Waffle House Employees Are Working More for Less Pay During COVID-19 | Eater

"At this Auburn unit sales collapsed from roughly $1,500–$2,000 per shift to about $100 before the location closed, and server tips fell dramatically (one employee reported earning about $5–$6 per shift versus a $41 tip on an early March shift); hourly pay for servers remained at the low federal tipped minimum of $2.13. After the closure the employee found shifts at another nearby unit but expressed strong safety concerns about reopening dine-in service and about the financial instability caused by the downturn." - Jenny G. Staff was very friendly, more staff than you'd normally see at a waffle House they still were great and getting training that they needed

Man oh man, I knew better but I got tricked by another location near by that had great fresh food a few days prior as I was traveling the same route... truck driver problems. So I was motivated for waffle house again. But I was reminded to never get too comfortable. I wanted to try the same location as before, but missed my exit so I got off the highway at the very next exit...yep there's one on every exit seems like. I arrived to an empty parking lot. Ghost town inside. Three employees inside goofing off like the three stooges. I was already nervous. I went inside and placed my order and also requested fresh toast with my order. Now let me say before they get to lying, some locations do have pre-made toast, and it be burnt. I'm not sure if that's something that they do to keep busy when the place is empty. But adding old cold toast to fresh scrambled eggs and hash is so trifling! So here I am not knowing what this location does...so I asked for fresh toast. Cashier tries to make a joke out of it when calling the order out to the cook. Then they all try to add their little 2 cents. I didn't care because I said what I said! But I see how all those waffle house fights be popping up on Instagram. Anyway, I had more important things to worry about than their slick comments. I sat and waited... suddenly all tree 🌲🌲🌲of them (iykyk)are hoovering over the stove where the cook is finishing up my food, blocking my view. Then suddenly the cashier pops out and starts to bag my order. It felt hot enough to burn my hand, so I knew it was freshly made enough. I grab my food and headed one exit down to bucees for fuel. I took a lil break and what do you know...burnt toast that had been scraped. I mean, what the heck! Waffle houses must not require anybody anywhere to know how to make toast! I will admit my other items were fresh but again... freshly made burnt toast is more trifling than the pre-made burnt! Always check your food...they don't even know how to make toast!

Yelp
Incredible Service & Hospitality! I cannot say enough great things about Waffle House #1035 on South College Street (Hwy 29 near I-85) in Auburn, AL! Our group of 22 hungry teenagers showed up out of the blue, and the team handled it like absolute pros. Dez, Elijah, and Eden went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of, keeping the energy high, the service fast, and the food coming out hot and fresh. Despite the unexpected rush, they remained friendly, organized, and efficient, making sure every single one of us had exactly what we needed. The food was delicious (as always), but the outstanding hospitality made this visit truly special. If you're looking for a great meal with even better service, this is the Waffle House to visit. Huge thanks again to Dez, Elijah, and Eden for making our experience so memorable! 10/10 recommend! Thank you again Dez, Elijah, and Eden! (Y'all deserve a bonus, paid vacation, certificate or somethin!!!) Go Tigers !!!! Yours Truly, "Coach"

Yelp
I have came to this location a couple times and the customer service was amazing. It takes them less than 15 minutes to prepare my order. The food is always fresh and hot. The staff is friendly and polite. I have no complaints here!!

Yelp
This review is sans food because we didn't get to eat. It was busy which is fine. But we saw a table in the corner and grabbed it. It wasn't wiped off so we just wiped it off with a napkin, again no problem. We sit there for about 5 minutes and then the guy comes over and says "this table isn't ready yet. Could you stand over there?" Tand then he walks over to his cell phone and gets on it behind the counter. My questions are: 1. What more do you have to do to prep this Waffle House booth for dining? 2. Why do we have to wait if you're only busy on your phone? We got up and promptly left. We won't be coming back. Should've checked the reviews before because this location apparently is just that way.

Chelsea Y.

Yelp
Great service & friendly staff. Multiple greetings when we came in. Good food. Quick too. I would recommend

Paul B.

Yelp
Good luck getting service here. Showed up and the sign on the door claims it's 24 hours. 6 employees out in the parking lot hanging out smoking cigarettes and one person inside to tell us "sorry we are closed to clean up". Funny last I checked Waffle House is supposed to be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. I understand the time before when we came in and they were short staffed but there was no shortage of staff. Just a bunch of lazy people that don't want to work. Don't worry we won't be back.

Garrett W.

Yelp
Tried to walk in to eat at 10:00pm. Employees were smoking weed in the parking lot and stated that they "were closed for the next 30mins" and rolled back up the window. Their belongings were inside and lights to the restraunt was open, but they were too busy getting high on the clock.....

Yelp
Where should I start? It's been nearly 3yrs since I've gotten my hand on a Waffle House since moving outside of the states it's offered in. For the first time in 3 yrs, I come to this location to grab some all star to go to continue our road trip. At first, we were greeted the normal "eat in or to go"? Our order was to go. A simple all star order with eggs over easy, bacon and double hash smothered and peppered. Not only did I watch them make our order, I was extremely disappointed, as I've been looking forward to this food reunion. Let's start off with the hash. Double hash smothered and peppered. I watched the cook heat up the hash and at the end threw 1 room temp slice of cheese on top and into the to go container. Next came my over easy eggs into the box (thinking at least my eggs are perfect since I got shorted on the smothered). Alas the waffle that was made and sitting there in the to go container, getting soft from the steam, waiting for someone to just throw the plate of bacon that's been sitting on a plate on the edge of the grill since I walked in. While everyone is chatting and walking past the order that's been done (minus the room temp bacon) I'm waiting patiently, watching everyone do nothing. Bread pops out of the toaster and is buttered and thrown in, then the bacon. Then a guy flipped my waffle over, because we both know my waffle is no longer at Waffle House standards and throws in the butter and syrup. I paid for my order with what seemed to be a welcoming person, turned sour. Grabbed our order and ran to the car. While the bf started hitting the road again, I open the order to be no longer steamy hot, but warmed with broken eggs, smothered hash that didn't melt fully and a waffle that was soggy and like warm. I'm really disappointed with this location and service. I hope you do better... even if it is a Waffle House, have a small standard. The location I would go to in Atlanta has much better hospitality than you. Shameful. Come disappointed so you're not let down at the end.

Yelp
Grungier, dirtier, and faster than Denny's. The prices here are so cheap, it's a wonder how much profit is being made. Their dollar menu is my territory and I liked that you can customize a single order. I ordered 1 buttermilk waffle without all the excess sides and my only wish was that the waffle would be hotter. The waffles they make are really soft. The service was awful but they were really fast in bringing the food with you so don't have to wait long to get some good stuff.

Yelp
Hands down the worst ran WH ever , and they couldn't care less!!, 11 workers! Not one of our orders was right plus cold. And again they didn't even care!!

Yelp
Syn; "Awful waffle" You a freedom loving American that embraces the simple things in life? Do you often dream of a place you can have drunken breakfast 24/7 365? This culinary mona Lisa will leave you both satisfied and sobered by the time you stumble out of the door. Best of all you can still chief down a pack of reds and bring your own beer. That beer thing was depending on location of coarse, don't try that shit in central Alabama. They are still dry out there. You could be served by the finest culinary Masters of our time. The lovely waitresses offer delightful service with a smile. They don't even complain when I always insist on using it to go cup. Best of all they are literally in every city in the southeast maybe two or three of them per. Just hot wire cheap motels or dive bars and you will stumble onto one of these gems. On the interior, The floor is usually tiled with what looked to be a thick marble salvaged from ancient Mesopotamia. The barstools are fixed to the floor and are draped with what I assume is the hide of a rare South Rhodesian rhino. The bar is crafted by a mid century wood working technique. There is a jukebox that is usually out of order, but will still take your money. If it is working, it offers the final selection of country music from the 90s that you have ever dreamed for. There are pictures going across the top of the ceiling of simpler times at earlier establishments. They have two restrooms men's and women's, as they should. Everything is farm to table. There is even vegan friendly food there, it's outside in the beautiful parking lot flower beds. If there's one thing you should never order at waffle house it is a salad. Not only is it a sin, its downright ignorant. Go look at the refrigerator the door is see through your salad is in there prepared already. Please go to your local liquor Establishment and purchase your preferred beverage immediately, go home, down it, and Uber/drunkenly stumble to this amazing dining experience of a lifetime.

Yelp
Scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced - that's the way I like mine... (if I am especially hung over I might even go topped - with Bert's Chili of course!) A southern institution that I miss in California. Luckily I go out drinking about every night when I am back home in Auburn, and I've been to the WH twice in three days - doh!

Yelp
Service was impeccable. Food was scrumptious. Speed was faster than speedy Gonzalez. Best fucking food ever. 5/7 a perfect score.

Yelp
Steak tasted like cow. The tomatoes were almost rotten. They did replace them. The whole steak and eggs was barely tolerable. If I hadn't been hungry I would not have eaten it. The coffee was like mud. The waitress was cheerful and I realize it wasn't her fault. I hope she can find a better place to work.

Yelp
No stars if i could. Took forever to get drinks. Food was cold and not correct. Waitress was clueless and so was the manager. I have never had a bad experience at a waffle house until tonight. Dont waste your time here or your money. The people that work here are stupid.

Tom B.

Yelp
I absolutely love Waffle House. I haven't even gotten my food yet and I know that it's going to be delicious. Our waitress is just sassy enough to make the experience authentic. I got the "two egg breakfast" and ordered scrambled eggs, and then changed my mind and decided I wanted over medium, and she gave me the perfect amount of side eye as she scratched out my order. If you're looking for breakfast food between the hours of 11 PM - 4 AM, this is the place to be. 2 thumbs up.

Braden D.

Yelp
Was told 15 minute wait, took an hour and 20 minutes to even get a seat. Ended up having to leave and get a to go order. Awful place. Be honest about wait times

Corrie D.

Yelp
I was appalled by the stupidity and rudeness of the people working there. I gave coupons to use and after I was charged and had given my coupons I noticed my total did not include the coupons and when asking the girl at the front I told it would be "too much a hassle" to fix. I tried to ask about the price before, but was passively ignored, then to be told it was a hassle to return my money that they over charged makes me sick to think they could hold a job.

Yelp
Ate here around midnight just after pulling into Auburn from a long trip from Utah. It seems comparable to a Denny's as far as prices and what they offer, just in a more ghetto and dirty environment. The food was good, I ordered a waffle, the grits/egg/sausage dish and my wife ordered some sort of bacon and cheese sandwich. We received our food quickly, and no complaints with the food or service. My advice would be to not come here alone, especially as a girl, as the crowd seemed really shady and the place was pretty dingy and dark outside.

Yelp
Waited over 10 minutes for a booth to be cleaned. There were three empty/dirty booths and a for workers standing around despite the fact that it was quite busy. You'd think they would want to turn the tables around quickly. Waitress didn't take our drink order first. Waited about 10-15 minutes to have our order and drink order taken. Waitress walked away before I could complete my order. The food itself was the same as any other Waffle House. Tastes good and super greasy. There seemed to be less hash browns than we usually get at our WH at home. Tip for moms: no changing station to be found.

Yelp
We were in Auburn and looking for a quick breakfast so stopped at the Waffle House. As we entered we were told to sit where we liked, so grabbed a booth and our server arrived immediately. There were 2 people sitting at the counter and 3 booths occupied so the place was basically empty. We ordered pancakes and scrambled eggs-hash browns--sausage & toast. The pancake arrived within a few minutes. Eight minutes later the eggs arrived. The eggs were cold & over cooked to the point they were like rubber, sausage was over cooked also and hard, hash browns were cooked well and tasted great but the toast was soft and was so cold that the butter did not melt. Only think I can think that happened was that after we ordered several people sat at the bar who knew the cook. The cook was more interested in talking with her friends than paying attention to preparing my order. The results our orders were delivered far apart, the food was cold and poorly cooked. BTW the pancake was warm and good. Won't be going back.

Valerie W.

Yelp
This Waffle House was so dirty, I have never ever in my life seen such a nasty restaurant floors dirty tables not clean, but my husband said let's get take out and we can watch the cook, cook our food, the food was delicious but the waitress was so ghetto...cook was the reason I gave it a two star

Yelp
This is easily the best Waffle House I've ever eaten in. The order was right, good service, clean bathrooms, and a general lack of passed out drunkards. It's still a Waffle House, so your socks will stay firmly on your feet when the food arrives. Apparently, this one is owned and watched over by Auburn alumni, and comes as an added benefit to staying the night at the adjacent Econolodge. Truly a marvel amongst Waffle Houses!
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Worst Waffle House ever. Manager and the cook use their hands to make the food with out gloves. Plus they don't wash their hands. I ordered pork chop dinner and the pork chop came out of the bucket. Very nasty I didn't eat and pay for the food and left. I sat in the counter so I was able to see it all. Just terrible.
google avatar

Sandra H.

Yelp
8 seats, 2 booths empty when we walked in. 10 workers & 1 security man working the door. Waited a while. Workers super nice to us Alabama fans. Auburn beat Georgia tonight & it was very a busy & happy place. Everything running smoothly with good service. Clean. Our daughter is moving away from Auburn this weekend, but if we ever return, we will eat here again.

Nancy G.

Yelp
Food was good but took a long time. It is hard to screw up eggs, bacon and a sandwich. 12 people working and no one could be bothered to pick up the shoe someone left outside the door, the napkins/trash on the floor or the smushed dead baby mouse on the sidewalk!

Mary M.

Yelp
Sat down for 20 minutes. Only one person acknowledged our group and we still were not served. Terrible service!
google avatar

Pete L.

Yelp
This waffle house is particularly exceptional. It's one of the most high volume waffle houses in the south. During the school year you can pretty much count on waiting for a table here from about 2:00 am till about 3:00pm on weekends. So, if you don't want to be surounded by a high density of hung over/ still drunk college kids don't go. Otherwise, it's awesome

Andrew B.

Yelp
If the head football coach loves going over there, why can't you? Great service consistently whenever I've gone there. Really clean. Cold, but so are all of them. It's the best of the local WH chains throughout the area.

Sheralyn B.

Yelp
i went to waffle house on a saturday the waitress named summer was very rude coughed alll over my food and today is monday and im sick with a cold she burned my waffle and just made me so mad i would never want to come back
