Wagyu Ryotei Bungo Gion

We booked on recommendation from another traveller. The food was delicious and we have a lovely chef - Kakoa. It was fun awaiting the next dish. Meat was cooked perfectly and servings were very generous. I found the wine list a bit limited and you could only buy by the glass. We really wanted to book a counter seat (we like action!) but this was full - the only onto we has was a private room and this added $55 aud pp on top of the bill. An expensive night but a lovely experience.

We went in with high expectations and were still absolutely blown away. This meal was incredible, and I’ll genuinely be thinking about it for years to come. Our server Reina made the experience unforgettable; she went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. For example, I switched from the raw to the cooked menu last minute and she adapted so quickly, serving the raw and then the cooked portions back to back for me and my partner, and asking if the meat was to our satisfaction. She was so kind, friendly, and made the experience so enjoyable and memorable for us. The food itself was incredible, especially the sukiyaki, chateaubriand, and matcha pudding for dessert. We even tried a regional Kyoto dessert! The ambience was absolutely wonderful as well :-)

This was hands down the best meal we’ve ever had. The whole experience was incredible from the fun of watching the chefs cook right in front of you, to the warm and friendly service. You take your shoes off and sit at a beautiful high-end bar, which makes it feel special and intimate. The wagyu itself was unforgettable. The sirloin cut was out of this world, and even the thinly sliced tongue was amazing so flavorful and tender. The wagyu tail soup was rich and comforting, and we even upgraded to try another version of the tongue sirloin, which was absolutely worth it. By the end we were happily stuffed. The staff made the night even better, incredibly kind, and when we left in the rain they even handed us an umbrella. Since it was our honeymoon, they surprised us with a dessert tray topped with a sweet little plaque that made the evening so memorable. Also little PSA: if you haven’t had plum wine, know that it’s not like a rosé, it’s more like a dessert wine. Super high quality, but just a heads-up for anyone who doesn’t love sweeter drinks. This was a truly unforgettable dining experience in Kyoto, cannot recommend it enough!!

If you want a 5 star beef menu than book at Bungo. A 10 course menu. With good beef meat. Different dishes. Prepared in front of you. A calming atmosphere. But it’s not an exceptional experience in view of the Michelin equivalent price. We had dinner in a private room (even though we didn’t ask for it when we booked they didn’t tell us that it’s additional charge )

I was quite disappointed that Keisha was not working on Sunday. When I made the reservation, I clearly mentioned it was for a special occasion, which is why I booked the private room for our dinner. Upon arrival, we were informed by the staff that Keisha was not working that day. The room was also very cold. Overall, the experience was not very impressive. I wouldn’t spend that much money again for this level of quality and service.

Our dinner here was incredible. From the staff to the food, we were truly awed by the quality of the experience. Each course was crafted with care, and staff were so friendly and did an excellent job of explaining their recommendation on how to consume each dish. A once in a lifetime experience you cannot miss out on!

This meal was not cheap. That said, I believe it was worth it. However you have to be a meat lover. The meat (wagyu) - high quality, as expected for that price. The presentation along with the timing of the serving - as expected and slightly better. Where this resturaunt stands out is it is exemplary of the high level of hospitality I have come to enjoy about Japanese culture. The servers were kind and sweet, and the staff obviously dedicated. Some random things mentioned by other comments that aren't true or at least didn't happen for us at all: no extra service charge (I cannot imagine this happening, surely this must be like a rival store or something botting the review or idk its just unimaginable for the experience we had), and no sweets bribe (unfortunately ahaha) for leaving a good review. Play a game with my girlfriend to guess what level a resturaunt is - she thought this was a michelin star. In my opinion, the taste is not completely outstanding but satisfying, whereas the presentation, and the service make this meal better than expected. Thank you for the lovely experience!

Everything was perfect. All the dishes were beautiful and delicious. All the staffs were kind and spoke English very well. I was very lucky to make a reservation here for fine dining in Kyoto. Definitely going to come again!
