED then told the young man that it was my 1st time here and he looked at me like I was crazy

Yelp
Today, my love of waffles took me to Waffle Cafe Detroit. First of all, there was a parking lot, which is a blessing in the area. I walked in and the vibe was fantastic!! Along with traditional seating, there were couches. It was perfect for a group or just some place to chill while enjoying the food and music or a book. The service was great. Kam walked us through the menu. There was a lot to choose from and we were told that there would be a lot more. We ordered the maple bacon waffles, the chicken bacon ranch wrap, the catfish bites and lavender lemonade. The wrap for the sandwich was actually a softer version of a waffle cone. It was really nice and had a slight sweetness. The waffles were covered with an ample amount of bacon pieces and real maple syrup. The catfish bites were ridiculously good! Even my mother, who doesn't like catfish, loved them. As for the lavender lemonade, I will be having it each and every time I return!

Kristin L.

Yelp
Fast service. Original menu. Good tasty food. Hot coffee that was fresh. Lots of take out orders but cute enough for a sit down breakfast (ambiance).

Yelp
I waited 45 minutes for a mediocre waffle... there are about five other people in the restaurant four women working, I'm not quite sure about what's going on. I wish them all the best, but definitely not the place for me.

Crissy B.

Yelp
First time impression is EVERYTHING, this establishment is supposed to be open at 9:00. They have their employee standing outside in this heat awaiting someone to get here and open the door. I doubt if I ever come back to try this place. Just awful !
google avatar

Nikki B.

Yelp
Came to the grand opening. Food was great. The staff was so sweet and really nice. I'm excited to drop in when I get a little hankering for some waffles. If you're in the area, stop by and grab some grub.

Yelp
Food is one of my Love Languages. Today I went to the Waffle Cafe Detroit and when I say 10 outta 10 I mean 10 outta 10. The vibe was vibin the Lavender Lemonade (my Favorite)was so smooth and it had real Lavender in it. I did the Waffle Flight...Maple bacon (bacon was crispy), Chicken bacon ranch (the ranch was actually pretty tasty on a waffle the chicken was seasoned well) and the French Toast Waffle (sweet but not too much, just the right amount). The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. Very timely I didn't have to wait long for my food Black owned business,Go check them out!!

Reggie Reg ..

Yelp
This was my first time at this establishment and I can honestly say that I was pleased. I ordered the Chicken beacon ranch wrap. I don't know how they made a waffle that flat and soft but it was delicious. The chicken was hot, the ranch wasn't watered down and the beacon had a nice crunch. I was surprised to see the Co-Owner at the register taking orders but I'm glad she did. Kim was very professional, polite and personable. She threw me for a loop when she came back from the kitchen and called me by my first name to see if my order was take-out or dine-in . I thought it was one of my aunts (family member) calling me . The decor and ambiance is giving relaxation, comfort and sophisticated all at the same time. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I'm looking forward to the upcoming new SUNDAY BRUNCH starting soon.

Yelp
Lots of sweet and savory waffle choices and the staff are chill about kids. Lemonade is a must try. Usually have some tunes playing from the DJ table up front.

Yelp
The food was great no complaints at all, the customer service was horrible! Livernois location

Yelp

Yelp
At the waffle cafe there were couches to eat on. The waffles were delicious. I ordered the flight which is 3 flavors in 1. I got very berry, birthday cake, and mint chocolate chip. I would eat here again if we were in the area or when I was old enough to drive.

Yelp
The waffles where absolutely delicious, their selection to choose from was wide and I enjoyed what was recommended to us. The staff was ver kind and I'm looking forward to coming back with more of my friend's to swing by soon. Highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
The food, service and staff are awesome. This is a wonderful place to get away take a break. A place to relax recharge and enjoy.

Charlotte L.

Yelp
Staff was friendly. Service was quick. Food was just ok. I'm reluctant to to be too harsh as I didn't get a true waffle dish. I ordered the chicken bacon ranch waffle wrap. The taste was fine but the waffle was a bit soggy. I wouldn't order it again. I might try a breakfast dish or an ice cream dish and update my review as the wrap doesn't feel like a true reflection of their ability.
