Tokyo's 6 Decadent Desserts As Seen In Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman

"Opened in 2011, chestnut-focused Waguriya is next on Kantaro’s checklist. Chestnut is the star of Japanese desserts in autumn and the hottest item of the joint is its creamy Montblanc." - Michelin Guide Digital-Singapore

November 2025. I first knew of this fantastic mont blanc from the show ‘Sweet Tooth Salaryman’. There were only locals queuing for this stall, and that’s how you know it’s good stuff. We waited for almost 1 hour, but it’s totally worth it. They specialise in chestnut dessert, and being very creative with the dessert menus. Their mont blanc is without any additional flavour, just pure intense chestnut, and it is not too sweet. The cream and other ingredients are flavourful but not overpowering the main star, mont blanc, at all. In fact, they really enhance the fragrance of chestnut even better. The sets come with hot tea, which match perfectly with the dessert. 10/10 highly recommended!!!

APRIL 2023 On the day of the visit, the store was already serving customers prior to the 11am opening time and there were a few customers ahead. Wait time was quite long as the store was small, about 30 mins wait. Menu was provided while you are waiting so ordering went smoothly when I got a seat. All the desserts comes in a set with your choice of tea. I had the classic Mont Blanc which was very smooth and the natural sweetness of the chestnut flavor comes through nicely. The seasonal strawberry Mont Blanc parfait was also a treat with the mix of sweet strawberry jam sauce and ice cream. A little pricey but it was worth it considering how good the chestnut flavor was and the wait time was not too long.

Finally I got to visit this famous cafe. This provide chestnuts sweets all year around. The main sweet is fancy Mont Blanc. At the same time, they serve seasonal menu, for example, the combination of Mont Blanc and shaved ice in summer season. Especially, in autumn season, the Mont Blanc made of the highest grade chestnut is very popular. So you need to reserve it in very advance. I could get seats because we visited there before noon of weekday. You need to be prepared to wait in line. There were only tables for around four groups.

Really good chestnut cake (Mont Blanc). You’ll probably have to wait outside the store for some time because it’s a popular place, but it’s worth it. For around ¥1,500 you can get a set with cake and tea (or sake). I had a roasted tea (hōjicha) latte with my cake, and both were delicious. Cozy place. Friendly staff. They’re taking the proper measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Great service. We didn’t understand the appeal of this dish but we also don’t really like the red beans desserts. This was a very not tasty experience. We spent more than 3000 yen for two combos. Not clear why people like this place based on the reviews, maybe this is a taste you acquire with time but this was far from being a good desert for our western taste.

A very popular chestnut dessert shop. Visited on a weekday at noon and queued for around 40 mins to get in. I really like the cream, matching mont blanc very well. The service is good and they have English menus.

If you get to Waguriya when it opens, you will be in for a chance to experience their limited Mont Blanc with special chestnut soft cream, of which they only produce 10 per day. All of their products are fresh and delicious, but for me it was worth going early to be able to eat this exquisite sweet. Nevertheless, I want to return to eat the Summer special (melon). There are specials for every season.

Yelp
Tokyo, Yanaka. March 2024. This buzzy dessert shop on Yanaka Ginza has the best chestnut mont blanc I've come across. There are high end Tokyo patissiers who make beautiful kuri mont blanc but the flavor of Waguriya's is hard to beat. When you locate them just sit of one of the three benches to queue. It's very civil. No standing, shuffling your feet, and waiting. The order of the queue is the closest to the entrance is next inside. It's worthwhile checking their Instagram to get an idea of what awaits. There are some very instagrammable variations of their mont blanc and kuri parfaits, but the best is the simple kantaro mont blanc in a set with coffee or tea lattes. The chestnut puree is made from chestnuts from their own farm in Ibaraki. It is piped as uniform swirls of vermicelli - they have this down to a T. Inside is some whipped cream. It sits on a crunchy meringue. That's all the basic one is, but the chestnut flavor is clear and intense. Look for the sidewalk picture board of their mont blanc outside. if you don't want to wait they have a take-away chestnut custard - just open the door on the left and ask. No English menu and very little English spoken so don't expect an explanation of what you see. Just point at the prettiest mont blanc that attracts you and you won't go wrong.

Yelp
If you like mont blanc this is one of the best places to get it in tokyo, and it is different from mont blancs abroad like at angelina because they use fresh japanese chestnuts. the taste is really subtle and light for a dessert, but satisfying. The set comes with a tea to pair, which compliments the dessert really well. They also always have a seaonal flavor (when I went it was strawberries with the mont blanc parfait)!

Yelp
Was visiting Yanaka Ginza and I saw a line for this and saw that it was chestnut, so obviously I had to try it. I waited in line for a good while in the heat before being seated. You order ahead while in line and then get seated inside later (you still have to wait a little for the food once inside). A little pricey, but chestnuts are expensive. The menu in is Japanese, so I based my order off the pictures. I got a chestnut soft serve with various toppings. Honestly, wasn't a huge fan of the mont blanc, but the chestnut soft serve was very good! If there's a next time, I'll skip the line and just get the soft serve (you can order that in another line that is pretty much nonexistent!)

Yelp
For all your chestnut needs... Seriously, you've got cravings for chestnut products - this is where you go to satisfy them. Chestnut soft-serve, chestnut pastries, chestnut daifuku, chestnut pretty much anything - and all excellent. When you add in the excellent coffee, tea, and drinks, well, what more could you possibly ask for?

Yelp
Came here because of rumors that Kantaro came here for Mont Blanc on his show, Kantaro the sweet tooth salaryman. Mont Blanc also really peaked my interest and it did not disappoint! The relaxing ambiance added status to this delicacy. What you can do with chestnuts the Japanese can do very well. I don't care for chestnuts but this dessert gave it a new and sweet flavor to it. Lines do exist so get in line and enjoy this experience! Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
The roasted chestnuts here are humongous about 2 inch diameters. They're moist, sweet and meaty. You gotta try this place if you're in the area and love roasted chestnuts. I've always eaten the small ones and my eyes and tastebuds were opened to a whole new world as soon as I had the first bite of the chestnut from this place. It's a bit expensive 150g for 950 Yen, but it's worth it and they pre-sliced all the chestnuts for you. I docked one star for some of them being partially burnt.

Yelp
Sweet chestnut heaven. Saw this cute shop featured in an episode of Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman on Netflix (please go watch it so we can be friends). One episode is about Mont Blanc (my favorite dessert) so I screeched and declared we needed to go on our next trip to Tokyo. I bookmarked it on my map and forgot about it. By chance we were in the same area of town doing some sightseeing, so of COURSE we made a b-line for the place once we hit all our stops. Everything is chestnut here--if you don't like that rich flavor, then this place probably isn't for you. This is a traditional Japanese take on the classic french dessert, and it is wonderful. They are foreigner friendly but there is no English menu. There were a handful of options to choose from with large photos, so it's pretty easy to point and order. It is a small shop so you'll have to wait on the benches outside, or in the line that forms on the right side of the shop. There is also a takeout counter on the left side of the storefront for chestnut softserve and other chestnut treats. Don't be a dingus like me and walk in to write your name down (there was no line when we arrived)--the staff is attentive and will put you on the list, then come back soon after to take your order while you wait. Opt for the slightly more expensive tea set (ask for "ocha no setto" when you point at your favored choice)--the tea compliments the cool, creamy dessert perfectly. My partner got a seasonal strawberry mont blanc parfait, and I opted for their classic mont blanc parfait. Creamy, rich, but somehow oh-so-light. A delight!

Yelp
The waiter was pretty rude, don't recommend eating here at all. I still remember how rude he was a year later, and finally couldn't keep it in anymore and decided to write this review.
