Where to Eat and Drink in Bridgeport | Eater Chicago

"Bridgeport briefly lost a pillar of the community when this longstanding bakery closed its doors late last year. Fortunately, a new owner quickly emerged and brought back everyone’s favorite assortment of pastries. Indulge in paczki, bacon buns, maple-bacon doughnuts, and other new additions." - Jeffy Mai

Google
Very friendly and welcoming. Best bakery by far! Coffee is pretty delicious also! Your in for a treat. I took my younger one in to pick out pan he would like to try and we had a sampling spread. Let me tell you my child knows where to go for his favorites. Keep up the amazing work!

Good prices. Good bread. With Pilsen and surrounding areas rising costs, this business keeps it real. I appreciate them a lot. Also their tres leches slices are really good.

Google
Ordered a cake for my mother in law customized with her picture and Tres leches with Mexican flowers. It turned out beautiful! Tasted delicious definitely recommend this place very friendly and accommodating. Tbe only thing I didn't like was the written message could have been better but overall presentation and taste was amazing!

The Mexican style bread is delicious. The prices are reasonable and the customer service is very good.

Purchased buttercream yellow cake for Birthday in February. Fondant icing cracked and dry. The cake was the yellowish cake I'd ever seen. It was supposed to have strawberry and banana filling. Fact it was an old cake! So disappointing. It fell apart when it was sliced.

We've been long time customers and last night my parents ordered a chocolate marbled cake with strawberry filling. When we finally cut the cake we realized it was Tres Leches! HUGEEE DISSAPOINTMENT!! (But since it was after bakery hrs we obviously couldn't return it, & we also couldn't keep our guest waiting). Today I called and I asked for a refund but they only said 🙃 we'd get "store credit". Do yourself a favor and stay away from this bakery when it comes to your cake needs.

Google
The only bakery my dad likes in Chicago. My great grandpa was a baker in back in his day so my dad is extremely picky about where we go. This has been the only place that he will go to and be happy with everything he gets. I completely agree lol 🙂.

Yelp
This place is disgusting!! There are flies EVERYWHERE. Flies in the front area, flies in the cake area, flies stuck in the frosting of the donuts. The moment you walk in you're greeted with an intense wave of heat and humidity, the trays and tongs you use to serve the pastries are covered in crusty frosting and other stains from previous customers. How do people eat from here?? Do you just close your eyes when you serve yourself/eat??? I purchased a single cookie because I had already grabbed it but I threw it out as soon as I left. How is this place even still in business?

Yelp
The attention to detail here is incredible. Staff wore gloves, cleaned the counters regularly, and handled food with care. I ordered a lemon meringue pie and it looked as good as it tasted fluffy topping, tart filling, perfect crust. The box was sturdy and clean. I feel safe eating here, and the flavors are worth every bite.

Yelp
This bakery has some of the best customer service I've ever seen. The staff checked in politely without hovering, and everything ran smoothly. I noticed the floors and tables were wiped regularly. I had their eclair, and it was filled generously with creamy custard and topped with rich chocolate. The balance of sweetness was just right. Five stars for taste, service, and cleanliness.

Yelp
Looked at options and walked out. It's a "panderia" with limited number of danish pastries (almost all sweet cheese) and several chocolate long johns that had frosting that looked like it would crack if you looked at it too long. Wish I had read Yelp instead of the Google write up.

Yelp
Establishment was clean. Staff was friendly. Google describes it as a European and Mexican bakery but I only saw Mexican pastries. There was a huge selection of desserts. Price was very reasonable.

Yelp
My neighborhood bakery.I come in fairly often to buy bolillos and teleras to make tortas at home. And their breads are always fresh and delicious.I can buy them and still keep them at home for a couple of days and they will still be nice and soft.I also like their Mexican sweet breads.I live nearby and shop here often and so far haven't had any issues.

Yelp
My husband was recommended this bakery by our preschooler's friend's family. They did an amazing job making the below birthday cake for me in 2 days. This tres leches cake is be most delicious I've ever tried. I also totally cracking up that the Polish flag and white eagle are intricately decorating a traditionally Mexican cake . We will absolutely come back here for all treats and occasions!
google avatar

Yelp
I only come for the bolillo and teleras everything else is not good. I find another bakery that makes as good bolillo I wouldn't come and waste my money here since the customer service is so rude. You walk in and no one ever greets you, not even checking out. They treat me better at any grocery store compared to this small owned family business.

Yelp
I've lived in Chicago my entire life and I've always had my spot for cake.. but that's changed. This past weekend my cousin had his wedding cake made here and let me tell you, the whipped cream frosting was to die for! I'm definitely going to stop in soon!

Yelp
I grew up in Pilsen and this was pretty much the only bakery in the neighborhood that wasn't mexican. No, I'm not knocking mexican bakeries...love 'em...I'm half mexican but it was just nice to be able to have a bakery that we could go to when we weren't craving pan dulce or churros. Dern, now I'm craving churros! Okay...back to Wagner's. Wagner's has the BEST cheesecake on the face of this earth. I'm not a big cheesecake lover and my brother and probably some other people will tell you that the cheesecake there sucks but I love it. Could take a bath in their cheesecake and yep probably wouldn't mind having a few cheesecakes from Wagner's buried with me when I die. It's a different consistency/texture from the run of the mill cheesecake and I believe it is made with ricotta cheese instead of cream cheese. It's fluffy, spongey and has chocolate cake crumbles all over the top of it. My waistline is very grateful that I moved out of the neighborhood because I could pretty much polish off one of their cheesecakes in one sitting if given the chance. Wagner's also sells different types of cakes, pies, cookies, muffins, tarts, eclairs and of course takes specialty orders.

Yelp
Last year my daughter surprised me with the best Paczki I've ever had! Wagner's is now Mexican owned but they impressed me with these traditional Polish treats. Go early. They'll be gone quick.

Yelp
Loved the conchas and Bollios here! Bought my fiancé a jalapeño , cream cheese, and ham bread too. Everything is always delicious and tastes way better than the bakery by 18th and Paulina ( the one by the 18th pink line) the older Mexican lady is so sweet and nice. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is cuz sometimes the working here are rude but other than that everything is delicious and fresh! Thank you to the older lady who was friendly today. My daughter loves to come here for the pink conchas :) we will be back all the time

Yelp
I called the bakery early in the morning to know when the roscas were going to be ready and they confirmed by 4pm. I arrive just before 4 from a 40 min drive because I live out west. They informed that they will not be ready but until 5, and I have my kids on the car....or course I can't be there one hour waiting on them...they never apologized or said anything. The roscas looked awful. I ended up going to Nuevo León bakery and got a fresh one. Small roscas in Nuevo León are $34ish compared to Wagners $20ish...

Yelp
Ordered a birthday cake from this bakery this weekend. We had a lot left over and I bought a piece home. Yesterday I decided to have a piece and I am sad to report that there was a long hair in the frosting. I was just grateful that it happened to me the day after not the day off the birthday celebration. I called and spoke to the owners brother he said his name is Gabriel. I wanted to bring this to their attention and his reply was "this could happen anywhere including your home". I feel like this is totally unacceptable. I was not calling for a refund but more of a courtesy to let them know what was going on in their kitchen. I was amazed that he didn't even offer an apology and seemed pretty much unconcerned about the whole issue. I'm sure he didn't even think it was an issue just another day at the bakery. He said his brother Luis is the owner and out of town till this Friday. I asked him to have him give me a call since he didn't seem to mind that there was hair in one of their cakes. Not holding my breath for a call back . I am very disgusted and disappointed about the whole experience. I have to point out that I accidentally ordered from them my plan was to order from Weber but realized it too late. I guarantee you that I nor anyone in my family will order from that Bakery over again.

Yelp
The flan was good. I would say their customer service is off putting. They just don't seem very friendly.

Yelp
staff is always so kind, prepared and orderly..i really like that in a local place i frequent/can easily walk to. Beyond that the food is g r e a t and prices are criminally low. I always get a cake donut and tried a pecan cake of some sort? Delicious, and I have enjoyed their more european pastries and cookies from time to time. Totally worth a stop if you're in the area, or able to take the train to damen pink line on a weekend morning..Go Wagner's!!(-:

Yelp
The best kolachkies Nice coffee cake. Staf is very freindly and helpful. I think the old bakers left behind the secret recipes to some of most delcious pastries. thanks.

Yelp
Terrible customer service, young girl in front was so annoyed everytime I asked a question. She literally rolled her eyes. Wont go back

Yelp
Wagner's is a pretty good bakery. I've been going there for years. Their pastries and cakes are worth trying.

Yelp
This is the only bakery I take my business to. They decorate the cakes beautifully and the cakes are always fresh. There isn't anything the cake decorator can't do.

Yelp
So I might have wandered into the Wagner's in a parallel universe, but this place is a panaderia with a misleading name. There were no Polish pastries, no kolaches - just pan dulce and other related Mexican pastries. I asked about the cheesecake another reviewer mentioned, but they had no such offerings.

Diamond T.

Yelp
Had a taste for some Mexican bread since I was in the area,,where I live there are no Mexicans bakeries , OMG I was so disappointed this bread was so old and peanut butter cookies was crumbling apart because it was so old. I don't even think they make the bread there they didn't really have a bakery like smell!! I will not recommended this bakery at all, there are other bakeries in the area .

Yelp
I thought this would be more of an american bakery, but they still do have pan dulce, bolillo, and telera. in addition, they do have some bakery staples, such as butter cookies, danish, muffins, and cakes to order. all in all, it's a nice bakery with a smaller selection than some of the other bakeries in the area, but i still think they do everything pretty well.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I wandered in to this local bakery and was greeted by heaven in bread form. I LOVE their upside down pecan cake thing and its less than a dollar. Any time I have visitors I take them here for morning pastries. They have a mix of mexican and american style pastries here and for the price I can get one of each. I recommend bringing cash but they do take cards.

Yelp
I haven't been disappointed yet with the baked goods here. I'm a big fan of anything filled with cheese. :)

Yelp
The best cookies I have ever had! The chocolate is tasty. The texture is light. The cookies are excellent! My favorite is filled with berry and dipped in chocolate. I'm going every week! Ok every other, but I can't make promises! I need to try the Rosca and Polish pastries.

Yelp
love this bakery!!! All the bread is always warm & fresh. I would definitely recommend coming here for break and personalized cakes!

Yelp
Since going to Wagner's for my rosca over 2 years ago, I have become a big fan. They have a great variety of mexican sweet breads. The bread is always soft and fresh no matter what time of day I go. We have tried almost every variety they offer and love them all. I haven't had their cookies or cakes, but they look good. They are always polite and attentive to their customers. It's also super cheap! Where most bakeries might charge 60-70 cents per bread, they sell it for like 45-50 cents per bread. It's not a "full service" bakery like El Nopal, but I'd rather pick my own bread anyway. I've been to a lot of bakeries in the Pilsen, Back of the Yards, even Bridgeport areas, and this is by far my favorite. I always go back to it despite it being well out of my way.
