Where To Eat & Drink During Mardi Gras 2024

"Most of the places to eat near the Westbank parade route are fast food restaurants and chains. The exception is Wag's, a spot where you’ll find a menu of New Orleans soul food classics like red beans, stuffed peppers, and gumbo that change daily. Sure, your friend’s mom might be cooking up huge batches of these traditional dishes during Carnival season, but maybe you’re temporarily banned from her house because last year, you reached in front of her to catch a Zulu Fire Truck Krewe Hot Nut T-shirt. While that sucks for you (and we can’t relate), you can get similar dishes here, all served in overstuffed styrofoam containers. They have plenty of seating, and you can always smell the simmering trinity of bell peppers, onion, and celery when you walk in." - megan braden perry

Google
Delicious!! We love trying local food and found this place while passing through. Everything we tried had amazing flavor but the crawfish fettuccine with grilled fish was our favorite! Definitely treat yourself and get a few sweet potatoe pies too💗

Google
Staff was very friendly! Neighborhood Restaurant food was delicious like home cook. We had the Bell Pepper Stuffed and Fried Fish Sweet Potato Pie. So Delicious ❤️❤️❤️

Google
Wags food just hits different! The food is always great and so is the punch! The shrimp&grits breakfast and the crawfish pasta be rolling! The vibes are always nice when entering this place.

Google
Maaaannnnnn, where do I start??!!! Wags has been the place to be and eat for so many years! I don't live in the city anymore but whenever we visit better believe we're eating here! The owner is amazing and always has the most pleasant demeanor and attitude. Highly recommend! Don't be alarmed by the neighborhood. You'll be ok, it's New Orleans. Lol.

Google
This food was VERY disappointing. The dirty rice tasted like celery and onion not to mention the rice was clean looking and had a weird seasoning on it. The red beans was watery af and had only a quarter piece of smoke sausage (cut the smoke sausage and then cut that piece into four pieces) not to mention the mystery item they called potato salad was unidentifiable. The ribs tasted like they had been cooked in smoke sausage water and then drowned in bbq sauce...and then put in the oven, the ribs were almost candied. The jiffy cornbread was the most decent thing on the plate and the ish was dry and stale. This was my first and very last time here. This food is just disgusting. No other words describe it..oh yeah they had like 40 flies everywhere. Y'all can have this.

Google
This food used to be really good and worth it. Idk what they changed but the quality and presentation of the food is not the same. This cabbage tasted burnt and over cooked. Yams are quite plain. The cabbage does not seem like it is fresh at all. Seems like it had been made and just reheated. The cornbread is mid. Everything is going down hill. I tried to give it another chance after noticing things are different a whole year ago. but I won’t be supporting this business anymore.

Google
Not enough food for what you’re paying for. Food was good but not your money worth .

Google
Was in town for the week & rode with my sis (pinky) who is from there. When we came i tried the gumbo cause I wasn't that hungry.. lets just say I was back 2 days later for some more.. i also tried the red beans & rice & fried shrimp the 2md time... it was soo good! But that cornbread baby .... makes you wanna slap your mama for not making it that way all these years 🤣 will definitely be back when I'm in town again!

Yelp
The food and service at this cool neighborhood restaurant is definitely worth it. The atmosphere and style of the restaurant is unique and the service is always excellent and friendly. The food is very delicious and taste like the food from my grandma's kitchen. This is the best soul food restaurant on the Westbank!!!!
google avatar

Zackia M.

Yelp
Seafood here is very good. I only eat seafood, but friends say the meat dishes are very good too. One big problem is I got some seafood gumbo that they said didn't contain meat, but I could clearly see sausage! Thank goodness I didn't eat any or I would have been very, very sick.

Yelp
Food was very bland and it wasn't worth the $30 I spent. Customer service was terrible she was very rude and didn't listen to anything I was ordering needles to say she had an AirPod in while taking the order. Ambience wasn't as friendly either.

S J.

Yelp
Great food and great prices! Nice vibe too. When they have mixed drinks, they're good also. Gumbo is my favorite thing on the menu.

Yelp
While camping at Bayou Segnette State Park we found this gem tucked into a nearby neighborhood. The food was delicious, seasoned to perfection, and the portions were generous. We had the meatloaf special and fried fish with greens, potato salad, and cornbread. The service is friendly and top notch. Our only regret is not ordering their gumbo! Next visit to the area we'll be stopping at Wag's again!
google avatar

Curtis S.

Yelp
The food is banging. Southern feel in the place with great hospitality. A small tucked away restaurant but most def a place to seek out if you are looking for a good meal (breakfast or lunch) that sticks. I would recommend wags on a lazy Saturday or Sunday for brunch.

Braxston R.

Yelp
Good food. I like to enjoy breakfast and lunch lasagna. I don't have any complaints from this restaurant the people are friendly and the atmosphere is quite unique.
google avatar

Jovan W.

Yelp
The man at the front counter talk too much .... I waited in line 30mins to pick up an order that I called in. Food was just sitting in the window getting cold
google avatar

Reginald B.

Yelp
Absolutely love Wags. They do 5 mains and 4 side combinations that you can mix and match. Great service and quality cuisine.
google avatar

Kimberly F.

Yelp
Very good gumbo. I appreciate being able to call in the order and stopping in to pick it up. I am not a usual consumer of gumbo. However, Wag's gumbo is the best I've ever tasted.

Roc W.

Yelp
The one of the realest dude I know in the restaurant business. I Love them. Good so gooood

Yelp
Beautiful, I love the cultural feeling among the decor. The food is excellent & the customer service is impeccable.

Yelp
This is the heart of the west bank! WEST WE GO! Not only is the food delicious and made with love, the aged and cultural conversation are priceless! Good food and imparted wisdom!!!

Yelp
I've tried wags plenty of times they're never a disappointment. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
A great hidden gem....best Soul Food on the West Bank....also fresh full of flavor..... I could eat here everyday.....

Yelp
This is a good go to spot for a quick down home meal. I tried their fried fish plate. It came with peas, bread, potato salad, and baked macaroni. My only gripe is that it wasnt "baked macaroni". It was more of a macaroni with cheese done over the stove. The fish was fried well. While i do hate peas, i was told by my mom that they were sweet and pretty tasty. Service was quick and cashier was very friendly. I liked the laid back vibe of the place as well. Will be making a return trip to check out some other things on the menu.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME! My sister recommended I pickup breakfast from here and I am happy she did! I had no trouble locating this business because of the distinctive art and location. Parking is a frenzy because there's people constantly going in and out to partake of this succulent greatness! The inside has lots of seating in case you want to dine in. I'm a to-go kinda guy because I'm always on the go. The staff members are soooooo friendly and helpful. They take your order by name and also assist if you had any menu questions. I ordered the shrimp & grits (my fave) and a grilled chicken and shrimp salad. The portions are veryyyyy large and filling. The wait time was not long at all. Within 6 minutes, I heard my name called and I was good to go. I devoured my meal so fast because it was sooo good! & tipping is optional but I definitely recommended tipping these wonderful people.

Roz M.

Yelp
It's a vibe with a great atmosphere, home cooked meals and service. Breakfast lunch and dinner!!!

Yelp
It was my first time at Wags, and it did not disappoint! I decided to try it based on the Yelp reviews, and it was so delicious. The counter service was quick, easy, and friendly. I got the daily plate togo with the stewed chicken, rice, baked mac, and peas (double instead of potato salad). The lady let me substitute extra peas for the potato salad without any issues. This girl can eat, and the daily plate stuffed me! It was only $8 and came out hot. I would definitely go again! Just something to know: park and drive carefully. Their parking lot backs up to the side street.
google avatar

Latasa M.

Yelp
Sorry no pictures! However please take my word the food was delicious. We ordered the shrimp stew, seafood gumbo and grilled shrimp with broccoli. I ordered online using yelp which was actually pretty easy. The place was really crowded not sure if that was due to Juneteenth or not since it was my first time there. The ladies at the front counter provided great customer service as well. The food was ready when I got there and there was no additional wait. I was also able to get a gallon of Yimalade while I was there. I definitely will be going back.

Yelp
I'm not really a fan of "home cooked" styled food unless it comes from my house but if I have to have it WAGS is it. I love that they keep the menu simple so you don't get overwhelmed. I grabbed a salad for lunch with coworkers the other day and it was decent. It wasn't horrible just not as "healthy" as the sale could have been. The toppings kind of lacked. Also I've had the red beans and fried fish plate that was a 7/10. The fish and cornbread were perfect but the beans didn't have much meat in them. Overall, WAGS is a good place to grab quick and hot lunch for a good price.

Yelp
We ordered from here on UberEats, and it took an hour although we paid for priority delivery. They forgot an entire order, and forgot to put cheese on the cold, hard grits that we paid extra for. We also found a hair at the bottom of the grits and when we tried to call the restaurant, they said that there was nothing they could do to resolve the issue. Terrible customer service, will never eat from here again.
google avatar

Traivon C.

Yelp
Food was great would definitely go back only issue was me standing for 20 minutes waiting for my food when it was done and bagged the whole time.

Chad B.

Yelp
We found this hidden gem as we were heading out of the big easy. So glad we did, I had the fish and wings with red beans and rice, and crawfish fettuccine, my wife had the smothered pork chop with sweet corn, whipped mustard potato salad, and Mac n cheese. Great food for an excellent price. I would suggest that you wash it down with a Bob Marley. We also had the sweet potato pies, $1 each, delicious. I will go back next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
I was in an unfamiliar area and decided toYELP a new place to eat. I'm so glad Wag's popped up! This place is absolutely amazing! It must be family owned because you can taste the love that goes into these meals. $8 "hot plates" like BBQ, baked and fried chicken, red beans and rice, smothered pork chops and more.
google avatar

Deneen H.

Yelp
Larry is always front and center in the midst of his staff. The food is awesome but having the owner present and involved means so much. I highly recomment all of the omelets, the shrimp and grits and the pork chops remind me so much of my grandmothers. This is truly a home-cooked meal prepared with time and love.
google avatar

Cuong T.

Yelp
Food is good. Uber eats works well. But sometimes wait is much long than they say when calling in to order. They tell us 5-10mins. But when we get there it's an additional 20 mins. I don't recommend calling ahead. But if you do just wait 30 mins to come get your food
google avatar

Lakeisha W.

Yelp
I've been going to WAGS since preKatrina. I'm talking before he had credit card machine and I had to walk to the store around the corner for change (looooonnnng time). I still love it and Larry (the owner is awesome). My hubby and I had fish and shrimp Friday and while everything is typically ALWAYS good the mac and cheese Friday was blend. We've started counting our calories and decided not to eat it because we didn't want to waste those calories. But Larry I still ya and we'll keep eating here
google avatar

Larry P.

Yelp
Great little spot off the beaten path. They have daily specials everyday or you can mix and match different items off the menu. Staff is super friendly and the food is hot and fresh. I had the fried fish, stuffed bell peppers and macaroni and cheese.
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
This place and its owners are just as amazing as their food. I ordered a salad with Grilled Shrimp & Chicken and it das delicious. I will be a repeat customer, Thanks Wags!!!

Courtenay L.

Yelp
This is an AMAZING RESTAURANT. The food and the service is AWESOME!!! This business also give back to the community and their customers on a daily basis. That is something even large business don't do. Hats off to the owner who works there as well!!!
google avatar

Dee R.

Yelp
I love this food. They give you such a nice size portion, it's hot, tasty and fast. And it's only $8 for the plate specials. Doesn't get any better than that. Do yourself a favor and go get you some if you're reading this trying to decide what you want to eat. :)
google avatar

Joy T.

Yelp
Came with my family for the first time a few months back. Not a place to sit and dine if you want to have a conversation. Jamaican music BLASTS through their speakers during the day, you can actually hear it before you walk in! It's a great spot for lunch with friends and definitely for football season! Staff is very friendly, funny too! The food is A M A Z I N G L Y good. Food for the soul I tell you. Will be returning for some gumbo, macaroni and friend fish!
google avatar

Sapphire A.

Yelp
The owner of this restaurant is amazing and it's seems like he actually remembers each and everyone of his customers. He greets every one in a super friendly & hospitable manner. I've been going here for years. All of the staff is very friendly. The food is good southern New Orleans food. I honestly don't know anywhere on the westbank I can go for the same thing. It's real food not fast food yet once ordered it comes out fairly quickly. Love this place. They have me as a lifetime customer.
google avatar

Kirk M.

Yelp
Had the opportunity to experience Wags breakfast today. The owner and staff were energetically welcoming and very proud of their establishment. My order was prepared quickly and in a very hearty portion. The shrimp and grits were delicious with the traditional texture if your a grits fan. The flavor was spot on and not over done. When I return to NOLA I will definitely visit WAGS again. Must try if your on the Westbank.
google avatar

Sunny P.

Yelp
Came here with some friends and well it was good but it could have been BEST as I was expecting it or as it was mentioned about but that's okay. It was worth the experience

Yelp
Five fuckin stars. I'm giving 5 's. Ok. We were here for a few days and I'm one to try out the local places cuz thats where the best food is.....usually, about 80% of the time. Two things to keep in mind. Don't let this place fool you. Its off the main street, looks suspicious, maybe on the list for a failed food inspection, but no. Its a local joint. The parking: Not a lot of room to park because of its locations so you might have to hoof it but we were lucky it wasnt too busy. The food: Sooooo good. They seem to have daily specials and on our first visit, I ordered the catfish with red beans and rice. My brother had the fried chicken, also with red beans and rice. And corn bread on both orders. Bruh let me you, this is BY FAR THE best red beans and rice I have EVER had. I took that corn bread and broke it into the red beans and rice and just about inhaled it after the first bite. It was that good. The catfish was good too, they had this sauce that was very similar to Louisiana Hot Sauce but not too tart and not too hot. It was so perfect we asked where to get it. (Walmart). On the second visit (yes we came back) they had smoothered pork chops. . The chops were moist and tender, rice and gravy were finger lickin good. The "mac n cheese" (in quotes because it wasn't the regular elbows I'm used to but still good). And the potatoe salad (it dont look like it but it is, trust me, it is) its just as yummy. So if youre in the area and visiting, ya need to go here. Your appetite will thank you. I'm saying dont let this place fool you
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
We drive from Chalmette all the way to Marrero just to get lasagna on Wednesday's. Just about every visit, Larry has a new drink or great advice and this always makes our trips there worth it!
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
I can't say enough to explain how much I love Wag's -- It's a staple on the West Bank! You walk in and smell the good food. I have never ever had my order wrong or not enjoyed my food. If you are ever in Marrero, La -- you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't stop here!
google avatar

Rotanda Y.

Yelp
During a recent 4 day trip to New Orleans, I ate here for breakfast 3 times. It would have been four but they were closed on Sunday. There is nothing fancy here and if you are living "Green", bring your own plate because everything is served in styrofoam containers. I ordered Liver and grits... twice and shrimp and grits once. I have no complaints about this spot. It is my Go-To staple on the Westbank. I have been for lunch I the past and remember the food beind outstanding but the side portions were a bit small. For the price, you can always order extra. Love this spot and wish them continued success. Till next time Wags... till next time!
google avatar

Ladell V.

Yelp
Omg i loved the food, service and the atmosphere here at wags. I will be back cause i don't cook. Lol
google avatar

Yelp
The food and service here is always incredible! Everyday Wags offers spectacularly delicious lunch specials. They also offer great breakfast options in the morning.
google avatar

Yelp
My oh my.. my favorite spot for shrimps and grits. I just had them 2 mornings ago also this spot is the reason I eat sweet peas lol but seriously great food atmosphere is very cultural heritage which is a plus for me.. the staff is amazing and his down home cooking will put u in a wonderful place more like la la land .

Jen H.

Yelp
We were going to the Westwego Shrimp Lot and on the way back to the city we were looking for some breakfast. This place is so cool. It outer appearance is plain and unmarked, with several "look when you back up" stickers all over the windows, imagining the possible flurry of accidents that caused them to put these stickers up. The inside is so cool, and possibly a night time lounge vibe with daquiris on tap. We ordered a shrimp omelette and grits, for a totally affordable $11. It was phenomenal and just the perfect amount of food. The biscuits were so buttery and moist, with no dryness at all. The grits were $3, and came with sausage, cheese and a biscuit! So good!!!! It was perfect. And the lady at the counter was so nice and offered both of us free coffee. If you're looking for a cheap breakfast/brunch joint with delicious soul and character, come here!
google avatar

Moni G.

Yelp
Ome of the best soul food restaurants in NOLA! No matter what you order ot will taste delicious! I recommend anyone to eat here. There are also healthy food choices that has just as much flavor!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
It's where the locals go. Friendly service there is a variety of food and portion size is good for the price..

Michele W.

Yelp
Amazing food. Big portions!! Really reasonable prices and nice staff! Listen this is a home town soul food. You will never be disappointed!

Realete N.

Yelp
I come here at least 2 times a week food is amazing and the desserts are even better

Yelp
Great gumbo and awesome sweet potato pies. I don't eat gumbo nor sweet potato pies but I make an exception whenever someone is going there for a lunch run
